On the way to the National, Confetti wanted to party Texas-style so we detoured to the Big Spring Kennel Club shows in Big Spring, TX. ecently, our Sierra Gold Boston Terrier Club’s health committee chair, Valerie Korff, gave a presentation related to a study on why dogs can and cannot free whelp. The study included Boston Terriers and Scottish Terriers, so the information was particularly interesting to those of us who breed Boston Terriers. This article is summary of the presentation she gave. I hope you find it as informative and eye opening as I did.

A Summary for “Radiographic pelvimetry for the assessment of dystocia in bitches: a clinical study in two terrier breeds(Eneroth et al., 1999)” by Valerie Korff

A significant issue currently facing the Boston Terrier breed is dystocia (abnormal or difficult whelping). Presently, dystocia is typically avoided by performing caesarian sections causing as little stress to the bitch as possible. Still too often C-sections result in loss of one or more puppies and, in severe cases, even death of the dam. Some breeders strive to avoid these downfalls of difficult births by analyzing the history of free whelping and incidence of dystocia in their lines, but this is complicated as many other breeders perform C-sections as a matter of practice, rather than as a treatment only when needed. This make a pattern hard, if not impossible, to identify in a pedigree. Keeping this in mind, a

bitch’s probability of free whelping should be supported by more technical means and, considering the recent advancements in canine health testing, there may be a way to accomplish this goal. In a study involving Boston Terriers and Scottish Terriers, pelvic x-rays of free whelping bitches and bitches affected by obstructive dystocia were compared in addition to an accompanying analysis of dam and puppy conformation, litter size, and puppy weights (Eneroth et al., 1999). Obstructive dystocia, such as caused by narrow birth canals, breach or oversized puppies, fetal death, malformations, or any combination thereof, may be the cause of over 25% of canine

dystocia cases (Darvelid and Linde‐Forsberg, 1994). Taking this into consideration, this study evaluated the usefulness of canine radiographic pelvimetry (the analysis of pelvic measurements from an x-ray to assess potential ease of delivery). Using 20 Boston Terrier and 14 Scottish Terrier bitches, two even groups for each breed based on past free whelping ability or a prior obstructive dystocia experience were created. In the dystocia groups, they looked at bitches that had dystocia due to fetal-pelvic disproportion, which was defined as normal, but unproductive labor without fetal anomalies or breach presentations (Eneroth et al., 1999). All bitches had both a physical and radiographic examination

also evaluated litter data from the normal and abnormal groups (Table 6). Between groups for Boston Terriers, the litter size was the same, but average puppy weight was larger in the group with dystocia than the normal group, where it was 209g (7.4 oz) versus 189g (6.7 oz), respectively. As a result, the puppy weight as a percentage of maternal body weight was significantly larger, with 3.1% vs. 2.5%. In addition, puppy measurements including birth weight and various head and body dimensions were taken from many more animals that were not necessarily included in the x-ray study (Figure 2). Not surprisingly, the Boston Terrier puppies showed a strong relation between puppy weight and head circumference, which is highly significant for bitches that already have a poor vertical pelvic width.

their left side and one on their back. The author notes that they were careful to have the animals perfectly straight to get a symmetric image. From these x-rays, many pelvic distances were measured and later compared between the breeds and groups (Figure 1). The study also found that there is no relation between body mass or height and dystocia in Boston Terriers, while the opposite is true for Scottish Terriers. In addition to the physical and radiographic examination, they

Overall, the study supported that radiographic pelvimetry is a potentially useful way to determine the presence of a narrow pelvis in Boston Terriers (Eneroth et al., 1999). This is exciting because the difference in pelvic dimensions are readily apparent to the untrained eye and the x-ray positions are those used in other common health tests, such as OFA hips, so a breeder may evaluate a bitch’s pelvis when these tests are performed. The one caution the author of the study notes is that the ventrodorsal (on their back) x-ray may give a false vertical diameter based on position and recommends that this measurement instead be taken from the left lateral (on their side) x-ray. This is still viable because the OFA spine test requires two x-rays, conveniently in a lateral and then ventrodorsal recumbency. So, if a pelvis appears narrow on the ventrodorsal view, a breeder can measure the vertical distance on the lateral view (or have their veterinarian do it, if they are not sure) to confirm. Even more exciting, a separate

study found that the pelvic shapes of the sire and dam could explain 26% of the pelvic shapes of the offspring, meaning that breeders can slowly move towards an animal that is far less likely to experience obstructive dystocia (Linde-Forsberg, 2003). With this knowledge, breeders can not only assess the potential free whelping ability of a bitch, but, because it is heritable, can also actively select and improve upon this trait within their line. By taking advantage of this technology, the Boston Terrier as a breed, can move towards a healthier and more natural whelping experience - something it desperately needs.

