Statment of Intent My chosen theme is relationships because i want to look more into to relationship between two opposites. This is the juxtaposition between different objects, people or even landscapes/environments. I also thought that i could look at linking some of these together for example people and the environment or objects and landscapes. This could show of some complex skills which could push my ideas to the next level. Also on the topic of oppersites i want to look at peoples thoughts and feelings related to what they look like and the types of clothing that they wear. I intend to look at a variety of different photographers or artists to help me to understand more about the theme relationships and how they present the idea of it. This will give me ideas about the types of interesting shots there are and the types of background information and hidden messages the photographs covey. It will also give me ideas of how i could incorporate different technique into my work and different edits to make my photographs interesting and original. I intend to complete photoshoots which follow the theme i have chosen to look at relationships. I will then look further into the theme to take photographs which include juxtaposition which is a more complex idea. I intend to look at the juxtaposition between two objects for example a shiny penny and a rusty old penny. I then want to explore some more complex ideas such as the juxtaposition between an object and an environment/landscape or an object and a person. I intend to research Hans-Cristian Schink because he looked at the relationship between a natural environment and a structure or building that has ruined/destroyed the beauty of the natural environment. This is because it shows the opposites between the two different main features in the photographs but it a complex idea which must of had lots of thought. I will also look at Joel Sternfeld because he has looked at a similar situation with a city and the natural environment and the relationship because the two. I will also look at the photographer Jim Goldberg. This is because he took a series of photographs looking at ‘rich and poor’ people in America. Rich and poor are opposites and and show the relationship between two types of people. I would also like to look at the work of Gillian Wearing. This is because her work shows the relationship between a person and the thought or feeling that they show on a piece of paper that they are holding up. You are then able to look at the difference between the person and whats written on the piece of paper. I will look at using different techniques with the camera and use the different settings to produce some high quality photographs. These are settings such as aperture, shutter spead, manual and auto. This will help me when taking photographs at different angles and times of the day and also motion photographs. I would also like to use the technique of scanography. This is because it is an interesting technique which i haven’t used before. Also i could use it to interpret some of Jim Goldberg’s work because we used hand writing on his work. I would then scan the writing onto the computer and use photoshop to edit it onto the photograph. In photoshop i would like to use a number of techniques such as blur, harrison shutter effect, cropping, rotation and repetition. These techniques could make my photographs look more original and unique. I will hope to learn more about the theme of relationships and that it doesn’t always have to be a relationship between people. I will also hope to learn different editing skills and techniques which will help me produce some high quality photographs. These techniques include blur, harrison shutter effect, cropping, rotation and repetition. I would also hope to learn more about scanography and the background information about it. I would like to see my final format including photographs to do with my theme of juxtaposition including objects, people and thier thoughts and feelings. I would like to relate this to the person looking at the piece in a subtle and unique way. I would also like to use a number of techniques such as editing on photoshop including blur, harrison shutter effect, cropping, rotation and repetition. I would also like to see some manual edits as this shows more of a hands on side of my final outcome. This are edits such as cutting, sticking, layering, sticthing and scoring. These are all techniques which are interesting to look at and are effective is used appropriately.

Joel Sternfeld has looked at the relationship between nature and a city area. He has also looked at the way an area is destroyed by large structures or buildings.

Elinor Carucci has looked at the relationship between people using their facial expressions and body language.

David Spero’s photographs are too do with the relationship between objects and there environment. You can see here that he has used different coloured balls in different environments.

Hans-Christian Schink grew up as a son of an art teacher and a university teacher of Art and Art History. During the exercise of “unpopular profession” he decided to make the photographic hobby into a career. He studied from 1986 to 1991 in photography at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts at Joachim Jansong . From 1991 to 1993 he was a student at the university. In the following years he got more work scholarships, including in 1997 by the Foundation Cultural Fund for the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf and 2008 from the Else Heiliger Fund of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation . In 2002, he was “artist in residence” at Künstlerhaus Villa Aurora , Los Angeles. He has received several awards; in 2004 the German Photo Book Award in the category photo illustrated books for his book “Transportation Projects” and 2008 worth 50,000 euro international REAL Photography Award. Hans-Christian Schink systematically working on photo series or groups of works with a wide range of photographic subjects and content additions. Nor parallel to study in Leipzig he developed in 1993 photographic series “From Leipzig by Günther village”. In the style of documentary photography, he shows buildings and streets such as landscape cutouts along the road from the outskirts of Leipzig Merseburger to a shopping center outside. This series is reminiscent of Ed Ruscha’s famous work “Every building on the Sunset Strip” of 1966 , however, is the place of completeness a concentrated photographic views of cutouts and typical. At the same time makes the photo series on the increasing changes in the (urban) landscape in eastern Germany after reunification attention. In 1997 he made the series “Flämig” that shows an East German landscape in which the change occurs is delayed, not just individual houses have been renovated and much reminiscent of the GDR era. Hans-Christian Schink is known for his series of photo on the gigantic work of road and rail infrastructure in which Germany was launched after reunification. Peenebrücke Jarmen. 2002 (Bridge over river) This photograph shows a bridge, which has been built over a river. This is like a natural environment has been destroyed by a man made feature. I think

that this photograph is dull looking because thearea that has been destroyed and build over. This bridge is a dull grey colour, which has been put in aphotograph has been taken looking up the show place which used to be a light and bright airy place.how big the bridge is and shows the impact it gives. The trees in the background are all dead and fallingI have chosen this photograph because it shows apart showing the nature area has been ruined.how something looking so perfect can be destroyed This photograph conveys emotions of passionby something looking so imperfect. because the area has been destroyed for human use. Although this is a good thing for humans it has destroyed the environment. This photograph explores the idea of nature and how it is not being looked after and is destroyed by large features that aren’t pleasing to look at. This photograph has been taken at an angle where you are able to see clearly the environment in the background and the large structure that has been built on it. This photograph has got good natural lighting so that the photograph is of a high quality. This photograph wasn’t taken on a sunny day but that is to compliment the mood and atmosphere of the photograph. The large structured bridge spreads across the foreground right back to the background. This shows how large the bridge is and the area of damage and disruption it has caused. The nature environment is mainly in the background of this photograph. This could be because it is showing how non-important it is. The focus is sharp in the foreground but the background is slightly blurred. This could be because again the nature is in the background and it is being portrayed as nonimportant. There is only a small range of colours that are either dull, not interesting or contrasting bright colours. There are only small patches of green where the nature area is still alive. Most of the photograph is filled which the bridge to show that it is the most important. The rest of the photograph is filled with the nature area that has been destroyed and build over. This photograph has been taken looking up to show how big the bridge is and shows the impact it gives. I have chosen this photograph because it shows how something looking so perfect can be destroyed by something looking so imperfect. This shows the relationship between the two. The rest of the photograph is filled with the nature

Bridge/structure over countryside This photograph shows that a large strusture has been placfes in an area which has now been destroyed. This photograph has a very dull mood because the counrty side has been destroyed and ruined by a sturcture. This photograph coveys emotions of anger because it disrupts the peacefulness of the environment and the beauty of the landscape. This phtograph explores thoughts of nature and beauty because parts of the area have been destroyed for human use.

frame because it is believed as less important part of the photograph. Parts are included because this shows that you can see it is destroyed and the large structure is over the top of it. The focus is sharp on the struture/bridge because it is the main part of the photograph. This country side area in the background is slightly blurred to show that it is not important and has been treated badly. The structure is a very light and bright colour which makes it stand out and contrast with the background. The background is made up of very dack and dull colours. Quite alot of the frame is filled with the object and the rest is empty. The empty fill of the photograph shows how the countryside area has been destroyed and abandoned. This photograph has been taken from a high angle so that you can look across at the structure but down on the countryside environjment. This is it back up the idea and thought of power and importance. I like this photograph because from looking at it once or twice you arent able to see the hidden messages that i have explored but when you look further into the photograph you are able to see the relation between the structure and the courntyside. I like that they have made it look like the bridge is the focus point of this photograph and then you are able to see that it is placed onto the natural environment. I like the angle that this photographer has used because it is interesting and looks down on the counrtyside making it look less important to relate to the hidden message.

This photograph has been styled in a way that it is showing the large sturcture as the main part I would say that they are oppersites. of the photograph. This shows that it is the most important part of this photograph and it doesnt matter atall about the counrtyside/nature area in the background. The lighting is beaming on the large structure making it look bright and eyecatching. It emphasises the structure backing up the point that it is the most important part of the photograph. The structure is stretched across the foreground and the background. The counrtyside area is also in the foreground and background but you are able to mostly see it in the background making it look like it isnt an important part of the photograph. A large part of the countryside has been excluded from the

Walking-the-High-Line

Joel Sternfeld

Joel Sternfeld was born in 1944 and is a fine-art colour photographer. He is noted for his largeformat documentary pictures of the United States and helping establish colour photography as a respected artistic medium. Sternfeld has a number of pieces of work in the permanent collections of the MOMA in New York City and the Getty Centre in Los Angeles. He has influenced a generation of colour photographers, including Andreas Gursky, who borrows many of Sternfeld’s techniques and approaches. Joel Sternfeld has exposed a strip of land running through the heart of one of the world’s densest cities which has somehow escaped the clutches of the real-estate developers for the last 25 years. Raised 30 feet in the air, cutting through converted factories and dividing city blocks, the “High Line” runs from Manhattan’s West Village up to 34th Street. It was built in the 1930s to accommodate the traffic from ships docking at the piers on the Hudson River. The line saw its last train in 1980 and has since languished in a state of sublime oblivion. Sternfeld was part of a group of local residents who formed an advocacy group called Friends of the High Line who campaigned for the preservation and re-use of the line. They succeeded and work has now started on creating an innovative public space of urban parkland designed by Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Sternfeld earned a BA from Dartmouth College and teaches photography at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. He began taking colour photographs in 1970 after learning the colour theory of Johannes Itten and Josef Albers. Colour is an important element of his photographs. American Prospects is Sternfeld’s most known book and explores the irony of human-altered landscapes in the United States. To make the book, Sternfeld photographed ordinary things, including unsuccessful towns and barrenlooking landscapes.

are not any bright colours in it. This photograph explores the ideas of nature. This is because this piece of nature/green land was covered up and destroyed by a railway track and after a period of time it has grown its way up again. An area of perfect land has been destroyed by something imperfect. The lighting on this photograph is making the nature area stand out. This is because it is emphasising the fact it grown back up and shouldn’t have been destroyed in the first place. You are able to see the city in the background which shows that this photograph was taken in a rural place. In the foreground you are able to see the nature which has grown up and the tracks which look old. This photograph has been stylised so that you are able to see the nature and environment growing over the tracks of the railway. This shows that it has been destroyed but making its way back to life. You are able to see the city faintly in the background of this photograph which shows that it has been built over the natural environment which was there at the beginning. The lighting of this photograph is mainly focusing on the natural and emphasising these areas. This is because it is showing it has almost come back to life. The lighting is not focused on the city buildings as there is a slight mist. A large part of the nature/plants has been included in this photograph and not so much of the city. There isn’t a large range of colours used in this photograph. The lighter colours are in the foreground in the nature area of this photograph this is because this is the main focus. The colour engages you to look closely into the photograph and look at the detail it included. The angle of this photograph is very centred and looking across the nature area.

