'Most don't pursue research after PhD' Educational research should be based on development activities, and not on individual interest, said C N Nagaraju, former head of the department of educational research and policy planning at National Council of Educational Research and Training ( NCERT, New Delhi), here on Tuesday. Speaking at the inaugural of 'Trends in educational research', a refresher course in education organized by UGC Academic Staff College, University of Mysore (UoM), Nagaraju said that many individuals do research just to get a doctorate. "Many do not bother to pursue research after getting their PhD. Around 30-40% of research is being carried out on individual interest, and not for the welfare of society," he added. Citing opportunities available in research, he said that hundreds of private universities are creating a revolution in education. "Universities must concentrate more on research, and this is the need of the hour," he added. Speaking on its benefits, Nagaraju said that research works

submitted by scholars should give solutions for the problems in society. "They should generate policy to see that social justice is ensured," he said, urging researchers to take projects that contribute towards the nation. UoM registrar C Basavaraju said: "Even after six decades of Independence, India has not met social and cultural justice. It is possible only through research work." Researchers, he said, need to understand the topic they want to work on.

"Researchers today work to please their guide," he alleged. Speaking on quality of education, the registrar said that it depends on the quality of teaching. "Many institutions fail to provide quality education to their students," he felt. Basavaraju said that research work should be innovative enough to give ideas for the betterment of society. "A good research can transform society. Unless we have innovative ideas, we cannot contribute to society," he added.

DU students to study urbanization in five cities The fourth edition of an educational train journey by Delhi University students begins March 11 to study urbanization models in five cities, it was announced on Tuesday. The journey is undertaken every year. This year's theme is 'Urbanization Now and Then'. "The journey will assess the urbanization models of various Indian cities and the changes in the dynamics of governance," an official said. The students will go to Kanpur and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Surat and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. A university spokesman told IANS that the precise number of students who will travel is not known as of now. The tour ends March 19.

Hassled, schools wait and watch Nursery admission lotteries in the middle of exams are a major hassle. Some schools are waiting it out—there are still unanswered questions such as status of waitlist—while others are trying to get them over as soon as possible. Meanwhile, transfer category applicants are hitting back—they've finally taken the matter to court and argue that seats vacated by them will now go mainly to alumni and siblings still leaving 70pointers out of the game. That isn't the case, at least not at Tagore International School, East of Kailash, which will hold draws for 2,800 applicants who have 70 points, including those who'd originally got the five transfer ones. "We haven't yet decided on the date but we've displayed the list. Our school is not a centre for the CBSEs but we'll have to hold the draws on a day we don't have a home exam," says principal Suman Nath. "

Out of the blocks The class X and XII Central Board of Secondary Education ( CBSE) board examinations began on Saturday. Class XII students took their English exam. Students said the English paper was easy but too long and got barely five minutes to review what they had written. The questions were quite similar in all sets given to students. Students were pleased that the essay writing was on current topics, such as civic sense, cruelty to animal and tourism in India. The letter writing section entailed applying for a job. Varsha Iyer, a student of Divine Child International School, said: "The paper was easy but long. I didn't get much time to revise. The good part was that the essay writing was on a current topic. I expect to score around 90-92 marks." 12

Smart board operation overcomes big SSC glitch In what resembled a top secret military-style operation, the state board successfully salvaged a disaster situation in the ongoing SSC exams. Usually, the SSC question papers are sorted and packed at Pune according to number of candidates at individual centres and then delivered to the nine divisional board offices. However, faulty data entry by an outsourced private agency left the board without accurate statistics on candidates appearing in a majority of the centres in state. This led to the planning and execution of a massive hush-hush operation whose aim was to ensure SSC exams started without a hitch. Gangadhar Mhamane, chairman of state board said, "The success of the operation is a result of perfect coordination between every staff member. Divisional offices worked overtime to ensure nothing was left to chance and lakhs of students gave the exams without stress." The operation started about 10 days ago in Pune with question papers for exams dated March 3, 5 and 7 being first wrapped in bundles of 10, 50 and 100 each and then transported in bulk to divisional offices. The Nagpur divisional office at Civil Lines turned into a fortress with select staff closeted with these sensitive papers in locked rooms and tasked with sorting them as per exam centre requirements. SM Ganorkar, acting chairman of Nagpur divisional board, said, "We planned out the entire thing down to minutest detail. Tasks were handed out and timelines decided. We had to manually check data from schools and then allocate the number of question papers for each centre. Extra question papers, as usual, were added to each centre's allocation and wrapped up. A New Rage:

