EF Academy Philosophy Total immersion is a better way to learn
A truly global school: classmates from 30+ nationalities
Few other schools can match the ‘mini-UN’ vibe of an EF Academy campus. Virtually every class, activity, and event becomes ‘global studies’. You’re constantly expanding your worldview with multiple perspectives while sharing your own culture and traditions.
We take you out of your comfort zone!
On day one, you’re assigned to classes, advisory groups, and dorm communities with students who come from just about everywhere imaginable. The whole point of our global community is to learn how to navigate differences. Together, you begin to share your culture, find common ground, and embrace diversity as a superpower— all important skills for navigating an ever-shrinking world.
“My favorite thing about studying at EF Academy is that we see the whole world just by being in this community and meeting all these wonderful people from different backgrounds and countries.”
OLIVIA
Class of 2024
Norway
Every
class is global studies
Since you and your classmates come from 30+ countries, we carefully design every class so you can add your unique voices to the discussion. In this way, you begin to teach each other and enrich everyone’s understanding with multiple perspectives. You also get daily practice in listening to diverse points of view, asking questions, engaging in discourse, and building bridges of understanding and respect across cultures and ideas.
Expanded horizons lead to a fuller life
It’s important to be an active participant in campus life—both in and out of the classroom. You’ll find that daily life is much richer when you can say “please” and “thank you” in several languages, incorporate other holiday traditions into your own, appreciate music from different cultures, and play sports and games from around the world. Spending time building deep and meaningful relationships with such diversity will enhance your ability to connect, relate, and find joy with others throughout life.

EF ACADEMY PHILOSOPHY
How
you and your classmates put the “world” back in
World History class
All too often, we learn history from our own country’s perspective. Every history course at EF Academy is structured to take full advantage of our rich global community. We encourage students to become co-teachers and broaden the discussion by sharing the cultural perspective of their home culture. When studying World War II, for example, students are asked to translate and present wartime propaganda from their country’s press to fuel conversations about information and disinformation. Imagine the richness of the discussion that follows in a classroom with students from Germany, Poland, Japan, Austria, France, Brazil, Mexico, India, and the United States.

Personalized education— one size never fits all
Every student is unique—that’s why every learning journey must be unique. We craft a custom pathway just for you based on your talents and strengths. We help you set personalized growth goals with your advisors and develop a plan for achieving them with courses and co-curricular activities you actually care about.
10 EF ACADEMY PHILOSOPHY
Build your success plan from day one
Don’t wait until your third year to start discussing future options. Begin working one-on-one with your University Counselor the day you start school all the way to graduation. They help you figure out your personal goals, design a plan, and advise you on which classes you should be taking and which skills you should develop to achieve your dreams.
It’s what’s behind your grades that matters most
Unlike other schools, all your courses are designed around the skills and knowledge you will need to succeed in university, career, and life. You discover your true strengths, talents, and passions—and work closely with your teachers to develop the skills that build on them.
Focus on what you’re good at
Your personal growth is 24/7
Research shows that building meaningful relationships is one of the most important keys to happiness and well-being. That’s why campus life is so important to your education—from the classes you take and the sports, clubs, and activities you join, to your discussions with your House Parent or Advisor. We try to help you reflect on and grow from these experiences so you can develop the communication, selfawareness, and empathy essential to strong and lasting relationships.
Tilak, a student from India, created a personalized pathway through Grade 11 focused on his passion for science. In addition to taking AP calculus, computer science, and chemistry, he worked on a personal passion project to code and develop a Student Information System that could be used by his former school back home in India. Tilak also made science the focus of his Grade 11 Innovation & Impact Program. He and his teammates explored how to improve the sustainability and affordability of lithium-ion batteries by conducting experiments in the chemistry lab and making 3-D printing models of alternative batteries in the fabrication lab.
“I’ve been able to customize my academic classes, clubs, and activities. I’ve worked out a lot and eaten healthy, and, as a result, I’ve improved my grades. I am so happy, and my parents are so happy to see me this happy.”

