Design Intention & Brief
In assignment 4, a design proposal of replacement staircase and enclosure is designed to replace the existing staircase located at The Redmond Barry building within the University campus. The staircase design proposal is integrated with envelope to provide shading to the users. The design is optimised to perform well in structure and fabrication. The concept of continuous flow in terms of circulations and structural is the main study in this design. The continuity of structural and fabrication of the steps connecting to the envelope not only to provide circulation but also shading to the users. The envelope of the staircase is designed in twisted vertical forms for shading purpose with ventilation occurs through the gaps between the structure. Attractors are inserted in Grasshopper to control the twisting effect of the envelope structures. To obtain an optimum sun shading as an envelope. The model is tested out using Ladybug plugin. A few aspects are focused during the analysis such as the gaps between the envelope structure, twisting envelope structure and thickness of the structural members. The analysis is analysing throughout the year, from 9am to 5pm, daily. A few model studies are tested out and compare to get an optimum outcome.

Data Matching Rhino>GH
1. Create base line in Rhino and match to GH.
9. Plug in Ladybug and connect to the GH model to study sun shading analysis.
2. Staircase’s step data match to the staircase baseline. 3. Adjustable step dimension.
8. Copy the model upwards
4. Loft baseline to create envelope form.
5. Contour the lofted surface to create vertical structure member.
7. Attractor points and lines to adjust the twisting of vertical members.
