Next gen skaters soar in St Kilda The 2016 Bowl Riot Under 16 skating competition saw girls and boys from around the country and the world compete for thrills and a prize pool worth $10,000.

Zac Callahan, a familiar face from the St Kilda bowl, qualified first in the Under 16s, eventually taking out second place and a $2,000 prize.

We love hearing from our community and have started a challenging year by asking ‘How do we keep our City great?’

With a new cap on rates, we expect a $1.4 million funding gap if we deliver similar services and project investment as last year. This is because most of our costs are not part of what determines the general inflation rate. Through consultations, face-to-face and online, we have been receiving ideas and input to guide our priorities for the 2016/17 Budget. We look forward to sharing the results with you.

Our Council launched a huge summer campaign to complement the massive clean-up effort we always do when thousands of visitors flock to our parks and beaches, particularly on public holidays. It was disappointing that despite our very active campaign, including extra bins and cleans and

a social media blitz, some thoughtless revellers still left a mess. We’d love to hear your ideas on how we can further educate people to ‘enjoy, not destroy’. For inspiration, please go online and check out the face of our campaign, Phil the Penguin, who has become YouTube star.

Summer has been crammed with wonderful events, including the 21st Pride March. As well as a financial contribution, a Council contingent was among nearly 5,000 marchers supporting this year’s theme of marriage equality.

As we move into autumn, there are many things to do locally. Check out the classes listed in the liftout, the many local activities and opportunities to contribute to our community. What new activity will you try in 2016?

Award winners Sustainability Award for St Kilda Mums.

St Kilda Mums, Geelong Mums and Eureka Mums have won the Community Award and the Premier’s Recognition Award in the 2015 Premier’s Sustainability Awards.

Their Recycle, Reuse, Rehome project involves over 900 volunteers working in three regions to collect, recycle and rehome babies’ and children’s gear. In the process, they create a sustainable supply chain.

Volunteers clean and repair all donated goods and ensure that items meet national safety requirements. These items are then donated to families in need by social workers from 250 social welfare agencies.

Outside the margins Theatre Works is the local hub of the second Festival of Live Art (FOLA) to be held in March. Other hubs are the Footscray Community Arts Centre, and Arts House in North Melbourne. FOLA puts marginalised groups - in this instance, the neurodiverse and female playwrights - in the spotlight and features the topics of blindness, illness and ageing.

Highlights include Playing Shop, in which children aged 6-10 are invited to be part of the performance; Portraits In Motion, an Edinburgh Fringe award-winning work by German flip book creator Volker Gerling; Blind, a solo work

from internationally renowned dancer-puppeteer Duda Paiva; and Earshot, based on conversations overheard in St Kilda locations in February.

Premiering at St Kilda Town Hall will be the Theatre Works-St Martin’s co-production Genius, which invites you into the minds of eight neurodiverse young people and their topics of expertise, which range from Gough Whitlam to royal families of the world.

Art gets crafty at Port

A place for all in Acland Street Acland Street will soon be transformed with a refreshed streetscape, new pedestrian space near Barkly Street and a level access tram terminus.

Extending the footpaths will provide more pedestrian space and enable all people to board the Route 96 trams at footpath level. Under the Commonwealth Government’s Disability Discrimination Act 1992,

Safer speed limits for local streets Council plans to reduce the speed limit to 40 km/h on some local streets. Lower limits are proposed for parts of Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, St Kilda Road precinct and St Kilda East. About half of all local streets in Port Phillip already have 40 km/h limits.

Thanks to some crafty workshops being conducted until April with the Port Phillip Men’s Shed, free mini book swaps are popping up across our city.

For the final months of ARTcontained at Station Pier, community groups have taken over four shipping containers to run woodwork classes and exhibit artworks.

The Men’s Shed is using one of the containers to make oversized wooden letterboxes that will be used as book swapping hubs.

Waterfront Welcomers will invite cruise ship passengers to get swapping at Station Pier.

