Super gold I
t’s the ultimate prize every NFL player seeks during his career — the right to be called a Super Bowl champion. And with that distinction comes respect, pride and, best of all, a big gold, gaudy ring for all to see. All 40 teams that have won the big game were given rings to signify the achievement. The designs of the rings, along with the price tag, have changed significantly over the years.

RING TONES ■ Bears defensive lineman William ‘The Refrigerator’ Perry (Super Bowl XX) has the largest ring size (25) of any player. ■ The 2005 New England Patriots’ ring has 124 diamonds and weighs a quarter-pound, making it one of the most expensive Super Bowl rings, which is valued at $15,000. ■ On ebay: Starting bid for authentic Johnny Unitas Super Bowl V ring: $30,000.
LET FREEDOM RING ■ In June 2005, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was in a business meeting with American executives and Russian president Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, Russia. At one point during the meeting, Putin asked to see Kraft's 2005 Super Bowl ring (from Super Bowl XXXIX). Kraft removed the ring and handed it to Putin, who looked at it briefly, then pocketed it and left the room. Later, Kraft said the ring was a gift. The ring has been put in the Kremlin library along with other foreign gifts.

RING BOWL ■ Jewelry companies compete heavily to be chosen as the ring provider. The competition starts once the jewelers have an idea of which teams might be contenders for the Super Bowl title. They present the designs after the game.
