Architecture Portfolio Selected works from M. Arch | Program at Melbourne University 2018 - 2019 + Professional & Training experiences 2017
Hello, I’m Siew Ying Cheong, my friends and colleagues called me Lynn. I am a 2019 architectural graduate from The University of Melbourne, with Master of Architecture and am currently seeking an Architectural Graduate
position. I have
a year of professional training in an architecture firm in Malaysia before proceeding my two years of Master programme in Melbourne.
As a Architectural graduate, I view myself a keen and hardworking who enjoys working either
as a part of a team or individually. I can work under stress and burning curiosity to go with the action to see what is all about. The desire to acquire new skills to encounter different challenges are my primary motivation, together with a constant need for personal enhancement. However, the weakness of me is that I cannot say No when someone asks for help and take decisions very quickly. I am very passionate about any task related to architecture, especially designing and problem-solving.

Thesis Question & Solutions
Does architecture have the capacity to be restorative ?
and if so, then by what means can this be achieved with the context of my statement aim to design an
emergency housing that investigates the possibility of the self-sustaining concept between ex-homeless and homeless people. The meaning of self-sustaining in this project
is the occupants who stay in the housing able to help one another by providing physical and mental help. The occu-
pants will be divided into two categories: long term and short term occupant. Long term occupants are people who overcome the experience of homelessness but need a long term of stays such as youth, older adult and disabled people. The short term occupant stays as transitional or emergency accommodation. The two main strategies as design responds in this project are
Thesis Description
communal space and balconies/pocket spaces.
The common misperception on homelessness is as an older man with alcohol or drugs problem who sleep on the street; however, they only represent 7% of the homeless population that visible to the public in Australia.
The communal spaces aim to gather the two occupants for interaction in a larger group of people. Balconies/pocket spaces provide a hideout moment or homeless from the public to regain their personal moment and allow intimate private conversation between the two occupants.
Homelessness goes beyond ‘rooflessness’, and it affects all ages, all genders and all
background. The hidden homeless often stay in severely crowded dwellings, Couchsurfing, boarding house or even in cars. There are many causes of homelessness such as domestic violence, financial difficulties, housing crisis, relationship breakdown, sudden job loss, illness or another unexpected disruption can affect anyone. The number of people experiencing homelessness has risen significantly in Melbourne over the past year.
Illustation 01: View of site entrance, highlighting homeless sleeping on the pedestrian walkway. (photograph + photoshop)
An obvious solution to the issue is a shelter with security, stability, privacy, safety and the ability to control living space, but what about those who have been abused or experienced violence? Is a shelter enough for violence victim to overcome homelessness? Is hard to imagine someone else’s situation when you are never in their position.
“No man’s knowledge here can go beyond his experience’’ - a quote by John Locke, explains that no matter how much a man studies and understands about something, nothing truly compares to experiencing it. People who have overcome the experience of homelessness are more convincing to help the homeless people to regain their independence and get back on their feet. Therefore, the design response should include ex-homeless people to integrate with homeless people.

BASEMENT DIAGRAM: WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM: The idea of self-sustaining not only applies to the concept between two occupants but also building services. Water harvesting system is introduced to the design to serve domestic use, irrigate plants and aims to reduce water costs. Rainwater is collected from roof garden to the tank at the basement, and serve the building after filteration. PARKING LOT: Few parking lots at the basement is designed for the homeless people who used to live in the car and to respond to the lack of parking lots in the city for the service and maintenance workers.
FORMAL ZONE: Formal zone consisting information counter, staff office and mailboxes. The formal zone is located at the front area of the ground floor, providing easy access for the public and homeless people to contact the building management. CASUAL ZONE: The casual zone is located at the back of the ground to activate the Hardwood PL lane. The casual zone is a dining space that serves the occupants also opens to the public and will be operated by the long term occupant in the communal kitchen. The dining area able to accommodate up to 200 pax (100 occupants and 100 public). It acts as a platform that provides opportunities for the occupant to build up skills and confidence to engage with society. TRANSITION ZONE: Transition zone consisting lobby and waiting area, computer access area, cafeteria and display shelves. The transition zone acts as a connector and divider between the formal and casual zone of the ground. The users can access the computer and wifi for online services or wait at the lobby seating area while waiting their turn to contact the staff. A centre cafeteria allows the user to grab a coffee or quick snack. Art and craft made by the occupant in the communal workshop will be display at the centre shelves.

