-needle and coordinating thread

-20”x 20“ piece of batting

-18” x 18“ pillow form

NOTES

-For best results, read through all instructions before starting.

-Please wash, dry & iron your fabrics before beginning, and trim selvedges.

-Unless otherwise indicated, sew all seams with a 1/4” seam allowance.

-Press your seams open as you go.

-WOF = width of fabric

CUTTING

Fabric A

Cut (1) 6-1/2” x WOF strip. Sub-cut:

-(2) 6-1/2” x 6-1/2” squares. These will be referred to as piece (a).

-Sub-cut remaining strip to 3-1/2”. Sub-cut:

-(4) 3-1/2” x 3-1/2” squares. These will be referred to as piece (b).

Cut (2) 3-1/2” x WOF strips. Sub-cut:

-(2) 12-1/2 x 3-1/2” rectangles. These will be referred to as piece (c).

-(2) 3-1/2” x 18-1/2” rectangles. These will be referred to as piece (d).

Cut (1) 12“ X WOF strip. Sub-cut:

-(2) 18-1/2” x 12“ rectangles. These will be for the pillow back.

Cut (3) 2-1/2” x WOF strips. Set aside for binding.

Fabric B

Cut (1) 6-1/2” x WOF strip. Sub-cut:

-(2) 6-1/2” x 12-1/2” rectangles. These will be referred to as piece (e).

Fabric C

Cut (1) 20” x 20” square. This will be used as backing for the pillow top.

PIECING (NOTE: refer to the Assembly Layout on p.5 for fabric placement

Making the Heart

1. Mark a diagonal line corner-to-corner on the Wrong Side of each of the (a) & (b) pieces.

2. Place (1) piece (b) on the upper left hand corner of (1) piece (e), Right Sides Facing. Sew the (2) pieces together along the marked line.

3. Trim the excess fabric 1/4” outside of the stitch line and press the seam open.

4. Repeat Steps 2-3 with a second piece (b), this time sewing it to the top right-hand corner of piece (e). Repeat to make a second unit.

5. Repeat Steps 2-3 to sew a piece (a) to the lower left-hand corner of one of the pieces created in Step 4.

6. Trim the excess fabric 1/4” outside of the stitch line and press the seam open.

7. Repeat Step 5 to sew a piece (a) to the lower right-hand corner of the second piece created in Step 4.

8. Sew the two rectangles created in Steps 6 & 7 to gether to make the heart. Press seams open.

9. Sew one piece (c) to the top of the heart unit and one to the bottom, as shown.

10. Sew one piece (d) to either side of the unit created in Step 9, as shown.

Pillow top measures 18-1/2” x 18-1/2”

ASSEMBLY

Quilting the Pillow Front:

11. Layer your white Fabric C backing piece, quilt batting and pillow front, with the batting in the center and the fabrics’ Right Sides facing out.

12. Baste & quilt as desired, and square up the pillow front to 18-1/2” x 18-1/2”.

Adding the Pillow Back: 13. Fold & press a 1/2” hem along (1) 18-1/2” edge of each Fabric A Backing piece. Fold a second time and press. Topstitch along the fold.

14. Place the pillow front on your work surface, Wrong Side facing up. Place one of the pillow back pieces on top of it, as shown, Right Side facing up (Note: the hemmed edge should be towards the center).

15. Place the second pillow back piece on the pillow front, as shown, Right Side facing up. Again, the hemmed edge is placed towards the center.

16.Pin and sew a seam around the perimeter of the pillow using a 1/8” seam allowance.

17. Join the Fabric A binding strips, end to end, and press seams open. Sew the binding to the pillowusing your favorite method.
