Finally, Ashridge Executive Education Professor Jean Vanhoegaerden will provide insight into how critical it is for organizations to be aware of and to understand cultural differences in order to work effectively in a global environment. ABOUT BOSTON In 1630, Puritan colonists from England founded Boston on the Shawmut Peninsula. During the late eighteenth century Boston was the location of several major events of the American Revolution, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. Several early battles of the American Revolution, such as the battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston, occurred within the city and surrounding areas. After American independence was attained Boston became a major shipping port and manufacturing center, and its rich history now attracts 16.3 million visitors annually. The city was the site of several firsts, including America’s first public school, Boston Latin School, and first college, Harvard College (1636), in neighboring Cambridge. Boston was also home to the first subway system in the United States. Today the City of Boston hosts over 12 million annual visitors from across the country and around the globe. This vibrant, thriving city is renowned for its cultural facilities, world-class educational institutions, champion sports franchises, as well as its place at the very forefront of American history. Sightseeing & Activities There is always plenty to do in Boston. Popular activities include walking tours of Harvard University and Quincy Market, Duck Tours and trips to the Museum of Fine Arts. If you are here for the weekend you can enjoy the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket; head south to Cape Cod’s lovely sea shore or the rocky coasts and islands of Maine. Boston is home to four major sports teams: the hockey team the Boston Bruins, baseball team

the Boston Red Sox who play in famous Fenway Park, basketball team the Boston Celtics and the American football team the New England Patriots. Boston shares many cultural roots with greater New England, including a regional cuisine with a large emphasis on seafood, rum, salt, and dairy products. Boston is also home to a wide variety of excellent restaurants from Italian cuisine in the North End to more eclectic fare in the South End.
