Why English really matters The world we live in has never been smaller. We travel to, communicate and do business with the other side of the world in hours, minutes and seconds. The thing that underpins it all is a common language – English. Schools around the world teach it, digital communication fuels it, international business runs on it, and companies large and small have made it their corporate language. Almost two billion people either speak English as their first or second language or are learning to do so. An Economist Intelligence Unit report – Competing Across Borders1 – reveals just how important strong international communication skills are to gaining a competitive edge in business: • 89% of companies agreed that better cross-border communication improves profit, market share and revenue • 63% think a lack of clarity in their internal cross-border communication often results in lost productivity • 49% of global executives cited significant losses as a direct result of communication misunderstandings The message is clear: English is critical for organizations to compete globally. Those that do not invest in English training will eventually weaken their international presence. Those who embrace it as a corporate standard and develop their employees’ skills in Business English can enjoy huge rewards, including: • Better customer service, loyalty and competitive advantage • Increased employee effectiveness and lower operating costs • Improved knowledge sharing, collaboration and corporate innovation • Lower risks through clearer understanding of processes and procedures

IMMERSION COURSES Our study-abroad immersion courses, EF Executive, provide the full experience of living the culture and the language. Available at our International Language Centers and exclusive Executive Language Institutes around the world, these courses are the fastest and most effective way to learn a language. Most students progress one EF level every two weeks. OUR TEACHERS At the heart of EF’s learning method are our exceptional teachers, all of whom possess both a business-oriented and a functional understanding of job-specific training needs. All EF teachers have a TEFL qualification or equivalent, and a minimum of two years language teaching experience. CLASSES Students can select the mix of private and group classes that suits their needs best. In private sessions students work at their own pace with a personal coach to iron out any weaknesses; role-play particular scenarios and practice those all-important business school case studies. In small groups of fellow professionals they develop speaking and listening proficiency by engaging in lively discussions and delivering compelling presentations. Outside of class the full advantage of the immersion experience becomes available through networking with peers during organised social activities. TAILOR-MADE CURRICULUM Our immersion courses are customized for students to achieve their specific goals, whether these are to improve grammar, pronunciation, conversation skills or industryspecific vocabulary. During class-time, they practise professional situations such as making appointments, going over work-related reports and presentations. Students also get six months access to iLab, our cloud-based English school, so they can continue learning at home or at work.

FACE-TO-FACE COURSES Our highly innovative face-to-face courses combine the fun, social benefits, and pace of face-to-face training with rich-media content, unlimited teacher access and private teacher reviews. Delivered in our own English Centers1 or on-site in your offices or training facilities, these courses provide a range of highly tailored learning for busy professionals. Our on-site courses, that we call EF Professional, run from three months to a less intensive six months, with schedule and flexibility built in to both. Each course provides a combination of face-to-face classes (either small groups of 4-6 or 1:1) and Private Review classes with virtual study required in-between, all delivered by a dedicated teacher.

“We appreciated the combination of flexible virtual learning and tailored classes in our own groups. The feedback from the participants was utterly and unanimously positive.” – ALLAN PERTTUNEN Head of International Affairs, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Finland

Courses in our English Centers run from as little as three months to 30 months and can be configured with a range of workshops and social life-clubs. They include full access to our award-winning virtual school, and again come with built-in schedule and flexibility. Students on our local face-to-face courses progress an average of one EF level by the end of their course or semester.