I have chosen this photograph because it shows that nature environments are being destroyed by big structures or bricked buildings. It shows that beautiful landscapes and environmental areas are getting damaged and not treated very well. I like this photograph because the photographer has used an angle which shows the nature area is more important then the city. I also like that you are able Walking the High Line(photograph with rail tracks) to see that there was once a railway track which This photograph is taken of an odd railway in a destroyed the nature area. Now is abandoned the city with nature and plants growing over it. This plants are able to grow again. photograph has a rather dull atmosphere as there

Walking the High Line (photograph including buildings) This photograph shows that a path or road was once build over the nature area and destroyed the beauty of the environment. The road was then ripped up and collapsed through and natural environment is now able to regrow. This photograph coveys a hidden message as you can see that the buildings are imperfect and don’t look the nicest of buildings. Then the natural plants and trees, although they have been destroyed, are brightly coloured and healthy. I would say that there is a rather happy and light mood because most of the photograph uses colours which are light. This isn’t the whole photograph but the main focus backs that up. I think that there are emotions of joy because the natural environment is aloud to live again. This photograph definitely explores the ideas of nature. This is because there are plants and trees included in the photograph. The photographer has used natural lighting to produce this photograph. This is because it is taken outside so that they are able to get a high quality photograph. This focus is very sharp on this photgraph. No parts of the photograph is blurred because the whole piece is important to understand. The nature area is mainly in the foreground of this photograph. This is because I feel it is the most important part of the photograph. The buildings are in the background of the photograph. This is because they were once an important aspect to the city/town but now they are run-down the nature is the most important/in power. Although the

buildings are in the background of this photograph, you are still able to see that the road or path has collapsed in some way. A lot of the nature area has been included in the frame of this photograph but not much of the buildings have been used. This is because the nature is making a come back and starting to grow and live again. The colours in this photograph are very limited. The plants and trees are a light green colour which stands out in front of the buildings. The buildings in the background are a brown colour which is old looking. The buildings has lines which point towards the middle of the photograph. This then focuses on the nature area and makes your eye look at that the most. This photgraph is very jam packed and doesn’t look empty. There is only a small section of this photograph which is sky but the rest is filled with either the buildings or the natural environment. The use of the green coloured plants exaggerates the fact that although it has been destroyed it is coming back and living again. I have chosen this photograph because it shows how nature has been destroyed by large buildings. I like this photograph because if you look closely at the detail you can actually see that the nature was covered up and destroyed by a path or road. It shows the beauty and perfectness of the nature environment then the not so nice looking and imperfectness of the buildings. I also like this photograph because of the contrast of colours that are used. The green contrasted with the brown coloured buildings in the background making the nature area stand out.

Steven Pippins

Laundromat-Locomotion (Walking in Suit)

Steven Pippins is an English photographer and sculptor. After completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he took a Foundation course in art at Loughborough College (1981–1982) and then studied sculpture at Brighton Polytechnic (1982– 1995) and the Chelsea School of Art, London (1987). He worked in Berlin on a DAAD scholarship in 1997–1998, and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1999. Pippin typically uses objects such as bath tubs, wardrobes and washing machines converted so that they function as cameras. The equipment itself, the process (often filmed) of converting the objects and their methods of operation are as important as the results; the makeshift cameras and the photographic images produced by them are often displayed together. An essential aspect of these works is that the photographic subject is related to the reconfigured object; for Beach Bath (1983) Pippin converted a bath tub into a pin-hole camera, using it to photograph semi-naked figures on the Brighton sea front. In 1985 Pippin began experimenting with washing machines, leading in 1991 to his first series of Laundromat Pictures. The project culminated in Laundromat–Locomotion (Horse & Rider) (1997; New York, Twelve black-andwhite photographs, produced by Gavin Brown’s Enterprise), a row of twelve washing machines ingeniously converted into cameras operated by a trip wire. The resulting images of a horse being ridden through the laundromat paid homage to the pioneering experimental photography of Eadweard Muybridge. From 1991 Pippin also constructed a variety of sculptural machines that incorporated sound, vision and movement. An article in The Guardian explains that Pippin first looked for a suitable laundrette in San Francisco: He discovered that most of the establishments big enough for what he had in mind were run by the Mafia, who used them to (literally) launder money, and they were not interested in this persistent, soft-spoken Englishman bringing them publicity. Eventually, though, after two years of looking, he got permission to use a 4,000sq ft laundromat, as long as he did not get in the way of the customers.

I think that Steven Pippins photographs fit in with my theme relationships because we have made his own lense to make his photographs look more interesting and unique. I am looking at imperfect and perfect aspects in photographs and I think that this photograph backs that statement up. This is because the len or edit made in front of the photograph is imperfect and that covers the fact that the photograph is perfect. This photograph is very old looking so I think the mood of this photograph is very much dull and not very exciting. I do think though that the circular frames make the photograph look more individual and unique. I think that these photographs portray emotions/feelings of uncertainty. This is because the person in the photographs is hidden and you cant quite see the detail of what the person looks like. The colours of this photograph gives a very bid impact on this photograph. The photograph is in black and white. This helps us to understand that the photograph was taken a long time ago or edited in a way that it looks like that. The black and white effect also makes the photograph look more different and unique from other photographs. The colour of the black frame compliments the photograph because that also includes shade of black. The lense has been set up to style this photograph. The photograph would have been taken using natural light so that the photograph was to a high standard and quality. You aren’t able to see this clearly because the lense that has been placed over the top of the photograph. The person in the photograph is in the background. You can just about see the figure of the person in the background. The foreground of this photograph is the cracked effect lense that has been used. The lense that has been used is in sharp focus and you are able to see clearly the cracks that have been created to create an effect. The actual photograph underneath the lense is not in focus and slightly blurred. Not all of the photograph is included in this piece because the circular frame cuts out some of the photograph. This means you are only able to make out the person that is walking and the background/behind the person. The middle part of this photograph is filled with the person although you are not able to see him clearly. The rest of the photograph is filled with

the background which is the washing machines. The dramatic circular shape frame makes you limited to only seeing a part of the photograph. This makes you wonder is there are certain parts hidden that you are not able to view/see. I have chosen this photograph because it relates to the theme relationships. It also relates to what I have focused on which is perfect and imperfect and the imperfect frame is layered over a perfect photograph. I like this photograph because you are not able to see that photograph properly or in full focus. I like that you are limited to only the circular frame because it makes you think that there is more to the photograph then just what you are able to see.

Jim Goldberg

a thread that runs through all the work that is to do with bearing witness,” he told me in 2009. “The photographs are about asking questions, though, not answering them. I’m not a politically radical person. In fact, I’m much more interested in being radical aesthetically.” By giving his subjects a space to share their thoughts about their situation, Goldberg avoids many of the nagging questions straight photojournalism prompts: is the subject being exoticised or romanticised? Is the viewer desensitised by constant images of suffering? In Open See, many of the asylum seekers and illegal emigrants Goldberg photographed wrote short, heartbreaking paragraphs about their personal sense of displacement and longing for home.

Jim Goldberg describes himself as “a documentary storyteller”. Often, the stories he tells are epic in scope: he spent 10 years among homeless young people in his native San Francisco for his series, Raised by Wolves. And his project Open See, which tells the stories of refugees, migrants and trafficked groups trying to find new homes in Europe (which he started in 2003 and won him the 2007 CartierBresson award and the Deutsche Borse prize) still marches on. Recently, Goldberg has been digitising his huge analog archive, a process that has prompted him to re-edit his older series with the benefit of hindsight. A reworked version of Raised By Wolves, now an expensive collector’s item, is promised, but the first fruit of this process is a new version of Rich and Poor (1977-85), which has been out of print since 1985. Rich and Poor looks at the social divide in 1970s and 80s America in Goldberg’s now characteristic style – black-and-white portraits accompanied by handwritten texts from the subjects. The use of ephemera is central to his way of working. “There’s

In Rich and Poor, that sense of exile is no less acute among those struggling to survive, but theirs is an economic disenfranchisement expressed in the most poignantly personal terms. “When I look at this picture, I feel alone,” writes one man of his family portrait. “My mum looks pretty I look scared,” writes a young boy. There is such pain and sadness in his portraits of the American poor, not just of those who have been physically scarred by life, but of those fatigued by the daily struggle to get by. Initially, Goldberg’s approach moves between the formal portrait and the glimpsed snapshot, but becomes altogether more formal – and the pain less evident – when he ENTERS the other country that is rich America. Here, the concerns of the sitters tend towards the individualistic. “We are a contemporary family,” writes one man, sitting on the edge of a bed with his wife and child in a minimalist bedroom. “We don’t want to be part of the masses. We want to live with style.” A few pages later, another man in an opulent living room with his wife writes: “I am trapped in this very consuming game where I can’t have anything that is average.” Between the two, one senses, lie all the myriad discontents of affluent America.

