Case Study: Air China Air China is China’s flag-carrying airline and the most profitable airline in the world. Founded in 1988, Air China now has over 36,000 employees, 60 million domestic and international passengers and is a member of the Star Alliance. Air China’s need: Air China has recognized the rapid globalization of the Aviation industry and chose to embrace the English language to improve communication and service. Their expanding routes and entry into the Star Alliance created an immediate need for a large-scale language training program. EF’s solution: EF worked with Air China to quickly create a program to suit their business objectives in a truly collaborative partnership. Air China and EF worked together to design a training policy and study targets for an initial enrollment of over 1200 people in EF’s Online School, with teacher-led private and semi-private lessons. Now that the program is up and running, EF and Air China continue to work together to provide support and motivation to the learners as well as ensure that the program is meeting Air China’s overall objectives. The results: Air China began to see immediate benefits after implementing English training with EF. Just 3 months after the program started, one manager attended a global conference and said that, if he had not taken the language courses offered by EF, he would not have had the confidence to attend the all-English meeting.

Private Lessons – Aviation English EF Corporate Language Learning Solutions has recently developed a series of 24 Private Lessons specifically for the Aviation Industry. Should an emergency occur, Pilots and Air Traffic controllers need to be able to relay information to one another, and do so calmly. Being able to talk about real life threats, and do so with confidence, is key. Each of the Private Lessons, therefore, aims to give students (pilots and ATCOs) a platform to practice language, giving them the confidence they need to communicate via radiotelephony. In the Private Lessons students can put newly acquired language Aviation SPINs 1, 2 and 3 on EF’s Online School into use to consolidate it, and furthermore activate passive knowledge. All activities are communicative with many open-ended questions to spark debate and ensure that students are talking approx 80% of time. Each Private Lesson follows EF’s preferred methodology of task-based learning, with various communicative activities leading up to a final task in which the students will have to produce spoken language. The final tasks, and topic of every lesson, are based entirely on real-life scenarios / disasters to make the lesson as relevant and realistic as possible. The series runs as follows: 1.
