Several components that eventually played a key role in the development of the automobile were originally invented for the bicycle – e.g., ball bearings, pneumatic tires, chain-driven sprockets, spoke-tensioned wheels, etc.
The invention of the bicycle has had an enormous impact on society, both in terms of culture and of advancing modern industrial methods.

A guide to your guide
A person who rides a bicycle is called a cyclist or a bicyclist.
A bicycle, also known as a bike, pushbike or cycle, is a pedal-driven, human-powered, single-track vehicle, having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other.
Road Races LBW PUB FIN.indd 6

Courses may run from place to place or comprise one or more laps of a circuit; some courses combine both, i.e., taking the riders from a starting place and then finishing with several laps of a circuit (usually to ensure a good spectacle for spectators at the finish). Races over short circuits, often in town or city centers, are known as criteriums. Some races, known as handicaps, are designed to match riders of different abilities and/or ages; groups of slower riders start first, with the fastest riders starting last and so having to race harder and faster to catch other competitors.
The first competitor to cross the finish line after completing the prescribed course is usually declared the winner. However, in some one-day races competitors are individually timed, and the winner is the person who completes the race in the shortest time.
Road bicycle racing is a bicycle racing sport held on roads, using racing bicycles. The term “road racing” is usually applied to the events where competing riders start simultaneously (unless riding a handicap event) with the winner being the first to the line at the end of the course.
Road racing in its modern form originated in the late 19th century. The sport was popular in the western European countries of France, Spain, Belgium, and Italy. Some of Europe’s earliest road bicycle races remain among the sport’s biggest events.
Single-day races
Road bicycle racing
This can be used as a strength or a weakness by competitors; riders can cooperate and draft each other to ride at high speed (a paceline or echelon), or one rider can sit on a competitor’s wheel, forcing him to do a greater share of the work in maintaining the pace and to potentially tire earlier. Drafting may not be employed in a time trial, unless it is a team time trial.
Though the objective of a race is quite simple – to be the first rider to cross the finish line – a number of tactics are employed. Tactics are based on the aerodynamic benefit of drafting, whereby a rider can significantly reduce the required pedal effort by closely following in the slipstream of the rider in front.

Tires usually have a pronounced lugged tread, and mounted on rims which are stronger than those used on most non-mountain bicycles. Compared to other bikes, mountain bikes also tend to more frequently use disc brakes and indexed gears. They also tend to have a lower gears to facilitate climbing steep hills and traversing obstacles.
Off road biking or Mountain biking is a sport which consists of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially adapted mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain.
Mountain bikes differ from other bikes primarily in that they incorporate features aimed at increasing durability and improving performance in rough terrain. Most modern mountain bikes have front fork or dual suspension, tires, usually from 1.7 to 2.5 inches in width, and a wider, flat or upwardly-rising handlebar that allows a more upright riding position. They have a smaller, reinforced frame, usually made of wide tubing.
This individual sport requires endurance, core strength and balance, bike handling skills and self-reliance. XC type mountain biking generally requires a smaller range of skills but a higher level of
Mountain biking can generally be broken down into multiple categories: cross country, trail riding, all mountain, downhill, freeride, street riding, dirt jumping and trials. The vast majority of mountain biking falls into the recreational XC and Trail Riding categories.

The good news for morning people is that people who exercise in the morning gain more benefits than people who work out at other times of day. This is not to say that just because you cannot exercise in the morning that you should not work out at all. It just means that morning exercisers enjoy even more health benefits by getting out of bed for physical activity.
We know it is hard to find time to get on you bike and have a good old ride. So as a part of this fantastic week, we encourage you to join in with these active companies and people and cycle to work. Feel free to organize your own work events and send the details in to use via an e-mail.
Get Up and Active If you can arrange your schedule to work out in the morning the benefits are definitely worth it. It’s not easy, especially for those who can barely get out of bed when the sun comes up or the alarm goes off. But if you can manage it you might find your salvation sits with your bicycle.