Photographers Interpretations

Here i have taken two photographs of a man dressed in a suit outside of a abandoned house. I have interpreted Jim Goldberg photographs as he has dont a series of photographers using the ides of rich and poor. I wanted to show a rich man sadly lost everything in a click of a fignger. I like the photograph to the left because it shows how damaged this property is and how run down it is. Then the man standing outside of it is looking proud, confident and well off with the clothes that he is wearing. I have made the background look vintage and old to relate to the fact that the property is derelict and old. I have then enhanced the man standing in front to make him stand out and contract. This then helps to show the relationship between the man and the background and shows a bit about what his life used to be. I like the way that i have edited this photograph because the square blocks stand out on the black suit and make you realise they are parts of the abandoned house. It also shows that he is slowly turning into something completely oppersite to what his life used to be like. I have used a eye level shoot so that you are able to see the detail in both the man in the foreground and the abandoned house in the background. I have left out some of the house in the background because i wanted to focus on seeing the whole of the man and a part of the run down house. The photograph to the right shows a number of broken windows and the man looking into them. This shows that the house is really destroyed and damaged yet the man is still standing proud and confident. I like that i have edited this photograph using black and white because although it is narrowed down the colours, the man still stands out. This is because the posh, up market jacket that the man is wearing is a deep black so it makes the man contrast with the lighter blacks, greys and whites. I also like the way that the lighting of this photograph has made the inside of the windows stand out. This then contrasts with the lighter broken parts of the window and makes them stand out.

Here i have taken and edited two phototgraphs whilst looking at the photographer Jim Goldbery. This is becaise he took a series of photographs looking at poor and rich people. The photography to the left shows that i have looked at a rich man who has lost everthing to buisness problems. I have used a slightly higher angle to show the rubbish and dirt that is in the mans house. Also you are able to see the mans facial expression and how he is trying to put on a brave face but is actually destroyed inside. The photograph to the right shows all the rubbish outside of the house and the building which is falling apart. I have used an old style edit to show the property as beng destroyed. In this photograph you are able to see a clear difference of rich and poor between the environment and the person because of the clothes the man is wearing and the state that the environment is. This helps to compliment the ides of opposites and the relationship between them. The photograph to the right shows more in the frame of the photograph. This is so that you are able to fully see what the environment in the background is like and how the man relates to it. I used a man in a suit because it shows an opposite to the background of the photograph. A man in a suit would not usual be seen in a derelict area. The man stands out as he is wearing black and white and it contracts with the vintage coloured background. This helps to show the clear division and opposites between the environment and the person. Although the man is only in a small section of the photograph he still stands out in front of the background.

Here i have taken a photograpg of a man standing infront of a derilict property. I have looked at the photographJim Goldberg. This is because he has created a series of photographers looking at poor and rich people. my interpretationshs show that i have created a scene which shows a rich man that is turning into a poor man because of buisness reasons. I like the way that you are only able to see the middle part of this photograph. This is because without needing to see the whole scene, you can tell that the man is an upper class citerzen with the clothes he is wearing. You can also tell be the way he is standing, he is not slouching and it standing tall. The background looks very run down and the oppersite to the man in the foreground. i have edited this photograph in a way in which the background is a vintage and old looking style. I have used spherize to make some of the background larger so you are able to see the detail of the rubbisha and trash. I have then enhanced the mans suit so that it contrasted with the background and it stands out backing up the idea of the man being upper class. I like the way that i have flipped and decreased the opacity on one of the suits photographs because you can see through to the rubbish and trash area.

Here i have interpreted the work of Jim Goldberg. This is because i have photographed a man who looks upper class but the background of this photograph shows his true story. This is of how his house has been destroyed, he is on his own so lost all his family and living in nothing but a state. i wanted to show the man in the foreground and the whole of the mess that he is in. This shows the amount of mess and disrubtion he is actually in. I like the dramatic angle that i have used in the photograph below because you can see up close the mess that has been caused. then in the background you are able to see the run down caravan then the man standing in the suit. This creates the oppersites between the rich and the poor.

The photograph above shows the opposite between a person and an environment. You can see this because he is an upper class looking man in a suit would not be located in a run down area. I like that I have slightly blurred to background of this photograph because it makes you focus on the man in this photograph. This compliments the idea of the photograph that he is rich whereas as the area is poor and not as important as he is. I like that although he is only a little part of this photograph he is still a focus part and main feature of the photograph. I like that there is a clear opposite because the set area is very run down and derelict. This is a more hidden message to this photograph, which relates to the photographer Jim Goldberg. This is that the man used to be a wealthy man but sadly lost everything and is now a poor man with limited items. Jim Goldberg looked at poor people because rehomed or actually getting a room to stay in and I have interpreted the opposite of this. This is because I wanted to use a unique and interesting environment to show the persons emotions in the photography.

Here i have taken photographs which relate to the photographer Han-Christian Schink. His work includes structures in alien environments so i have used a person dressed in a certain way in an unusual environment. These photographers also relate to the photographer Jim Goldberg because he produced a project looking at rich and poor. The photograph to the left is taken an a higher angle to show all the dirt and trash which is surrounding the man model. I have chosen this location because a upper class looking man wouldn’t be associated with a rundown area. This shows opposites. I like this photograph to the left because i have used both black and white and standard colours to produce a good edit. I like that the caravan and pieces of trash or rubbish are coloured as they stand out and contrast with the black and white. This highlights actually how derelict the area is. I have styled the model so that he looks very out of place. This shows in the types of clothing he is wearing and the way he is standing. His facial expressions makes him look uncomfortable as he is not used to the area he is in. I like that there is trash in the foreground of this photograph right through to the background because it shows how much of a rundown place this is. The photograph below is also edited with parts black and white and parts in colour. I have done this randomly to show how inconsistent and usually the location is. I like that i have made it have a slight vintage feel. This conveys how old and damaged the land is. This is then opposite to the model i have used. I like the way that i have over layed some of the run down areas of the photograph over the model because it is trying to show that the photograph fits well together but actually the man contrasts with the location. When taking the photograph i positioned myself so that the caravans shadow was over the model to make him look part of the derelict area. Although this does make him blend in the photograph more because of the black you are still able to see that he is in an alien environment. The lighting i have used on both photographs is natural lighting. I have produced some high quality photographs because the sun was out so the quality increased.

Techniques Using Photoshop Blur Effect

Here i have created a photograph edit using Photoshop. I first duplicated the photograph and took away the background so that all was left was the man in the photograph. I then blurred the photograph and placed it in the area i thought looked best. I like this edit because the actually edit itself is very subtle. I like that i took away the background otherwise the whole background would be blurred too and the photograph wouldn’t be as affective.

Layered Effect

Here i have used different layers of different filters

Layered and blend tool

Scanograms Scanography is the process of creating art/photography with a scanner can be as simple as arranging objects on the scanner and capturing the resulting image. Since the objects are often placed in contact with the scanner, there is a high potential for damage to the scanner from objects scratching or cracking the surface of the bed, or from liquids that might seep from the subject into the interior of the scanner. These risks can be mitigated by placing a layer of transparent protective material, such as clear plastic film, onto the scanner bed. Another approach is to invert the scanner, so the bed is above the subject and not quite in contact with it. Capturing a moving subject with the scanner can be viewed as a problem, or as an opportunity for artistic effect. As the subject moves during the scan, distortions are caused along the axis of the scan head’s movement, as it captures different periods of the subject’s movement line by line in a manner similar to slit-scan photography; these are forms of strip photography. The artist can use this by aligning the direction of the scan head’s movement to deliberately caused the desired distortion. Here are range of scanograms which are my own and some from the internet. The green leave and flower scan just the left is “Bryone-dioique”, a still life done on a scanner by French artist Christian Staeble. I like the detail that is involved in this scan and although everything is green you are able to see the difference in the objects in the photograph. The white flower in the top left hand corner contrasts with the green background and makes it stand out. This is a focal point inm the scan and splits up the green colours involved. I like my own scans of the flowers because they are high quality scans. I like the way that i have edited them so that some of the colours are enhanced and some look quite vintage. I have also included a scan which has been produced by a cork screw. When the scan was in process the cork screw was moved side to side to creat the effect given. I like this effect because it has breated a pattern which is different to all the normal still scans.

Scanograms of Thoughts and Feelings Here I have created a number of scanograms which relate to my chosen theme of relationships. When creating these scanograms I was looking at the work of Jim Goldberg. This is because his work includes writing of the peoples thoughts and feelings. I wanted to experiment with scanning in thoughts and feelings of people and here are the results below. I like these scanograms because all of the writing involved is from different people so their thoughts are all completely different. Some of the thoughts and feelings below and some are positive. This shows opposites as not all the thoughts and feelings are positive or negative. The quality of these scanograms are very clear and crisp so that you are able to read the messages very clearly. Some of the things written show juxtaposition. For example the message which says ‘I have no money but i have a wealth full of knowledge’. Although you are not able to see the person that this message is written about are able to paint a picture in your head when reading what it says. I like that I have a number of different words and phrases that people have written down because it shows the variety of thoughts and feelings that people have and the number of negative thoughts against the number of positive thoughts. I could use the thoughts that are written down in my final outcome or in photo shoots to come. This will show that I have used other peoples thoughts rather then using my own which will show how people are actually feeling all around us and how they are specifically feeling.

Photoshoot 1 This photograph shows the relationship between fire and water. I wanted to use opposites to create a interesting and engaging photograph. I took the two photographers separately and layered them into one photograph. I like the way that the water gives a textured feel to the photograph and makes the candle and flame look more eye catching. I like the way that the two layers contrast in colour aswell as object. This is because I have edited the water in a very dark tone whereas I have made the candle and flame stand out under the dark layer. This makes the photograph look more exciting instantly. I also like that the left half of the photograph is a block colour of black then when looking across to the right it gets lighter and lighter. I like the way that I have blended the two photographs because they look more like one photograph rather then two separate ones. This makes the photograph look more professional. I think because most of the photograph is dark shades the candle gives a big impact and dramatic feel to the photograph. I like that the water is in the foreground of the photograph right through to the background and this is because of the angle that I have taken this photograph. I think that this makes the photograph look more interesting and less empty. Having the candle just of centre draws attention to it and makes it the focus point of the photograph. The colour edit also helps to do this. Although the water and fire are opposites, in this photograph they do work well together and compliment each other. Having a limited amount of light in this photograph has benefited it. This is because it makes it look more mystirious and exciting. The whole of this photograph is in sharp focus. I think that this is a good thing because it shows what it in the top layer, the water, and clearly the candle in the bottom layer. This makes it easier to link that they are oppersites and realise what the relationship is between the two of them. I would say just under half of this photograph is filled with an object, the candle. But because i have layered the photograph with the water the rest of the photograph doesnt look empty. The dramatic circular shape that the candle makes draws your eye straight to that part of the photograph. Then there are two sharp angles creating the flame which i think also create a focus point on this photograph.

