Produce a proposal for a new edition of Flatland, that challenges the conventions of ‘the book’ as we know it. Our concept was that of ‘not belonging and not fitting in.’ This is explored through the layout of typography and the format in which it sits and mirrors the journey of the main character, ‘Square’ in the novella.

The project was used as exploration of experimental formats as well as a continued practice of typography and layout across a range of deliverables.

Aimed at at fans of Flatland, who are well read and have an interest in mathematics as well as literature, we created a series of 12 packs (3 were proposed) containing limited edition posters, individual chapters of the book, a re-bound copy of the original novella and a set of mathematic, ruled and blank notebooks.

The folding method chosen for the chapbook is colloquially known as a ‘hot dog fold.’ With this fold we were able to create a multifunctioning chapbook. Firstly the pocket size book works as a narrative of one chapter of the novella. Transferring the reader into a 3 dimensional space and invites them to think deeper about the concepts and ideologies of the book.
OUGD303
The pocket size chapbook allows the reader to conveniently place it in his/hers pocket or bag. It is designed to be light and able to be read either on a commuters journey to or from work or at ones desk during a break, perhaps at work.
When opened fully the space returns back to a 2 dimensional area, provoking the reader again to think about the often confusing relationship between dimensions as explained by Abbott.

The posters are experimental in their layout, with the type and design shifting freely around the 2 dimensional space, much like in Tlatland. The elements that escape the page reflect the ambition of ‘Square’ who seeks knowledge outside of the confines of his 2 dimensional world.
OUGD303
These are designed to be collectable pieces rather than promotional material and if put into production would suit a high end finish.

As each pack comes with a re-bound copy of the original novella, it will encourage the purchaser to hand a copy on to a friend, expanding the awareness of the book and will bring Abbott back some way into the publics’ attention. Attention that he greatly deserves...

The re-release of the book would be a semi-prestigeous event, held at either a quitessential book store, or one like this that brings the novella into a contemporary scene. Signage and point of display designs would be required to direct the attendants around the event, though would mainly act as a high end spectacle on which to justify such a presigeous product.

The banner’s main function is to grab attention, with the information hanging in 2 thick columns at the bottom.