Other community groups are getting involved in book swaps in different locations across Port Phillip.

Port Phillip voters will elect a total of nine councillors across three new wards at council elections in October.

The increased number of councillors but fewer wards was recommended by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) and approved by the Minister for Local Government last year. After the October poll the current seven single-councillor wards will be replaced by three wards, each represented by three councillors.

The VEC recommended the increase to nine councillors because the population of Port Phillip had grown and was continuing to grow. The VEC also found that multi-councillor wards were the best way to fairly represent predicted population growth.

Council is handing out raffle tickets to bike riders who slow down and ring their bell before passing, and to walkers who stay left on shared paths and look before crossing.

Daughter is a locally produced and shot short film that explores gender violence and victim blaming. It tells the story of three women who venture out in St Kilda on a Friday night. Judged by strangers and their peers, their lives become entwined through an act of violence.

Writer and director Sarah Jayne was inspired to write Daughter by the media portrayals of the violent deaths of Jill Meagher in Brunswick and St Kilda’s Tracy Connelly. Jill’s case was highly publicised, while Tracy remained a stranger to most people. Only her occupation as a sex worker in St Kilda was highlighted.

The film’s producers plan to tour the film through local venues and schools to spark a wider discussion about issues raised in the film.

John Gilcrist: a good neighbour John Gilcrist died unexpectedly late last year. An active Elwood resident, John made an enormous contribution to the community. He was especially concerned for the wellbeing of his neighbours, particularly those who were socially isolated or less fortunate than him.

John was a founding member of the Linking Neighbours and Seniors Register, and helped establish the partnership between the Bendigo Bank and Linking Neighbours, enabling activities to be subsidised and inclusive. He was also a Linking Neighbours Heatwave Volunteer.

John was one of the founding board members of the Elwood Community Bank, which he helped establish. He made a great contribution as vice-president to the Elwood Croquet Club and as treasurer to the Port Phillip EcoCentre.

In 2008 John was awarded the Port Phillip Seniors Award for services to the community.

John is survived by his wife Noel, their three children and three grandchildren.

Books on wheels Yvonne is a Home Library Service (HLS) volunteer who’s been delivering books for 35 years. She fondly recalls a resident who adored her regular delivery of new Mills and Boons, and another whose dog had to be well patted before Yvonne was permitted to cross the threshold.

Yvonne loves volunteering. ‘Taking HLS deliveries to people is a very pleasant way

of meeting delightful people; they are so appreciative’. Yvonne is one of many volunteers who help homebound people get their next great read.

Group dynamic builds community Port Phillip Community Group was founded over 40 years ago to give more people opportunities to enjoy being part of their community. Here are just two of the many ways to get involved.

Boys in Years 4 - 6 are gaining life skills such as confidence, leadership, responsibility and team work in a bike maintenance program run by South Port Uniting Care. Volunteers are needed to help the boys with learning the parts of a bike, doing repairs and bike maintenance. The sessions are conducted at local schools during lunchtimes.

You can also volunteer to mentor young people at the Friday Night Lounge drop in space or help at the South Port Uniting Care Op Shop.

Women are invited to be part of the next Stance program starting soon in South Melbourne.

Fit, strong and moving on

Empowering female survivors of domestic abuse and assisting them on the road to recovery are the aims of a new pilot project in South Melbourne. The Stance is a free 12 session program that uses martial arts training to build personal and physical confidence, and gives women the opportunity to speak with other domestic violence survivors.

Men’s shed expands

The new second shed at the Port Phillip Men’s Shed Association means lots more space to accommodate new members.

The Men’s Shed offers woodwork and metalwork to men of all ages.

Veterans are especially welcome.

Activities on Acland

The Christ Church Mission Community Centre, next to the beautiful sandstone church on Acland Street, has activities and classes that are fun and affordable.

Classes include patchwork and quilting, yoga, simple cooking and an introduction to iPads. There’s also a community garden and garden nomads who volunteer to help with gardening for frail and aged locals.