The photograph below shows the relationship between a shiny peny and a dull/rusty peny. I think that this shows a clear oppersite well because the shiny peny shows a reflection of the surface it is one where as the dull peny at the front doesnt. I think that the objects used create an interesting photograph. Although the colours are very similar they do contrast as one is very light and the other is very dark and dull. This makes you instandly realise the relationship between the two. I like that the surface the objects are on is plain so the attention isnt taken away from the pennies. The shiny penny is slightly more in focus then the dull penny and this shows that it is more perfect in a way and the dull penny is imperfect. This is another oppersite which could be used to compare the two pennies. I like that the pennies are off centre because it makes the photograph look more edging and exciting. Although they arent centre the focus point is still on them as they are the main feature in this photograph.

This photograph shows the oppersites between fire and water. I have created this photograph by using and editing a photograph of water then layering over a photograph of fire. I then blended them together so that it looks like one photograph and you are able to see the relationship between the two. The water photograph has been talen at a close up angle so that you are able to see the detail in the water droplets. I like that i have slightly darkened the photograph so that you are clear;y able to see the droplets instead of having to really look into the photograph and not understanding what it is about. The fire photograph was also taken up close using a high shutter speed so that i was able to get the detail of the flames instead of a blurred coloured photography. I do like that they are slightly blurred because it makes them look like they are motion photographs. I like that the fire photograph is slighly darker and less visible then the water photograph because it makes you look further into the photograph and it then makes you realise the oppersite relationship between the both. Although they are two oppersites the photograph works well together and doesnt look disjointed.

These photographers show the relationship between the two colours of chocolate. I like these photographers because there are interesting and different to look at. The pattern created in these photographs links the two chocolates together. The colours contrast but as they do this they blend well together and mix together making the photograph look exciting. I like the edits I have created with the photographs I took because they enhance the colours of the chocolates and this helps to show the difference between the two. I like that the top right photograph has two photographs of the chocolate blended together and parts slightly blurred which makes it look more in depth. The whole frame is full with the two colours and there isn’t really a focus point. There are aspects that stand out more then others put I like that your eye looks over the whole photographer rather then at one particular point. I have used close up shots for all of these photographs. This is so that you are able to see the pattern created clearly and crisp rather then blurred and then leave you wondering what the photograph is of. I like the edits I have created because they all look different and interesting even though they are of the same thing. I think what’s also interesting is that there isn’t a clear difference between the foreground and background. This is because I have taken these photographs at a high angle, almost parallel to the chocolate so it is hard to tell the difference. I like that there is a side of wonder because it makes the photograph more mysterious.

Photoshoot 2 The photograph below shows a telephone pole which have been placed in an alien environment ruining the environment around it. I think this is a good example of an oppersite because it is the difference between a beautiful environment and an unexciting looking feature. I like this photograph because there are two main features in the forground of this photograph. This is the tree and the telephone pole. The nature aspect (the tree) is closer to the camers showing that it is more important, more perfect looking and general more pleasant to look at. Your eye then going to the telephone pole which is slightly further back. This is a feature which is not pleasent to look at and does highlight and standout as out of place. I like the way i have edited this photograph. This is because i have enhanced the colours so that the sky looks blue and bright and the grass looks a fresh green colour.

The photograph above also relates to the theme oppersites. This is because there is a telephone pole in a countryside area and this would not usually occur. I also believe that this work relates to the work of Hans-Christian Schink. This is because he looked at beauliful environments which have been destroyed by a structure or object which ruins the landscape. Relating to oppersites, i belive that it is a perfect environment or landcape that has been ruined or destroyed by a imperfect feature. I like this photograph because you are able to see the beautiful sky, hills in the distant and nature and the edit i have used compliments this well. You are able to see clearly the telephone pole that it ruining the landscape just of centre of this photograph. I like that the telephone pole is in the foreground of this photograph because you can see clearly that it is not meant to be in the area that it is in. You are then able to see the amazing view in the background which is ruined.

The photograph to the left relates to the theme of oppersites. This is because there are structures which are unexciting to look at in an environment that have a beautiful landscape. This also relates to the work of Hans-Christian Schink because he looked are environments ruined by strustures or features which shouldnt be put in the environment they are in. I like this photograph because you are able to see the sea in the background and the blue sky which enhances the environment and makes it look beautiful just as it is. I have edited this photograph in a way that the poles/structures look like shloetes which makes the photograph look more intersting to look at. The black also contrasts with the light, bright colours that are in the backgorund. I like the angle of this photograph because the left half is the structures whereas the right side is the beautiful landscape.

Photoshoot 3

Here i have produced two photographs using used headphones and a tree. I like that a simple concept and idea can turn into a good high quality photograph. I like the photograph above because the main focus is to the right of the photograph. I like that i have edited it in a way in which the headphones are defined. I have thought about a number of things in this photograph such as the contrasting colours which relate to the theme of oppersites. The dark edit of the branches contrast with the light background/sky. I like the edit to the left because of the edit and black and white filter i have used. Tis is because it makes the photograph look draumatic and the headphones standout. The headphones are a white colour which contrast with the black branches. This also relates to the theme oppersites because of the black and white colours.

Here are a number of photographs that i have taken for my third photo shoot. The two photographs at the top show the oppersites between the two colours that i have used. I have used a white pair of headphones and a pink pair which are contrasting colours. This then links in with my theme of the relationshiom between oppersites/juxtapostion. I like the way i have edited these photographs because i havent over edited them so that the image is distorted. The photographs along the bottom show the relationship between a broken mirror and a clean mirror. This also defines what type of reflection the mirror conveys. You can see the photograph which it furthest to the left is the clean mirror. This mirror shows a clear, crisp reflection which backups that the mirror is not broken or scrached. The photograph to the furthest right shows the broken mirror. The broken mirror gives a more blurred reflection. I like the way that i have edited these photographs because i have subtly edited them so i have increased the opacity. I think have helped to create these photographs was the natural lighting. As i took these photographs on a bright, sunny day the quality of the photographs are much better then if my photographs were taken on a dull, dark day. This makes them to a higher standard.

Techniques Using Photoshop Black and white layering & blur effect

Harrison Shutter Effect

Opacity and Repetition

Here I have used opacity and repetition to create this photo edit. I first copied the layer of the photograph a number of times and alternately flip each photograph to create a repetitive pattern. I then decreased the opacity on each of the layers so that you are able to see each layer. I like this photo edit because the photograph looks very mysterious and interesting with the different layers.

Blur, and blend effect

Here i have changed the opacity of two of the layers and moved them to the left.

Here I have created a two layer photo edit. I first edited a photograph in black and white in Photoshop. I then layered another photograph on top and decreased the opacity this is so that you were able to see the black and white photograph underneath. I like this photo edit because I have used two different photography’s and worked them together to create one photograph. I like that I have used one colour photograph and one black and white photograph because it makes the edit look more different and unique.

Here is a mix of photographs which I have taken and some which are photographers photographs. I decided to choose the theme of opposites because I liked the ideas that the photographers had when taking their photographs. I like that you may not be able to tell the idea behind the photograph first of all but when you look further into the photograph and work out the hidden message the photograph comes together and works well. I like that there are opposites in many things. For example you are able to have an opposite between two objects, a person and an environment or a environment and an object. This makes taking the photographs more interesting. I have explored the theme in a number of different ways. I started to look at the relationship between objects. For example a dead flower and a beautiful, fresh flower or a perfect cake and a crushed cake. I then started to look at some photographers which use some kind of opposite in their work. I first looked at Hans-Cristian Schink. He has looked at the relationship between an environment and a structure which has ruined the area or destroyed it. I like his idea of having a beautiful landscape or environment then a horrible looking structure or feature is placed in it to ruin it. I then looked at Jim Goldberg. Goldberg made a series of photographs looking at rich and poor people and the difference between their thoughts and feelings. This was shown by the people actually hand writing their thoughts so it was made more personal. I liked the ides of this because you are able to connect with the photograph more and put yourself in their position by thinking their thoughts and looking at where they are in the photographs. I learnt that there doesn’t just have to be an opposite in an object to object or an environment to environment. I like that you are able to relate from object to person or object to environment. This makes the photographs look more interesting and exciting.

So Far...

I have interpreted Jim Goldberg rich and poor series by using a rich man who has recently lost all of his money to business problems and is now living as a poor man. This shows an opposite of rich and poor and also in the photographs the man is in a suit standing by a derelict property. This shows another opposite. I like that you are able to see the opposite straight away but the story behind the photograph is unknown. It makes the photograph seem more interesting and makes you think of scenarios that could have happened to the man in the photograph. I have also taken some photographs which relate to the work of Han-Christian Schick. This photographs are of environments which have been destroyed or ruined in some kind of way. I like that the environment is very attractive so you are able to see the clear difference between it and the feature which has destroyed it.

So Far...

I have also taken some photographs which show the relationship between object to object. I have looked at the relationship between different colours of chocolate, a shiny coin and a dull, rusty coin and fire and water. This is because I wanted to see and create photographs which work well together and not look disjointed even though they are opposites. This then shows that just because there is an opposite doesn’t mean they look horrible together. I have used auto, manual and shutter speed when taking my photographs. I have used auto and manual because I have used a number of different camera angles and I wanted to produce the best set of photographs that I could. I have used shutter speed because some of my photographs have had items in them which are moving so I wanted to get a sharp focus.

