But there’s lots to see that’s exciting and new too.
P R A IS E F O R A DOP T E D “This book has the power to enlarge the circle around our families—or, better yet, to erase the circle altogether, so that our vision of family is as wide and as expansive as God’s.”

Adopted
The Sacrament of Belonging in a Fractured World Kelley Nikondeha Foreword by Shane Claiborne
In this compellingly readable book Kelley Nikondeha— adoptive mother and adopted child herself—thoughtfully explores the Christian concept of adoption. Her story and her biblically grounded reflections will give readers rich new insights into the mystery of belonging to God’s big family. “Part memoir, part theological exposition, Adopted: The Sacrament of Belonging in a Fractured World expands our understanding of what it means to be the family of God. As both an adopted person and an interracial adoptive parent, Kelley Nikondeha writes with transparency, tenderness, and racial awareness. . . . This wonderful book will illuminate a path for all people to experience sacred relationships.” — Christena Cleveland
author of Disunity in Christ: Uncovering the Hidden Forces That Keep Us Apart
“Nikondeha writes with the heart of a poet and a theologian, and as an adopted child and an adoptive parent. Who could have guessed that her story could give such rich insight into theology, family, society, racism, fear, and belonging?” — Brian D. McLaren
author of A New Kind of Christianity: Ten Questions That Are Transforming the Faith
“Through the metaphor of adoption, Kelley Nikondeha calls us to a vision of family that is generous, inclusive, and always ready to add another chair. This is the vision of the family of God I long for.” — Idelette McVicker
founder and editor-in-chief of SheLovesmagazine.com
“Nikondeha effortlessly interweaves her lived experiences of adoption with provocative biblical stories and a daring theological imagination. So good!” — Drew G. I. Hart author of Trouble I’ve Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism

“Just when we think we’ve unearthed all the great Christian classics of the past, new ones emerge to surprise and enchant us. This book is just such a classic. . . . Had Shakespeare written prayers, they would certainly not have been any more beautiful than the ones in Four Birds of Noah’s Ark.”

Four Birds of Noah’s Ark
A Prayer Book from the Time of Shakespeare Thomas Dekker Edited with an introduction by Robert Hudson
A timeless, little-known literary classic to engage a new generation of readers As the Black Death ravaged London in 1608, in the midst of societal chaos and tragedy, playwright Thomas Dekker wrote Four Birds of Noah’s Ark, a book containing fifty-six prayers for the people of London and all of England. Inventively organized into categories symbolized by four birds—Dove, Eagle, Pelican, and Phoenix—the prayers in this book bear witness to Dekker’s deep faith with a power and poignancy that few written prayers in English literature achieve. Bringing Dekker’s devotional classic back into print for the first time since 1924, editor Robert Hudson has annotated the prayers and modernized the language without sacrificing its enchanting beauty and simplicity. Hudson’s substantive and illuminating introduction is a gem in itself. “Happy the reader who discovers this prayer book by Thomas Dekker, who probably spent more time in debtors’ prison than in church but learned from both how to read the human heart. Dekker’s prayers—gently modernized and engagingly introduced by Robert Hudson—make a rich collection of praise, petition, lament, and thanksgiving wrapped up in an irresistible wit.” — Carol Zaleski
Smith College
“Beautifully crafted, filled with human goodness and biblical truth, these are more than prayers: they are meditations, devotions, and little lessons on what it means to be human and utterly dependent upon God. This is a volume I will return to again and again.” — Karen Swallow Prior author of Booked: Literature in the Soul of Me

“All my denials finally reached their expiration date. It was the summer of 2007. My wife and I separated; she and our children moved back to Texas to live with her parents. Over the next twelve months, my life was punctuated with a series of funerals: the seminary job, the teaching career, the ministry, countless friendships, and finally my marriage—all entombed. Every few weeks, my shovel dug a fresh grave. And with each burial, my ability to exist in ongoing denial weakened. At first it all seemed like a dream—a nightmarish dream, but still a dream—but I was gradually waking up. “Finally, one day, I did. “This awakening happened worlds away from the life I had known. It was in the cab of a Mack truck, in the oil fields of the Texas Panhandle, in the dead of night.” CHAD BIRD (from chapter 3, “Where the Hell Are You, God?”) 4

