Before You Begin

Read all instructions before beginning project. Do not pre-wash fabrics. Press fabrics with a dry iron on cotton setting before cutting. Use a ¼" (6.35 mm) seam allowance and sew fabrics with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise noted. Press seams in the direction of the arrows. wof = width of fabric

Note: A printed panel may become slightly skewed during the finishing process. Check if panel is square before cutting by folding the panel so selvages meet. If all edges do not meet, pull firmly from corner to corner until the edges meet. Continue until all corners are square.

Use a rotary cutter and ruler to cut the size and number of squares and rectangles from each fabric listed below.

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of a Rays of Light square 3 in x 3 in (7.62 cm x 7.62 cm) as shown in Diagram A. Place on top of a Beauty in Flight square 3 in x 3 in (7.62 cm x 7.62 cm) RST and sew ¼ in (6.35 mm) away from the line on both sides. Cut on the drawn line; press. Two squares yield two Half-Square Triangle Units. Repeat to make a total of 16 Half-Square Triangle Units measuring 2 ½ in x 2 ½ in (6.35 cm x 6.35 cm). Trim if necessary.

2. Place one Floral Treasure square, four Rays of Light squares, and four Half-Square Triangle Units 2 ½ in x 2 ½ in (6.35 cm x 6.35 cm) in three rows as shown in Diagram B. Pin the pieces in each row RST, sew and press. Pin the rows RST matching seams, sew and press to make a Friendship Star Block 6 ½ in x 6 ½ in (16.51 cm x 16.51 cm). Make four.

3. Place a Friends of the Forest square 2 ½ in x 2 ½ in (6.35 cm x 6.35 cm) on each side of a Rays of Light square 2 ½ in x 2 ½ in (6.35 cm x 6.35 cm) as shown in Diagram C. Note: Check the direction of the designs. Pin RST, sew and press. Place a Friends of Forest rectangle 2 ½ in x 6 ½ in (6.35 cm x 16.51 cm) on the top and bottom. Pin RST, sew and press to make the Square-in-aSquare Block finishing at 6 ½ in x 6 ½ in (16.51 cm x 16.51 cm). Make 4 in a horizontal direction and 4 in a vertical direction for a total of 8.

4. Place a Beauty in Flight rectangle 2 ½ in x 22 ½ in (6.35 cm x 57.15 cm) on each side of a Rays of Light rectangle 2 ½ in x 22 ½ in (6.35 cm x 57.15 cm) as shown in Diagram D. Pin RST, sew and press to make Border Unit A finishing at 6 ½ in x 22 ½ in (16.51 cm x 57.15 cm). Repeat to make two.

5. Place a Beauty in Flight rectangle 2 ½ in x 30 ½ in (6.35 cm x 77.47 cm) on each side of a Rays of Light rectangle 2 ½ in x 30 ½ in (6.35 cm x 77.47 cm) as shown in Diagram E. Pin RST, sew and press to make Border Unit B finishing at 6 ½ in x 30 ½ in (16.51 cm x 77.47 cm). Make two.

6. Place a Friendship Star Block and a Square-in-a-Square Horizontal Block 6 ½ in x 6 ½ in (16.51 cm x 16.51 cm) on each end of Border Unit A 6 ½ in x 22 ½ in (16.51 cm x 57.15 cm) as shown in Diagram F, aligning the seams as shown. Pin, sew and press to make the Top Border finishing at 6 ½ in x 46 ½ in (16.51 cm x 118.11 cm). Repeat to make the Bottom Border.

7. Place a Square-in-a-Square Horizontal Block 6 ½ in x 6 ½ in (16.51 cm x 16.51 cm) on each end of a Border Unit B 6 ½ in x 30 ½ in (16.51 cm x 77.47 cm) as shown in Diagram G, aligning the seams as shown. Pin, sew and press to make the Side Border 6 ½ in x 42 ½ in (16.51 cm x 107.95 cm). Repeat to make two.

8. Refer to Diagram H to finish the Quilt Top:

a. Place a Floral Treasure strip 1 ½ in x 40 ½ in (3.81 cm x 102.87 cm) on each side of the Panel rectangle 32 ½ in x 40 ½ in (82.55 cm x 102.87 cm). Pin RST matching ends and middles; sew and press.

Finishing

9. Remove the selvages from the Bubbles Backing fabric. Note: Check orientation of design. Cut one piece 40 1⁄4 in x 63 in (102.24 cm x 160.02 cm) and two pieces 15 1⁄4 in x 31 ¾ in (38.74 cm x 80.65 cm). Pin RST and sew the two smaller pieces on the short edges; press. Pin the two sections RST and sew along the long edges as shown in Diagram I. Press the seam open or to one side. The Backing should measure 55 in x 63 in (139.7 cm x 160.02 cm).

10. Press finished Quilt Top and Backing. Tape the Backing, wrong side up, to a firm surface. Layer Batting and Quilt Top (right side up). Baste the layers together with safety pins. Quilt as desired.

11. Once quilting is complete, square up corners and edges, trimming excess Backing and Batting even with the Quilt Top.

12. Binding – Follow Diagram J to make the Binding from the Wings print. Remove selvages and sew the short ends of the five 2 ½ in x wof (6.35 cm x wof) strips RST end to end at a 45˚ angle to make one continuous strip; press seams open. Press one short end ¼ in (6.35 mm) to the wrong side. Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press. Leaving a 2 in (5.08 cm) tail on the folded end, place cut edges of folded Binding even with the edge of the Quilt Top and sew, mitering the corners. Overlap ends, trim any excess and finish sewing the Binding. Fold Binding over to back and hand stitch.
