In a cave, near the city of Ekachakra, there lived a strong and cruel rakshasa named Bakasura. Every week the people of this city had to give the rakshasa meat, rice, curds and other kinds of food. The food was taken in a card drawn by two bullocks and driven a villager. The rakshasa would eat all the food, the bullocks and the human being too. The people of Ekachakra were greatly troubled by the rakshasa and lived in constant fear of him. Once the Pandavasa came to Ekachakra dressed like brahmanas to escape from Kauravas. They learnt about Bakasura and decided to free the people of this city from this cruel rakshasa. The next week, they decided to send Bheema, the strongest of all Pandavas, to the cave of Bakasura along with the flood. Fearless Bheema stropped the cart in front of the cave and began to eat the food meant for the rakshasa. Seeing this, Bakasura got very angry and pounced on Bheema. A great fight started between the two. But Bheema had superhuman powers. He lifted the mighty rakshasa over his shoulders and threw him down on the ground. All the bones of the rakshasa were broken and he was killed. The people of Ekachakra were delighted to be free of the rakshasa Bakasura. They expressed their sincere gratitude of Bheema. Questions:-

Like his brother Sampathi, Jatayu too was brave and noble. Lord Rama stayed in the forest with Sita and Lakshmana. One day when Rama and Lakshmana were away, Ravana came in the disguise of a Sanysi and kidnapped Sita. He took her in his Pushpaka Vimana. Sita cried for help. At that time Jatayu was sitting on a tall tree. He heard Sita calling out the names of ‘Rama’ and ‘Lakshmana’. Jatayu was a frind of Dasharatha, Rama’s father. He wanted to know who was uttering the names of his friend’s sons. When he saw Ravana taking away Sita, Jatayu at once began to fight with Ravana. Ravana was equipped with swords, arrows and other kinds of weapons. Besides, he knew magic. Jatayu, though strong, was only a bird. But Jatayu was not afraid. He knew that Ravana was on the wrong. Jatayu’s duty was to fight against injustice, and protect Sita from Ravana as Sita was now helpless. Jatayu attacked Ravana. Ravana first pushed Jatayu and attacked him with his hands. But Jatayu came again. He began to hurt Ravana with his fierce beak and slap him with his big wings. Ravana’s chariot was decorated with pearls and precious stones. When Jatayu smashed the Chariot the pearls scattered on the earth. Jatayu fought like a brave hero. At last, Ravana took his sword and cut the wings of Jatayu. For sometime, even without wings Jatayu attacked Ravana with the beak only. Finally he fell down on the earth, in a pool of blood. Ravana escaped. Rama and Lakshmana came in search of Sita. When they saw Jatayu, they were very sorry. Rama took Jatayu on his lap. The great bird was struggling for breath. He told Rama that a cruel man had taken away Sita in the South-West direction in broken words and died. Rama and Lakshmana performed his funeral rites and went in the direction Jatayu had shown.

elephant, “Gajaraja, I am a poor boy. Don’t harm me. My mother is alone, I must take money to her.” Gajaraja stood still. Bheemu thanked the elephant, took his bag and the bundle of wood and went home. The next day was Bheemu’s birthday. Kamalamma had prepared sweets. Bheemu took some sweets, went to the forest and waited for Gajaraja. When he came, Bheemu offered sweets, jaggery and other nice food to Gajaraja and said, “Oh! Great Gajaraja, please take these sweets and be a friend to me. Today is my birthday.” Gajaraja happily ate all the sweets and said “Bheemu dear, I am very happy today, because of the sweets and your friendship. Thank you. Now come with me.” Gajaraja helped Bheemu to climb upon him. Bheemu felt very happy and proud sitting on the back of the elephant. Bheemu and Gajaraja went into the deep forest. Then Gajaraja took Bheemu near a big tree. There was a wide hollow in the tree. Gajaraja took out fruits and other rare objects from that hallow, and gave them to Bheemu. Everyday, Bheemu would bring some nice food to Gajaraja, and Gajaraja supplied wood, fruits and flowers to Bheemu. By selling those things Bheemu earned enough money and became a shop owner. Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow: 1x6=06 Man’s dependence on animals and plants cannot be ignored. Animals are killed for meat and skin; trees are cut down for timber and paper; plants are uprooted for food and medicine. If we go on using nature as thoughtlessly as we have been doing, nothing worthwhile in nature will be left for our posterity. Against this background, many countries have passed protective laws in order to safeguard wildlife. There are more than 1,200 national parks, wildlife reserves
and similar protected areas throughout the world, to ensure that rare wild animals and precious trees are saved from extinction. One group of animals which have become extinct are dinosaurs. The record of the rock shows that they died out completely around a hundred million years ago. The reason for their extinction is not known. However, people guess that this is because of the change in environment. New mountains were born; the sea overflowed the land; the climate changed with the environment. The dinosaurs could not adapt themselves to the new environment and, as a result, perished. The saving of certain wild animals from extinction has for many years been a problem for zoologists and other specialists, but more recently the problem has become so acute, and has received so much publicity, that most people are now concerned about it. This may at first seem strange, because one of the most gratifying developments of the last few years has been the passing of strict laws to protect wild animals and the consequent decline in the hunting of the big game for sport. Why is it, then, that some rare wild animals are still threatened with extinction and even some of the less rare ones are rapidly declining in numbers? Questions:49. Why are animals killed? 50. Why are trees cut down? 51. What steps have some nations taken to protect wildlife? 52. ‘A person who studies about animals.’ Find out one word for this statement in the passage? 53. What do some people think is the reason for the extinction of dinosaurs? 54. What does ‘uproot’ mean, as used in the passage?

He had his schooling in King’s School, Grantham, where he studied Grammar and Latin. At first, he seemed to be rather a dull boy, and not very good at his lessons. But he liked to use his hands, and used to make little machines, such as wind-mills. He caught mice and compelled them to drive some of his little machine. One day at school, Newton was kicked by a bigger boy who was higher up in the class than he was himself. The kicking made Newton very angry and he turned on the bigger boy and gave him a good beating. He also decided to beat him at lessons, and this made him start to work harder. After that, he improved at his studies, and so perhaps the big boy who kicked Newton did a service to the world. Newton went to Cambridge University where he studied Mathematics and Science. He started to make discoveries in Mathematics while still at College. However, Newton did not confine his studies to Mathematics. He became very interested in the behaviour of light, and he showed that sunlight, which appears to us as white light, can be split up into the colours of the rainbow. One day, it is said, Newton watched an apple as it fell from a tree to the ground. He began to wonder why it moved towards the earth, and not upwards towards the sky. After a great deal of thought on this subject, he produced his theory of gravitation and published it in his great book ‘Principia’. He showed that every body attracts every other body. The sun and the earth attract each other, and so we do not fly away from the sun into the darkness and coldness of outer space; the moon and the earth also attract each other, which is why the moon stays near us and does not rush away, leaving us in darkness every night.