Project Solution The project consists of 3 main programs: Tea-house, Hookah studio and dance studio. Klub Hookah is a flipped over teahouse and cultural activities: Hookah smoking and dancing from underground to the public for the Iranian LGBT community who migrated to London to seek for cultural freedom and to be whom they wanted to be without any restriction and discrimination. The reverse of the prohibited activities from underground, allow the community to celebrate the cultural freedoms with the public, allowing them to live in the truth and no longer live at risk.
Big Idea

Project Description Klub Hookah is a project about cultural freedom for Iranian LGBT community. If the person gets caught of being part of the LGBT community in Iran, he or she will be executed and hanged in public. In this case, Iranian LGBT pretends themselves as a straight person in public. They refer themselves as living ‘underground’ by hiding away from the public to mitigate the risk of being arrested. In Iran, a tea-house is a platform for Iranian to gather and hang out, but all the cultural activities that are prohibited from performing in public such as dancing and smoking hookah are expressed in the hidden part within the tea-house. In the hidden part, Iranian LGBT relaxes and reveals their real identity and could behave in the way they truly believe in, despite the restrictions of cultural freedoms.
The entire building is covered by a seamless steel mesh curtain, providing a translucent effect as a screen for the interior and exterior. When the user adjusts the level of translucency for programs, it transforms the building into enigmatic space. The mesh curtain is adjustable depending on how much they want to reveal to the public. When space is used, The silhouette movement cast on the external surface of the metal mesh curtains creates curiosity to the passer-by and glimpse of the activities inside. As the passerby approaches the building, the outdoor dining and the scent of tea lures them into the tea house.
[...It’s very hard to live as a homosexual in this country. It is me or it is the culture. society, history or all of them? Loneliness is killing me...] - Lesbian, 34 years old, Tehran.
The Iranian LGBT community see London as a new opportunity of living without any cultural restrictions and discrimination. After they left Iran, their ingrained habits of joining cultural activities are still a significant part of life.

Site Location : Fiztroy
Project Description The project challenges the misconceptions, accepted norms and orthodoxies that reside in architecture and urban placemaking. Using housing as the primary medium, the project will seek to examine these aspirational hangovers and explore a new method of housing and living for future generations. Interested in the density the project will seek new models of growth within the suburb of Fitzroy by exploring new housing typologies into the rich urban fabric of this suburb. The project encourages divergent thinking by challenging the typology of the apartment tower and boldly address how we
will live in the future.

|
Studio Design
Big Idea The key idea in this project is to gather people at the site. Back to basic, instead of gathering the outsider into the site, the CUBE project is designed to gather the existing occupants/residents in the four towers to create the idea of intergenerational living style. The common solution is to move out and look for a bigger house, especially the young adults and newly married couples. But, not all families in social housing has the budget to do so. This project will, however, support and allow for accommodation of extended families in the existing towers as well as encourage the intergenerational living style. The idea is to encourage the residents to stay on-site by using the existing tower as the base of design to grow or attach new rooms and spaces. Different possibility of characters and spaces are studied and designed as an extension or plug-in to the existing apartment for the occupants.
Each room expresses the user’s living style and personal cultural identity. The project also encourages people to ‘customise’ their spaces by providing a series of pre-fabricated wall modules and facade. However, users are encouraged to set up their walls, partition and facades.

This concept idea take times to development according to the needs of the families, the budgets and the speed of families extension. Top render: In five years, a few extension of modulars will be plug in to the existing tower. Centre render In 15 years, the extension of new modulars getting denser as the user’s population and demand keep increasing. Bottom render: In 30 years, a new neighbourhood can be achieved.
The ground floor is excavated, and staircases are designed in a different direction of the street to give the sense to guide the public to enter the park. The existing playground and community garden are relocated to the new park at the centre of the site which aims to soften and balance the neighbourhood’s continuously growing.

