PIECING (NOTE: refer to the Assembly Layout on p.7 as well as the cover page for fabric placement)

For the Table Runner:

1. Mark a diagonal line corner-to-corner on the Wrong Side of each of your Fabric A squares.

2. Place (1) Fabric A square over (1) Fabric B square, right sides facing. Sew a seam on either side of the marked line at 1/4”.

3. Cut along the marked line. Open up the fabrics and press seams open. Yields (2) half square triangles (HSTs). Trim to 3-1/2” X 3-1/2”.

4. Repeat Steps 1-3 with the remaining Fabric A and B squares. You will have 64 HSTs in total.

5. Sew 16 HSTs together, from left to right, to create Row 1, paying careful attention to the orientation of each HST.

6. Repeat Step 5 to create Rows 2, 4, & 5. Again, pay careful attention to the orientation of each HST.

7. Sew the (2) Fabric A sashing strips together, end to end, to create Row 3.

8. Sew all Rows together, from top to bottom, to create the center piece.

Center Piece

9. Sew (2) top border strips together, end to end. Sew this border to the top of the center piece.

10. Sew (2) remaining border pieces together, end to end, and sew this border to the bottom of the center piece.

11. Sew (1) side border piece to either side of the center piece. This completes your Table Runner top.

For the Placemats

12. Follow Steps 1-3 to make 64 HSTs with the Fabric A and B squares you cut for the placemat. NOTE: these squares are smaller than the ones cut for the Table Runner and will yield HSTs that you will need to trim to 2-7/8” X 2-7/8”. You will need 16 HSTs for each palcemat.

ASSEMBLY

13. Sew two HSTs together, top to bottom, as shown below, paying attention to the orientation of each one. Repeat to make (4).

14. Sew two more HSTs together, top to bottom, as shown below, paying attention to the orientation of each one. Repeat to make (4).

16. Create Row 3 in the same manner, paying attion to the orientation of each piece.

17. Sew rows 1-3 together, from top to bottom, to create the placemat center piece.

Center Piece

15. Referring to the assembly layout on p. 7, sew together 4 pieces created in Steps 13 & 14 and two Fabric A rectangles, from left to right, to create Row 1. Row 1

Row 2 (sashing) Row 3

18. Sew (1) side border strip to either side of the center piece.

19. Sew the top and bottom border pieces to the center piece. This completes one placemat. Repeat Steps 13-19 to make three more placemats.