EF English Corner – webinars and seminars The most successful company-based language programs are often those that provide opportunities for employees to learn together. EF English Corner, a suite of business skills seminars and webinars delivered by EF Teachers, and tailorable to specific company needs, provide just such an opportunity. EF English Corner seminars can be added as supplementary sessions for students in an existing EF language program, or as part of a broader program communication rollout. They provide additional language topics for existing students to practice together, and can introduce prospective new students to the experience of learning with EF. High-energy and highly-interactive, these business skills seminars are run in English as 60-minute sessions. Based around real-life scenarios they follow the same task-based principles inherent across all of our courses. They can be delivered either face-to-face or virtually as a webinar (depending on student numbers and proximity), for a minimum of 30 attendees at a time. EF English Corner utilizes innovative technologies and techniques to engage the students and drive real-time feedback and interaction from their smart devices. Language testing Knowing how you are progressing is critical to learning a language. Without seeing real progress in realistic timescales, learner confidence and motivation can be undermined. From rigorous school placement tests to end-of-level tests and the world’s first free standardized English proficiency test known as the EFSET, EF has the assessment tools for every requirement, all of which map to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) – the most widely accepted and independent standard scale of language proficiency. COMPANY-WIDE FREE ENGLISH TESTING WITH EFSET Trusted by over 2,500 companies, the EF Standard English Test is the world’s first standardised digital English proficiency test. EF offers the EFSET for company-wide assessment for free whether your organisation has 20 or 200,000 employees. EFSET test scores are accurate and scientifically aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference. The scores are easily comparable to those of TOEFL, TOEIC and BULATS. ORAL TESTING WITH EFSET SPEAKINGTM EF also provides comprehensive oral testing, with assessments by our EF Teachers. EF EFSET Speaking, charged at a nominal fee, assesses speaking and conversation skills. Results are marked and returned by our EF Teachers within 48 hours.

Outsourcing and On-site schools As the world’s largest private education provider, we know how to deliver learning at any scale. We create the most engaging and effective language programs, we know how to achieve maximum business impact, and we build and run schools in whatever form they come – in the cloud, in our own centers or in your offices. EF programs can be delivered in one of three ways. The first, and most common, is as a service provided by us and delivered from our own schools and servers, using our own teachers and support staff. We also provide services as a fully branded on-site school or even as a completely outsourced training provider.

www.ef.com/corporate

CS17_brochure_FINAL.indd 21

EF ON-SITE SCHOOL We have built, delivered and run hundreds of schools around the world. We know what it takes. For some, having a fully branded, high-visibility school on company premises is a very attractive option. Working with EF as a delivery partner is the smart choice. An EF on-site school is a viable option for larger organizations with significant learner needs in specific locations who prefer to reduce costs and administration by trusting the management of their language school to EF. EF LANGUAGE OUTSOURCING Some of our customers trust EF with 100% of their language program, as well as facilities and staff. The reasons vary; from allowing them to focus on their core business and improving financial efficiency, to leveraging economies of scale, new technology and innovation. We are a natural option and can provide all the expertise and services needed.

21

07/11/2016 11:16

Our pedagogy: the EF MethodTM It may appear obvious, but the very best way to learn a new language is with real teachers. Having a teacher alongside you, whether physically or virtually, providing help, structure, encouragement and practice is still the best way to improve your skills. That’s why we put EF Teachers™ at the heart of all our programs and pedagogy. Learning a language is no easy thing. Most academics agree that the fastest way is through a ‘communicative approach’. This focuses on using language in real conversation, rather than the old-style emphasis on vocabulary and grammar. EF has taken this approach further by focusing on real-life scenarios or ‘tasks’ and developing thousands of hours of ‘authentic’ learning material that underpin tasks throughout the course. We have baked all this in to our learning methodology called the EF Method™. However, even the best task-based content has to be complemented with two other critical things, because without them students simply give up: • Lots of conversation practice • Course structure and encouragement And it is teachers who deliver these best. It’s why we spend so much time hiring, training and investing in the best teachers around the world. We don’t ask our teachers to teach in the old-fashioned way, because we have pioneered an alternative approach to the ‘traditional’ classroom, which is now accepted as the most effective way of applying all types of structured learning. In our model, teachers are not the main ‘content trainer’ but rather play the role of mentor, coach, conversation practice partner and helper. We call it “Flipped Learning”, and we’ve found that it really is the fastest way to learn.

22

CS17_brochure_FINAL.indd 22

07/11/2016 11:16

SO WHAT IS FLIPPED LEARNING ANYWAY?