MBA after B.tech N

ow we have entered into a phase where very few engineering students want to continue with their stream because most of them wish to get into MBA. We all are aware of this fact that currently the highest amount of concentration of the world is on the youth of India. We should start our talk by being precise and should concentrate on the youth who are having an engineering background as their study or are pursuing engineering. There is a big bunch of youth who is in the engineering but the results come out to be that they not pursue it further. From a survey, this thing had become clear that there had become a trend to get into MBA after doing b. tech. The question that occurs in everyone’s mind is that why is this happening? Are the MBA’s really that good or are they providing a sense of entrepreneurial 14

adventure? Is this providing a sense of job security and opportunity or is it providing a better financial status after completion? I guess all those who join engineering have a wish of playing with robots, gadgets, engines and software. But the thing that happens is that they are just lifting books here and there rather than getting themselves involved in the machines. Rather than assembling engines they are just writing assignments. Most of the engineering students when asked that what they will be doing after B. tech, then the answer comes that they will be joining MBA and mainly the reason comes out to be that one in their known had followed the same procedure and now he/she is earning a package of nearly 17 to 25 lac per year. For the youngsters earning a handsome salary gives them three things and they are: • Getting respect among city’s young boys. • Appreciation from his family. • A direct key to woo his lover. If ever we happen to ask about the entire subjects from a B. tech student in the third year then he will not be able to come out with it,

but there on the other hand if you will ask the names of the coaching institutes present in the town than he will reply like a rocket. There is no mistake of the students, they are getting lured towards the MBA because of the under given reasons: • HIGHER SALARY:-The very first reason that attract the engineering students is the good salary that they get after getting into an MBA. Management field is the highest paid fields and that too in the less technical environment. In most of the cases freshers are paid quite high in the management fields as compared to the technical fields. Engineers who work in the technical field are earning quite less as compared to those who are working in the management fields. Moreover the work schedule in the technical field is quite tight as compared to the management field. • BETTER JOB OPPORTUNITIES:-In this era of globalisation and competition it is quite difficult to find out a job after having a degree in the engineering field. You are supposed to have something more to score out a good job in the same industry, like in other words you have to stand out of the crowd. How you overcome it is that all depends on you. • COMBINED FUNCTIONAL AND TECHNICAL PRESPECTIVES:-The fact that is prevailing in the society is that the engineers who do MBA proves out to be a better asset for the company. Engineers always think in a technical manner and an MBA will always think in a functional manner. Both the approaches are important for business development. Now if an engineer becomes capable of thinking in both the perspectives than definitely he can play an important role in the growth of the organisation and hence becomes a valuable asset for the company. • INTREST:-Of course it is a very big factor that drives a student towards the MBA. This thing is quite true that there are only a few engineers who do it by choice. Interest is their gravity that pulls them towards the MBA. We are not saying that to go for an MBA after B.

