Block identification

Note: Background is colored white in pattern instructions to provide clarity in showing how the blocks are constructed.

Constructing Block A

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) 4" x 4" Background square. Place square, right sides together, on (1) 4" x 4" Orange Check square. Sew 1/4" away from each side of drawn line. Cut along drawn line to yield (2) HST units. Open and press. Align diagonal seam of HST units against 45 degree angle line on quilting ruler, and trim units to measure 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" unfinished.

2. Use the method outlined in step 1 to make (2) HST units using (1) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Background and (1) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Red Dot squares. Square and trim units to measure 2" x 2" unfinished.

3. Sew together (2) step 2 units, (1) 2" x 2" Red Dot square, and (1) 2" x 2" Yellow Dot

make a 4-patch unit, as shown.

Constructing Block B

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Background square. Place square, right sides together, at a corner of (1) 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Red Dot rectangle. Sew on drawn line. Trim 1/4" away from sewn line. Open and press. Repeat with another 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Background square at the opposite corner of the same rectangle to make a flying-geese unit. Make a total of (2) units.

Constructing Block C

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) 3 1/2" 3 1/2" Background square. Place square, right sides together, on (1) 3 1/2" 3 1/2" Orange Check square. Sew 1/4" away from each side of drawn line. Cut along drawn line to yield (2) HST units. Open and press. Align diagonal seam of HST units against 45 degree angle line on quilting ruler, and trim units to measure 3" x 3" unfinished.

Make a total of (4) units. Sew together the units to make a pinwheel block.

Cut along drawn line to yield (2) HST units. Open and press. Align diagonal seam of HST units against 45 degree angle line on quilting ruler, and trim units to measure 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" unfinished. Make a total of (4) Lime Dot HST units. Repeat to make (4) Green Check HST units.

Note: Border strips are sewn with the shorter strips first to the opposite sides of quilt center, followed by the longer strips to the remaining opposite sides of quilt center.

1. Inner border #1. Background. (2) 1 1/2" x 24 1/2" strips, then (2) 1 1/2" x 26 1/2" strips.

2. Inner border #2. Teal Dot. (2) 1 1/2" x 26 1/2" strips, then (2) 1 1/2" x 28 1/2" strips.

3. Inner border #3. Referring to quilt image for block placement, sew together (7) B blocks to make a pieced column . Make (2) columns and sew to the left and right sides of quilt center. Then arrange and sew together (9) B blocks to make a pieced row. Note that one block in each row is rotated. Make (2) rows and sew to the top and bottom of quilt center.

4. Inner border #4. Background. (2) 1 1/2" x 36 1/2" strips, then (2) 1 1/2" x 38 1/2" strips.

7. Inner border #7. Teal Dot. (2) 1 1/2" x 50 1/2" strips, then (2) 1 1/2" x 52 1/2" strips.

8. Inner border #8. Referring to quilt image for block placement, sew together (13) B blocks to make a pieced column . Make (2) columns and sew to the left and right sides of quilt center. Then arrange and sew together (15) B blocks to make a pieced row. Note that one block in each row is rotated. Make (2) rows and sew to the top and bottom of quilt center.

9. Inner border #9. Teal Dot. (2) 1 1/2" x 60 1/2" strips, then (2) 1 1/2" x 62 1/2" strips.
