Early Greek philosophy was often concerned with how an object could be defined over time. Zeno of Elea was the first to ‘prove’ that movement was an illusion, purely a composite of still moments that together provide the illusion of motion . If time is structured, he said, then motion is impossible. Heraclitus later argued that this temporal permanence is relative, and any moment is in fact an expression of the change that is about to happen- a moving arrow’s direction implies the movement it is about to experience. With this reasoning, he figured that “you cannot step twice into the same stream, for as you step in, other waters are ever flowing onto you”. With this providing an overarching mantra in our work, we were concerned with the way in which we can continuously track water over time, building an ever-clearer understanding of how it behaves in relation to other factors, and expressing this interrelationship via a systematic account of the being of the river. Throughout our work, and through every stage, we have an awareness of the shortcomings in our methodology, and aspire towards a perfect representation of the river. Ptolomey in his Geographica says that it is the “most sublime contemplation of mankind to demonstrate by mathematical theorem an understanding of the heavenly firmament … of the Earth itself which, since it cannot be physically encompassed … can at least be moulded into an image of itself.” Our intention is then to survey the river in as much as we can and, to the best of our ability, capture the essence of the fluid state of the river. In these essences we can find, by the application of wisdom, the true state of the entire river. In Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis, a utopian island community of scientists and researchers work tirelessly to “find the true nature of things”. From this, researchers, or merchants of light, are sent out into the world to draw and collect information that is then brought back to the centre the operation, Salomon’s House; “the noblest foundation that was ever on this earth, and the lanthorn of [the] kingdom”. At this house, compliers “draw the experiments … into titles and tables, to give better light for the drawing of observations and axioms out of them”, while lamps “consider of the former labours and collections [to] direct new experiments, of a higher light, more penetrating into nature than the former”.

Drawing parallels between this and our elevated island site, we aim to create a new Salomon’s House for the better understanding of the fluid conditions of the river.

Our ontological model allowed us to experiment with the effect of water running over surfaces of varying texture and gradient. Using OS map data, we measured the gradients of several rivers on Rum at several points, and then identified the geology particular to those points. Each gradient was then tested across our model, while the geology informed the texture of the plates, which were laser-etched with simplified textures of the rocks across which each point of the river represented. Recording and documenting the results of the experiments, our findings were drawn up into an initial taxonomy by identifying certain measurable characteristics of the water; speed, aeratedness, purity, gradient, and interaction with texture. Allowing us to classify our results according to their outcome, our taxonomy could, to a point, predict the outcome of a similar set of conditions (ie. the plate texture and gradient).

Building on the findings of the ontological testings, we developed a set of survey instruments to use on Rum. Each was engineered to register a certain condition, as per those we had identified in the taxonomy, along with some we suspected would be helpful to measure on site, but had not been able to do on our ontological model; a sectional survey that addressed the atemporality of the 12x40cm plates we used. With eight conditions overall, we separated these into two groups of four: container conditions (bed texture, gradient, width and depth), and fluid conditions (surface texture, purity, speed and the deviation from the mean flow of the river). To transport these instruments along the river, we constructed a backpack, tailored to fit each piece in as light and space-efficient a way as possible. Our survey on Rum was conducted at eight sites we felt typified the stages of the river; source, dam, confluence, ford, meander, bridge, estuary and mouth. At each point, we used our instruments to measure four points across the river, in order to build an accurate sectional picture. From this information, we built up a picture, albeit a flawed picture, of the river by extrapolating our data across the length of a river by way of a second taxonomy. Though produced a posteriori, this taxonomy was in effect our ninth instrument and allowed us to speculate as to the condition of the river between our measuring sites.

P R O P O S A L

Understanding that we could infer the complete state of the river from only a few points of empirical data, our strategy and program is to complete our survey of the river. This survey and compilation will take happen at three scales. These three scales take into account the timescales at which each of their corresponding processes operate; the container conditions play out on a geological timescale, while the fluid conditions are, as per Heraclitus, infinite. With this in mind, four survey buildings will act as instruments themselves, each registering a single fluid condition. While each providing a visual register of the state of each condition, they will also provide a physical record of their condition. Mobile, micro-scale instrument packs will be provided at each of these stations to facilitate a more complete survey of the container conditions between the instrument locations. Used by volunteer merchants of light, they will provide a better understanding of the topography of the river, and will contribute towards a long-running process of survey and documentation. In order to highlight areas which have not recently been surveyed, micro docking stations will be positioned at 160 points along the river, and will include a socket into which a light bulb can be placed once the survey has been completed, signifying the sectional enlightenment of that river portion. Over a period of a few months, each bulb will burn out, indicating the need to re-survey the river, thus reflecting the slower timescale at which changes in the container take place. These stations will draw power from a hydroelectric generator at the macro building, which will collate the data taken along the river, thus building a picture of the river as it is, a Kantian noumenal image which is based purely on the data of the survey, as processed by a taxonomy. In effect, this macro building would be a physical manifestation of the taxonomy; a Salomon’s House equipped with a laboratory for analysis of the data, and a computer system for storing and interpreting it. By way of the micro survey, this taxonomy would be constantly adjusted, as it is refined towards an ever-more-accurate definition of the river. This macro building will be a base for the building and repairing of the instrument components, with a fully equipped workshop on the ground floor, with access to the river for the cleaning of the instrument parts. In addition the building will serve as an archive for the artefacts of data collected from each of the instrument sites, and will serve as a reference base for each of these for up to a year, until they are ejected from the building. Adjacent to the archive, there will be accommodation for a fulltime caretaker, a lamp, who is responsible for overseeing the archiving and interpretation of the data. Temporary accommodation will be provided for four volunteer merchants of light, who will assist with the micro strategy and the collection of the data.

At every one of the 160 survey points there stands a post. A beacon to the surroundings, articulating enlightenment on a site scale. A leaning post for the weary light merchant. An armature to suspend the laden backpack. A fixture for a signifier - a lightbulb - is mounted on the top.

An instrument surveying the water speed is the highest, and is composed of a series of horizontal spines that, actuated by a pressure tube that sits in the water, slides along a rail, translating the speed of the water into a kinetic articulation. Meanwhile, the instrument can be fitted with a scroll, on which the moving arms inscribe a graphical representation of the speed, which can be taken to the macro building for analysis.

The instrument surveying deviation will be the next furthest from the source, and, similarly to the speed register, is composed of multiple arms which are turned by rudders sitting in the water, rotating paddles fixed above in a single smooth expression of the water direction. Likewise, a scroll may also be attached to the instrument, onto which data is inscribed to be later analysed at the laboratory.

surface texture instrument / section / 1:50

Further down the river will be the instrument surveying surface texture. Composed of several light wells, this instrument is able to direct their aperture towards the sun, opening and closing to accommodate light changes throughout the seasons. These channel light down towards the surface of the water, over which sits a pin-hole camera, which is triggered manually to take negatives which can be brought back to the macro building for developing. Finally, the instrument registering purity is situated towards the estuary of the river, and is composed of four counterweighted arms, which contract when raised, and open when lowered, holding a folding sheet which collects sediment, and directs larger particulates towards a filter at the end. When raised, the sheet collapses into a cassette that can then be brought back to the macro building for analysis and archiving.

As our knowledge of the river grows, so does our archive. We invisage that as time goes on the raw data will overflow from its shelves, retained past a year in the skin of the building. As the picture of the river becomes solid, so the building gains a greater presence in the landscape; a visual manifestation of the ever-changing state of the river and the collection process.