I have edited my photographs first in camera raw enhancing them, making them black and white etc. I have then edited some of my photographs in photograph blurring them, layering them to produce some interesting and exciting photographs. To improve my photographs I could use a technique which Jim Goldberg used. Goldberg used scanography to add the thoughts and feelings of the people in his photographs. This will then add another technique to my photographs and make them of a higher standard. I think what also would make my photographs to a better standard would to be using more extreme camera angles. This will make my photograph look more engaging and interesting to look at. I would like to look further into scanography and use it in my work to make my photographs stand out from others. Scanography is also another technique which will enhance my photographs. I think following the theme of opposites will be a really good ides to take forward because I have created some high quality photographs and edits which are interesting and exciting to look at. I think I need to develop further the interpretations photo-shoot. This is because I could include the technique of scanography and look more closely into idea around Jim Goldbergs Rich and Poor series. This then also relates to the theme of opposites. When thinking of display strategies I would think of a series of photographs looking at the idea of opposites between a person and an environment. This would then relate to the series of photographs that Jim Goldberg produced because he looked at poor people in their environment or rich people in their environment. This thoughts and feelings that they put across then maybe the opposite to what their living state was or what problems

Gillian Wearing

Gillian Wearing produces both photographs and videas which reveal the disconnect between our inner lives and public personas, the individual and society, and truth and fiction. Among Gillians most famous works is Signs That Say What You Want Them to Say and Not Signs That Say What Someone Else Wants You to Say (1992–93), for which Gillain stopped hundreds of passersby in London, invited them to write whatever they wished on a white card, and photographed them. Like all of Wearing’s work, the portraits in this series convey the startling, unsettling divide between one’s outside appearance and innermost self. The photographs that Wearing took were surprisingly revealing, intentionally and not – the City worker with thinning hair who scrawled “I’m desperate”, the black policeman who wrote “Help”. They not only gave her subjects a voice, they gave viewers an instant snapshot of worlds of interiors. Gillain Wearing does not see her art as therapeutic or even particularly voyeuristic. Gillian suggests, out of the “sense that it is better to speak than to hold things back”. Wearing has been strongly influenced by the sociology of Erving Goffman, author of The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, in which he details the ways that we have “frontstage and backstage personalities, that we perform all the time, when we walk down the street, when we go into a shop. And when we are behind closed doors we go into a bit of a slump”. I like the idea of Gillian Wearings work and i think that it fits in nicely with the theme that i have chosen within the main theme of relationships. I think this because many of the photographs that Gillian Wearing took were people holding up signs which were the oppersite to what they looked like. This is specially the case with the man in a clean crisp suit holsing a sign saying “I’m desperate”. I have created a couple of photo shoots which relate to Gillians Wearings work but i have also added in the idea of oppersites and juxtapostion as this is my theme with in relationships. I have also created this idea by using facial expressions and fashion to reveal the hidden messages.

Reshoot one

Here I have taken photographs which are re shoots for my interpretations. I looked at the photographer Jim Goldberg who looked at the series of Rich and Poor and created photographs around this idea. I have used a model and dressed her in poor style clothes to represent a ‘tramp’. I have then used a sign which states ‘Don’t feel sorry for me, I have a happy life’ which juxtaposes the look of the model. This then links in with the work of Jim Goldberg and the theme of opposites. I like the first photograph because it is taken from a high angle looking down on the model. The edit is subtle but effective which makes the photograph look of a high quality. I have taken it from a side angle which makes the photograph look more interesting and exciting. I model isn’t looking at the camera and into the distance and you are able to see clearly by looking at the clothes that she is a poor girl. I like the second photograph in the middle because I have used a eye level shot which shows the whole length of the model. I have enhanced the photography so that the clothes are more bright and more eye catching. This is so that if someone was to look at the photograph they would instantly think that she was a poor lady. The environment around the person is a public area where if you were homeless would be a likely place to stay. The tramp is in a run-down area and you are able to tell this by the broken, rusty gate she is by. I like the third photograph to the right because of the angle I have used. I have used a very eye level/straight on angle with the model looking straight into the camera. I really like this photography you are able to see the tatty old shoes and the dirty jumper which you instantly associate with a poor person. I have edited this photograph in a very subtle way keeping the colour quite similar to the original.

Here I have taken a number of photographs in a number of different locations. This is because if a poor person didn’t have a place to live then they would travel around finding places to sleep on the streets and go round in public places. Her facial expressions may look tired and upset but that it because she is tired of travelling around. I have then used the sign which juxtaposes with the model to show the opposite and the relationship because the upsetting looking ‘tramp’ and the sign saying she have a ‘happy life’. I really like the photograph of the model on the bench lying down. This is because it is a typical pose/position a ‘tramp’ would lie in. Having the sign facing this way slightly makes it easier to read and having the model slightly holding it makes it relate to her. I like that this photograph is edited in black and white because it makes a link with the person in the photograph that she is stripped of everything. I also like the edit at the bus stop because it is an environment you are likely to see a ‘tramp’ in. The model is only slightly holding the sign which shows that she is tired and upset. Her facial expressions also compliment this.

Here are two more edits that I have completed when doing my re shoots. I like the edit to the left because I have used a dramatic angle. This is a side view close up angle. I have included part of her jacket she is wearing so that you are able to see the dirt that is on it. You are also able to see the mud that is on her face which shows she isn’t a clean lady. This makes you instantly think she is of a lower class. I like the edit above because the tramp doesn’t look as unhappy as she does in over photographs. This then relates to the sign she is holding and shows that she does actually have a happy life. The edit makes the photograph look more old and vintage which gives a good feel to the photograph.

I like the range of photographs that I have used in this photograph. This is because I have used the same environment but different angles to show this. The photograph at the top left is a long shot. This is the model is far away from the camera. I like this photograph because the fences either side create lines which make the photograph focus on the model. They draw your eye to the middle of the photograph where the model it. Although the model is far from the camera, you are still able to read the sign which is held in front of her and her face. Although you aren’t able to make of her facial expressions you are able to look at her body language which relates to the idea of this photograph. The photograph below (to the left) is a more closer shot. This is so that you are able to see her facial expressions more clearly. Although you are only able to see a limited amount of her clothing, you are able to see her shows which look old and ruined. This then makes you think what her life is like. You are also able to see by the sign which is battered and muddy. This photograph is taking from quite a low angle/eye level which gives a good effect to the photograph. I then took a photograph from a high angle looking down on the person (top right photograph). This is because as the person is of a lower class, looking down on the person gives a greater impact. I then took some photographs from a side angle. The photograph at the top in the middle is from a high, side angle. I like the edit because it is in a enhanced black and white which makes the darker black stand out. This is the models clothing and the sign. I like the edit to the right as it is a low angle and it is almost like you are looking at what they would be seeing everyday.

Reshoot Two

Here I have taken a series of photographs using the theme of opposites and the use of juxtaposition. These photographs show a upper class lady who wears wealthy clothes but her facial expressions does not represent happiness. This juxtaposes the wealth of the lady with the gum look on her face. I like the first photograph because the lady is posing in a very lady like way with her legs crossed. This symbolises the wealth of the lady. The objects that are involved in this photograph look very upper class and could be expensive which relate to the look of the lady. Then when you look at her facial expressions you can see that she hasn’t got a smile and she is slightly frowning. The second photograph is the same position but I have used a different angle. This is because I wanted to be more adventurous and take a low angle shot. I like this angle because you are able to see a side view of her facial expressions and they are too not uplifting. The third photograph to the right is a more close up shot. This is so that you are able to see a close up of the objects which look rather expensive. You are able to see her facial expressions more clearly which juxtaposes the way she looks.

These two photographs relate to the theme juxtaposition and the relationship between the two opposites. The first photograph to the left is taken from a high angle so you are able to see a lot of detail and figure out what this photograph is trying to convey. By looking at the models clothing you can see she is a upper class citizen. Then when you look at her facial expressions you are able to see that she isn’t happy. If someone was of a higher class you would except them to be happy because they are able to do a lot of things that maybe other people cant. I like the sharp black and white edit that I have created with this photograph. This is because the black or white highlights areas which creates a focus point of the photograph. For example the edit enhances the ladies cheekbones making them more defined. I like the second photograph because here you are able to see another area which represents she feelings. The lady is sitting slightly hunched which could represent she is giving up. That she isn’t bothered and she is feeling glum. I like the colour edit that I have created because the lady looks very vibrant and bright where as the background is dull and dark. This fits in with the idea of opposites and juxtaposition. Although I haven’t used a sign in this photograph I have used another way of conveying messages across to the person which is looking at the photograph. I like that it isn’t that obvious to see that the photograph it trying to convey but when looking closer you are able to start to realise the meaning of this photograph.

i took this photograph becaise it shows a person who is wearing fancy clothes which look expensive. Also the girl is sat on a chair which looks posh and could also be expensive. Sterotipically this person would be happy becasue she is wealthy. This girls facial expressions tell a different story as she looks very glum and unhappy. This shows the juxtapostion between the two manin focuses in this photograph. I like this photograph because it is taken from a high angle so you are able to see all the detail in the photograph. It makes it different from a mid shot. I also like that this photograph shows that she is sat upright which relates to the wealth ascept of this photograph and on the other hand you are able to see clearly her facial expressions. Although this photograph isnt a close up you are still able to see clearly that she isnt happy. I like that i have created because it relates to the mood of the girl in the photograph. The edit is quite dark and doesnt make any of the colours in the photographh bright and exciting.

Techniques Using Photoshop Harrison Shutter Effect

Here I have created an edit using the blur and flip tool. I first duplicated the layer 3 times and flipped two of them and moved them into the correct place. I then blurred the two outer photographs so that they created a less visible effect. I like this edit because I have only blurred the outline of the person so the background of the photograph is still all in focus. I like that this photograph is very symmetrical looking as it makes the proportions of the photograph look even.

Blur and Flip Tool

Here I have created a digital edit using the technique of flip. I first duplicated the layer so that I got two of the same photograph. I then decreased the opacity of the layer on top so that it is more transparent. I then rotated this photography 180 degrees. This meant that you were then able to see the photograph underneath. I like this edit because I have decreased the opacity quite a bit so that you are able to see the photograph underneath clearly and then the layer on top is faint but you are still able to see parts of the photograph.

Flip Tool Here I have used the Harrison shutter effect. I have created three layers and applied the effect to each. I then moved each of the layered to create to coloured effect that you are able to see of the left. I like that the photograph isn’t completely distorted as you are able to see the original photograph in this edit.

Harrison Shutter Effect

Manual Edits

Here i have created a manual edit using one of my reshoot photographs. I have cut around the person in the photograph and then stuck it back down to the background but moving it slightly to the left. I like this manual edit because i havent none much to the photograph but i have created an interesting effect. I think that this manual edit was created accurately and neatly so the outline cut of the person is cut well. I like that this effect creates a thick, white border around the person which makes them stand out. This is good because it makes the person the main focus point of the photograph. The border draws your eye to the focal point. To improve this manual edit i could add more techniques to the background of the photograph. This is because i havent manually edited the background of this. I could sew around the seats or add coloured card to emphasis parts of the photograph to make them stand out and contrast with the rest of the photograph. I could write text on the photograph to convey the girls thoughts and feelings so the audience are able to get an insight and better understanding on the girl and what she is all about. This with make more clear of what the meaning of the photograph is all about.