tech is something not acceptable, yes definitely it is good in concern about the status and job security. We have quoted out some underrated aspects of getting into an MBA. STOP AND REFLECT ON BIG BUSINESS ISSUES:-Taking an off for two years and sitting in a classroom just mugging up the notes seems to be a foolish act. How can one forget two years of salary and paying for the tuition fees? But the fact is that after completing these two years one is sure to get a great hike in the start-up salary package. It is an amazing luxury for those who are able to get out of the day to day grind and to sit and learn. But for those who cannot afford it seems to be of no use. So, just simply accept it and appreciate it. LIFE LONG FRIEND WITH GREAT CAREER IN BUSINESS:-This is the one best thing that most of the MBA talks about after several years down the memory lane. It is really a tough experience of getting into an MBA and making some good friends there. The friends that you get into the MBA are more than just good friends; they are likely to go with you all through your life. Moreover friends of these friends will prove out to be potential contacts for you in future. So try to meet as many friends as you can and keep your relationship maintained with them. UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD:-When you score a chance to get into a B-school you think that you are best of the best, but as soon as you start getting into its atmosphere than you start realising that there are many things that you have to learn yet. Even if you were in the top in your schools, were doing great in the college and even we have a handsome job before entering into a B-school where you were pulling out big bucks, the chance still stands that you can turn to be an idiot. It is not at all your fault; it is just that you still have to learn out many things about the business world. LEARN TO GET A BUNCH OF HIGH STRUNG:In most of the big B-schools these days you will find many international students surrounding you. Moreover some schools also use their international student body as a competitive rage against other schools. It is really important of getting out of your little perspective, you have also to think that there are Chinese, Russians, Swedes as well who are dying to get back to their homeland and also to eat your lunch. You should better realize that there is a big world out and you should figure out how making some profit from being sustainable. INTREACT WITH CHALLENGING PROFESSORS:-If you want to succeed in your career then the very first thing that you need to do is to nurture out at least a couple of good mentor relationships. In these schools you will probably get a plenty of professors who will stretch out your thinking.

Soon, Delhi-Taj drive without entering Agra

n two years, tourists from Delhi and Kanpur will be drive to the Taj Mahal from the Yamuna Expressway without entering the congested Agra city. This will be made possible by the Rs. 306 crore inner city Ring Road that will connect the Yamuna Expressway with Fatehabad tourism complex near the Taj Mahal, the foundation stone of which Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav laid Monday evening, along with that for a long-pending Rs. 108 crore Taj Ganj beautification project. Agra Development Authority (ADA) secretary Ravindra Kumar said the Jaipur company which got the contract for the Ring Road began work after the "bhoomi pujan". The work will be completed in two years. In the first phase the 10.9 km elevated stretch will have six lanes. Two more lanes will be subsequently added. New hubs of activity will develop on either side of the Yamuna Expressway.

The Agra-Lucknow Expressway project cleared by the state government will further help connectivity, as the two roads will meet at Kuberpur in Agra's Etmadpur tehsil. After the Yamuna Expressway, a project of the previous Mayawati government, became operational in August 2012, demands were being made by the local tourism industry to connect the Expressway with the Fatehabad road across the Yamuna, in close proximity to the 17th century Taj Mahal. Currently, vehicles coming to Agra from Delhi-Noida via the Expressway have to enter the city and waste precious hours in negotiating traffic to reach the Taj Mahal. The Taj Ganj beautification project

will be a big boost to tourism as the entire area around the Taj Mahal will be spruced and the amenities for tourists streamlined. "There will be parks, landscapping, new toilets, better roads, lighting, underground cables, shelters, activity zones, covered drains, a golf course, medical facilities and a whole lot of smaller projects that would help tourists spend more time around the Taj Mahal," an ADA official said.

Along with white sandy beaches and a mangrove swamp, the area is also home to a unique natural phenomenon, the Great Blue Hole, a circular, underwater limestone sinkhole that measures 300 feet across (91m) and 400 feet deep (124m) deep. The seemingly bottomless pit is home to underwater species like blacktip tiger and hammerhead sharks. Other sightings include angelfish, neon gobies, butterfly fish, and small groupers. South African safari: more than the ‘big five’

we can’t save our iconic animals, what chance do the other species have? It is this question, posed during breakfast by Dr William Fowlds — an affable wildlife veterinarian living in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, that I take with me on the first game drive of the day at the Amakhala Game Reserve (AGR), near Port Elizabeth. He is talking about the two-horned white and black rhino population in the rainbow nation, that could face possible extinction due to intense poaching for their horns. My thoughts are with the big cats back home in India — their numbers pegged at 1706 in the 2010 tiger census. The plan had been simple that morning. Get a glimpse of the ‘big five’

Spread over approximately 18,000 acres, the reserve is home to some endangered species and many not-so-famous ones as well, including the kudu and black wildebeest. As you explore the bush, you realise that at a game reserve, there’s usually more going on behind-the-scenes than in the open. Although poaching must be on top-of-mind, there are fences to mend, rangers to train, roads, rooms and vehicles to maintain, animals to monitor, new species to introduce and births and

deaths to record while maintaining a tranquil front for the tourists. Also, for those who like to get their hands dirty, there’s a volunteer programme with activities like predator monitoring, waterhole surveys and animal identification. On that day, Dr Fowlds and Tracy Weeks, co-owner of AGR, are looking to move a male giraffe to another part of the reserve where a couple of females need company. Culling, capturing, moving and reintroducing species are essential parts of game reserve maintenance. They don’t always go right and may not make for great pictures. "So the debate goes on, on how much we want the visitors to see?” says Weeks.

