Silence is an answer. In fact, I think silence is the loudest response one can receive. It has been a silent year. People have spoken to me without saying a word. At first, I was offended. Then, I realized that it is time to define myself, by myself, for myself. Which was humbling and empowering all at once. I am Efe Magazine and all that it stands for. The colour of my skin does not dictate who I can inspire. “Black girl magic” is a thing. So why I am still in question? Have I not earned my placed? Are my words or my intentions unclear? I didn’t realize I was the problem. But let me ask you this… If I only connect with the black community, what harm is there if you connect with them too?
So, here I am in the middle of uncertainty, where I have two options: dealing with the pain that comes with achieving my goals or the pain of remaining stagnant. Staying exactly where I am, or even worse… where everyone else thinks I should be?
Eckhart Tolle said: “A grateful heart is truly a magnet for miracles. Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.”
This quote stopped me in my tracks. As I looked back on all my accomplishments and all the hardships I’ve faced, I asked myself: do I have grateful heart or do I have a heart with expectations? I smiled to myself as I realized that even though I am grateful, the expectations were still there. That even though I was giving with all that I have, the expectations were still there. And even though my heart is pure, the expectations were still there. I expected to be supported. I expected ease. I expected that I would be further along.
I remember standing in my living room sobbing, crying because things felt so hard, nothing was going my way. I was hysterical actually; I was having a full out adult tantrum. I’m embarrassed to even think about it. But when I collected myself and opened my eyes, there I stood in my open concept house with vaulted ceilings. I look around at my all-white kitchen with a 14 foot island that sits in the center, hardwood floors throughout, with windows and skylights everywhere. I was standing in the middle of everything I’ve ever wanted and everything I’ve worked for. So why the tears? Nobody promised me that this journey would be simple. But here I was, deep in my own feelings. Forgetting all that I have accomplished. Forgetting all who are supporting me and all that I will conquer. I allowed myself to get wrapped up in a moment that is only temporary. By replacing expectations with gratitude, I found my way. I found my strength, I found me. So today I am committed. I promise to stand up and continue to do what is difficult for the better of our industry. And I can do this because of you and because of God.

We all know that if your hair is dry then so is your scalp, we often overlook the care that is required, a healthy scalp is the foundation to healthy hair. Stimulating your scalp promotes growth. Properly cleansing the scalp removes any buildup over the pores which promotes growth. ensuring that your scalp has proper hydration promotes growth… And this goes for all hair types. Did you know that certain hair types are more prone to scalp irritation simply based on hairstyles and products. For example, hair extensions, braids and weaves. Dust, dirt and moisture build up and hang out at the base of the extension causing the scalp to be damp and itchy or dry and itchy. Which causes odor and flakes. To sooth this discomfort the overuse of products such as oils and sprays causing more build and further scalp irritation. To further the discussion, it is known that an oily scalp goes hand and hand with fine hair. But what about fine 4C hair? Microscopic sebaceous glands produce a natural oil called sebum that protects and moisturizes your skin and scalp. The sebaceous glands found on your scalp are attached to your hair follicles. When the glands become overactive, they can create a condition called seborrhea – more commonly known as oily scalp. However, on coarse textured hair, the sebum does not travel as quickly down the hair shaft, therefore hair will not become oily as it works to hydrate hair seal the cuticle. The understanding the difference between the scalp needs and hair needs make all the difference. The most important thing to remember is the needs for each client will differ based on what they are doing on a daily basis and also the routine you put them on. Lets start training our clients. A healthy scalp means healthy hair
Nioxin Scalp Relief
Total relief… All the puns intended. The scalp and area that is often overlooked. However, it is the base for healthy hair. Of course, it was gentle on the scalp but also performed well on all hair types. Most often systems typically cater to hairs types up to 3A. Yes, they nourish the scalp by never have enough hydration to also soften hair that has a coarser texture. We were able to get great results up to a 4a. It softens and moisturized. rehydrated curls also aided with curl formation. We did three Shampoos. 1 for the removal of build up, 2 to cleanse, 3 for overall wash. We ended with the conditioner under a steam cap for 5 minute. Hair and scalp were great Added to the serum, which is a foundation setter and you are ready for styling, braiding.
Nioxin Instant Fullness Dry Cleanser
Yes great volume, we are so use to using dry cleanser on fine hair for lift and for removing moisture. But what about hair with some density or texture. First things first, textured hair thrives best with their natural oils, therefore we shampoo less. Dry cleansers are the answer for hair with density, why? Removes access moisture allow client to maintain a style for longer. Eliminating moisture also helps to eliminated itch, and access oils sitting on the scalp and hair shaft. A great alternative to cleanser protective styling such as braids, extensions and weave. And the greatest part is there is no residue.