Mastery of skills, not memorization of facts
Here, you learn how to think—the real secret to success. All your courses are designed around the skills and knowledge you will need to flourish in life, not just facts and figures to pass the next test. Because it’s not the knowledge itself that’s important—it’s how you use it.
We only design classes that are skills-based
Every class you take, whether English, chemistry or computer science, is carefully designed so that you are gaining both knowledge in that subject and practical skills that you can use throughout your life. In the case of English, for example, you learn how to analyze a text utilizing the core competency of critical thinking to determine whether your reading is based on fact or opinion.
You always produce evidence of what you’ve learned
Like real life, it’s important to prove your understanding of a topic with concrete examples of how you’ve applied the knowledge. At EF Academy, your grades will reflect the quality of your work and mastery of key skills, not just the average of the quizzes and tests you take. So get ready to complete assignments, collaborate on projects, and create original works that solve real-world problems with practical solutions.
Strive toward mastery at a pace that’s right for you
We recognize that every student learns differently. Some skills will come quite easily to you; others will be more of a challenge. At EF Academy, you get the time and space to master essential skills in the order and pace that makes sense for your individual strengths and growth areas—all with continuous feedback and support. You only progress to the next challenge when you and your advisors agree you’ve mastered the last one.

How our Innovation & Impact Program empowers you to meet 21st-century challenges
All EF Academy students complete our signature Innovation & Impact Program in addition to their high school diploma. You choose one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, work in multicultural teams to come up with a game-changing solution, and build real prototypes in our fabrication lab to test your ideas—all while being mentored by teachers from the disciplines most able to help your idea become a success.
A recent Innovation & Impact project was by the Asé Sunscreen team, which addressed UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water by partnering with on-campus scientists and an off-campus cosmetics factory to develop a focus on what you’re good at facial sunscreen to appeal to the Gen Z consumer.

Jeff Robinette Head of Department for Math; EF Academy Summer
School Administrator
“I always say the best question a student can ask is, ‘Why do I have to learn this?’ I am proud that our math curriculum focuses on real-world applications through hands-on math learning. Getting students out of the classroom and into the world to make observations, collect real data, and explore real phenomena— that breathes life into mathematics!”
Mr. Robinette is passionate about the real-life applications of math. Under his leadership, our Mathematics Department is revolutionizing its approach to instruction through a series of project-based modules that students complete in teams. He also runs an after-school club about budgeting and investments to prepare students for their financial futures. Our students learn so much about the world by working through complex challenges together!”
Ms. Clapp graduated from the University of Hawaii, where she earned both Focus on what you’re good at degrees in English and competed with their Division I Women’s Volleyball team. She leads the development of our signature Innovation & Impact Program and draws on her extensive background in competitive athletics to inspire students to collaborate in high-functioning teams, address realworld problems, and propose authentic solutions. Ms. Clapp loves our international community! She is a world traveler, having visited over 25 countries outside the US.

AP Courses
Advanced Placement (AP ) courses are recognized worldwide for their academic rigor, and are often a requirement for admission to top universities. They introduce high school students to first-year college content in a broad array of subjects. High performance on AP exams can earn students college credit at some universities, including the University of California system. Some universities outside of the US will require a particular set of AP courses and exams as part of admissions.
Advanced Study Courses
Advanced Studies (Adv) courses are designed by our faculty to provide an in-depth study on topics that are more typically explored in 2nd or 3rd-year university courses. These courses emphasize a project-based or research-based approach. They are honors-designated and recognized for being equal in rigor to AP classes.
What is the US High School Diploma?
Over 90% of the students who attend a top university in America earn a US High School Diploma. This four-year program (which is also accepted by universities worldwide) allows you to choose from a wide range of subjects in the arts, humanities, sciences, and math. At EF Academy, you work closely with your Advisor and University Counselor to customize a personalized study program based on your interests and goals.
Diploma: Upon successful completion, you are awarded a US high school diploma by the State of California. You also earn a grade and high school credit for each course, reflected in an official transcript you submit with your university applications. EF Academy students also graduate with a Mastery Transcript that showcases the strength of their work and the depth of their unique abilities.
Time at EF Academy: If you have already begun high school in your home country, you can still earn your diploma in the US. Your University Counselor will partner with your previous school to ensure you can apply credits previously made to your US High School Diploma.

Real-life learning— way beyond textbooks
The best way to learn is to roll up your sleeves and make your own discoveries—in and outside the classroom. We keep class sizes small so you can focus on building skills and knowledge through group projects that bring concepts to life. You also tackle challenges and find solutions through field study and service learning.
“We often get the chance to practice what we learn in class, anywhere, anytime. We take excursions to museums and other educational trips while discussing different perspectives of the world.”

Solve problems rather than memorize answers
Research shows you understand your academic subjects more deeply when you work in small groups to solve real-world problems. That’s why the majority of your class time revolves around Project-Based Learning. In math class, for example, you might find yourself throwing a baseball to calculate exactly how far the ball went using quadratics, trig ratios, and vectors.

