The benefits of high school exchange What is an exchange year? An exchange year means that you spend a semester, trimester or year studying at a high school abroad. Depending on the program you choose, you can live with a host family or on campus at a boarding school. You participate in classes just like a regular teenager in your host country, and often, you can choose subjects that align with your personal and academic interests. You can also join extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, and dance.
Why Take an Exchange Year? Based on our experiences and what our students tell us, we know that going on exchange is a life-changing experience that equips you with all the tools to succeed in the future.
Benefits of going an exchange year • You gain self-confidence and independence, learning to adapt and overcome challenges even when far from home. • You boost your future academic and career prospects. By year-end, you'll speak the new language fluently, sharpen problem-solving and communication skills, and develop a global perspective.

Opportunities through education - Aiducatius Projects in Tanzania With education, children in vulnerable situations can acquire the skills and knowledge they need for academic development and employment. Through education, children are equipped with the necessary tools to influence their lives and create a successful future for themselves and their families. Aiducatius was founded by Tom and Anna-Karin Ericsson in 2009. As Educatius Group founders, they deeply understand the significance of education and the need for access to schooling in developing nations.
In 2014, the Tanzanian government introduced a policy of feefree education, making primary education free. However, this policy does not cover education for children and youth with special needs. The Gabriella Center, located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, has been providing rehabilitation services for children with autism, cognitive learning disabilities, and other neurological developmental issues since 2009. Their aim is to help ensure that students become independent and productive members of their families and communities.
“We believe education is for everyone”. – Tom Ericsson
By funding special education teachers, Aiducatius contributes to enabling more unique children, youth, and their families from all over Tanzania to access the services of the Gabriella Rehabilitation Centers.
Projects in The Gambia
Tree planting and conservation projects
As per The Gambia's constitution, basic education is a right, meant to be free, compulsory, and accessible to all. However, there's a mandatory cost linked to children's schooling in The Gambia. Aiducatius backs students at St. Martin Basic Cycle School, supplying books, materials, uniforms, bags, shoes, and exam fees.
The environment is changing, and we all have a responsibility to do what we can. To offset the travel of Educatius Group students and staff each year, Aiducatius supports tree planting and conservation efforts in the Biharamulo district of Tanzania. Aiducatius is involved in various projects, including reforestation of natural forests, restoration of water sources, and management of planted forests.

Your path with Educatius 1. Requirements Before you can start the application process, you should check if you meet all the requirements for a school year abroad: Are you between 14 and 18 years old (in some cases, 13 or 19), and a student at a school in Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden? Are your school grades in the good to sufficient range? Are you tolerant, motivated, and open to new situations? Great! Then there's nothing standing in the way of your year abroad with Educatius.
2. The first contact Send us your non-binding inquiry through your local Educatius website. In the next few days, one of our educational consultants will arrange a counseling session with you and at least one legal guardians. This session will take place online and will last approximately 30 minutes. We would also be delighted to welcome you and your guardians into any of our Educatius offices. The consultation is, of course, free of charge and entirely non-binding.
4. Program confirmation Only after you and your guardians have signed contract with Educatius you have secured your spot. You will now be provided with all the documents for the program or school you have chosen. Of course, we are here to assist you in filling them out.
5. Preparation meeting During the pre-departure meeting, you will be prepared for your adventure abroad along with other participants. Our preparation meetings are divided by destination countries. Here, you'll meet Educatius staff, other exchange students, and former participants who will answer all your questions. You'll learn about life and daily school routines in your host country and discover the cultural specifics you can expect. We'll also provide practical examples of how to handle challenging situations in your host country. Our preparation meetings are held online.
3. Consultation It is important to us that you feel well-advised and supported right from the start. During the consultation, we want to learn everything about your expectations and ideas in order to find the right high school program for you. Of course, we will also answer any questions you or your parents may have regarding your stay, your host country, and Educatius. After the meeting, we will get back to you shortly and send you a written offer, the pre-confirmation.
20 High School – Your Path
6. Passport and visa Before you travel, you need to make sure you have a valid passport. (identity card is sufficient in some European countries). If you don't have a passport yet, make sure to apply for one in advance, as the processing can take several weeks. For a stay in a non-European country, you will need a student visa. Each country has specific regulations for this, which we will explain to you in detail.
7. H ost family search and placement Based on your application documents, which we forward to our partner organization in the host country, they search for a suitable host family for you. Once a family has chosen you, we will notify you immediately and provide you with all the necessary information. FAQ Who can go abroad with Educatius?
Are host families paid?
To travel with Educatius, you must be between 14 and 18 years old (in some exceptional cases, 13 or 19 years is possible) and still attending school. Additionally, your school grades must fall within a certain range, and you must meet specific health requirements.
It depends on your program. In the UK, Ireland, and Spain, we work with paid host families due to specific country regulations.
How early should I apply? We accept applications throughout the year but recommend applying as early as possible. Applying early provides you with ample preparation time.
What does a host family look like? Every host family is unique. What they all have in common is their interest in cultural exchange and sharing their life with you.
Why do families host exchange students? Many of the reasons are the same as yours. They get to know a new culture, broaden their horizons, and have a unique experience. Some families have children who have participated in exchange programs, and others have hosted exchange students many times. Our staff does their best to introduce our students to host families based on their profiles and applications. However, ultimately, each family decides which student they wish to host. Host families often make their choice based on your interests and the initial impression from your application, so it's essential to describe yourself honestly and accurately.
22 High School – FAQ
Host families in the Select Program also receive compensation for hosting. If you are traveling in the Select Program and choose your future school, we offer compensation to ensure that a suitable host family is found near your school.
How are host families vetted? All our families go through a thorough application process. Our colleagues in the host country visit the family's home, obtain criminal background checks, and interview every family member to ensure they meet our standards.
Do I have to share a room? It's possible that there may not be another exchange student in the family besides you. You will always have your own bed, but you may share a room in the following situations: • In some families, you may share a room with the host family's son or daughter, but always with someone of the same gender. • In some families, you may share a room with another exchange student of a different nationality and who speaks a different native language. In some countries, you can choose a single room for an additional fee. Feel free to ask us about this.

Can I be placed with a friend? Unfortunately, you cannot be placed with a friend at the same host family as it would hinder your immersion into family life, culture, and language. However, there is a solution: if you want to travel and live with a friend, you can choose our boarding school program or the Select Program. In the Select Program, where you choose your school, you will, at the very least, live in the same area.
Can I receive visitors during my exchange? Yes, your family can visit you! However, we recommend planning this towards the end of your program since you will be busy with school, new friends, and experiences. Visits should be well-coordinated in advance with your host family and your local support person.
Can I participate in an exchange program with pre-existing conditions? If you have allergies, specific dietary requirements, or other pre-existing conditions, we will evaluate all possibilities together with you and your legal guardians.
Can I continue playing my favorite sport? Yes, with our Select Programs, you can attend a school that offers your favorite sport. Many schools even provide sports programs at a professional level! With our Classic Programs, you can still engage in sports, but we cannot guarantee, for example, a place on a team. Please speak to us, and together we will find the best solution for you.
Can I travel during my exchange? Yes, we recommend exploring as much of your new home as possible during your time abroad, provided the overall situation allows it. You have the opportunity to sign up for exciting trips, such as visiting Hawaii in the USA. Safety is vital when traveling within your host country. Independent travel during your stay is not an option. All trips must be supervised by adults, and your organization, host family, and legal guardian must be informed.