Here I have created a manual edit combining three different photographs. I used three different digital edited photographs to make the edit look more interesting. I have cut two of the photographs in equal strips. I then combined them so that they interlocked alternately and slotted together. I then got another one of my re shoot photographs and cut of the person from it. This left me just the person without the background. I then places this photograph on top of the other photographs along one of the strips. I like this edit because I haven’t just used one edit but I have combined three. I like that there isn’t just one focal point in this photograph. As I have used three different photographs there are many different focal points. For example the girls face occurs in all three of the photographs so I would say that they are three focal points. I like the I have used repetition with the strips but then I have broken that up with the cut of girl at the bottom of the edit. To improve this manual edit I could add more manual techniques so that it adds interested to the edit. For example I could add stitching to outline the faces so that they are more visible and stand out more. I could also add acetate of one of my re shoot photographs and layer it on the these photographs to the left. This would then combine another photograph into the edit in a different way. Instead of having a white background I could have another photograph as the background. This would make the piece look less plain and more exciting and full of colour. To relate to my theme of opposites and juxtaposition I could interlock two opposite photographs instead of photographs which are relating to the same story. This would therefore link to my chosen theme even more. I think this also could make the edit look more different and unique.

Here i have created three manual edits. The first edit to the top left was done by cutting up the photograph into strips and leaving a gap inbetween them. I have created the second edit to the bottom left by tearing the sides of the photograph and scrunching it up. I then tea stained the photograph to create a vintage type effect. The third edit just above was created by burning the edges of the photograph creating an original shape. I like the way that the shape isnt regualar and it is almost random.

Here I have created a manual edit using two photographs. I have cut out shapes from the photograph on the top so that you are then able to see some of photograph underneath. I like that you are only able to see part of the photograph underneath and some of the photograph on top is taken away. I think that this creates a really interesting effect.

Here i have created a manual edit using two photographs. I first cut aroun the girl in teo photographs i took then placed them onto a piece of paper. I then used colurs when the photographs and drew traingles in the blank spaces. I like that i have deen this because firstly the colours link and secondly the triangles fill the blank space. I like that i have cut out the person from the photographs because it makes the photograph look more mystirouis with out the background and environment that it was in. To make this edit better i could add some more photographs of just the person in the photograph and create a big picture and piece.

Here I have created a manual edit using stitching. I have stitched around the sign to make it more bold and the main focal point. This is so that people read the sign and understand the meaning of the photograph. I like the stitch because it is in a solid black colour. If I was to only stitch once round each of the sides then it wouldn’t be as clear. If I wanted to improve this edit I could add in different coloured threads which contrast with the black and white digital edit.

Techniques Cropping

Cropping refers to the removal of the outer parts of an image to improve framing, accentuate subject matter or change aspect ratio. Depending on the application, this may be performed on a physical photograph, artwork or film footage, or achieved digitally using image editing software. Cropping is a term used to simply cut away some at the edges, to include less area in the final image. Cropping is a little like zooming in a little tighter, but done afterwards. Cropping is the same action as scissors on paper except you are able to enlarge it later. Cropping discards those trimmed pixels, making the image dimensions smaller, but primarily it changes the scene included, and often the shape too. A camera always makes its images of the same one shape (aspect ratio, which is width:height), but the intended use often needs other shape(s), to fit it to the printed paper size or viewing screen size. A little cropping often improves the composition of many images, removing uninteresting blank nothingness around the edges, concentrating the actual subject larger (zooming tighter, so to speak). I like many of these cropping edits because each of them looks like a completely different photograph. They all zoom in on different parts of the original photograph. If i was to only crop a small section of this photograph you would not be able to see much difference in each of the photographs. Even through you may not beable to work out what the photograph is, i like that it is unknown but the shapes displayed still work together.

Techniques Rotation

Here i have used an original photograph and rotated it in a number of ways so that it creates an interesting effect and pattern. I like the first rotation photograph because the photographed are almost mirrored upright and downwards. The second rotation using the photographs in the middle i have used down from left to right. This creates a different and unique effect. In the third rotation edit i have just rotated it downwards so that it mirrors it. I like all of these edits because although they are the same technique they all look different in there own and unique way.

Here i have again used the technique of rotation. Instead of using the normal square or rectangle shape i was placed the same photograph in a number of hexagons. I then rotated the first row left and right alternately then the second row upside down. I then repeated this twice. I really like this edit because the photographs are laid out in a very unique matter and in a shape that isnt usually used. I like that this photograph is edited first in black and white because it gives a greater impact to the photograph. As this photograph is in a sharp black and white colour it compliments with the sharp shaoes involved in the hexagons. As i have used the same photograph in each hexagon it makes the piece look more together rather then all disjointed.

Techniques Repetition

Here i have used the technique of repetition. Repetition is where the same photograph is repetited a number of times in a certain way. Here i have taken an image and made it larger and larger four times. I have then decreased the opacity so that it fades out gradually. I like this photograph edit using repetition because you are able to see the full photograph at the front but then as the photographs underneath are behind you are only able to see parts of them. This makes this edit look almost 3D because of the effect it gives.

I have also used the technique repetition here but using the different sized circles. Although i have used the same photograph in each of the circles i have changed the size of each one. This is so that you are able to see diferent parts of the photograph in each one. I like this idea because it is interesting and different to look at. The shape used isnt a standard square or rectangle. I like that i have also incorporated the repepition edit i created on the page above because it makes the piece more complex to look at.

Here i have created some pieces using the technique of image wraping. This ia where a photograph is places in a section of text and inside of it sitting over the top of it, the text moves around the image. This is good so that the text can refer to the photograph and you are able to view the photograph easily. I like both of the text wraping i have done because the one to the left shows an image right in the certain of the text,. The second image wrapping above shows an image to the edge of of a text box.

Possible Ideas found on Pintrest

Here are two possible ideas that i have found on pintest. I like the first idea because all the pieces make in the piece relate to each other and work together well. The photograph is first digitally edited to get rid of the features on the face. The features are then on the top of this and have been digitally edited into a washing line style set. This ides has then beenmanually edited by having a piece of spring infront of the photograph with a peg and a plan piece of paper. I like that although there is a mix of both manual and digital edits, it all works really well togther and they all link well together. I like the second idea because it is one photograph which has been cut up and put onto a number of different boards. I like that the boards are all different sizes because it makes the idea more random. I like that these boards have then been placed onto a black board because it then contrasts with the light edit the photograph has.

Here are three possible ideas which i think are really intresting and of a high quality. I like the first possible idea because it uses photographs of the same type of thing. I like that the shape used is consistant but different sizes and is in different positions so some look bigger then others. I also like that the photographs have all been edited in the same way so they have then same colour tone. This brings the piece all together and links each of the circles together.

I like the second idea because they have purely manually edited the photograph. The photograph has been cut into different shapes and placed over other photographs. This creates a different effect without ruining the photograph completely and over cutting it. I look that you are able to still make out the photograph even though it has been manually edited alot. I like the third edit because a portrait photograph and a landscape photograph has been used and put together creating one photograph. I like that you are able to see the difference between the two photograpghs but because similar colours as used the fit well together. Pintrest Source

Here i have found a possible idea that i really like. This is because both manual and digital edits have been used. The photographs have first been digitally edited in the same why which instantly links them together. The photographs have then been stitched over in a orange tread which contrasts nicely with the dakr coloured photograph edits. Pieces of string have then been attached from photograph to photograph which link them all together. I like that the string used to connect them is all the same colour and is a colour tone which is similar to the photographs. This then links that together. I think that the look of this idea is to a high standard and very presentable. The piece is in the style of a messy look which is obvious. This makes it a more unique piece and lets is stand out more infront of other pieces produced.

Here i have some found some more examples of possible ideas which i like. I like the ides to the far left because a number of techniques have been used. The photographs have first been edited digitally. They have then been placed in frames and hung at different legths. String has then also been hung so that the photographs all relate to eachother. The string used is a yellow tone which relates and works well together with the yellow effect that has been put on photographs digitally. I like that all of the frames and photographs are different shapes and sizes because it adds variation to the piece itself.

I like the ides above to the right because it has been edited digitally very well. This piece focuses more on the digital edit. I like it because the colour which has been layered on top is a very plain and dull colour. Also the photograph shows a hidden message which relates to what the pieces looks like because the person in the photograph is only a fraction revealed. Then the pieces underneath are brightly colour and contrast with the dull colour. I like the edit to the bottom right because it has been manually edited to a very high standard. This idea is very unique and different from others and the ideas used are to a high quality.

Here are a number of edits and possible ideas that I have found on pintrest which I like. I like the first one to the far left of this page because of the sharp angles and edges which have been used. These make the edit look more dramatic. I also like the bright colours that have been used it makes the piece more eye catching. Even though the piece is simple it is effective in the way it used colour and sharp angles. I also like the piece which is to the bottom right of this page. This is because it is a 3D structure which is eye catching and appealing to look at. I like that a shape has been used to create the piece.

Possible Ideas -Layouts

Here i have created several ideas of layouts that i could possibly use for my final piece. The first one is a sturctural piece with hanging photographs in. The photographs are in hexagon shapes with oppersite meaning on each side. For example on one side of the photograph there would be a photograph of a person from a lower class but states or shows that they are happy and on the other side it could show a person from a higher class but showing that they are not happy. I have also drawn circle and square/ rectangle layouts. These layouts would be could into a frame to be presented. I like the structure idea as it is very 3D and visual where as with a framed piece there is only one side to view. I could use the idea of oppersites on both sides of the piece so show the link between the two photographs.

Possible Ideas -To help prepare for a mock up

Here i have used the shape of a hexagon to create a series of photographys look good in an interesting way. I like that it almost shows a story of the person in the photographs and the different edits used makes the pattern look more eye catching. I have done the same below but using a different photoshoot that i have done. The two photoshoot, the one above and one below, are oppersites as the meanings of them are different. The top photoshoot uses a poorer person dressed in clothes which back this up but the sign tells use that the women has a happy life. This shows the juxtapostion between an object and a person. The photographs below show a lady who looks very upper class by looking at the clothes she is wearing but then her facial expressions are very dull and gloomy. This is the juxtaposition between the look of the lady and facial expressions. I think that creating a structure with the photographs above on one side and then the photographs below on the other side would create a interesting idea.

