CHAMPIONSHIP PROFILE

The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is the world's premiere motocross race series. As the exclusive professional motocross program in the U.S. sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing (American Motorcyclist Association), the Series features the world's fastest motocross racers competing on the most renowned racetracks in the country. The 12-round Series begins mid-May in California, and continues throughout the summer with stops in Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Washington. Professional competition is divided into two classes: the 250 Class for 150-250cc machines and the premiere 450 Class for 251-450cc machines. The race format for each class consists of two 30-minutes plus two laps races (“motos”), with the results from each moto combined to determine the overall winner. Professional motocross competitions are conducted on natural terrain dirt courses that feature a variety of obstacles which include a unique blend of challenging jumps, steep uphills and downhills, bermed corners, fast straightaways and more. Motocross is recognized as one of the most physically demanding sports in the world, as well as the original extreme action sport. Since 2009, the Series has been under the management of MX Sports Pro Racing, a professional race organization based in West Virginia. Under the stewardship of MX Sports Pro Racing, the Series has experienced phenomenal growth and popularity, not only in television viewership, but live audience and social media awareness as well. All four motos are broadcast live on national television via NBC, NBC Sports Network and MAVTV, and streaming live on promotocross.com. Motocross fans are a unique breed of action sports consumer – edgy, energetic, enthusiastic and athletic. Motocross is a lifestyle sport, and for twelve weekends each summer, the best athletes on the planet compete on the roughest racetracks in the country, and millions of fans witness every second of the action, whether from along the fence line or from the comforts of home, via television or online.

MOTOCROSS 101 Motocross is exciting! Even if you're new to the sport, high-powered motorcycles piloted by world-class athletes on the planet's most demanding race tracks make for one of the most thrilling spectacles in professional sports. A little knowledge can greatly enhance the excitement factor, so here are answers to some of the most common motocross questions. WHAT IS THE RACE FORMAT? Each class races two times (motos), the results of which are combined to determine an overall winner. Each moto is 30 minutes in length plus an additional two laps for a total race time of approximately 35 minutes. Riders are awarded points based on their finishing position in each moto. Points are tallied after the second moto to determine an overall winner. In the event of a tie, the rider with the better second moto finish will be awarded the position. CLASSES Professional competition is divided into two classes: the 250 Class for 150-250cc machines, and the 450 Class for 251-450cc machines. The easiest distinction between each class is the respective number plates. The 450 Class features black numbers on a white background, while the 250 Class presents white numbers on a black background. In each class, a red number plate signifies the current points leader. HOW DOES A RACE GET STARTED? Before the start of each race, riders line up behind a metal starting gate that is secured to the ground. The gate drops toward the riders, and when it does, the race begins. Getting to the first turn before everyone else is referred to as “getting the holeshot.” If a rider takes off too early, his or her front wheel will get caught in the gate, costing valuable time. HOW LONG IS A RACE? In many forms of motorsports, competitors complete a predetermined number of laps. In motocross, racers compete for a set amount of time—30 minutes to be exact. Once that time is up, racers complete another two laps making the total race time approximately 35 minutes. Both classes run two races, known as motos.
