PROJECTS

MATH BUILDING EXPANSION

The existing mathematics building in the University of Arizona campus hosts a wide range of students with additional small departments such as linguistics. The goal of the project was to add an expansion to the existing building and make the experiences of mathematics students more inclusive while still preserving most of the existing building due to its historical relavance on the campus. The expansion was created to host more space for the existing small departments and more space for the mathematics department with an emphasis on open spaces and more research oppertunities.

The existing building in the University of Arizona campus is located in the southern core. It was derived from the physics building and was made to be an intersection of students on a more central portion of the science concourse. Overtime however, the surrounding buildings changed and so did the roads.

The existing building created a number of problematic areas such as connection to the second floor of the south wing. The decision to build vertically was a challenge but welcomed other ideas such as providing more open spaces for more natural daylight since daylight was very minimal in the existing building. The site also suff ered from poor circulation due to its changes over the years since the 1970s.

RIO LANGUAGE ACADEMY

Parques Del Rio in Medellin, Colombia required an urban approach to the goal of creating projects that integrated the public ground floors and connections to the city. The goal was to create a dense urban footprint that interacted well in the existing park with many programs such as a hotel, small housing, schools, and restaurants. In this case, the project was a language academy for Medellin.

Medellin continues to grow and so does its capacity to create more transit systems for the city in order to grow. The central transit points are shown here and how they interact with the city to help the public get to services such as schools and jobs. Parques Del Rio is located near the south area in El Poblado. Medellin has a very urban style that is also constantly growing and influencing transit.

The designs of each building had to be thought out as one whole project and connecting to each other. The river runs towards the east face of the entire project making it a unique experience for people to connect with the landscape as well. The location of the language academy sits along the west face that hosts the outdoor ampitheater as well.

The language academy prompted a solution that would create a public ground floor that would also provide a cafe for users of the park and create a welcoming building. The breezeblock facade creates modules that highlight each classroom and providing suff icient light and ventilation into the building. The roof level also gives back its space by providing a garden on the 5th floor for flexible uses.

HUNTRIDGE LIBRARY

The Huntridge was a famous theater from the mid 1940’s with a lot of history in the building. The goal for this project was to create an entirely diff erent building that still included some of the historical preservation of the site. The site itself was designed to be built in three stages; the library, housing, and retail areas. The goal of the project was to create more flexible spaces for the future possibilities of the library. The addition of current practices in the area were carefully considered and integrated rather than rejected. The ideas was for a more inclusive and comfortable environment.

Site and Existing Relation

One of the big design drivers was its relation to the mojave desert and embracing the land’s qualities as well to give the building a strong identity in the area of town. Features such as indoor plants and rocks were used to bring in the desert to the design. The other major criteria was incorporating the existing vendor culture that existed in the old parking lot. The idea was to also feature this in the site by providing a lot of space in the east-west direction between the library and housing. A public event space was also created to honor the original Huntridge into a building that all the public could use. The big Huntridge sign was to be preserved in this event space as well.

HENDERSON CITY HALL EXPANSION

Henderson City Hall is becoming a more public event destination for sports and other social gatherings. The off ice expansion was a primary source for providing visual interest to the site for events. The other big factor on the site is the Veteran’s Memorial which the city was looking to redesign. The idea to merge an off ice building and a memorial to provide visual interest was a challenge. Now visitors could experience the memorial in a deeper way unlike anything created on the site before.

Site and Memorial Connection

Located at the southern part of the city, the city hall is a major government building. The design of the off ice expansion on the northeast side of the building creates a few challenges. The sunlight had to be a part of the facade to ensure that the sunlight coming in is not too harsh. A meaningful connection from the memorial and the building had to be created. This was done by emphasizing the idea that due to the sacrifices of veterans, we are able to construct future buildings due to the freedom they protect. The memorial connects from the southern parking lot to the forest-like area, and then to the old ADA ramp that was revamped for a more ADA accessible memorial and experience. This created a powerful connection to the memorial to the off ice in a way that flows up.

Floor Plans/Ideation

On the ground floor, the ADA ramp is moved to a more meaningful area on the east. It flows into the off ice building facade and thus creates the whole system. Engraved hollow aluminum tubing contains the names of each and every Las Vegas veteran that passed away in the Vietnam war. On the interior, a circular-like path leads to each off ice and meeting room for the city hall building. The small addition did not require services such as restrooms because of their proximity to the city hall services. The grand stairs on the northeast mark the main entrance for guests coming in. Their attention is caught by the blue lights illuminating the facade/memorial all around the building.

SELECTED DRAWINGS+MODELS

A compilation of the many drawings and models made for conceptual ideas and finals throughout the undergrad and masters architecture program. These include models that were used to study the spatial configuration of the projects and their lighting conditions.
