General Company Information
In 1990, LDH Scissors was founded in Shenzhen, just outside of Hong Kong, by a young couple who simply needed better quality sewing scissors. Built with Love, Dedication and Happiness, the company has been serving the sewing community ever since. Fast forward to 2018, their son Roy and his wife Ursula have brought the company to Toronto, Canada, bringing with them the same Love, Dedication and Happiness that made it all possible. LDH Scissors is also proud to be immigrant-, female-, and family-owned!
LDH scissors are handcrafted and hand-finished in our family’s factories in China. What this means for our scissors is that aside from a couple of steps that are done by machine for safety, the grinding, sharpening, assembly, and adjustment are all done by hand by our artisans. You can watch some of the scissor making process on our website.
Have you wondered what makes a good pair of fabric shears? We've got you covered. Here’s a compiled list of 5 points about what to look for in a great pair of shears.
Look at the tip. On your average pair of scissors, have you ever noticed the blade becoming less and less sharp the closer to the tip of the blades you cut? This is because most manufacturers usually don't care or neglect how sharp the end of the blades are. With our LDH scissors, the first part of the blade you should try cutting with is the tip.
Are the blades slightly concave? Often overlooked when purchasing scissors, a curved - or concave - shape on the inside of each blade gives you extra leverage to cut through thick and long materials. Most average scissors will have straight blades, which will cause friction between the blades and the fabric. Our professional fabric shears, including Midnight Edition Fabric Shears, have concave blades.
What's so important about the button? The button - or the pivot - has to be tight or loose enough for your personal preference. This is why it's so important to test the scissors, if possible before you purchase them. LDH scissors are industrial grade, ensuring that the button is loose enough to not tire the user after a long day of crafting! Please note we don’t recommend tightening the button without professional guidance.
The handle is what makes you feel at home! To bring home a great pair of scissors, you should ideally try the scissors. Listen to your hands, how do they feel? Our professional fabric shears feature painted handles and rubber handles, which both hug the hand comfortably.
How heavy are they? This is a tool that you will be spending a large amount of time with, getting to know every personal inch while you cut and sew. Make sure that the weight is to your liking and won't tire you out too quickly. Our 8" Midnight Edition Fabric Shears are designed for those who need a lighter pair of shears and want to protect their wrists! Not only are they lightweight, but they are also ultra-powerful and sharp!
The Heart of your Scissors is the Button!
The button is the heart of your scissor (and even your snips!) It holds the blades together, keeping the correct tension between the blades, allowing them to cut. When someone is starting to have issues with their scissors, one of the most common reasons we see is that they are being too rough when putting their scissors down on their table. When we do this, it’s the button that is taking most of the impact. This can cause short and long term issues, such as loss of tension, which can be permanent.
To best protect the button and your scissors, here’s what you should & shouldn’t be doing:
Store them somewhere safe.
One of the worst things that can happen to your scissors is that they fall onto a hard surface. If your scissors are from us, we recommend keeping them in their box. Otherwise, storing them in a drawer or hanging them up very securely is best!
Listen to your scissors!
If you’re struggling to cut something or struggling with too many layers, ease up on your scissors: misalignment issues from cutting materials or layers that your scissors can’t handle will cause misalignment issues with your button and blades.
Keep them clean.
One of the best ways to keep your scissors feeling smooth and cutting well is to keep the blades clean and free from little bits of fiber. Wiping the blades down with a piece of fabric and oiling your scissors periodically will keep your scissors performing at their best!

How to Oil Your Scissors
When and how often should you oil your scissors? We recommend oiling your scissors whenever they start to feel a little rough - you’ll know the feeling when it happens.
Here’s what you’ll need to oil your scissors:
• Your scissors, of course!
• A piece of scrap fabric.
• A small bowl with around a teaspoon of oil. You can use any oil you have, we’ve even used olive oil.
• A cutting mat.
We like to oil our tools on a cutting mat because they’re easy to wipe clean afterwards!
How to Oil Your Scissors:
Step 1 If your scissors are covered in bits of fiber, take your dry fabric piece and carefully wipe the blades down.
Step 2 Submerge and saturate your piece of fabric in the oil.
Step 3 Open your scissors so that you can access the inner part of the blades below the button and give it a good wipe with your oily fabric. Repeat on both sides of the scissor. Work the oil in by opening and closing your scissors a couple of times before moving on.
Keeping Your Scissors in Tip-Top Shape!
Be Mindful of the Materials You’re Cutting. It’s true: different materials can affect the blades of your scissors differently. Take, for example, cotton vs polyester. The natural fibers and weave in cotton are easier, or “softer”, for scissors to cut through than a plasticbased material like polyester and are therefore easier on your scissors. Synthetic fibers are “harder” and create pieces of fiber that can become more easily stuck in your scissors, especially around the button. While scissors can cut any material and will become dull at some point, it’s good to be aware of what could potentially be dulling your scissors faster!
Step 4 Use the fabric to oil the entire scissor, on the outside and inside of the blades, being careful on the sharp edges. When you oil the button of the scissor, don’t be afraid to really rub the oil in. The more oil you can get into the button, the smoother your scissor will be! If you’re using a thin piece of fabric, try sliding the edge of it into the space between the blades around the button.
