New Zealand is comprised of two main islands, the North and the South, the latter of which is famous for its majestic Southern Alps. In winter, the skiing is great on both islands. In the summer, you can find swimmers, snorkelers, and surfers all along the beach there’s not a place in the country that is more than an hour drive from the coast.

New Zealand’s school year goes from late January to midDecember and is divided into 4 terms. Schools offer a large selection of subjects taught in a friendly, casual way that inspires a love of learning. Many schools have outdoor education programs which teach teamwork and other life skills.

"Living somewhere else without your family, friends or usual culture can be scary. It might be the scariest thing I have ever done. But the experiences I have had are completely worth it. The opportunity to meet new people and see a different country in a way you can’t experience just by visiting makes me feel so grateful for this year. Not only have I been welcomed into a new family, but I have become closer to finding out who I am and who I want to be. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions, travels, school and everything you can imagine. And if I get the chance I will gladly, do it all over again. "

Exchange reflections

What was your favourite part about the exchange?

“My favorite part of my student exchange was getting the opportunity to dive out of my comfort zone. This means having the independence to travel across the world at 15, explore the complete unknown, surround myself in a whole other culture, speak a new language, live with the most beautiful host family, attend a French school, explore and travel, eat things I've never eaten before, spend 5 months away from my 'normal life,' but most of all learn so much about myself as a person. I could never pinpoint a favourite part of my exchange because to me it was all an amazing experience.“

Have you kept in touch with your host family?

“YES! I call my host family at least once a week. I bonded so beautifully with them and they became such a massive part of my heart. Even after years of not seeing them, our bond has never broken.“

What was your funniest experience while on exchange?

“My funniest experience was when I ate snails. I was so grossed out I had to have a blind fold on haha. I worked myself up for it and when I ate it I kind of liked them. To me, all I could taste was the garlic butter. My host family and I have never laughed so hard.“

If you could re-do your exchange experience, what is one thing you would do differently and why?

“I would go for a longer period of time. At first, I thought 5 months was a long time however once I settled in and started picking up the language, time just flew by. 5 months felt way too fast. At the start I was homesick and did not understand much of the language but by the three-month mark, I was fully settled in and starting to pick up the language really well.“

What were you the most nervous about before your exchange?

"I was most nervous about leaving my family for 5 months and going into a 'strangers' home. However, I was proved very wrong. My host family are the most beautiful human beings to ever exist. They did everything to make sure I was comfortable and had fun. It was hard getting on the plane but it was worth every nervous shake and tear. All the nerves left my body once I met my host family for the first time."