Night Driving
Notes from a Prodigal Soul Chad Bird Journeys that begin in brokenness rarely follow a straight road to healing. There are twists and turns— and setbacks—on the path of repentance. Night Driving tells the story of a pastor and seminary professor whose moral failures destroyed his marriage and career, left his life in ruins, and sent him spiraling into a decade-long struggle against God. Forced to fight the demons of his past in the cab of the semitruck he drove at night through the Texas oil fields, Chad Bird slowly began to limp toward grace and healing. Drawing on his expertise as an Old Testament scholar, Bird weaves together his own story, the biblical story, and the stories of fellow sinners as he peels back the layers of denial, anger, addiction, and grief to help readers come face to face with their own identities— and with the God who alone can heal them. “It is not clear to me why God meets us uniquely in pain. It is only clear that he does. In Night Driving Chad Bird gives us an unsparing look at the desperate and unpretty human need for God through the lens of his own journey. We are shepherds of darkness and stewards of scars. If you’re having problems finding God in your life, you may find him here.” — John Ortberg

“All too infrequently, into our sweet and tidy churchiness, comes a book of such amazing transparency, hope, precision, beauty, and glorious messiness that it shakes us from our lethargic self-justification. . . . Chad’s book is just such a gem.” — Elyse Fitzpatrick

“Like novelist John Updike, I’ve especially appreciated Barth’s ‘frank supernaturalism.’ It’s the Barthian theme that has most attracted me, and it’s the main reason I decided to write a biography that, I trust, will entice others to read Barth. . . . “No question that Barth’s theology can be dangerous at times, that it sometimes goes too fast for its own good. Then again, if you want to travel the vast country of God’s grace and get a sweeping view of the wonder of God’s mercy in Jesus Christ, there are few theologians better equipped to help you travel those exquisite highways.”

Love Big, Be Well
Letters to a Small-Town Church Winn Collier How can we live well in the particular, everyday places of our lives? Jonas McAnn is a weary pastor without a congregation, trapped in a dead-end insurance job. Granby Presbyterian is a weary congregation without a pastor, overwhelmed by the task of finding someone who actually wants to be a pastor—and not a manager, coach, or CEO. When Granby’s pastoral search committee and Jonas connect via handwritten letters passed back and forth, something sparks between them—something so real and refreshing that even after Jonas and his family move to Granby, he continues the regular practice of writing letters to his congregation. Spanning seven years of his ministry at Granby Presbyterian, Jonas’s letters ruminate on everything from fly-fishing to the Nicene Creed. They reveal an earthy spirituality woven into the people’s joys and sorrows. Readers will discover what it means for a pastor and a church to do the slow work of ministry in community—anchored by a common place and buoyed by a life of faith that is meaningful, rooted, and true. “There are some stories so well written, so layered with meaning, so humble and true, that they should be read, reread, and reread again. Winn Collier has written that kind of story.” — Seth Haines
author of Coming Clean: A Story of Faith
“Love Big, Be Well is a welcome mat, a handwritten invitation, a gigantic wrap-around porch, a warm night filled with fireflies. There may not be a surefire formula for living a wideopen, hope-filled life, but this collection of earnest words comes very close.” — Deidra Riggs

How to Become a Multicultural Church Douglas J. Brouwer Foreword by Wesley Granberg-Michaelson Many churches aspire to be more culturally diverse but don't know how exactly to realize that goal. This book addresses that problem by fleshing out ten ways that churches can truly engage and welcome other cultures. In 2014 Douglas Brouwer, a seasoned American pastor, took on the unique challenge of serving a multiethnic, multiracial, multicultural church in one of Europe’s largest cities. In this book Brouwer distills the lessons he has learned from that experience, offering timely wisdom on such issues as language barriers, theological differences, and cultural stereotypes. Honestly recounting his own questions and challenges in multicultural ministry, Brouwer shows how churches everywhere can adjust their attitudes and practices to embrace different kinds of diversity and worship together as God’s people. “An invitation to see anew in ministry.” — Mark R. Gornik
City Seminary of New York
“In an age when diversity can be demonized, Doug Brouwer reveals its beauty as the heart of the gospel and the embodiment of the kingdom of God on earth. Through his rich pastoral experience, particularly at the beloved IPC, he reveals the joys, frustrations, and gifts that emerge in a multicultural congregation. He is an honest, seasoned, and wise guide who will fill readers with the hope that Pentecost is still possible today.” — Luke A. Powery