February 11, 2001 - June 27, 2012 Ruthie is the one who started it all for me in Bostons. After 11.5 years of constant companionship, my sweet Ruthie (named after my mom, Ruth, as they have the same birthday) left me to go play with her Great Dane brother, Jag, on the other side of the rainbow bridge. Ruthie is the precious dog who made me fall in love with the Boston Terrier breed after being committed to Great Danes for over 20 years. Her smile (and YES, she absolutely did smile) brought me joy, laughter, and smiles even in my hard times. She was the alpha dog in our family, but never a diva or princess. Instead she was the queen, but always with grace and in the most loving, classy, and lady-like manner. She taught the puppies how to be “good dogs” and taught us humans patience, love, and tenderness for many years... though not long enough as I know I could have learned much more from her. I’ve lost a dear friend, faithful companion, and loving family member. es, there actually IS a Boston Terrier Museum and I had the wonderful experience of visiting it in May on my way to the Boston Terrier Club of America’s National Specialty this year. Honestly, it was heaven - talk about Boston memorabilia overload!!! I was like a little kid in a candy shop. It was truly amazing! The photos included with this issue’s article are a mere handful of the photos I took. I believe I took well over 100 photos, so you can imagine the truly magnificent collection at the museum. Let me first give you a little background and history of who established the museum. The

developer, owner, and curator of this fine museum is Bob Hambright and he LOVES Boston Terriers. He’s had five so far - all males and only one at a time so he wouldn’t’ have to share attention among multiple dogs. He wanted each one to know his full love. He has five little dog houses in the museum - each with one of the names of his Bostons. Bob wasn’t a collector until about 10 years ago believe it or not. He started collecting after his wife bought him a large Sandicraft Boston Terrier figurine and before you know it, he was searching online (eBay and other sites), going to estate sales, scanning newspapers,

and watching for anything Boston Terrier-related that he’d like to add to his collection. He became acquainted with other collectors such as Paul Hiller and they would often share their recent acquisitions with one another. Bob became pretty well known for his BT collection addiction and other Boston Terrier lovers from all around further enabled that addiction by donating various items to him. Bob’s collection soon outgrew his home, so about five years ago, after his wife passed away, he decided to purchase a building (an old, OLD hospital that later became a pharmacy), remodel it, and convert it into a

Boston Terrier Museum so that Boston Terrier lovers could visit and share in his appreciation of the many collectibles he had acquired. His museum has literally hundreds of Boston Terrier children’s toys and books, statues, vintage candy dishes, magazines, door stops, cards, canes/walking sticks, ornaments, clocks, jewelry, decanters, slippers, molds, clothing with Boston printed material, and a lot more. If you can think of something “Boston”, chances are Bob has at least one of them. Many of the items are quite rare and some are truly one of a kind. Some of the items he’s acquired were damaged or in poor

repair, but for those items Bob spent hours meticulously restoring them to their original condition. It was truly amazing to see how he’s used his love of Bostons to build and continually grow the museum. Wandering through the museum, chatting with Bob, learning about the history and origin of many of the collectibles was truly fascinating. The love, attention to detail, and care Bob gives to his collection and the museum itself is really quite amazing. Listening to various stories about how he came to get certain pieces (like the HUGE Boston Terrier bank you can often see him standing

beside that’s nearly as big as he is …. He drove cross country to pick up the bank only to find that it was TOO BIG TO FIT IN THE CAR!!!! Hahaha… He worked it out though as he HAD to have it!!!) and the people he met through his collection activities, including many of the dog show world. Sadly, Bob closed the museum on May 15, 2012, so I was indeed fortunate to be able to see it. Now, that being said, even though the museum is “closed to the public”, if a BT lover happens to be in the area and would like to see this fabulous collection, you can give Bob a call and he will

gladly open it up and give you a private tour. In fact, that’s exactly what he did for me. I was at a dog show and while I had intended for it to be a “show and go” time for me, my girl ended up getting Best Bred By Exhibitor, so of course we had to stay for BBE Groups and boy am I glad we did as we ended up with a Group 1 (over a lovely miniature poodle, adorable French bulldog, and lively Schipperke) and got to participate in BBE BIS. We didn’t get the “Best”, but we had a great time! Anyway, I digress… where I was going with that was to say Bob was very accommodating as I had called him the day before to ask if I could come to the

museum the next day after I showed and thought it would be around 3pm as it was about a 2.5 hour drive from the show; however, when I called to tell him that I was running very late due to the win, he was quite understanding and even though I didn’t get there until after 6pm, he still opened the museum to me and spent close to 2 hours with me. What a GREAT experience it was for me too! So, next time you’re in (or near) Floydata, Texas, give Bob a call (a day or two before hand so he’ll have a heads up), stop by The Boston Terrier Museum, and walk into a BT lover’s dream land and enjoy the

sights and stories you would not other wise have the opportunity to enjoy. Bob - THANK YOU for sharing this wonderful piece of your life! I do have one question… how do you manage to keep everything so clean AND dust free????  Seriously, if you ever have the opportunity to stop by and see the museum and visit with Bob, he’s listed, so just look him up, give him a call and maybe, just maybe you’ll get that “kid in a candy shop” feeling too!