Possible Ideas -To help prepare for a mock up

Here i have created a possible idea of one photograph which is split into different hexagons. The hexagons join together to create the photograph. Making this on foam board will make it more 3D and into an interesting structure. If i was to do this standing up i would use one photo on one side of the piece and then one photograph of something different on ther other side. This would link in with the idea of oppersites and juxaposition which is what i have been looking at. I could manually edit this photograph by sewing on it or cutting up parts of the photograph and sticking it in different places. I could also add acitate to make it look more different and interesting. Making a 3D final outcome would make my piece look more effective and you would be able to see the theme really well.

Mock Up Here i have created a mock up for my final outcome. I have created a 3D structure which which included photographs on every section. I have used hexagon shapes of foam board and stuck them together to create a circle shape. I have then put photographs in the outside and the inside of the structure. The photographs on the outside shows a person from a lower class. You are able to tell this by looking at the clothing that the person is dressed in. The juxtapostion about these photographs in the sign that is located in some of them. I like that i have used a variety of different coloured edits for each of the photographs. I like the shape of this 3D structure because it is an interesting structure yet it have purpose and meaning using the use of oppersites. I think that i have neatly presented this mock up and it would complete it equally as neatly in my exam. From looking at the mock up photographs you are able to see that the photographs are the same size as the hexagon shaped foamboards so they arent too big and over lap other photographs or so small that you are able to see the foamboard. The hexagons are stuck together neatly with no excess glue which would ruin the look of the piece. Improvements: To improve my my mock up i think i need to include more manual techniques. These techniques include stitching, cutting or acitate etc. I think that tis would give my piece a more higher standard look and apperance. I could add stitching to individual photographs to outline shapes or fill in backgrounds. Using different coloured threads would more the piece stand out more and make it more eye catching. If i was to cut up images i could merge photographs together or add coloured bits of paper to the piece to make it more manual rather than digital looking. I also think that i could digitally edit the photographs more using photoshop. This is so that i show of my skills and editing techniques and use them to my advantage. This would increase the standard of my final format.

Mock Up Here i have completed my second mock up for my final outcome. I like the way that this mock up links in with the mock up on the previous page. I have used layers of hexagons in a S shape to build up one photograph. I like that the shape of this mock up isn’t in a straight line because it makes the piece more unique and interesting. I like that i have just used one photograph to create the outcome rather that lots of different photographs. This makes it different to the first mock up and shows variation in my work. I am happy that when producing this mock up that all of the pieces of the photograph lined up to that it looks neat and tidy. I think that this piece looks to a high standard because all of the hexagons are the same size and shape and join nicely together. There is no glue which has marked the photographs or been accidentally put in the wrong place.

Improvements: To improve this mock up for my final outcome i think i could add more manual edits. These consist of sewing, acetate, cutting and stitching etc. These manual techniques would make my piece look more exciting and interesting rather than just having a plain photograph. I think that i could also digitally edit my photograph more using Photoshop. For example i could add more layers and blur or change the opacity of the photograph. This would add more interest to the photograph itself. I also think that i could add a photograph to the back of this structure. This would then relate to my theme of relationships as the photograph would be of the opposite side of the piece. I could also choose a photograph which has opposite aspects to the photograph on the front of the piece.

Evaluation My chosen topic is relationships and I have chosen to look further into the relationship between opposites and the juxtaposition between two objects, people or environments. My final outcome is based on the juxtaposition between and person and their thought and feelings and how they display them. I have used my re shoot photographs which firstly show a person relating their feelings using an object. This object is a board which reads ‘Don’t feel sorry for me I have a happy life’. This shows the person relating their feeling using objects rather then speaking them as this isn’t possible on a still photograph. My other re shoot photographs show a person in an environment which looks upper class. You are able to tell this because of the objects that surround her and the clothing that she is wearing. Stereotypically you would say that this person is wealthy so would be happy and cheery with bright, happy smiles. This isn’t the case because the person is looking glum and unhappy. So therefore these two sets of re shoot photographs show juxtaposition is two different ways. I thought that this was a successful and the best photo shoot I have completed so I decided to use these photographs. I have produced a 3d structure for my final outcome. It includes digital techniques using photo shoot such as blending, layering, opacity setting, blurring, black and white etc. I wanted to show a range of skills using Photoshop so show my ability. I them used a number of manual edits on my final outcome. These include scoring, cutting, sticking, the use of foam board, stitching, embroidery threads and drawing/writing. All of these techniques also show a range of skills and the ability to use them. I firstly produced a double sided curved 3D hexagon piece which stands up vertically. To start with I stitched on my photographs so that I was then able to cute them out. I used black thread on one of the photographs and white on the other. The reason for this was so that it showed a contract and my theme for this work is about opposites and contrasts. I had to use foam board in an effective way. I then layered two photographs on my work (one each side) making sure all of the pieces were in line and accurately put onto the piece. After making this structure I make another structure which was a circle shape built up with hexagons. This was so that it related to my other structure I made. On this piece I also used the double sided photograph idea. This was because I wanted to show the both opposites on each side because that links in with my theme of juxtaposition. On these photographs I used the techniques I listed above such are scoring, drawing, stitching, sticking, cutting and the use of embroidery threads. When stitching and using the threads I used the same black and white colour so that it shows the use of opposites and how I have linked it all together. I them used a piece of mount board to bring all my work together. I first wrote quotes, phases and word all over the base of the mount board which link to the persons thoughts and feelings. This is because I have looked at the relationship between a person and how they are thinking/what they are thing about. I wrote these thoughts in a thick black pen so that they were eye catching and visual to see. I then glued both of my structures onto the mount board so that they are presented nicely and well. I also used some embroidery threads (coloured black and white) to highlight the idea of opposites, juxtaposition and a contrast/difference between the two. The digital techniques I used where using photo shoot such as blending, layering, opacity setting, blurring and black and white. I used these techniques to show that I am able to use Photoshop in an effective way creating successful edits . The manual techniques I used were scoring, cutting, sticking, the use of foam board, stitching, embroidery threads and drawing/writing. I used these techniques because they all look visually different and show a range of skills using my hands. I explored many ideas before making my final outcome. Firstly I looked at edits. I tried out many manual edits on my photographs to see visually what they would look like. I tried out techniques such as ripping/tearing, scrunching of paper, tea stain and layering. These were the techniques that I did not use in my final piece. I did not include ripping/tearing and scrunching of the photographs because I think that they would have looked messy for my piece and ruin the look of my final outcome. If I was using a scrapbook type piece then these techniques would link in much better. I did not use tea strain because when using it on my photographs it made them go wrinkly and shrivelled. I don’t think that this effect would look good with my ideas and my final outcome. I did use a bit of laying in my final piece on the small photographs but I didn’t just use the rectangle layering. I used shapes such as triangles to make the piece look more interesting and unique. I also explored many layouts when looking at possible ideas. I first looked at layouts which would do in a frame. I found some interesting joiners which were displayed in a good layout. I also found 3D pieces. I think that these pieces were more visual and interested me more when looking at them. This is why my final outcome is a 3D structure. I think that my work does explore the theme that I have looked at. This is because I have shown the relationship between different objects, people, and environments. This shows that I have used a range of shots and camera settings to complete these photographs. I then wanted to explore a more complex topic for my re shoot photographs and I think that this is way they have come out the best. I could take my work further by using more people, including a range of different cultures, social classes, ages and genders, to link in with the theme of opposites and juxtaposition. I think that with this I would be able to look at their thoughts and feelings more and look at a clear difference between the person and the thoughts that they are feeling. Also to take my work further I could look at the different feelings which are related between female and males. This may show some opposite thoughts and feelings that each of the gender portray. The first photographer that I looked at was Hans-Cristian Schink. This photographer takes photographs looking at the juxtaposition between an environment and a man made structure. For example one of his pieces of a bridge which has disrupted and destroyed the natural environment. I have taken from his work the realisation of the opposites in the photograph. I have also looked at Jim Goldberg. Jim Goldberg produced a number of photographs in a series of Rich and Poor. These photographs had the thoughts and feelings of the person in the photograph. I took from this photographs work the difference between the Rich and Poor and the thoughts and feelings that each of the people in the photographs were feeling. This was because some of the photographs had upper class people in but their thoughts wouldn’t relate to a stereotypically rich person. This shows that I have looked at the opposites in the photographs between the people. The last photographer I looked at was Gillian Wearing. Gillan Wearing produces photographs of people holding up signs of their thoughts. Many of the photographs that Wearing took were of people with thoughts and feelings which you wouldn’t expect. My work links in with the photographs work because firstly I have looked at the idea of opposites. All of the photographers I have looked at use opposites in one way or another. Secondly, I have looked at peoples thoughts and feelings and how they express them either using an object or by their facial expressions. I understand that there is a relationship between many objects, people, environments etc. that you may not realise straight away. This is because some things take a while to realise and some are harder to figure out. I also understand that there is relationships between not just one thing but there could be many a things that it links too. I have understood that there are relationships between colours and textures and these can link in with the relationship between objects or environments.

Evaluation Continued... My own ideas emerged by first looking at the photographers that I chose to look at. This is firstly from Hans-Cristian Schink to through to Gillian Wearing. I looked at each of the photographers work and picked out parts from photographs that they have produced and merged them together to make photographs of my own. I wanted to put my own little twist on all of the photographs so that they weren’t copying the photographs but had similar aspects to them. I developed my investigation by looking at ways to make my work different and original. I wanted to develop my camera skills and use different angles and types of shots so that my photographs looked to a higher standard and increasing standard when doing more and more photo shoots. I looked at different photographs throughout this project so that I gathered more and more ideas and skills so that my photographs improved throughout. I used a number of different websites when researching my photographers. This gave me an indication to what their work was about and the types of photographs they took. Many of the photographers that I researched had their own websites with their information on which was also useful to look at as it gave me a feel for their work. The photographers that I looked at were very important when developing my work. This was because they gave me many ideas for my own work. I was most influenced by Jim Goldberg and Gillian Wearings work. This is because firstly Jim Goldbergs work was very personal and touching. The photographs in the series ‘Rich and Poor’ had many thoughts and feelings on which were written by the people in the photographs. Secondly Gillian Wearing work influenced me because she also had a very personal touch to her photographs. This was because her photographs showed people holding signs of their thoughts and feelings. This is were I got my ideas about people portraying their thoughts and feelings and how much you are able to connect to the photograph on a personal note. I used a number of materials, techniques and processes in my work. The techniques I used were both digital and manual. The digital techniques that I used ranged from blurring and blending to layering and the Harrison shutter effect. The manual edits ranged from cutting and sticking to scoring and the use of foam board. I also used the process of scanography. This was using a scanner to produce photographs using materials which related to my theme. I also used techniques such as repetition, cropping and rotation. This made interesting patterns and pieces. Jim Goldberg used written on his photographs of the peoples thoughts and feelings which is a techniques that I used in my final outcome on the mount board. Testing the techniques and processes that I completed made me see which ones work well together and which techniques look scruffy or out of place. After every photo shoot that I have completed I have completed an evaluation. This has helped me to look at feedback that I have given myself and improve on the work I have completed. This meant that I could improve at each stage rather then for example very other stage otherwise the development wouldn’t have been as well done. Before selecting my final outcome I looked at a number of layouts from pintrest. This gave me ideas about how I was going to display my final piece. I then created some of my own so that I wasn’t copying the pieces on pintrest and my piece was unique and original. I looked at different shapes and structures to then come to the piece that I produced myself.