“This book is not some ‘how to’ manual for tinkering with congregational life but, rather, a survival guide for congregational witness in today’s world.” — Wesley Granberg-Michaelson

Stay in the City
How Christian Faith Is Flourishing in an Urban World Mark R. Gornik and Maria Liu Wong Foreword by Timothy Keller We live in an urban age. To a degree unprecedented in human history, most of the world’s people live in cities.
It is thus vital, say Mark Gornik and Maria Liu Wong, for Christians to think constructively about how to live out their faith in an urban setting. In Stay in the City Gornik and Liu Wong look at what is happening in the urban church—and what Christians everywhere can learn from it. Once viewed suspiciously for their worldly temptations and vices, cities are increasingly becoming centers of vibrant Christian faith. Writing from their experience living and working in New York City, Gornik and Liu Wong invite readers everywhere to join together in creating a more flourishing—and faith-filled—urban world. “This book is for those who are living, seeking to live, and hoping to sustain, lives of joy and purpose in the city through practices that undergird thriving faith in a 24/7 urban world. Whether in a changing neighborhood where new restaurants and creative businesses are arriving, in a community where lives are always in the balance, or in a place of prime real estate and executive offices, the vocation of urban Christians begins with being and staying present to God in the local context, attending to what is in front of us with all of our senses. Ministry is theology ‘on the ground,’ asking and answering the complex questions of faith and life, work and home in a dynamic, constantly changing urban world.” — from the introduction, “Waiting for the Spirit” Mark R. Gornik is director of City Seminary of New York and the author of Word Made Global: Stories of African Christianity in New York City and To Live in Peace: Biblical Faith and the Changing Inner City. Maria Liu Wong is dean of City Seminary of New York.

Incarnational Ministry Being with the Church Samuel Wells
With may be the most important word in the Christian faith. In the Trinity, as Samuel Wells points out, we see the eternal persons of the Godhead being with each other. In the Gospels we see Jesus being with the people he encounters, mediating God’s grace to them with his own incarnational presence. Those in ministry are likewise called to the task of being with—with God, with the church, and with the created world and those who dwell in it. In Incarnational Ministry Wells elaborates on the concept of being with in eight dimensions: presence, attention, mystery, delight, participation, partnership, enjoyment, and glory. His vivid narratives and wise reflections will challenge readers to deeper discipleship and more vital ministry as they explore what it means to be with the troubled, the hurt, the afflicted, the challenged, the dying—and all who are embraced by the church’s incarnational ministry. “Sam Wells, one of the finest priest-theologians of our time, weaves together deep theology with the practical heart and skill of a pastor. This book is a must-read and a challenge for all who want to grow in their understanding and practice of being Christians together, following the God who chose to journey with us in Jesus.” — Justin Welby Archbishop of Canterbury
“In this beautiful volume Sam Wells lays out a path for us to become more fully present to God, self, others, and creation. Using the phrase ‘being with,’ Wells guides readers to take up a truly incarnational stance that is fundamental to the way of Christ.” — Elaine Heath