Three moments are selected as the project focus: •Moment 01 : Visitor Entry •Moment 02 : Visitor Moment | Dining Area •Moment 03 : Occupant Moment | Bedroom
Project Description According to the reading of Deconstruction by Jacques Derrida, in the concept of signifier and signified, he argues that every word does not have a definite
meaning and rely on one another to convey a perception of reality. Language is continually evolving, and the meanings hang on the state
that you are looking at it. So, the word is only a presentation of the idea we desire to show. To summarise my understanding of domesticity, a representation can be an illusion. It is as much as anything is real, it is also unreal. To bring the meaning of domesticity, the representation required two opponents to bring out the idea of the space.
Based on the interpretation of deconstruction, Domesticity is the space for the occupant to show what they need to reveal versus what they want to reveal, and what is revealed remains in the concealed state. The function and understanding of the spaces in Domesticity can be interpreted very differently between the occupant and
visitor.
Domesticity should be a space that allows the visitor to keep on questioning their
surroundings, hints of the concealed spaces, create uncertainty and curiosity. It will become the force that guides the visitor to walk through space, which is controlled by the occupant who decides to reveal or conceal. The activities and programs that involve only the occupant or the visitor or both users can define concealing and revealing spaces. The spaces are connected to a threshold and are structured by a centre core, which is the void.
“ How can another see into me, into my most secret self, without being able to see in there myself? And without my being able to see him in me. And if my secret self, that which can be revealed only to the other, to the wholly other, to God if you wish, is a secret that I will never reflect on, that I will never know or experience or possess as my own, then what sense is there in saying that it is my secret, or in saying more generally that a secret belongs, that it is proper to or belongs to some one, or to some other who remains someone. It’s perhaps there that we find the secret of secrecy. Namely, that it is not a matter of knowing and that it is there for no one. The question of the self: who am I not in the sense of who am I but rather who is this I that can say who? What is the - I and what becomes of responsibility once the identity of the I trembles in secret?”
-Jacques Derrida, The Gift of Death.

MOMENT 01- VISITOR ENTRY There are two entries in this dwelling, one for the visitor and another one for the occupant. The entry for the visitor is placed at Entry Moment. At this moment, the visitor will push on the doorbell at the centre and wait for the occupant to respond from the inside. While waiting for the occupant to open the door, the visitor will stand on the platform and peep through the window to get a hint of what is happening inside. Here is a revealing point for the visitor where the interior contents on the inside are partially exposed through the window.

MOMENT 01- VISITOR ENTRY
The revolving door for the visitor has three wings when a visitor pushes the door forward; the door will rotate inward and turn to the left direction. After the visitor enters the space, the door rotates and conceals the window. This moment gives a sense to the visitor that they are inside and what they see when they are standing in front of the window is now gradually revealed.

MOMENT 01- VISITOR ENTRY
The Occupant Section drawing illustrates the entry for the occupant. The entry for the occupant is hidden at the end of the bedroom. The occupant needs to walk up the staircase, which is concealed, from the visitor. The journey of the occupant on the stairs does not reveal any contents inside the space, because the occupant belongs to space, and they are very familiar with space. These two entries support the users by physically moving from the exterior to the interior. At the same time, this can structurally support the whole dwelling at the two ends of the buildings.

The bathroom located at the lowest level of the dwelling shows the idea of concealing yet accessible to both users. The void divides the shower area from the sink and toilet. The shower area is not commonly used by the visitor and is consider as private space that is conceal and hide in the void yet visually access from the toilet area. The occupant will access from the bedroom down the staircase to the shower area. Whereas, the visitor will enter from the threshold that connected to the dining area.

MOMENT 03 - OCCUPANT SECTION
The Occupant Moment is the view facing the visitor’s entry through the void by the occupant sitting on the seating area. In this moment, where all the paper works, books, laptops, pillows and blankets are placed over the space. This reflection of what is behind the seating area, which can only be view by the occupant. At the opposite space, which is the dining area, the dining sets and leftover foods are placed over the place to indicate the visitor uses the place. The idea shows that the occupant works and rests at this seating area while watching the visitor in the adjacent space. All the services that support the dwelling are kept at the bottom of the void. The structures of the dwelling are all connected and supported by this void.

In conclusion, the design of this dwelling is to show the different perspective between two users: the visitor and the occupant in relationship to concealed and revealed space. The solid material is used for the visitor entry in contrast to the transparent interior walls. At the same time, the exposed transparent wall is revealing the contents of the space but concealed from visitor to access. The revealed spaces are the representation of what the occupant wants to show off. What is showed might not be the real content, yet what is not exposed might be the real content.