A creative process for more creative solutions
Successful people solve life’s challenges in innovative ways. Creativity is key. So get ready to complete many of your assignments using Design Thinking, a proven process for finding the best solutions. You begin by trying to understand the true nature of the issue to be solved. You then define the problem and ideate and prototype your solution in one of our design labs. Finally, you test the results. Our media and fabrication labs are where you put the polish on your team’s exciting original creation.
Make the world your classroom
With our innovative class schedule (p.2425), you head off-campus to partake in outdoor field study experiences throughout the Los Angeles area. Then, each fall semester, you join your entire class on an immersive, multi-day trip that explores the wonders of Southern California. This allows you to build community with each other and connect with the area we call home. Finally, thanks to being part of EF Education First, you have the opportunity to join fellow students from our EF Academy New York campus on affordable spring break educational tours throughout the world.
In Science class, get ready to investigate true crimes and launch bottle rockets
Dr. Nicole Windmon, Head of the Department for Science, fully embraces Project-Based Learning in her chemistry classroom by solving real-world problems. Her students learn thermochemistry and balancing equations through a true crime investigation of a house fire, working as crime scene investigators to determine if the fire was arson or an accident. To deepen their understanding of stoichiometry and gas laws, Dr. Windmon’s students head outside to optimize bottle rocket launches. For her Advanced Studies in Organic Chemistry course, Dr. Windmon partners with a local university so her students can run samples of the materials they synthesize on advanced instruments, like mass spectrometers and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers.

Daily mentorship and 24/7 support
House parents, advisors, and teachers work as one team to ensure your well-being and success. You also join an advisory group led by your Advisor multiple times per week. This helps you flourish at all levels: academically, socially, and personally. You also get the additional support of qualified well-being counselors at our oncampus Health & Wellness Centers.
Your Advisor: a daily mentor to help you thrive
To ensure you’re maximizing your experience, you’ll meet almost daily with a faculty advisor and a small group of 8 to 10 students. Your Advisor is great at understanding students at your grade level, helping you master your homework, and offering strategies whenever you need a little extra support. Advisory group is also a time to work on wellness goal-setting, self-care, and healthy relationships.
Your University Counselor: helping you get into your dream school
You’re assigned a dedicated University Counselor in year one who gets to know your aspirations, passions, and talents. Though a carefully structured series of one-on-one and group guidance sessions, they help you build a personalized pathway of courses, identify the right universities for you, and craft an impressive application portfolio for admissions officers.

Where you can be you: your home away from home
Our welcoming campus community empowers you to come as you are and become who you want to be. Together, we create an inclusive environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Sharing everyday life—studying, eating, rooming, exploring, hanging out—is a priceless life-preparing experience.
“My favorite part of living and being on campus is having my friends and a really big community around to share important moments. This is really special for me.”

Diversity: Together, our differences become our superpower
We are deeply committed to creating a vibrant campus community—students, faculty, and staff—that reflects the rich diversity of our world and where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. Whoever you are, whatever makes you unique, whatever you are passionate about—we welcome you!
Well-being: We practice healthy habits and mindsets
Wellness is a big focus here at EF Academy Pasadena. That all starts with two semesters of Health and Wellness, where you learn self-care basics: establishing positive habits around study, sleep, and diet. We help you find ways of reducing stress and anxiety through mindfulness practices that work for you. You also take two semesters of Physical Education to ensure you’re as fit in body as you are in mind and spirit!
Sustainability: We share the responsibility of giving back to the planet
We embrace environmental sustainability in our daily lives on campus, reducing emissions by eliminating waste and singleuse plastics in our operations. We also make sustainability a pillar of our Innovation & Impact Program, where every student must contribute to a project with real impact that meets one or more of the UN Sustainability Goals. As an organization, EF also invests in climate protection through the EF Forest Initiative, which has resulted in the planting of 9 million mangrove trees in East Africa to date.

Our faculty and staff are courageous innovators, bringing the very best of student-centered education to life each day. Our adults model the bravery to try and fail, to learn from mistakes, and to stay remarkably curious about growth. Our students emulate that model in the way they embrace the unique opportunity of an EF Academy education.