Confess Your Sins The Way of Reconciliation Foreword by Ray Ortlund
Between Two Worlds
“We need to gain in the church today a clearer view of God’s revealed ideal for the preacher,” says Stott in his introduction to The Preacher’s Portrait. To that end, he presents brief studies of five words used in the New Testament to describe preachers and their task: steward, herald, witness, father, and servant. In the course of these five studies, Stott considers the message and authority of preachers, the character of their proclamation, the vital necessity of their own experience with the gospel, and their motives and moral qualities. Together, these five New Testament words reveal the preacher’s portrait, says Stott—“a portrait painted by the hand of God himself on the broad canvas of the New Testament.”
“Preaching is indispensable to Christianity.” Renowned preacher John Stott opens this book with those five bold words. He maintains, further, that “nothing is better calculated to restore health and vitality to the church than a recovery of true, biblical, contemporary preaching.” Indeed, Stott was aiming to foster such a recovery when he wrote Between Two Worlds. The genius of this book is the way it synthesizes and distills Stott’s wealth of wisdom on preaching, focusing not so much on technical matters but more on theological foundations and on necessary personal characteristics of the preacher—sincerity, earnestness, courage, and humility. Preachers old and new will continue to find much to chew on in these pages.
Five New Testament Word Studies
Here is timeless wisdom on a neglected Christian practice. Though the Bible clearly teaches that confession is necessary, many Christians are uncertain how and to whom they should confess their sins. Identifying and examining three types of confession, Stott gives vital assurance and guidance in Confess Your Sins: The Way of Reconciliation. “An excellent biblical, historical, and practical treatment of the subject from which all Christians will profit.” — Carl R. Trueman Westminster Theological Seminary
“If the wisdom so ably offered in Confess Your Sins is heeded in our churches, the power of true reconciliation will feel like heaven on earth!” — Ray Ortlund Immanuel Church, Nashville

Forbearance
A Theological Ethic for a Disagreeable Church James Calvin Davis Offers a faithful, constructive way to deal with dissent What happens when we approach disagreement not as a problem to solve but as an opportunity to practice Christian virtue? This book by James Calvin Davis reclaims the biblical concept of forbearance to develop a theological ethic for faithful disagreement. Pointing to Ephesians and Colossians, in which Paul challenged his readers to “bear with each other” in spite of differences, Davis argues that the practice of forbearance offers Christians a dignified, graceful, and constructive way to deal with conflict. “Forbearance—an old-fashioned word, perhaps, but if ever we needed to recover its use, now is the time. Our politics and economics, our communities and churches, and even our families are fractured by polarizing disagreements that often grow into debilitating conflicts. In this discerning book James Calvin Davis deftly narrates the meanings, spirit, power, and practice of ‘bearing with one another’ as a fundamental Christian civic virtue.” — Craig Dykstra Duke Divinity School

Groody, CSC In all the noisy rhetoric currently surrounding immigration, one important question is rarely asked: What ethical responsibilities do immigrants and citizens have to each other? In this book Tisha Rajendra reframes the confused and often heated debate over immigration around the world, proposes a new definition of justice based on responsibility to relationships, and develops a Christian ethic to address this vexing social problem. “A creative contribution to the urgent ethical challenges raised by migration today. Drawing on social analysis and Christian thought, Tisha Rajendra shows that treating migrants justly will require rethinking and reshaping the social, political, and economic relationships that set the context for the movement of people today. Essential reading for all concerned with ethics and migration.” — David Hollenbach, SJ
Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University
“What a joy to find wisdom and reason brought to bear on this contentious issue! Using case studies to illustrate the complexities of immigration, Rajendra exposes flaws in common narratives about immigrants. . . . This is a must-read book not only for those who are interested in immigration policy but also for anyone searching for an adequate theory of justice in our complex world.” — Karen Lebacqz author of Six Theories of Justice
“In tackling the pressing social issue of immigration reform, Rajendra’s Migrants and Citizens exposes and reforms our understanding of who we really are as human beings. A prophetic and revealing work.” — Paul Louis Metzger

Calling All Years Good
Christian Vocation throughout Life's Seasons Kathleen A. Cahalan and Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore, editors A uniquely comprehensive discussion of vocation from infancy to old age Do infants have a vocation? Do Alzheimer’s patients? In popular culture, vocation is often reduced to adult work or church ministry. Rarely do we consider childhood or old age as crucial times for commencing or culminating a life of faith in response to God’s calling. This book addresses that gap by showing how vocation emerges and evolves over the course of an entire lifetime. The authors cover six of life’s distinct seasons, weaving together personal narrative, developmental theory, case studies, and spiritual practices. Calling All Years Good grounds the discussion of vocation in concrete realities and builds a cohesive framework for understanding calling throughout all of life. “These chapters widen our vocational vision beyond that crucial time of young adulthood in order to contemplate the many ways God calls each of us at every moment of our lives. I know of no other book that takes such a serious and sustained look at the life stages of vocation.” — Edward P. Hahnenberg

