LEEWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS Located in Pearl City, Hawaii, Leeward Community College is a regional community center, creating both an environment for academic learning and a center of cultural life. From professional career studies to liberal arts, the College offers diverse and comprehensive opportunities for all students. As part of the University of Hawai‘i system, they are dedicated and responsive to the community, providing an open door to the world of educational opportunities. Leeward Community College is offering scholarships to new incoming international freshmen. The scholarship award is $3,000 per year and is renewable for a second year based on continuing eligibility. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.2 and scholarship applications must be accompanied by Leeward admission application. HIRAM COLLEGE MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS Hiram is a coeducational liberal arts college of 1,300 students located in the historic Western Reserve region of Ohio. Hiram is a nationally respected institution that offers students a distinct learning environment with an emphasis on close studentfaculty interactions, international study experiences, and experiential learning environments. Hiram College offers merit-based scholarships to international applicants. For on-campus residents, scholarships range up to a maximum of $21,000 per year. For commuter students, they range up to a maximum of $16,000 per year. Scholarships are renewable annually for up to four years of study. To receive full consideration, a completed application for admission should be received no later than February 15 for the fall intake and no later than October 1 for the spring intake. OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY PROVOST INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS Oregon State University welcomes a diverse student body of nearly 25,000 students from across Oregon, all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Students choose from over 200 undergraduate and 80 graduate degree programs, including 20 full online degrees. Oregon State University increasingly attracts high-achieving students, with nationally recognized programs in areas such as conservation biology, agricultural sciences, nuclear engineering, forestry, fisheries and wildlife management, community health, pharmacy and zoology. Oregon State University is offering The Provost International Scholarship to exceptional international first-year and transfer students. Award amounts vary and are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study with specific renewal requirements to be met by recipients. Minimum eligibility requirements at the time of application for non-resident freshman is a 3.75 GPA or 1800+ SAT/26 to 28 ACT and transfer students must have a 3.75 GPA and 36 or more college credit hours. GEORGIA COLLEGE MERIT-AND NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS Georgia College offers numerous programs of study to talented and motivated students in a residential college setting. Its academically engaging, student-centered programs often take learning beyond the traditional classroom and develop the intellectual, professional, and civic skills and dispositions that enable graduates to thrive in an information-intensive and diverse global society. Georgia College offers international student scholarships to students based upon extracurricular involvement, academic excellence and financial need. This award grants either a half waiver or full waiver for out-of-state tuition fees and ranges in the amount of amount $20,000 to $40,000 over the course of four years. Full time undergraduate students who will pursue their degree at Georgia College & State University are eligible to apply for this scholarship. ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY DAVID MCHUGH SCHOLARSHIPS FOR EXERCISE SCIENCE AND RELATED STUDIES Arizona State University (ASU) is a public research university located in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area of Arizona. Since 2003, ASU has increased the number of high-level faculty members and experts on campus with the addition of 156 new award recipients, fellows or academy members. ASU’s mission is to pursue research and discovery that benefits the public good; assuming major responsibility for the economic, social, and cultural vitality and health and well-being of the community. Arizona State University is offering the David McHugh Scholarship for Exercise Science and Related Studies. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be admitted and enrolled as full� time students and majoring in any of the following fields: Applied Science (Wellness), Cardiac Rehabilitation, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Exercise and Wellness, Exercise and Wellness (Health Promotion), Nutrition. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative academic GPA, show involvement in community and/or school activities and demonstrate the potential to continue with their college career by remaining in good standing with the university and maintain all scholarship criteria. KELLOGG INSTITUTE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES FELLOWSHIPS The Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies brings the best of interdisciplinary inquiry to bear on research themes relevant to contemporary societies around the world, especially democracy and human development. Drawing faculty fellows from across the University, students, and visiting scholars, the Institute promotes research, provides exceptional educational opportunities for students, and builds linkages to support the University’s strategic goals on internationalization. The Kellogg Institute creates a space where those interested in international affairs can engage—with one another and with issues crucial to human society. Known for its regional focus on Latin America, the Institute has in recent years widened its scope to include Africa, Asia, and beyond. The Kellogg institute is offering fellowships to scholars and practitioners who conduct international research on themes of democracy and/or human development. Applicants may come from any country and typically fall into three groups: promising junior and midcareer scholars (typically postdocs and assistant or associate professors), distinguished senior scholars with an established record of scholarly excellence, accomplished policy makers, journalists, and other practitioners whose knowledge and experience can link policy and scholarship. Fellowship includes a stipend, travel expenses, medical insurance benefits, partial housing subsidy and up to $1,500 of conference travel support for recipients of one and two-year fellowships. NORTHWESTERN MICHIGAN COLLEGE GOES GLOBAL Northwestern Michigan College President, Timothy J. Nelson, has announced an on-going fundraiser called the Global Opportunities Fund to ensure their students are prepared for success in a global economy and society. Over the next two years the fund will assist NMC in student scholarships, establishing a residency program to host global experts, financing faculty trips abroad to develop partnerships with international institutions, and funding internships for international students jointly with businesses in the Grand Traverse region. "The growth and change that takes place in developing countries will have a profound effect on the lives of students' in the future," remarked NMC's Dennos Museum Director, Eugene Jenneman. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN STAGECRAFT INSTITUTE PROGRAM Agnes Nakakawa, a 32-year-old mother and sound designer from Uganda, believes there is a way, through theater, to help her people. In June, she came to Stagecraft Institute in Las Vegas, a nonprofit, hoping to gain inspiration and information, two things she can immediately share with her people. Nakakawa was one of 25 students from around the world enrolled in an intensive eight-week local theater program that teaches every aspect of backstage theater. REGIS COLLEGE STUDENTS RECEIVE IPADS All students and faculty at Regis College in Weston, Mass., will get iPads when the fall semester begins, the latest in a growing number of educational institutions to take the digital leap to tablets. “It’s very engaging to have multimedia capabilities in the classroom,” said Marla Botelho, chief information officer at Regis. “People learn in different ways.” Though the iPad will not entirely replace textbooks, that’s the direction the college plans to go in, Botelho said. Andrea Humphry, a professor of English at Regis, plans to use the iPads to conduct instant surveys of her class with a group polling app called eClicker. “It’s a way of employing more of their senses at once,” she said. GETTING INTO MEDICAL SCHOOL AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT Promise, a Nigerian freshman biology major studying at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, blogs about the hurdles awaiting him when the time comes to apply to medical school in the United States. From the right test scores and grades to beyond grades, he writes about his medical school application concerns. “In all my meetings with these people, there has been one thing each of them emphasized: hard work. They said I will have to work twice as hard as an American applicant to get into medical school. I don’t doubt that. HOWARD HUGHES MEDICAL INSTITUTE OPENS DOORS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has awarded more than $2 million in fellowships to 50 promising graduate students from 19 countries. The fellowships are designed to fund the students’ graduate education at a pivotal point in their scientific careers - a sink or swim time when they delve into intense laboratory research for their doctoral dissertations.
