The conference is free to attend for teachers of any subject in their training year or ECT years. Some comments from attendees at our second conference last year: “The day was wonderful. The sessions were insightful and incredibly motivating. I am more aware of my body language, using different behaviour strategies and was inspired by Patricia’s talk.” “I also have been inspired by a teacher at Benenden. Huge thank you as she’s helped answer some questions which I felt scared to ask in my school.” “I really enjoyed the day at Benenden I thought all of us were really welcomed and looked after, I would definitely recommend the day for any trainee teachers!” “An incredibly informative day overall with a wide range of expert speakers to ensure continued development for the next generation of teachers!”

Speaker Biographies Professor Patricia Riddell

Mike Carter

Patricia Riddell is Professor of Applied Neuroscience and a chartered psychologist. She studied Physiological Sciences at University of Glasgow and obtained a Masters’ degree in Quantitative Methods Applied to Physiology from Imperial College before completing a doctorate in Physiological Sciences at the University of Oxford.

Mike Carter is a highly respected body language consultant and is widely regarded as one of the UK’s foremost body language experts and vocal coaches. He is constantly in demand to run body language training sessions for schools, colleges and universities. As well as running body language workshops, he has appeared on numerous television and radio shows and has written a number of body language training manuals. When newspapers, magazines, TV stations and radio shows require in-depth analysis of celebrities, members of the Royal Family and politicians, Mike is – more often than not – the one they turn to!

She is passionate about sharing the expanding knowledge that we have about the brain and how it drives behaviour to professionals generally. She believes teachers, coaches, trainers, leaders – but also parents and children – can gain huge benefits from knowing how the brain works and how we can behave more effectively using this knowledge. She has recently designed and delivered a highly successful series of workshops on Neuroscience for Teachers which aims to educate teachers in the ways that neuroscience can be applied in the classroom.

The main aims of Mike’s training sessions for teachers and senior leaders are:

Understanding and Harnessing the Power of Body Language

to increase the general awareness of the power of body language and therefore enable teachers to perform to much higher standards both in and out of the classroom;

to learn how to manage and dilute potentially confrontational situations with students, colleagues and parents by adopting specific body language techniques;

to learn how to interpret the body language of others and identify children who are vulnerable, suffering, and underachieving;

to understand more about the voice, and learn how to use speech efficiently and effectively.
