Board Of Maharashtra Board Of Maharashtra The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is a statutory and autonomous body established under the Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act 1965 (amended in 1977). The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Education, Pune came into existence on January 1, 1966 to regulate certain matters pertaining to secondary education in the state of Maharashtra, India. The act was amended in 1977 and the name of the Board changed to its present name - The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. The most prominent task of the board is to conduct the SSC and HSC examinations. The exams are conducted in March and results declared in June. In March 2000, 1.44 million students from 13,835 schools gave the SSC examination and over 800,000 students from 3,581 schools/colleges gave the HSC examination. The exams are conducted throughout the state of Maharashtra, and students studying in the Government-run High Schools are required to give this examination for further Secondary Education, for which the admission is given on the basis on merit. The Maharashtra State Education Board has been upgrading the syllabus since last couple of years from Class IX onwards to make it equivalent to CBSE syllabus. The 2011-12 batch of Std XI is currently studying the new syllabus. Now the board has decided to introduce some more changes in the syllabus of both Class XI and XII.

The new text books for Std XI will be printed by June, due to which the current batch will miss out. But students need not to worry as it will have no effect on the exams. When this batch moves to Class XII next year, they will have the text books as per the updated syllabus. The changes have been made in accordance with the vision of Council of Boards of School Education (COBSE) to set up a common syllabus across the nation. COBSE is the superior body where state education boards are members and is headed by the CBSE chairman. Adhering to the COBSE’s guidelines, the state board has added few topics as well as removed some to maintain uniformity with other boards. The new syllabus of the state board is at par with the CBSE which will prepare students for the proposed National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET). The Board has made the syllabus public and instructed all colleges to review the new syllabus. The new topics added have been marked in bold letters to distinguish the changes. The Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education was established in year 1965 under the Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act and Maharashtra State Secondary board was established on 1st January 1966, for the regulation of some matters related to secondary education in the state of Maharashtra. Maharashtra Secondary Boards Act was amended in the year 1977 and its name was changed to current name that is “Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education “. The first and foremost duty of “Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education” is to conduct the Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Examinations in the state of Maharashtra. Around 1.5 million students write Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC) examinations annually and around 1 million students write higher secondary Certificate Examinations (HSC) annually. The total number of schools affiliated to “Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education “is around 15000. “Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education” is headed by the chairman and currently Dr. Shreedhar Salunkhe is the chairman of “Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education’ and Mr. V. S. Mhatre is the chief secretary of the board and there are 13 other members of governing body.