General Appearance The Boston Terrier is a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well balanced dog, brindle, seal or black in color and evenly marked with white. The head is in proportion to the size of the dog and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence.

The body is rather short and well knit, the limbs strong and neatly turned, the tail is short and no feature is so prominent that the dog appears badly proportioned. The dog conveys an impression of determination, strength and activity, with style of a high order; carriage easy and graceful. A proportionate combination of “Color and White Markings” is a particularly distinctive feature of a representative specimen. “Balance, Expression, Color and White Markings” should be given particular consideration in determining the relative value of GENERAL APPEARANCE to other points.

Size, Proportion, Substance

Weight is divided by classes as follows: Under 15 pounds; 15 pounds and under 20 pounds; 20 pounds and not to exceed 25 pounds. The length of leg must balance with the length of body to give the Boston Terrier its striking square appearance. The Boston Terrier is a sturdy dog and must not appear to be either spindly or coarse. The bone and muscle must be in proportion as well as an enhancement to the dog’s weight and structure. Fault: Blocky or chunky in appearance. Influence of Sex. In a comparison of specimens of each sex, the only evident difference is a slight refinement in the bitch’s conformation.

Head

The skull is square, flat on top, free from wrinkles, cheeks flat, brow abrupt and the stop well defined. The ideal Boston Terrier expression is alert and kind, indicating a high degree of intelligence. This is a most important characteristic of the breed. The eyes are wide apart, large and round and dark in color. The eyes are set square in the skull and the outside

corners are on a line with the cheeks as viewed from the front. Disqualify: Eyes blue in color or any trace of blue. The ears are small, carried erect, either natural or cropped to conform to the shape of the head and situated as near to the corners of the skull as possible. The muzzle is short, square, wide and deep and in proportion to the skull. It is free from wrinkles, shorter in length than in width or depth; not exceeding in length approximately one-third of the length of the skull. The muzzle from stop to end of the nose is parallel to the top of the skull. The nose is black and wide, with a well defined line between the nostrils. Disqualify: Dudley nose. The jaw is broad and square with short regular teeth. The bite is even or sufficiently undershot to square the muzzle. The chops are of good depth, but not pendulous, completely covering the teeth when the mouth is closed. Serious Fault: Wry mouth. Head Faults: Eyes showing too much white or haw. Pinched or wide nostrils. Size of ears out of proportion to the size of the head. Serious Head Faults: Any showing of the tongue or teeth when the mouth is closed.

Neck, Topline and Body

The length of neck must display an image

of balance to the total dog. It is slightly arched, carrying the head gracefully and setting neatly into the shoulders. The back is just short enough to square the body. The topline is level and the rump curves slightly to the set-on of the tail. The chest is deep with good width, ribs well sprung and carried well back to the loins. The body should appear short. The tail is set on low, short, fine and tapering, straight or screw and must not be carried above the horizontal. (Note: The preferred tail does not exceed in length more than one-quarter the distance from set-on to hock.) Disqualify: Docked tail. Body Faults: Gaily carried tail. We invite one and all to the Alberta Kennel Club’s All Breed Summer Classic August 2 – 5, 2013 at the world famous Spruce Meadows Equestrian Center in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Under Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) rules, dogs not registered with the CKC, wishing to participate in CKC sanctioned events must have a CKC Event Registration Number (ERN). Application forms can be found at the CKC website www.ckc.ca CKC Forms on Line/Registration/Other Show & Trials Forms/Application for Event Registration Number and must be obtained within 30 days of an event to avoid cancellation of points. Completed forms may be faxed to the CKC at (416) 675 6506. The show committee has made arrangements with the Shawnessy Super 8 in Calgary for a block of 25 discounted rooms during the AKC Show and the BTCC Specialties from Aug 2 to 5, 2013. To reserve at the discounted rate, please contact the hotel directly at 403-254-8878 and mention the “Boston Terrier Club of Canada”. The discounted room rate is $119 CAD (regular rate is $169 CAD) and must be booked and guaranteed by June 15th, 2013. Rooms booked after that date will be at the regular rate.

A celebration steak barbeque will be held the evening of Sunday Aug 3, 2013 at MacKendrick Kennels on Hi-way 22X, minutes from the show site. Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for non-members
