Block Assembly Star Blocks

1. Take (1) 6" square of White and (1) 6" square of print (we’re using Fabric A as an example) and place right sides together. Stitch around all four sides. 2. Using a ruler, line up the corners of your seams and cut along that line. You will end up with 2 large triangles. Without moving your pieces, line up the opposite corners of your seams with the ruler and cut along the line. You will now have 4 triangles.

3. Open each triangle up and press the seam open. Using your ruler, trim the blocks down to 3.75" squares.

4. Lay out your (4) half-square triangle units and (5) White 3-3/4” squares in a star shape, paying attention to the direction of the prints. Sew each row of squares together in strips, as indicated by the arrows, and press your seams open.

5. Sew the three rows together as shown and press open. Repeat this process for all (16) printed 6" squares to create (16) Star Blocks.

Accent Square Block 1. Piece a 3-3/4” Fabric I square with (2) 3-3/4” White squares as you did in Step 4 of the Star Block. 2. Sew the resulting 3-square unit between (2) 10-1/4” x 3-3/4” White rectangles as shown to complete the block. Make (9) Accent Square Blocks.

Constructing the Quilt Top 1. Sew the Star Blocks and Accent Blocks in rows with the 10-1/4” White Squares as shown, alternating between a Star or Accent Block and a White Square. Press your seams open. Make (4) White & Star Block rows, and (3) White & Accent Block rows.

2. Sew the rows together as shown. You can refer to the quilt illustration on page 1 for the arrangement of the Star Blocks, or change their order for your own interpretation of the quilt.

3. Sew the 1” strips of White together end to end. Sew (1) strip to the top edge of the quilt and another to the bottom edge and trim off the excess length. 4. Sew (1) White strip to each side of the quilt, including the ends of the strips sewn to the top and bottom edges. Trim the excess length and press the seams open.

Finishing the Quilt 1. Cut your 4-1/4 yards of backing fabric in half, equaling two pieces that are 76.5” long. Sew the pieces right sides together with a 1/2” seam along their long sides and press the seam open. 2. Center and lay the batting on top of the wrong side of the backing fabric. Center and lay the pieced quilt top on top of the batting, right side outward. Pin or baste the quilt sandwich using your preferred method for securing the layers. Quilt as desired. Square off your quilt and trim the excess edges. 3. Use your prefered method for binding - Heather Bailey’s continuous binding tutorial is a great one to use.