Step 5 Store your scissors in the box they came with, on a flat surface, like a in drawer, or by hanging it up securely. We recommend leaving the oil on your scissors for a couple of hours, but the more time it gets to sit in and around the button, the better it will feel. If you want to use your scissors immediately, that’s not a problem! The next time you want to use your scissors, wipe off all of the oil with a piece of dry fabric and you’re good to go!
Pro tip!
Don’t throw out your oily piece of fabric, store it in a container for next time! A little oil will last a long time and won’t dry out.
Be Gentle.
Scissors, just like any other tool, are fragile and mishandling them can affect the way they cut. One of the most common and potentially damaging habits we see comes from simply placing scissors on a table too harshly. This can cause even brand new pairs of scissors to become chipped. Try to be mindful when placing your scissors down on any hard surface. Placing them down roughly, particularly on the button, can cause the blades of the scissor to become misaligned and loose from repeated impact. To reduce the chances of your scissors dropping to the floor, store them either in the box they came in or in another secure location.
How to change the blade on the 45mm Midnight Edition Rotary Cutter
The blade is protected by a “cage” so that it cannot be accessed without pushing the blade up or by removing the bolt, washer, and backing. When all of the pieces are removed, the blade can slide out of the cage without being touched.
Carefully slide a fresh blade into the cage, lining the openings of the blade and cutter up, and replace the bolt, washer, and backing, and tighten until comfortable to use. The washer is shaped like a bowl, with the sides turned upwards. It should be placed back on the cutter with the sides facing up and away from the cutter. More details are available below.
Step 1 Insert a new blade into the cage and put the bolt back into the rotary cutter. The bolt should always be inserted into the front of the cutter, where the button to slide the blade out is located.
Step 3 The backing can now be screwed onto the bolt. The flat side of the backing should face towards you when you screw it back on. You’ve now changed the blade!
Step 2 The rotary cutter can now be turned over to the back side, where the logo is located. The bolt needs to be held in place when putting the washer and backing on. Place the washer on the bolt, with the sides facing upwards, like a bowl, and the flat side placed against the cutter. The opening of the washer and the back of the bolt are shaped like a rectangle, so make sure the washer is placed on the bolt correctly.
Rotary Cutter Notes:
Using the cutter left-handed
This rotary cutter is designed to be used in either the left or right hand without needing to remove and switch the blade. All you need to do is switch the hand you are using the cutter in and turn the cutter so that the blade is on the correct side.
Trouble Shooting
The cutter won’t stay tightened: Check to see if the washer is installed correctly. Don’t tighten it too much or else the blade may not roll properly.
The blade guard is loose: The guard can be pressed back into the cutter to secure it.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is electroplating?
Electroplating fuses a metal coating on the scissors to create the desired colour - in our case, either black or rainbow.
2. Why are the shears so greasy?
We have applied oil to the blades and button to protect the scissors from rust during shipping and storage. The oil can be wiped off with a cloth before use. We also recommend customers apply oilsuch as sewing machine oil - to the scissors and button when not in use or when being stored for a long period of time.
3. What is the #1 tip for prolonging their lifespan?
Do not use your scissors when cutting nothing, as though testing the tightness or looseness of the blade (“air-cutting”). Ideally only use the scissors when cutting material. Our second tip is to store your tools properly, either in the box or bag they come in, or in a secure spot where they won’t fall on the floor.
4. What does the size mean?
The measurement you see - such as 8” - is the entire length of the scissor, including the handle.
5. How long will the scissors stay sharp?
This depends on a number of factors, such as how often they are being used and what kinds of materials are being cut. Keeping the blades clean of dust and fiber will prolong the lifespan of the blades. In general, the following applies:
• Synthetic fibers will dull blades faster than natural fibers.
• Fleece and faux fur are the hardest materials on scissors, regardless of how “high-end” your scissor is.
6. How do I hold the thread snips with the ring (Classic Stainless Steel Thread Snips, Midnight Edition Thread Snips, Prism Thread Snips)?
If you or your customer have never used this style of thread snip before, we recommend “wearing” them on your dominant hand, on your fourth finger, with the blades nestled in your palm (see right image).
7. The left-handed shears are catching on my fabric but there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the scissor!
Please note that many left-handed people have been using right-handed scissors with their left hand for the majority of their life. Our left-handed scissors are true left-handed scissors, so they may feel unfamiliar to someone who has never used them before and just takes a bit of practice to adjust to them. We recommend trying to hold the scissor as straight as possible when cutting.

Disclaimer and additional information
• If there is a manufacturing defect upon receiving your product(s), you must contact us within 48 hours.
• While stainless steel products will resist oxidation more than carbon steel products, they cannot be guaranteed against rusting.
• Due to the manufacturing process and the nature of our hand-finished scissors, some scissors may have superficial scratches that do not diminish the overall quality of the scissors but may not be as aesthetically pleasing. Please note that softer metals such as carbon steel are more prone to scratches. These scratches are a known feature that is not covered under our warranty. This is what we consider normal wear during our manufacturing process.
• Depending on the materials of your product(s), without mindful handling and daily maintenance, the blades could become chipped. This is what we considered normal wear and can be fixed by your local sharpener.
• If you have dropped or mishandled your scissors, or cut material beyond what they can reasonably handle, any resulting damage (such as chipped blades) or misalignment is not covered by our warranty.
