EducationUSA Romania: February 2012 Highlights Fulbright Educational Advising Center (FEAC)
U.S. Study Makes New Friends: Students at Top High Schools in Bucharest Won Over by the EducationUSA Approach February closes on a very positive note for the Fulbright Educational Advising Center, with our comprehensive national 2012 outreach campaign successfully debuted this month and hailing months of intense outreach activity ahead. This month, we visited three high schools in Bucharest – Lazar, IL Caragiale and Central School. On two visits we were accompanied by a U.S. university rep. In addition, on behalf of EducationUSA we offered an interactive presentation U.S. study at the World Education Fair, for which we managed to negotiate free-of-charge participation. The sessions reached over 300 students and teachers. They centered on a range of topics including “Liberal Arts Education and Students’ Development”, “U.S. Undergraduate Study: Quality. Diversity. Financial aid”, and “University Rankings: Why the U.S. Tops the Charts”. The participants were thrilled to learn about a range of appealing features of U.S. campuses: liberal arts education, the personalized curriculum, hands-on learning, the comprehensive support system, etc., as well as the significant financial aid available for international students. Inspiring Romanian success stories together with information on the free online and face-to-face support provided by our EducationUSA Advising Center wrapped up the events. We also planned a DVC to be held at the U.S. Embassy for visitors of the American Corners in Baia Mare, Craiova and Cluj, but due to the heavy snowfall, the event was postponed, despite attracting dozens of interested students at each Corner.
Enriching Online Advising for Underserved Audiences: New FEAC eNewsletters Starting this month, FEAC launched two new eNewsletters featuring comprehensive information on online seminars and training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate applicants to U.S. universities, respectively. They can be accessed in the Services section on the FEAC site at http://www.fulbright.ro/educational-advising-center/39-about-feac/49services.html. Every month, the eNewsletters will highlight upcoming FEAC and EducationUSA webinars, digital video conferences, virtual fairs, as well as other online resources and events inspired, offered or organized by EducationUSA to promote U.S. study. The February issues have been circulated to the network of FEAC contacts in high schools, universities and American Corners across Romania. The American Corner in Bacau has made the information available on their website and in the local media.

EducationUSA Romania: February 2012 Highlights Fulbright Educational Advising Center (FEAC) “International Study Day”: A New Outreach Concept Inspired by the productive experience of the Fulbright Commission in Finland, our advising center has approached Campus France, DAAD and British Council to set up joint outreach programs meant to attract increased visibility to the educational system we each represent. The pilot program will be launched on April 4 at a top high school in Bucharest and will start traveling to underserved academic communities in the country at the end of April. The project pools financial resources, contacts and expertise: in appreciation of the Fulbright concept of joint outreach, DAAD, Campus France and the British Council will cover the design and printing costs for 8000 fliers, 100 posters and 4 rollups. At this point FEAC is exploring opportunities for setting up a dedicated Intl Study Day website by means of FEAC intern expertise. FEAC to Present Romanian Advising Expertise at OACAC Conference The session proposal initiated by FEAC on “Attracting the Stars of Eastern Europe to U.S. Campuses” has been accepted by the OACAC Annual Conference bringing together experts on undergraduate advising and admissions to University of Denver, CO. The FEAC session which will involve a College Board representative and the admissions director at Wellesley College is one of the 62 proposals accepted out of the 117 submissions. As such, the advising center in Bucharest will represent EducationUSA Europe at the event. U.S. Study to Enjoy Exceptional Visibility at the Romanian International University Fair/RIUF, Spring Edition 2012 Thanks to the time-honored partnerships FEAC has developed with the organizers of RIUF, the foremost educational fair in south-east Europe, the Fulbright Commission will have one more time a free premium stand at the event in Bucharest and two free one-hour presentations on March 17-18. In addition, the U.S. Embassy grant for promotion of U.S. study will allow the advising center to produce some promotional materials that will further increase the appeal of the booth and the overall impact of the U.S. presence at the fair.