The changes square measure extensive: The SAT's rarefied vocabulary challenges are replaced by words that square measure common in faculty courses, like "empirical" and "synthesis." The arithmetic queries, currently scattered across several topics, can focus additional narrowly on linear equations, functions and proportional thinking. the employment of a calculator can now not be allowed on a number of the arithmetic sections. The new communication are out there on paper and laptop, and therefore the evaluation can revert to the recent one,600-point scale — from a pair of,400 — with prime a lot of 800 on

Once the pre-eminent faculty admissions communication, the weekday has lost ground to the ACT, that relies additional directly on highschool curriculums and is currently taken by a rather higher variety of scholars. Last year, 1.8 million students took the ACT and one.7 million the weekday. The new weekday won't quell all criticism of standardized tests. Critics have long distinguished — and Coleman admits — that top college grades square measure a more robust predictor of faculty success than standardized take a look at scores. additional faculties have in recent years become "test optional ," permitting students to forgo the exams and submit their grades, transcripts and maybe a hierarchical paper. For many students, Coleman aforesaid, the tests square measure mysterious and "filled with unproductive anxiety." ncryption technology is set to take a leap in Kolkata with a dedicated research centre at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). Home of code language research for more than a decade, ISI will soon host the RC Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security. To be set up at a cost of Rs 115 crore and funded by the central government, it will conduct research on developing encrypted data transfer, primarily for defence and finance. ISI already has a cryptology research group (CRG) that has been working on encrypting classified data for transmission. With the research centre, ISI will make a foray into the practical aspects of cryptology. So far, it has only been working on the theoretical part. "Our primary job has been to develop theories and pass them on to the agencies for which we have been working. But once we have a research centre, we must also

delve into the practical part. In terms of theoretical research, it will be an extension of CRG activities that we have been involved in since 2000. The ambit and nature of research will, of course, be far more extensive," said Rana Barua, professor, statistics and mathematics unit and a member of CRG. The research centre will also run cryptograph courses. It could offer a diploma or a degree course on cryptology. "We need more researchers and trained people to carry on the job. Courses are the obvious way of having more trained hands," said Barua. The research centre will have 15 to 20 research scholars, post-doctoral students and visiting professors. Many from the CRG will be joining the centre. "It will be a centre of excellence that will encourage independent research. Funds have been sanctioned and we are waiting for the money to arrive," said

Bimal Roy, director, ISI. He added that the centre will not restrict itself merely to theoretical research. "In the long run, we must look into the possibility of exploring the practical part. It will be a comprehensive research unit," said Roy. ISI initiated research on cryptology in 2000. It has been holding a cryptology conference every year since then. The institute has developed indigenous cryptology codes for defence and finance that have often been used. Even though government agencies also use commercially available encryption, they are not considered fully safe. "It can be decoded by the company providing it. So, commercial encryption is not trusted. Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) uses its own encryption techniques. We have been in the fray for seven or eight years," said an ISI official. The centre will be set up on an ISI-owned plot on BT Road, a few kilometres from the main campus.

As a whole, people can bring about development only when they know where improvement is necessary for the greater good of mankind. Education helps you understand yourself better, it helps you realize your potential and qualities as a human being. It helps you to tap into latent talent, so that you may be able to sharpen your skills. Financial Stability and Dignity of Life Another importance of education is that it helps you gain sufďŹ cient academic qualiďŹ cation so that you are able to get suitable employment at a later stage. A decent employment would be combined with hard-earned remuneration or salary through which you can look after your personal expenses. While you earn for yourself, you gradually begin to realize the true worth of money and how hard it is to earn it. You realize the significance of saving for a rainy day and for unforeseeable contingencies. You feel empowered because there is a new sense of worth that develops within you, and you feel the need to be independent and free from any further financial support. You take pride in the fact that you are earning for yourself, and are not obligated to anyone. Growth in Personal Aspiration There also comes a phase when the amount you are earning presently will seem inadequate because your aspirations and expectations from yourself would have grown considerably. After this, you will want to change jobs so as to have a higher profile. However, here is when you need to be prepared. A promotion of this figure can occur in two given situations, which are, that either you have the necessary higher academic qualification