Final Piece Photographs

Here are some photographs on my final piece. I like my final piece because it shows a range of digital and manual edits throughout. I like that it is 3D because in my opinion is is very much visual. You are able to view my piece from a number of angles because i have placed phographs on many different sides. The photographs to the left show that i have prepared for the writing on the piece of mount board. I first draw in pencil so that the spelling and grammar were correct then i wrote in pen. I like that i randomly placed the words on the board rather then writing them in a certain direction or line. The photographs above and to the left show my finished final piece. I like the way i layed out my final piece. This is because you are able to see all of the photographs from different angles and views and see all of the techniques i have used. I like that the manual edits work well with the digital edits. This is important otherwise the final look of the piece would have been how i wanted it to be. I like the double sided piece at the back of the mount board because i wanted to focus on more digital editing. I have used Photoshop to create the edits then i just did some stitching over features of both of the photographs.

Photo Shoot Plan - Mind Map

Main aim of photo shoot

Date of photo shoot 3rd February 2015

The main aim of this photo shoot was to take photographs which relate to the theme relationships.

Shutter speed range (secs) 1/60 - 1/1600

Aperture range(f numbers) 3.1 - 6.4

ISO 3.1 - 6.4

Light source Artifical light - Lamp

Photo shoot ideas I want to create a a photo shoot which shows my chosen theme within relationships which is juxtapostion/oppersites. This photo shoot would have objects which are clear opppsite. For example a dead flower and a alive flower or a dirty shoe and a clean shoe. I want to show to person looking at the photographs that i have a clear on what i have chosen to specifically look into. I want to use a range of close ups so that you are able to see the clear difference between the objects.

Photo shoot evaluation I think that the photo shoot that I completed was successful because it clearly shows the relationship between the two objects. I like the way that I have taken close ups of the objects as you are able to see clearly what they are. I also like that objects that I selected because they have created some interesting and exciting photographs. I think to improve on what I have done so far is to use people, environments and objects. For example I could look at the relationship between a persona and the environment they are in and how they juxtapose. Other thought is to look at the relationship between an object and an environment. This could make my photograph look my interesting and have more messages to convey.

Photo Shoot Plan - Photographers Interpretations

Main aim of photo shoot

The maim aim of this photoshoot was to interprete a photopraphers photographs. In this case i have looked at Jim Goldberg and interpreted his photographs he has taken.

Shutter speed range (secs) 1/15 - 1/1200

Aperture range(f numbers) 3.1 - 6.4

ISO 64 - 800

Date of photo shoot 21st February 2015

Light source Natural light

Photo shoot ideas So i wanted to not copy Jim Goldberg but use some of his ideas to produce my photographs. Jim Goldberg used the oppersites of rich and poor to produce some good photographers. Using an abandoned house and a high class man i looked at the relationship between the two. I wanted to create a photo shoot which used different angles. This for so that i could create photographs which look interesting and exciting rather then the usual mid shot. I could use high and low angles and long and close up shots which show variation in my photographs. I want to show the feeling and thoughts of the man in the photograph rather then the man writing his thoughts on a piece of paper. This will make the photograph more interesting to look at and to work out what the photograph is really about. I want to

Photo shoot evaluation I think that i have produced some good photographs which relate to the photographers photographs i have been looking at. I like that i picked a perfect day and time of day as it was sunny so the quality of the photographers are good. I used different angles which give a dramatic effect and makes them look more interesting and exciting. I like that i have a variety of photographs because i have used a number of different locations. I like that i have chosen different environments for my photographs because that they are not all in one place. I think that this shows more variation in my work that i have produced. I have taken photographs from different angles but i think that when doing my next photo shoot i could add more variation to make the shots even more of a better quality.

Photo Shoot Plan - Photo Shoot One

Main aim of photo shoot

The main aim of this photo shoot was to take photographs using my chosen theme of oppersites within the main theme of relationships.

Date of photo shoot 28th February 2015

Shutter speed range (secs) 1/15 - 1/30

Light source Nature light and artifical lamp

Aperture range(f numbers) 2.2

ISO 125 - 640

Photo shoot ideas My ideas for this photo shoot was to use some more interesting objects which relate to the theme of relationships. I want to show this but using opposite objects and colours. Firstly I would like to take photographs of shiny and dull pennies. I want to take up close photographs to really show the detail of the objects and the colours they show. These photographs will them covey two messages which would be to do with dull and shiny and colours. I then would like to take photographs of the opposites of water and fire. As a flame moves I would have to experiment with shutter speed which is a technique I haven’t used yet. I think that I could take some interesting and exciting photographs with them. Lastly I’m think of using chocolate to show opposites. If I was to use a milk chocolate and a white chocolate it would show the difference between the colours and show contrast.

Photo shoot evaluation I think that this photo shoot was successful because I have produced some photographs which look good visually. I created photographs which relate to my theme which is important. I have produced some high quality images using a good light source. I think to improve on the photographs I have taken looking at the theme I could use bigger objects or more interesting objects or environments. This would create more variety on my work and show different aspects relating to my theme of opposites/juxtaposition.

Main aim of photo shoot

The main aim of this photo shoot was to take photographs using my chosen theme of oppersites within the main theme of relationships.

Shutter speed range (secs) 1/200 - 1/1100

Aperture range(f numbers) 6.4

ISO 64

Date of photo shoot 1st March 2015

Light source Natural outdoor lighting Sunlight

Photo shoot ideas I want to explore the juxtaposition between an environment and an object/structure. I think that looking at a nature looking environement with a structure placed on it would show and relate to oppersites. This is because the beautiful nature environemnt is being destroyed by a big structure/building. I could explore long shots to show a larger picture as i have used many close ups in my photographs before. I want to find an interesting and appealing area to take my photographs are till will make my photographs look more exciting to view and look at.

Photo shoot evaluation I think that this photo shoot worked very well. This is because the lighting outside was very good as it was a bright and sunny day. The photographs have come out as high quality photographs which is very pleasing. I like the far away shoots that i have used because i havent used them in my work so far and it shows variety. I think that i could look at another aspect whithin oppersites when doing my next piece of work. I think that looking at people and their thoughts and then way they are oppersite would create a range of intersting set of photographs.

Photo Shoot Plan - Photo Shoot Three

Main aim of photo shoot

The main aim of this photo shoot was to take photographs using my chosen theme of oppersites within the main theme of relationships.

Shutter speed range (secs) 1/200 - 1/400

Aperture range(f numbers) 5.9 - 16.0

ISO 200 - 400

Date of photo shoot 5th March 2015

Light source Natural lighting Sunlight

Photo shoot ideas For this photoshoot i want to look at more object photograph and the difference between them. As the photo shoots i have completed before were inside i want to take the objects outside so that the lighting would be better. This is because natural lighting creates photographs with high quality. I want to look more into colour oppersites and two objects which are the same but show oppersites in some ways. I want to use a variety of different angles to create some interesting and exciting photographs.

Photo shoot evaluation I think that this photo shoot went well because i have produced some nice high quality photographs. The lighting outside was very good because it was a bright sunny day and the perfect day for a photoshoot. To improve my photographs further i think i need to look at a different ascept of oppersites using people to create some good photographs. Also using a variety of different angles will make the photographs more engaging to look at rather than the standard mid shot photograph.

Photo Shoot Plan - Reshoot 1

Main aim of photo shoot

Date of photo shoot 9th March 2015

The main aim of this photo shoot was to take photographs based on the photographs that i have already taken.

Shutter speed range (secs) 1/50 - 1/180

Aperture range(f numbers) 3.1 - 6.5

ISO 64 - 1000

Light source Natural lighting

Photo shoot ideas I want to use a person in this photoshoot to show the difference between the person and a sign. I would do this by having a person dressed in clothes which stereotypically show the class of the person. I will then have the person holding a sign which tells the person looking at the photograph what the person is feeling and the thoughts of the person. Doing this would show the oppersite between the person and the feelings or thoughts writton on the sign. I want to use different angles to show variation in my work. This will them make my photographs look more interesting and different.

Photo shoot evaluation I think that this photo shoot was very successful because it shows the relationship between the person and the object. By using a person it makes the photograph look more engaging and exciting to look at rather that two objects. I like that the photographs rely hidden messages within each of the photographs because it makes the photographs mopre interesting and people looking at the photograph would have to look closly and work out the messages it conveys. To make my photographs better i could take away the sign and use facal expressions to reply the hidden messages. Although this would make it harder to figure out what the photograph is trying to tell the person viewing the photograph, it would show more thought.

Date of photo shoot 9th February 2015

The main aim of this photo shoot was to take photographs

Shutter speed range (secs) 1/50 - 1/180

Aperture range(f numbers) 3.1 - 6.4

ISO 64 - 200

Light source Natural lighting

Photo shoot ideas I want to make this photo shoot more thoughtful and interesting when looking at the photographs. Instead of using a sign in my photographs i would like to use facial expressions against fashion to convey the messages. For example if i was to use a lady in expensive looking clothes but her facial expressions were unhappy it would show juxtaposition. want to use a range of angled shots when doing my photo shoot. This is because i want my photographs to look all different rather then all the same. I want to take the photographs on a sunny and bright day. This is because this lighting produces high quality photographs which then instantly look good.

Photo shoot evaluation I think the photo shoot that i completed when really well. Firstly this is because i used natual lighting so the photographs produced are to a high quality. Secondly i have used a range of different angles to show variety in my work. I like that i have shown the lady unhappy as it relates to the theme that i have been looking at within relationships. I think the photographs that i have taken will work well in my final format and create an inetersting and eye catching final piece.