A choice of boarding options
Many of our students live and learn on campus as full boarders. In Pasadena, local students also have the option of being a day student or boarding five days a week and living at home on weekends.
Living with roommates from around the world
So that you get the most out of living in such a diverse community, we ensure your two roommates are from different nationalities than you. Roommate trios are carefully crafted for compatibility in preferences about quiet time, cleanliness, and daily routines. You will enjoy educating each other on your different backgrounds, cultures, and traditions, as across the dorms, we work to build a community that is rich in different perspectives. Standard accommodation is in a triple room.
Note: Limited double and single rooms may also be available on request. Contact your Enrollment Advisor for pricing.
In the evenings, campus life shifts to dorm life
Your afternoons will keep you pretty busy with sports, clubs, and activities. You’ll be ready for your evening meal! Then dorm life starts with Study Hall when you catch up on homework and projects. There’s still plenty of free time for gathering in the dorm lounge to watch movies, sing karaoke, play video games, or hang out with your best friends. All too soon, it will be time for your house parent to conduct the final room check-in so you can get a good night’s sleep.
“I was matched with a roommate who helped me with my English, and I improved really fast. It’s helped my confidence and class participation!”

Meet your classmates, hear their stories
Every single one of our students has a unique perspective on the EF Academy experience. Let them tell you in their own words.
Kayla
Class of 2024 / USA
Scan and find many more student and parent stories about our philosophy, academics, and campus life.
“One of the biggest challenges I had to overcome within my academics was my dyslexia. But now that I’m here, I’m taking a lot of AP classes, one of them being AP English, and I’m proud to say that I’m overcoming that.”
Kayla is passionate about academics and finding ways to overcome difficulties she and other students face. ”I’ve founded my own club, called ’Eye to Eye,’ which is a non-profit that helps students with learning differences feel valued and unlock their unique skills.”
Kayla is also in Model UN and Business and Finance extracurricular clubs because she wants to study business in university and go to law school to get into international politics and run for public office.
46 EF ACADEMY CAMPUS LIFE
Emma
Class of 2024 / Spain
“I’ve had mind-opening and eye-opening experiences here at EF Academy. The learning and diversity here have been fulfilling and help me see the world from a different perspective.”
Before starting here, Emma was accustomed to a very different learning style in Spain, but now she’s been able to practice the theory learned in class in reallife based experiments. She’s also exploring AP classes, which she didn’t know about before, and she’s taking three of them: history, English, and biology.
She feels she’s become more confident and independent as an individual being away from home but in a supportive community, “everybody is involved, from the staff to the teachers and the students; it makes it very easy to feel welcomed and at home.”
Her roommate is from Nigeria, and she’s learned to coexist with someone else in the same room while learning their completely different customs and culture.
Tilak
Class of 2024 / India
“Today, I’m the project manager of my group, and we are creating a car battery, which is affordable, sustainable, and biodegradable where I can.”
Tilak wants to study artificial intelligence or computer science in the future, for which he has been building a solid foundation of knowledge at EF Academy. “Studying here has been completely different because the teachers here involve students in an activity to apply what we’ve learned. Whereas, in my previous school, the teachers would teach from the textbook. This has uplifted my knowledge of computer science and artificial intelligence.”
The campus provides him with a variety of learning opportunities that will help him on his path to university, such as the Robotics club and STEAM club.
Tilak has been getting a lot of guidance from his advisors for university preparation and feels he now knows everything to decide and apply.
Not only does Tilak enjoy the academic approach, but he also loves that he gets to socialize with so many different people every day. At home, he didn’t use English as much, but it’s become natural for him from being on campus.
Makar
Class of 2024 / Russia
“My advisor helps me a lot to understand the process of applying to university. Based on my skills, interests, and local preferences, they are helping me find a good match for my academic growth.”
Makar is a Russian student currently pursuing the US High School Diploma. He has found a personalized path that suits his learning style and needs at EF Academy Pasadena. He has worked with his advisor to take the right courses and extracurricular activities to meet his personal, academic, and career goals.
He also enjoys the campus “There’s also always something happening across the campus whether it be sporting events, pool parties or spending time with friends from all over the world.”
47 efacademy.org/pasadena
Sean Lee
Class of 2026 / South Korea
“One time in my history class, we did a role-playing activity based on the Crusades. We debated all sorts of topics, including whether even the Crusades were justifiable. In my case, I was given the role of Duke Henry of Bavaria, and it was up to me to immerse myself in that character sound like him, and act like him in our debate.”
Being here, Sean had learned the approach of immersing himself in the context of history, “It was definitely a challenging exercise that required a lot of critical thinking and creative problem-solving, but I found it to be incredibly rewarding and it helped me think from different points of view.”
Sean who had moved from South Korea to the US, wishes to become a naval officer one day, but he is currently exploring all of these options by playing in the volleyball club, business, and finance club. “I wish to have a balanced life. I can learn about teamwork and communication through volleyball and learn practical yet academic topics like how to finance a car in my business club.”
Uma
Class of 2025 / USA
“My education experience is different here because we get to talk to each other in class. In English class, we always have Socratic discussions about the books we read.”
Uma, who is from the US, enjoys the open discussions in her classes, which allows her to hear the idea and opinions of students from across the world while gaining a better understanding of their different cultures. Uma shares, “When I hear so many different opinions, it helps me understand more about the world and form my own beliefs better.”
Uma has also been able to explore her social side at EF Academy. Before, she was more quiet and reserved, but being surrounded with friends from around the world—she’s become more extroverted and confident.
Ellie
Class of 2024 / Hong Kong
“In my old school in Hong Kong, the grades were determined by only two exams in the whole year. Here, one particular test does not determine my understanding of a subject, so I know there are more chances for me to show my true ability on that particular subject.”
Like many students, what drew Ellie to EF Academy is the focus on mastery of skills rather than memorization of facts. She has figured out her true abilities with the multi-faceted learning approach. At EF Academy, courses are designed around the skills and knowledge students need to thrive and flourish, not just facts and figures to pass the next test. “This has changed the way I view learning.”