Saved by Faith and Hospitality Joshua W. Jipp
Foreword by Christine D. Pohl
Too few Christians today, says Joshua Jipp, understand hospitality to strangers and the marginalized as an essential part of the church’s identity. In this book he argues that God’s relationship to his people is fundamentally an act of hospitality to strangers; divine and human hospitality lie at the very heart of the biblical message and Christian faith. “A wonderfully succinct, substantive, and engaging treatment. . . . Jipp brings to life a fascinating and fruitful conversation between the ancient biblical texts and our current challenges.” — Christine D. Pohl (from the foreword) author of Making Room: Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition
“Points toward the possibility of a church that is not drenched in the un-Christian characteristic of irrational xenophobia but instead follows in the footsteps of Jesus’s hospitality."

Church in Ordinary Time A Wisdom Ecclesiology Amy Plantinga Pauw
Much of Christian theology is focused on the story of Jesus and the promised consummation of all things—but the church exists in the gap between them. How can we live more faithfully as Christians between Christ’s resurrection and the eschaton? In this book Amy Plantinga Pauw presents a compact Trinitarian ecclesiology, drawing particularly on Job, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes, and argues that the liturgical season of ordinary time aptly symbolizes the church’s existence as God’s creature in this time between the times. “Beautifully framed and written, this is an ecclesiology that matters. Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Liturgical Studies
The Theater of God’s Glory Calvin, Creation, and the Liturgical Arts W. David O. Taylor
“At a time when Protestant treatments of the arts tend to be marked by excessive shame and breast-beating, studies like this remind us of treasures easily overlooked. For some, Calvin would be the last theologian from whom we might expect wisdom on the liturgical arts. But David Taylor, with exemplary skill and clarity, shows us otherwise. This is an immensely important study from one of the key leaders in theology and the arts today.” — Jeremy Begbie Duke University
“David Taylor’s extraordinary study of Calvin and the liturgical arts consistently surprises and delights. Its greatest strengths are its command of Calvin’s full works, not just the Institutes, and its ability to think with Calvin but far beyond his self-imposed strictures. The result is a more profoundly incarnational Calvin and a more deeply scriptural rendering of the liturgical arts.” — Samuel Wells St. Martin-in-the-Fields

Women’s Voices and the Practice of Preaching Nancy Lammers Gross Foreword by Lillian Daniel
Many women preachers and worship leaders have trouble speaking; they struggle to fully use their physical voices. Maintaining that there is often a disconnect between a woman’s self-understanding as a preacher and her own body, Nancy Lammers Gross presents not only techniques but also a theologically empowering paradigm shift to help women fully embody their God-given preaching vocations. “This is a stunning book by one of the finest teachers of our generation of preachers. In a voice both clear and compassionate Nancy Lammers Gross says what most needs to be said about and for women preachers. The effect is stunning. Stunningly helpful. Stunningly powerful. Among the Ashes On Death, Grief, and Hope William J. Abraham
Foreword by Nicholas Wolterstorff
How can we hold fast to the hope of life eternal when we lose someone we love? In this beautiful book William Abraham reflects profoundly on death and hope in the face of devastating grief. Beginning with a stark account of his own grief after his oldest son unexpectedly died, Abraham draws on the book of Job, looks at the significance of grief in debates about the problem of evil, probes what Christianity teaches about life after death, and ultimately relates our experiences of grief to the death of Christ. “This is a deeply honest book. Abraham does not shirk from saying that though we have no theological explanation for the untimely death of children, we nonetheless have ground for hope. Readers will find this honesty refreshing and consoling.” — Nicholas Wolterstorff (from the foreword) William J. Reading Paul with the Reformers Reconciling Old and New Perspectives Stephen J. Chester Foreword by John M. G. Barclay
“For a scholarly generation, students of Paul have confidently treated the sixteenthcentury Reformers as Paul’s ‘misinterpreters-in-chief.’ Now Stephen Chester’s patient and learned treatment of the Reformers’ Pauline exegesis exposes both their thoughtfulness and their potential as wise conversation partners in the present. This is a major contribution to Pauline study.” — Beverly Roberts Gaventa Baylor University

