HAPPY NEWSLETTER 2013!

Welcome to the first St. Margaret’s House newsletter of 2013. We hope you all had a wonderful festive period and that you’re just as excited as we are about the year ahead. This year we aim to bring you more varied community events and to involve more local people than ever. We’re a platform for creative expression and we’ve got the space if you’ve got the ideas. If there’s a particular creative or community oriented project or event that you’d like to see realised in 2013, then we may be able to help. Just get in touch!

Music and Words Booked and It's All Happening are getting together to bring you a night of two of life's finest things - music and words. There will be acoustic music, melodic bands, poetry performances, readings and all combinations of music and words, words and music. Taking place on Saturday 19th January, the event will be the perfect antidote to January blues, with performances from Eliza Shaddad, actors from Liars' League, Anthony Anaxagorou and Drew Worthley to name just a few. Booked aim to work with various charitable organisations to foster a culture of community spirit and encouragement to those with literary talent, to get their voices heard and create a celebration out of their work. Venue selection will be based on the style of event content and the target community, to get people exploring London and its vast array of cultures and communities. The Gallery Cafe has been specifically selected for these reasons. For more information visit Booked Literary Events

The future is bright Have you got an interesting idea that might serve to bring the community together? Whether it’s a creative project, a workshop or something else entirely, we’re here to listen to your ideas and to support you. We’ll be looking to expand our after-school programme in 2013 and to work more closely with local women’s and mental health care centres to provide more activities for their service users. There’ll be plenty of opportunities to volunteer in the coming year so if either you or someone you know is thinking of volunteering please do get in touch with us at volunteer@stmargaretshouse.org.uk.

Ayoka Did you receive some Christmas gifts that you know you’ll never use? Or perhaps you received so many great new things that you need to get rid of some of the older things that are clogging up your home. Why not declutter and bring the excess over to Ayoka? Read about Ayoka here

Quaker Social Action (QSA) has received a Guardian Charity of the Year award for Down to Earth, its work against funeral poverty. Down to Earth is a mentor-led project that supports people living on a low income, and often already struggling with debt, to arrange an affordable funeral for their dearly departed. QSA has been working in east London since 1867 and has created a series of innovative services including a rent guarantee scheme and a financial literacy programme. Current projects range from life coaching for vulnerable people to working with east end estates to organise street parties so residents can meet their neighbours. BPCA (The Bangladeshi Parents and Carers Association) is a voluntary organisation that works with people with multiple disabilities from ethnic minorities. It is a family led project which provides day care facilities for high dependency users. It is also the largest user group in residence at St. Margaret’s House. 2013 is set to be a year of hard graft for the BPCA since they’ve taken major cuts to their budget. It’s crucial that organisations like the BPCA are kept running in order to equip disadvantaged sectors of the community with the necessary options for a better quality of life.