EF ACADEMY CAMPUS LIFE
Karoline
Class of 2024 / Norway
“I’d always dreamed about going here, so I researched a lot and made a presentation for my parents to let me go here.”
Now that Karoline is on-campus, she couldn’t be more thrilled. “I love the campus. I am playing volleyball, basketball and also doing cheerleading, just like in the movies.”
She also recalls an exciting project in biology where the class was learning about enzymes and the teacher presented the task of making cereal boxes with the enzymes playing the part of cereal. She had to consider how the cereal box would appeal to potential buyers. The project was interesting, “not only did we have to think about biology, but also art, marketing and English.”
Cash
Class of 2026 / United States
“The first thing that I really noticed here was the class sizes, how small they were compared to the class sizes he was used to. It truly makes you feel valued and that you have your own time to get attention from the teachers.”
Cash is a California local and before joining EF Academy Pasadena, he had only experienced the US public school system. “This place makes kids feel loved. I love the people here and I really feel at home here.”
The small class sizes, in combination with the international community at EF Academy, has opened a new way for Cash to learn. “I’m learning from my peers by learning about their different cultures. I’m even picking up different languages!”
Sophia
“Because of the schedule and time we have, we can use that time to get all of our questions answered from our teachers. I’m really looking forward to going to university in the United States.” Sophia has been able to enjoy her subjects far more in-depth ever since she’s come to EF Academy compared to what she was used to in Brazil.
She is also part of the Innovation & Impact Program, where each group focuses on one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, “I’m part of the Innovators pathway and we are working on the Life Below Water goal made by the UN.” They organize trips to Laguna Beach to help pick up trash. She also enjoys the field trips and excursions exploring the neighborhood. Sophia’s favorite would be Old Pasadena, “It’s such a beautiful avenue and there are a lot of different things to do.”

The EF story
EF has been transforming the way the world learns through immersion for nearly 60 years
It all started with a new vision for education
Bertil Hult founded EF in 1965 with the belief that people learn best through immersion and hands-on experiences. He struggled with traditional classroom learning as a high school student with dyslexia in Sweden, and he realized during a summer job in England that he was picking up English effortlessly by living the language, not studying it. This led him to become one of the early founders of immersion learning.
Today EF is a global education organization
Thanks to the power of immersion learning, EF helps people around the globe explore new places and experience new cultures, learning more about the world and themselves. Today, EF teachers and team members work in schools and admissions offices in over 50 countries—yet we all share the same 60-year mission: opening the world through education by breaking down the barriers of language, culture, and geography that divide us.
We started EF Academy to build a better school
We believe a 21st-century education must provide students with far more than preparation for university. We unlock each student’s unique potential through a highly immersive education designed to ignite curiosity, growth and well-being. And we provide them with the real-world knowledge and skills essential for leading a successful and happy life.
EF Academy’s commitment to you
We challenge ourselves to live up to these educational principles each and every day:
– All students are capable of high achievement.
– Student-centric teachers are the key to a great education.
– The best way to learn something is to experience it.
– The future belongs to those who understand the world.
– A true education helps students figure out what they’re good at.
– Happy kids succeed.

3. Attend an interview
This is your chance to tell us about your interests and ambitions, academic commitment and motivation for coming to EF Academy. It is also our chance to get to know you “off paper” and gain a sense of how you will both fit in and stand out as member of our school community.
4. Find out if you’re accepted!
After making a holistic assessment of your application, you will receive our admissions decision. Successful applicants will receive an acceptance pack and our Enrollment Advisors will help you finalize any documentation closer to departure.