Chester here displays remarkable learning, touching on historical fields most New Testament scholars know hardly anything about. In the Beauty of Holiness Art and the Bible in Western Culture David Lyle Jeffrey
Beautifully illustrated work from an eminent authority on the Bible, art, and culture Beauty is a highly significant subject in the Bible. So is holiness. In this study of Christian fine art David Lyle Jeffrey explores the relationship between beauty and holiness as he integrates aesthetic perspectives from the ancient Hebrew Scriptures through Augustine, Aquinas, and Kant down to contemporary philosophers of art. Incorporating sample artworks ranging from the Roman catacombs to Marc Chagall, Jeffrey demonstrates that the Bible has consistently been the most profound and productive resource for the visual arts in the West. He contextualizes Western European art from the second century through the twenty-first in relation not only to the biblical narrative but also to liturgy and historical theology. Lavishly illustrated throughout with 146 masterworks, reproduced in full color, In the Beauty of Holiness is ideally suited to students of Christian fine art and to general readers wanting to better understand the story of Christian art. “David Jeffrey here provides a visual theology of the beauty of holiness through a richly illustrated selection of Christian art stretching over the whole of Christian history. Whether that story is unknown or familiar to readers, all will come away instructed and inspired by this cornucopia of imagery.” — William Dyrness Fuller Theological Seminary

The Letter to Philemon Scot McKnight
Paul’s letter to Philemon carries a strong message of breaking down social barriers and establishing new realities of conduct and fellowship. It is also a disturbing text that has been used to justify slavery. Though brief, Philemon requires close scrutiny. In this commentary Scot McKnight offers careful textual analysis of Philemon and brings the practice of modern slavery into conversation with the ancient text. Too often, McKnight says, studies of this short letter gloss over the issue of slavery—an issue that must be recognized and dealt with if Christians are to read Philemon faithfully. Pastors and scholars will find in this volume the insight they need to preach and teach this controversial short book in meaningful new ways. “McKnight makes this small letter stand tall among the writings of the Pauline corpus. Jesus the Eternal Son
Answering Adoptionist Christology Michael F. Bird Foreword by Richard Bauckham
Adoptionism—the idea that Jesus is portrayed in the Bible as a human figure who was adopted as God’s Son at his baptism or resurrection—has been commonly accepted in much recent scholarship as the earliest explanation of Jesus’s divine status. In this book Michael Bird draws that view into question with a thorough examination of pre-Pauline materials, the Gospel of Mark, and patristic sources. “An engagingly written, well-researched, and persuasive challenge to a modern (and ancient) adoptionist reading of early Christianity. As one expects from Michael Bird, this book displays his wide-ranging command of relevant disciplines and his respectful engagement with a variety of views.” — Craig S. Jesus Followers in the Roman Empire Paul B. Duff
Foreword by Margaret Mitchell
When Jesus of Nazareth began proclaiming the kingdom of God early in the first century, he likely had no intention of starting a new religion. Yet a new religion did eventually develop—one that not only included non-Jews but was soon dominated by them. How did this happen? Jesus Followers in the Roman Empire by Paul Duff offers an accessible and informed account of Christian origins, beginning with the teaching of Jesus and moving to the end of the first century. Duff’s narrative shows how the rural Jewish movement led by Jesus developed into a largely non-Jewish phenomenon permeating urban centers of the Roman Empire. Paying special attention to social, cultural, and religious contexts—as well as to early Christian ideas about idolatry, marriage, family, slavery, and ethnicity— Duff ’s study will help readers cultivate a deeper understanding of the identity, beliefs, and practices of early Christ-believers. Paul B. Duff is professor of religion at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He is also the author of Who Rides the Beast? Prophetic Rivalry and the Rhetoric of Crisis in the Churches of the Apocalypse and Paul in Corinth: The Apologetic Context of 2 Corinthians 3. The Urban World and the First Christians Steve Walton, Paul R. Trebilco, and David W. J. Gill, editors
In the tradition of The First Urban Christians by Wayne Meeks, this book explores the relationship between the earliest Christians and the city environment. The authors first look at how the urban physical, cultural, and social environments of the ancient Mediterranean basin affected the ways in which early Christianity progressed. They then turn to how the earliest Christians thought and theologized in their engagement with cities. With a rich variety of expertise and scholarship, The Urban World and the First Christians is an important contribution to the understanding of early Christianity. Contributors: Piotr Ashwin-Siejkowski, Cédric Brélaz, Paul Cloke, David W. J. Gill, David G. Horrell, Chris Keith, Anthony Le Donne, Jutta Leonhardt-Balzer, Helen Morris, Ian Paul, Volker Rabens, Anders Runesson, Matthew Sleeman, Joan Taylor, Paul R. Trebilco, Steve Walton, Wei Hsien Wan. Steve Walton is professor in New Testament at St. Mary’s University, Twickenham (London). Paul R. Trebilco is professor of New Testament studies at the University of Otago, New Zealand. David W. J. Gill is professor of archaeological heritage and director of heritage futures at the University of Suffolk.

