Approximately 9,689 schools are affiliated to CBSE and every year lakhs of students sit for the exam. Although the fundamental theme, testing the knowledge of the student remains the same; there has been some changes made to the whole system of examination like inclusion of the grading system etc. Examination Pattern CBSE is planning to introduce more objective type multiple choice questions and less subjective questions in the exam pattern. The exam is a 100 marks paper.Mostly the question papers for class Xth is of 80 marks and 20 marks are allocated for the practical. The 80 mark paper consists of MCQs and short answer type and long answer type questions. The Paper is divided into 2 parts within which Part I includes Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Part II includes short answer and long answer type questions. Passed the Middle School Examination(class VIII) of a Board or of an affiliated/recognized school at least 2 years earlier than the year in which he would take Secondary(Class X) examination conducted by the Board/Senior Secondary School affiliated to the Board. Passed Class IX examination from a school recognized by/affiliated to any other recognized Board in India at least 1 year earlier in which she/he would take the Secondary(Class X) examination conducted by the Board/Senior Secondary school affiliated to the Board.

Qualified Class IX examination by obtaining minimum Grade D in all the five subjects (excluding 6th additional subject) of study under Scholastic Area A and grades in subjects under Scholastic Area B and Co- scholastic Areas at least 1 year earlier than the year in which she/he would take the Secondary (Class X) examination conducted by the Board/Senior Secondary School affiliated to the Board. Scheme of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation shall be as under: There shall be no Board Examination at Secondary(Class X) level w.e.f. 2011 for students studying in the schools affiliated to the Board upto Senior Secondary level and do not wish to move out of the CBSE system after Class X from those schools. Students studying in schools affiliated to the Board upto Secondary level shall be required to appear in External Examination conducted by the Board as they shall have to leave the school after Class X. Students of Senior Secondary Schools who wish to move out of the CBSE system after Class X (Pre-University, Vocational course, Change of Board etc.) shall be required to take the Board's External Examination at Secondary(Class X) level. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is a education board for public as well as private schools that come under the jurisdiction of Union Government of India. The first education board that was set up in India was the Uttar Pradesh Board of High School and Intermediate Education in 1921, which was under authority of Rajputana, Central India and Gwalior. In 1929, the government of India set up a joint Board named "Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Rajputana". This included Ajmer, Merwara, Central India and Gwalior. Later on it was restricted to Ajmer, Bhopal and Vindhya Pradesh. In 1952, it was renamed as the "Central Board of Secondary Education".
