State Bird

Western Meadowlark

Became the official state bird in 1927.

Wingspan of 16 inches.

The Western Meadowlark is also the state bird of Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wyoming.

These birds are recognized by their very distinct song call notes –songs are extremely load and “throaty”.

Weigh between 3 and 4 ounces.

Baby Western Meadowlarks begin to fly at 6 weeks.

Oregon Grape

There are six native species of the Oregon Grape plant that are widely distributed through Oregon.

Oregon Grapes can be used to make jams, jellies, and preserves.

Boiling the roots and inner bark produces a yellow dye commonly used on wool.

Berberisaquifolium – one of the 6 Oregon Grape species was designated the state flower in 1899.
