Once I was travelling from Embu to Chuka, and I boarded a matatu that had this sticker on the rear-view mirror that read, “mapenzi ya matatu, gari wanne wanne kama PK” (loosely translated as ‘four per bench is the order of the day’). Sadly for the natives of Chuka,
the drivers of the said matatus acknowledge this ‘rule’. I complained a couple of times about the overloading but then came the silencer: “lazima tupate chakula” (‘we must get our daily bread’). Recently I saw passengers disembark from the boot of a taxi and thought, ‘this love of money is getting out of hand!’
