NEW Middle Grades degree program provides you with the knowledge, skills, and sensibilities to lead, inspire, and teach students in grades 5-8. Our program features: • Multiple field experiences in a variety of school settings • Opportunities for team and interdisciplinary teaching • Specific content knowledge: Literacy, Social Sciences, Math, or Science • The ability to obtain more than one concentration/endorsement • Study and teach abroad opportunities • Flexibility in course requirements for concentrations • Foundation courses in cognitive and social development; the history and nature of schools; identity within communities; social justice understandings; and responsive pedagogy to cultural and linguistic differences
Our program is aligned with ISBE standards and principles outlined by the Association for Middle Level Education

Instructional methods: CI 410 General methods for teaching at the middle grades level
CI 467, CI 471, and CI 476 gain important literacy knowledge CI 402 (English, Math, Social Studies, or Science) methods to apply content to specific subject areas CI 404 professionalism, assessment and successfully completing the EdTPA required for licensure
Field experiences: Practicum Experiences: Understanding children and youth in their diverse educational settings Early Field: Weekly participant observations in grades 5-8 Placement with a collaborative team of middle school teachers with opportunities to teach and observe in more than one content area Student Teaching: Local and northern placements in schools