THE EF METHOD AND FLIPPED LEARNING

There is something of a revolution going on in the education sector.

In practical terms, all this translates into a language learning model which is task-based, has a high level of teacher involvement and focuses on dialogue and the use of authentic language.

RN

R

LY

TI

TR

Y

CE

Class time is used most efficiently for practicing and embedding new concepts with the teacher. The teacher is there to help students on an individual basis, when they need it the most. Teacher-led practice sessions are still at the core of the flipped model, which means learning is embedded more deeply. The teacher can set additional tasks for those who find the topic easy, and provide personal tuition for those who don’t. The teacher provides maximum support and encouragement, keeping students on track, fully engaged with the learning and progressing at a consistent rate.

FY

P

Leading academics now preach a new way of learning; a way that flips this model around. ‘Homework’ and other student-time should be used for learning new concepts (normally from video tutorials, the internet and their own group research).

A

The problem is that if the student hasn’t understood the topic, then no amount of homework will help, especially when the expert (the teacher) isn’t there to help.

The student is shown how to LEARN new language concepts often during self-study time. They then TRY them out in real-life tasks and situations before ‘immersing’ themselves in a live conversation class with a teacher to APPLY what they have learned. They then embed what they have learned in a private review lesson with a personal teacher to focus on areas of improvement and CERTIFY progress.

LE

For as long as anyone can remember, education systems have been basically the same; subjectmatter teachers stand at the front of a classroom and try their best to convey new concepts and new ideas. At the end of the class they set tasks, or ‘homework’ for students to practice what they have (or have not) learned.

AP

Flipped learning has been at the core of our programs from the very beginning. In our cloudbased school we offer unlimited access to teacherled conversation classes for speaking practice and social interaction, as well as teacher checkpoints at the end of each study unit for encouragement, support and progress monitoring. We believe it is the future for language learning and education.

Our learning system: EF EfektaTM 50 years of experience has made EF experts in what works (and what doesn’t) in language training. We know that a flipped, task-based approach – the EF MethodTM – is the best way to learn. But we also know you need a few other things: A) TEACHERS EF Teachers are at the very heart of our schools. We hire the best – all our teachers have a minimum of two years teaching experience, are native-level and hold a recognized teaching qualification – and then we train them rigorously in our methodology to ensure the very best learning experience. B) DESIGN & INNOVATION Innovation really excites us, whether that means using the latest technology and design principles, delivering new and compelling HD-content, or providing our cloud-school on your smartphone. If it will make a difference, we will find a way to deliver.

IMMERSION COURSES

FACE-TO-FACE COURSES

C) CONTENT Our cloud school has thousands of hours of ‘always available’ interactive learning activities in over 10,000 modules, across countless different activity types. Updates every two weeks ensure content is always fresh, engaging and topical. No other provider has the resources or even comes close to the breadth and depth of the learning content we develop. D) ACADEMICS We pride ourselves in our team of world-renowned academics and pedagogues, who work closely with our research partners in Cambridge, Harvard, Beijing and Moscow (read more on page 30). Together, they ensure that our courses follow the best possible academic process. We combine these critical components with the EF MethodTM to create the world’s most advanced approach to learning a language; the EF Efekta SystemTM. It underpins every language course we do.

Learning for everyone Like any other, an investment in language training should have a good business reason behind it. Language skills are often part of wider development needs. For example, management and leadership development are also common priorities within organizations. Language training works best when it is linked to the needs of a business or group of employees. When it is, the program delivers even more value back into the organization. This is why we segment language training into three broad levels of competence:

16

3. ADVANCED

GENERAL LEARNING

FUNCTIONAL LEARNING

For beginners and lower intermediate levels (EF levels 1-6), the best approach is “often and lots”; spending as much time as possible immersed in learning content and practicing with teachers. Every ‘learning moment’ counts! Students should follow our general English curriculum content and work on their spoken English in conversation classes. For more urgent needs we may recommend extra private classes or a course in one of our Executive Language Institutes.