MY ROLE IN THE PROJECT
I was incharged with the podium area and produced: •Conceptual & massing diagrams •North-east Facade elevation •Overall Section indicating different levels •Lobby Facade : General Management •Podium Structural Glass Facade including Provision of Entry & Disabled Acess •Key Construction Details, Plans and Section details at 1:10 & 1:5
Project Description In response to the surrounding issue and context, two edges of the form are curved; the north-eastern edge facing La Trobe is curved to get a panoramic view from the interior towards the Carlton Garden. The southwestern edge facing Exhibition Street is curved to create a sense of welcome at the ground level. It activates the back lane, also to form another panoramic view from the interior towards the city. Besides, the form of the building allows wind flow separation from upstream face sides; increasing velocity and negative pressure on the sides. The size and form gradually decrease as it goes higher, to provide a sense of continuity form from the ground to the tip. The back lane of the site is activated from the placement of the public open space at the ground podium area; it also acts as the main entry for the public at the rear building. The building core shifted back and forth to incorporate with the proposed form of the space, to ensure adequate space for the occupants. NLA + GFA + SETBACK The site has a total area of 8,844sqm (92.5m X 95.5m), and the proposed tower has a footprint of 6800sqm (85m X 80m) at ground floor level. It has a total of 145,856.54 sqm of GFA (Gross Floor Area) and 106,641.86 sqm of NLA (Net Lettable Area). The tower achieves an overall efficiency of 77.7% with a total height of 300.60m and 350m including the tip of the crown. As the tower increases in floor levels, the overall efficiency gradually increases from 73% (podium) to 78.9% (sky rise). A boundary setback of 5m from adjacent streets (La Trobe Street and Exhibition Street) applies to Lobby area; the spaces allow urban integration such as pedestrian walkways, garden beds, seating areas and pathway for entrances.

Project Description The selected documents work created in a professional office while I was an assistant architect in Studio Asean, Malaysia. The projects I worked on included a variety of small to medium scaled residential and commercial renovations. I performed a variety of roles across these projects but most frequetly was responsible for schematic design, construction and fabrication drawings, project documentation, engaging with suppliers and clients, and on-site progress checking. Selected projects and my task: •BU House Construction Drawings (ongoing project): My responsible in this project include site measuring, schematic design proposals and client meeting. My focus in this project was to produce detail and construction drawings of bathrooms for the builders. •VERDE Apartment Inteiror design and construction (completed): I have the opportunity to handle the whole project from beginning to the end (schematic stage until installation). Responsible for producing schematic design, construction and fabrication drawings, engage with the client, builders, and suppliers and on site progress checking. •BETA Restaurant & Bar KL (completed): My tasks in this project were to propose lightings type and design, overall electrical routes and plans for the restaurant, and feature ceiling for the dining area. I was also responsible for checking the progress of builders on site and fabrication in the factories.

Fabric ducts diffuse conditioned air more widely in a shorter time, reducing loads on HVAC equipment and saving energy. Fabric ducts are also less expensive and less resource-intensive than metal ducts and can contribute to better indoor environmental quality due to ease of cleaning.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
SEPTEMBER 2017 Letter of Recommendation for Ms.Eelyn Cheong To whom it may concern, We are truly grateful for the opportunity to have been able to work with Eelyn during her year out in our architectural design studio situated near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As such we are most pleased to put up a recommendation of the highest order for Eelyn’s application to further he studies at The University of Melbourne. During her time here, Eelyn showed outstanding dedication and creativity. Coupled with her natural propensity to have a sense of curiosity and aided by a natural fearlessness in taking on new ideas and putting it to application, Eelyn had not only been able to grasp our CAD operations quickly, but also was involved as a key member in delivering a series of projects of high complexity during her time here. Of note was an interior architectural fit out of a luxury dwelling (Verde) for a PR Director at a suburb near Kuala Lumpur. Here, Eelyn showed tremendous courage in what is her first project, both in diligently delivering design drawings and especially excelled at site implementation into an the outcome of an outstanding piece of interior architecture. This project was thus highly commended by the client and they had highly valued Eelyn’s role in the success of the project. Eelyn was also a key member of a team that delivered a set of tender documents for Lend Lease Malaysia’s latest site office for their flagship TRX mixed-development here in KL. Eelyn performed her role as the pivot in compiling our architectural team’s documentation drawings. Working together as the local architectural partner with renowned architect’s GRIMSHAW, Eelyn coordinated and updated client requirements on a 1500sqm office fit out. As such, our set of specifications and design drawings was delivered effectively and at this moment of this letter, being utilised for construction on site. Eelyn is an immensely bright and important asset in the studio and she shows consistently, a highly sensitive nuance in her work approach and care towards people usually only seen in more advanced graduates and architects. Being an alumni member of the architecture faculty myself, I truly believe that Eelyn will benefit tremendously by the deep thought processes and considerations that the university’s architectural school cohort proliferates in, as has myself around a decade ago. Therefore, I will not hesitate to highly recommend Eelyn to be part of of our Masters Programme and I am very sure that she would be very likely to make a difference in the architectural fraternity either in Melbourne or beyond.
Yours Sincerely,
81