or a college degree which allows you a safe passage, or that you have amassed enough practical experience which allows you to be a suitable candidate for the employment you seek. On the Job Efficiency This is why college education is very important after high school and must not be taken for granted. When faced with the option of choosing between a highly qualified candidate and a not so educated candidate, the employers will most probably go in for the qualified person. The reason being that, a qualified candidate will not require much investment of the employer's time and money. The organization need not teach him or her the tricks of the trade, or the various ways of functioning and performing the tasks of the workplace. On the contrary, a novice / amateur applicant would need to be taught everything from scratch, which many employer's are usually not willing to do. The same applies for people who seek higher education and get advanced diplomas while working. These people are continuously improving their profile and their knowledge base so as to go higher up on the competitive ladder. Helps Plan Ahead Those who have amassed enough education, steer the path of development and progress for their country. It is these individuals who go ahead and become teachers, scientists, inventors, welfare activists, soldiers, and politicians who work together to form the very backbone of the society. Without this pool of intellect, the economic and social framework would crumple and fall, paving its way for anarchy, degradation, and violence. While this intricate balance of growth is maintained, there will be a continuous rise in progress in all quarters of life, whether that be personal growth, or development of the nation as an entity. This progress has a very important role to play for the coming generations, which will reap the benefits of our hard work, as they develop it further. At the same time, the negative impact of our actions shall have its collateral damage on the coming generation as well. Which is why we must be exceptionally prudent about the decisions we make and the actions we take in the present.

Job Seeker vs. Job Provider There will come a time, when you will no longer feel the need to be working as someone's mere employee. You would want to take charge and control over your own life and income. This is when you will decide to become a self-employed individual, who would like to watch his / her own ideas take realistic form. You would prefer being the one offering job opportunities to others and aid in providing income to them. At this stage of entrepreneurship, you may use your own expertise as well as that of other trained and skilled associates. As a team, you will find your business or venture expanding and yielding good results. You may even gain the confidence and insight, which will help you diversify and spread your expertise into other business arenas, which were previously unknown to you, or you were unsure about. This ability, comes with experience and knowledge amassed over the years. An Idle Mind is The Devil's Workshop Education and studying regularly, gives people of all age groups something substantial and challenging to do. It helps them think and use their idle hours, doing something productive and worthwhile. Education need not be purely academic and may include reading for leisure or as a passion for literature, philosophy, art, politics, economics, or even scientific research. There is no limit, to all that you can teach yourself, only if you take the interest to learn and grow as an individual. However, those who treat knowledge as trash, eventually find themselves getting absorbed with thoughts of violence, and jealously against those who are better off than themselves. It is people such as these who turn towards drug addiction, unnecessary rebellion, crime, and plain inactivity. Such people lack the selfesteem, that a good education often provides to its followers. Education plays its continuous role in all spheres of life. The reason being, that if we are aware of the drawbacks of a decision and we know about the possible contingencies and the collateral damage, our consequent actions would be wiser, which would help us to keep danger at bay at all times.

Case Competition for India based cases. Co-hosted with ISB since 2010, the competition has rapidly gained prominence in India and abroad. Ivey has also so far trained over 720 Indian faculty in case teaching and writing through numerous workshops organized in partnership with Indian business schools such as ISB, IIM-B, MDI, IMI, IIT-B, SPJIMR to name a few. IIM Calcutta is one of the premier business schools in India, and is globally recognized as a leader in business education. The Case Research Centre (IIMCCRC) was started in 2012 to champion the cause of participative case based learning in Business Schools and other institutions in India by creating a repository of teaching cases with an Indian context, spreading awareness on the value of the Case Method, and propagating practice standards for development and use of cases in management education.
