ANALYSIS
FRASER’S HILL
INTERNATIONAL BIRD RACE Organized by Frazer Hill Development corp. ,WWF malaysia and Malaysian Nature Society.
• Each group contains 3 participants • Watch and count number of birds seen within a specific confine and within a stipulated person • Team provide bird logbook with appropriately marked columns for reporting observations.
PROS: • Attract Birders from the United Kingdom, China, Hong Kong, Australia, South Africa and other countries to Pahang. • Increase the income • Healthy and enriching activity for bird racing enthusiasts. • Promote Fraser Hill.
CONS: • If not well maintained, pollution will bring negative effects to F.H. • Increase in temperature to the cool highlands will attract the lower montane birds, like hornbills, to go higher up the highlands. • Birds that relish and live in cool climates will die or disappear when they migrate to other cooler areas.
SOLUTION: • Preserve and maintain the environment, its ecological systems and forests. • Don't allow commercial greed to deprive future generations from enjoying the variety of melodious songs and the multitude of vibrant colours of birdies in Fraser's Hill. • Provide information regarding the international bird race to bring awareness to the public
LACK OF ATTRACTION • Fraser Hill’s incoming visitors is gradually decreasing due to competition with Cameron and Genting Highlands • Except for jungle trails/bird watching, other attraction are being dominated by CH & GH • Not attractive enough towards majority teens – adolescence
HISTORY AND CULTURAL
THE SOLUTIONS
• Promote through different media (Advertising) • Organize healthy events (Cycling, Marathon) • Improve variety of services

Building design should be built higher as it is located at a lower level
Located at the highest point (most potential) Easily accessible: safe for elderly & children Limited area of space (to be considered when constructing the bird watching tower) High probability to be affected by landslide Building designs structures may be terraced/ stepped with the slope (prevent landslide)

MATERIALS Horizontal Elements - Roof
Archery Ticket Counter
Lavatory
Horse Riding Ticket Counter
Stall
Red Ceramic Roof Tiles
Horse Stable
The red color is due to the ubiquitous iron oxide material, hematite. Non-combustible, durable, shades the interior by blocking direct sunlight
Staff’s Room
Grass growth and fallen leaves increases the weight on the roof, shortened the lifespan of the ceramic roof tiles
TYPES OF ROOFS
Skillion Roof
Cross Gabled Roof
Hip Roof
Arched Roof
• Zinc is a fairly good thermal conductor. • Low embodied energy. • Can be recycle indefinitely. Rest Station Roof
CEILINGS
Archery Ticket Counter
Horse Riding Ticket Counter
Rest Station
The ceilings are mainly made of gypsum, a crystalline form known as calcium sulphate dehydrate. It is ease of installation and also economy. The gypsum board are used to covered the services above the ceiling so that the interiors look tidy and pleasing.
HORIZONTAL ELEMENTS Floorings & Staircases Quarry tiles are applied on public areas as they are durable, inexpensive and able to receive a lot of abrasion.
Quarry tiles
Marble Flooring
Different materials of flooring are able to differentiate indoor and outdoor areas, such as marble flooring at indoors and unglazed ceramic floor tiles at outdoors Unglazed ceramic Floor Tiles
Stall
Rigid and able to withstand the pressure applied on it. It also creates a pathway to an elevated ground
Concrete Stairs
Used quarry tiles to cover the staircase allows it to look more aesthetic, lightened up the building and resistant to stains and slippery
Quarry Tiles Staircase at Horse Riding Ticket Counter
Poor installation of floor tiles formed groove which collects water, creates risk to the people who is passing by
PATHWAY ALONG PADDOCK The gravel pathway forms a harder surface than field for people to walk through, low maintenance
The sand pathway is only for the horses during horse riding as it is more comfortable for the horses to walk on it
Quarry Tiles forms a pathway within the field which connects archery from below the slope to the main road of The Paddock
This Asphalt road is the main road in The Paddock that leads from the main entrance until the forest behind. It is easier for the use by humans and vehicles
VERTICAL ELEMENTS Reinforced Concrete Columns
Archery Ticket Counter
Rest Station
The reinforced concrete columns support the weight of the roof, give extra open space within the area under the roof, allow sunlight to penetrate in for the environment to look bright and less opaque. Forms an invisible boundary that guide people to conduct activity within the area. It also enhance air ventilation. Horse Riding Ticket Counter
VERTICAL ELEMENTS Stone Slabs Columns and Walls
New Horse Stables
Stall
Stone Slabs Columns are like the formwork of the structure, determining the dimensions of the stables.
Stone Slabs Walls add the variations of materials of the structures, making the structure to look aesthetically beautiful and also a taste of the combination of nature with the architecture. Staff’s Room
VERTICAL ELEMENTS Fencings
Archery Ticket Counter
Horse Riding
Fencings act as a path guider, guide the people to their destinations and also for horses during horse riding Mark the boundaries around the area for safety purpose to keep people from dangerous places Archery
WINDOWS
Lavatory (Toilet Top Hung Windows)
Horse Stables (Aluminium Blinds Window)
Aluminum as the main material of the windows’ frames as it is durable, corrosion resistant and less maintenance Horse Riding Ticket Counter (Aluminium Casement Window)
Staff’s Room (Aluminium Casement Window)
Glasses used are laminated glass that helps in thermal insulation.
DOORS
Lavatory (Thermosetting Door)
New Horse Stables (Aluminum Blinds Door)
Light and durable. Humid resistant
Act as another ventilation medium, make the interior to stay fresh and dry
Horse Riding Ticket Counter (Wooden Door)
Has higher chance to be damaged by termites, need constant maintenance
PAINTS Algae growth
Grinning The colour of the previous coat (orange) shows through the dry paint film Flaking Paint falling away from surface is due to poor preparation or bad use of primer.
Paints with additives such as fungicides and weatherproof should be used as the weather in Fraser’s Hill is humid so that the paint can be lasted longer

SUGGESTED CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STRUCTURE OF BIRD TOWERS • Use of natural materials and elements that harmonize with the nature. • Less reflective elements and structures. • Structures that do not affect the habitat. • Activities that do not cause much sound or environment pollutions.

CONCLUSIONS
The best place for a bird watching tower is the site behind the paddock ( site2- 3) as there is a Verity Of trees which will attract more birds and less humidity. Furthermore it is a quiet place far from noises and an open area good for observation.
