EWC Welcomes New Members to the Family Edward Waters College is pleased to announce the hiring of four new employees: Eurmon Hervey, as Executive Vice President, Bertha Minus as Vice President for Academic Affairs, Wanda Willis as Director of UNCF and Alumni Relations and Edward Alexander, Director of Admissions.

Dr. Eurmon Hervey, Jr. filled the position of Executive Vice President in August. He has a background in higher education, both as a professor and as an administrator. He began his academic career at Edward Waters College as an instructor of mathematics. Hervey later earned a Master of Science degree in pure mathematics from Clark-Atlanta University and a Master of Education

from Harvard Graduate School of Education. He also earned the Doctor of Education from Vanderbilt University. Hervey joins the EWC Family from the Community College of the District of Columbia where he was the founding CEO. He also served the University of the District of Columbia as Acting Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Dr. Bertha Minus has a long and distinguished career in higher education which spans three decades. She has dutifully “climbed the academic ladder” having served as a professor, department chairperson, acting dean, and associate provost. In her new role here at Edward Waters College, Dr. Minus is responsible for helping

The students have spoken, and EWC has listened.

In addition to the new arrangement of seating and brand-new floors, students can now get their meals from Out-takes. Using the “Tiger Card” (student ID, room keys, and meal card) students are now able to grab a meal and go. Out-takes features pre-packaged salads, sandwiches, fresh fruit, chips, soda and more.

The seating arrangement in the cafeteria also affords students an opportunity to watch their meals being prepared while they wait and dine.

EWC Holds Food Bank Distribution for Local Community The SSCRC is receiving these funds to assist with program staffing and is one of only twelve programs from cities nationwide to be selected for this opportunity.

The SSCRC is in the business of providing life- long learning opportunities for adults and their families to improve their skills, pursue knowledge, seek advancement and enhance their self-worth.

Schell Sweet Community Resource The Schell-Sweet Center (SSCRC) is now holding a monthly food bank. Started in August, the distributions take place every third Saturday of the month at 9am. The funding for this program ensures that services such as foster care, food stamps, Medicaid and Medicare, and nursing home assistance are available.

The SSCRC provides health services, computer training, veteran services, grand-parenting classes, tax preparation, community service seminars/workshops, social services, employment referrals, and communication activities.

The Baker Suite Grand Opening On Wednesday, October 14th, Edward Waters College celebrated the opening of the Baker Suite at the John Hurst Adams-Jimmy R. Jenkins Sports & Music Complex. Ted and John Baker, perhaps best known for their association with Florida Rock, made a generous donation of $500,000 to complete the second floor of the complex. The completion of the complex included four classrooms, including a miniature recording studio with computers and equipment that will allow students to arThe Baker Suite is located on the 2nd floor range and mix their own compositions. CSX Donation

The completion of this building is very important to the college, as it allows both the athletic and music departments to have their own spaces to continue to grow. Utilization of the classrooms and offices began in August.

The CSX Corporation has generously donated over 25 desktops to Edward Waters College. These computers will be used in a variety of ways through-out campus to support students, faculty, and staff. ff..

This gift saves the Collegee tens of thousands of dollars in technology funds.

Dr. Minus earned her bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology from The George Washington University. She earned a master’s degree in speech-language pathology from the University of the Pacific. She completed the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Speech Pathology – Adult Neurological Disorders from Howard University.

Mrs. Wanda Willis has a background in aalumni and student pprograms, organizing eevents and groups, fund ddevelopment and public rrelations. She previoously served as Director oof Alumni Services for West Georgia UniverW ssity, but started her career in marketing and communications at the Georgia Pacific Corporation. Willis is very involved in the Jacksonville community where she has been Advisory Board Chair for WJCT, a member of the Malivai Washington Kids Foundation Board, and a member of the

Leadership Jacksonville Class of 2002.

Mrs. Willis earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Augusta State University and Master’s in Management from St. Mary’s College.

Mr. Edward Alexander comes to his new role as Director of Admissions for Edward Waters College from the University of the Virgin Islands, where he was Director of Admissions and Registrar. Alexander previously served as Director of Retention here at EWC. His career consists of various positions in the arena of enrollment, retention, and admissions at a number of colleges that include public, private, HBCUs, and other institutions. Mr. Alexander earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Barber-Scotia College and Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Pheonix.

UNCF 4th Annual Governor’s Luncheon Edward Waters College in conjunction with the United Negro College Fund held the fourth annual Governor’s Luncheon on Wednesday, October 28th at The Omni Hotel in downtown Jacksonville, FL. This year’s global sponsor was AT&T; BlueCross BlueShield of Florida and Darden Restaurants were the state sponsors.

The afternoon featured a performance by EWC’s world-renowned choir and engaging speakers that included The Honorable John Peyton, Mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, and Dr. Claudette Williams, President of Edward Waters College. The afternoon also included an inspirational message from DeKeva Cole, a student at Edward Waters College and UNCF Scholarship recipient.

This event is just one of three joint events that EWC will host with UNCF as a part of a joint campaign.

Alcohol Awareness On Campus On Friday, October 23rd the Edward Waters College Health Department hosted its annual Alcohol Awareness Day. Representatives from various agencies were on site sharing the dangers of alcohol with the students of Edward Waters College and surrounding community. One agency brought impaired vision goggles which gave participants the opportunity to experience one’s vision while under the influence of alcohol. There were also special-effects bicycles which allowed participants to learn what it would be like to drive while under the influence.

Homecoming 2009 - “Resurrection of Tiger Pride - Feel The Bite!”

Edward Waters College kicked off the month of October with a Homecoming Extravaganza. Between the Alumni Association and activities on campus for the students and community, the entire week was full. Students participated in a Monday Night Football Party, Luau on Centennial Lawn, Talent Show, and the Miss EWC Coronation, just to name a few of the activities. The Alumni Association also hosted a pre-homecoming concert, midnight bowling, old school jam, and the retirement of the “Cannonball” Butler’s football jersey. The week of activities closed with the alumni tailgate, the football game, the Greek Step Show, and the after-parties. The Alumni Association also held a Sunday Jazz Brunch.

Pink Monday In observance of October being breast cancer awareness month, the sophomore class and the office of Student Affairs at Edward Waters College designated Monday, October 26th “Pink Monday.” Students, faculty, and staff were asked to wear pink in recognition of breast cancer.

Some football players even went as far as using pink tape to for their cleats (shown below) and incorporating pink into their football uniforms in support of the cause. Students on campus also raised money by selling pink lapel ribbons throughout campus. The funds were given to the American Cancer Society.