Hope and Community
A Constructive Christian Theology for the Pluralistic World, Volume 5 Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen This fifth and final installment in Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen’s ambitious five-volume systematic theology develops a constructive Christian eschatology and ecclesiology in dialogue with the Christian tradition, with contemporary theology in all its global and contextual diversity, and with other major living faiths—Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. “A fitting finale to a remarkable tour de force of systematic theology, this volume exhibits the qualities we have come to appreciate in Kärkkäinen’s scholarship: it is comprehensive, relevant, respectful yet critical of Christian tradition, and engaging of global and interreligious realities.” — Adonis Vidu Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary
Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen is professor of systematic theology at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California, and docent of ecumenics at the University of Helsinki, Finland. His many previous books include Christ and Reconciliation, Trinity and Revelation, Creation and Humanity, and Spirit and Salvation, which respectively comprise the first four volumes in A Constructive Christian Theology for the Pluralistic World.

Early Religious Writings, 1903–1909 Pavel Florensky
Translated by Boris Jakim
Eight profound writings by Pavel Florensky, one of the twentieth century’s greatest polymaths—most of them presented in English translation for the first time. Splendidly interweaving religious, scientific, and literary themes, these essays showcase the diversity of Florensky’s broad learning and interests. The volume concludes with “The Salt of the Earth,” arguably Florensky’s most spiritually moving work. Pavel Florensky (1882–1937) was one of the preeminent Russian Orthodox thinkers of the twentieth century. His best-known work is The Pillar and Ground of Truth: An Essay in Orthodox Theodicy in Twelve Letters. Theology June • 978-0-8028-7495-5 6" × 9" paperback 240 pages • $35.00 [£29.99]

Studies in the History of Christian Missions
Race and Redemption
British Missionaries Encounter Pacific Peoples, 1797–1920 Jane Samson In this historical examination of the encounter between British missionaries and people in the Pacific Islands, Jane Samson reveals the paradoxical yet symbiotic nature of the two stances that the missionaries adopted—“othering” and “brothering.” Arguing that gender was as important a category in the story as race, Samson paints a complex picture of the interactions between missionaries and native peoples—and the ways in which perspectives shaped by those encounters have endured. Elephant Baseball A Missionary Kid’s Tale Paul Heusinkveld
“Heusinkveld really did play elephant baseball—but his memoir evokes something far more exotic, a magical stepping back into a childhood spent at an American missionary school, Kodaikanal, cloistered at 7,000 feet in the misty mountains of South India. Heusinkveld writes with a heartache for a time and place that no longer exists, but along the way he explores his own identity and grapples with an unthinkable tragedy.” — Kai Bird

Growing Pains
How Racial Struggles Changed a Church and a School Christopher H. Meehan This book tells the painful story of integrating Timothy Christian School in suburban Chicago during the turbulent 1960s and the subsequent creation of Chicago West Side Christian School, a “beacon of reconciliation.” “If we are to ever build Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of the ‘beloved community,’ people interested in reconciliation must be willing to truthfully confront past epochs of racial injustice. Growing Pains represents a compelling step in that direction.” — Mark Mulder