For higher intermediate levels (EF levels 7-10) we encourage learners to add Business English content focused on their specific professional needs, whether industry or job-specific. Developing English skills in a relevant context keeps motivation and engagement high and helps learners apply new skills back to their day job. We recommend practice in conversation classes and private classes after each study unit. For more urgent needs, special private courses can be delivered in our Executive Language Institutes.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

www.ef.com/corporate

CS17_brochure_FINAL.indd 25

For Advanced and Expert level learners (EF levels 11-16) it is no longer just about learning English, but more about refining English communication for management, leadership and other purposes. For this reason we recommend our more challenging and ‘authentic’ content (e.g. based on current world affairs). A language course can be combined with other courses on management, leadership and other skills with our sister organizations Hult Business School and Ashridge Executive Education.

SCANIA

ICBC

Headquartered in Sweden, Scania is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks and buses. Founded in 1891 Scania now produces almost 80,000 trucks and buses for heavy transport use. The company employs around 44,000 people across the globe and has operations in more than 100 countries.

ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China) is the largest bank in China with over 400,000 employees. With more and more Chinese companies expanding abroad, the global market is becoming increasingly important for ICBC.

EF and Scania have been working together since 1997 in a full-scale language training partnership that has included immersion courses abroad, teacher-led virtual courses and local face-to-face courses. Built on a reputation of delivering the highest quality products, English language training from EF has become a key enabler of ensuring and driving quality processes throughout the organisation. Local face-to-face courses are now delivered to several hundred students every year in Scania’s own EF-run on-site school.

EF started working with ICBC in 2012, providing tailored solutions for their overseas management team. Before embarking on overseas assignments, employees improve their English skills with EF’s virtual school as well as intensive face-to-face courses for those with urgent needs. The excellent learning experience and service is highly valued among ICBC employees. “EF’s courses helped me improve my oral English a lot. The teachers are not only experienced in language teaching but also have a lot of business and industry knowledge. I feel more confident now in accepting a future overseas placement,” says Mr. Zeng, Director of Strategy Management.

BDO, the fifth largest global accountancy network with over 1,100 offices in 120 countries, uses EF English Live to provide a common language platform for its world-wide member firms.

AB InBev is the leading global brewer and one of the world’s top five Food & Beverage companies. It employs 150,000 people in 24 countries.

BDO made English a strategic goal for employees to improve communication with clients and to offer a more efficient consulting service.

“Conducting business on a global scale means that staff in our organization need to have strong English communication skills” says Linda Qian, VP People at AB InBev APAC.

One of the key reasons for BDO choosing EF English Live as their preferred language training solution was the 24/7 availability with teacher-led, virtual conversation classes starting every 30 minutes.

“AB InBev was impressed by the learning results. EF English Live is a cost-effective, efficient way to train our staff. Improving their English has certainly helped them to become more productive,” says Ms Qian.

AEROFLOT

AIR LIQUIDE

Aeroflot, the flag carrier and largest airline of the Russian Federation, chose EF Corporate Solutions as the preferred language training provider for 1,500 of its client-facing and operational employees.

Air Liquide is a is a major global industrial conglomerate with over 50,000 employees worldwide. Their construction and engineering services have large sites in Asia, Europe and the Americas, requiring English as a common working language.

They realized the importance of improved English skills to provide better levels of service and safety in the air and on the ground. Aeroflot chose EF as they were searching for a truly global provider with an excellent reputation and bestin-class project management support. EF English Live was a perfect fit as it allows staff to fit studies around their flight times – they can log in and study for just a few minutes if that’s all they can spare.

Staff had received English training for several years but not in a systematic fashion and without proper results tracking. EF’s first task with the company was therefore to conduct a major inventory of language skills and objectives, followed by a comprehensive language training strategy. In addition to its programme planning capabilities Training Manager Philippe Fournier gives another reason why EF was the obvious choice: “EF’s virtual school is not a ‘self-service’ as opposed to many others; it’s a real school where learners proceed through structured units, level by level.”