It is always a pleasure speaking with an artist who is purpose driven. Someone who looks beyond themselves to create a world that is better for others. A leader who understands what it takes to motivate, uplift and have ‘drive.’ Not just for themselves, but for an entire industry. Lisa, embodies all of these things. We’ve only known Lisa for a few years but the connection feels like it began a lifetime ago. Watching her own her space has been truly inspirational.
COVER COLLECTION
Where it all began…
The fourth grade was the first time I went to the hair salon for a set of highlights... What an experience - I felt so glamourous. When it came down to what I wanted to do with my life, I immediately remembered the feeling I felt after getting my hair done and wanted to be able to do that for others. So, I went to hair school at the Aveda institute of Toronto. Once I graduated, It was quite the journey for me to find a salon to work in. I never found a spot where I felt like I belonged, and I never lasted more than 9 months. After a few moves, I decided to take a chance on me and work as a freelancer. I really focused on developing both myself and my social media. And that’s when everything changed for me. In 2016 I opened Lisa Dinh Hair.
Brand Ambassador
I’ve worked with many brands before, and had great relationships, but nothing like the partnership I have with Moroccanoil. We have an inclusive partnership going on two years now. The opportunity couldn’t have presented itself at a better time. I was ready for all they had to offer. I wanted more out of my career and the opportunity they were offering would provide that. Moroccanoil is a great company - they have given me a platform to educate, network and explore other areas of the industry that allow me to grow as an artist. I truly love their product and the brand aligns with all of my goals.
What’s do you love most about being on stage?
There is nothing like the energy that comes with being on stage. The connection you make with the audience allows you to really engage with them - which is the purpose of education; sharing your knowledge.
“I’M GOING THROUGH A PHASE IN MY LIFE OF REDISCOVERY. I FEEL THAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED ALL THAT I COULD ASK FOR AT THIS POINT AND I AM INTERESTED IN LEARNING WHO LISA IS OUTSIDE OF THE SALON AND OUTSIDE OF THE INDUSTRY.”
Favourite part of Hairstyling?
Colouring. I used to be so intimidated by hair colour; I always feared that I wasn’t formulating properly, or that I wouldn’t be able to colour correct. But now, it’s been over a decade of me obsessing over creating the right colour combination. Once I figured out that there is power in exploring colouring, it helped me to become a better colourist. Now I feel like sky’s the limit.
Why Beauty?
At first it was all about my clients and the hair I would create. Then it became about the networking, the connections and finding the moments to show what this industry is really about. My love for the industry changes as often as I do. It’s also about what inspires me, what drives me and what makes everyone feel good. I’m certain it will continue to shift as my needs change; we are forever evolving.
Biggest Challenge as a Salon owner?
Balance – I feel like a lot of salon owners encounter this. We carry so much on our plates when it comes to managing (staff), running a salon (the business), and working behind the chair (being a stylist). On a professional level it’s great, but many struggle with work/life balance and having real personal time. I am a big advocate for mental health. It is very important for you to take care of yourself so you can give back to others.
What’s next?
I’m going through a phase in my life of rediscovery. I feel that I have accomplished all that I could ask for at this point and I am interested in learning who Lisa is outside of the salon and outside of the industry. I’m excited to meet the new Lisa. Stay tuned…
Facial cupping has taken the beauty world by storm, and LaPlume is at the forefront, delighting in its popularity. As a long-time cupping enthusiast, I have experienced the benefits of this ancient therapy on my body for over a decade. Cupping, with its roots dating back centuries, yields long-lasting results when incorporated into regular skincare routines, much like exercise benefits the body.
LaPlume's glass cups work wonders in gently lifting and massaging the skin, offering a wide range of benefits from reducing puffiness to toning the face. This innovative facial cupping technique is believed to promote cell repair and enhance the flow of Qi, the life force that animates us. By allowing the skin to gently separate from underlying tissue, it stimulates healing and regeneration, benefiting both the face and the rest of the body.
Historical Background:
While facial cupping may seem like a novel cosmetic therapy, it traces its roots back to ancient Egyptian and Chinese medicine practices. It has been utilized for holistic
treatments and spread across Europe during the Renaissance period (14th to 17th century). Evidence of facial cupping can be found in Egyptian hieroglyphics dating back to 1500 BC and Chinese medicine practices from 1000 BC.
The Distinction:
Facial cupping sets itself apart from body cupping. Unlike static cups used on the body that may leave bruises, facial cups are designed to glide across the skin, promoting blood circulation. This gentle ritual draws impurities from the skin tissues and directs them to the lymphatic system for elimination.
Physiological Benefits:
Cupping is a holistic approach that triggers four essential physiological responses: lymphatic, vascular, nervous, and muscular. These responses lead to various benefits, including pain relief, reduced inflammation, improved immune function, and increased relaxation.
NATURAL FACELIFT
Rejuvenate Your Skin WITH LaPLUME
AND FACIAL CUPPING
Facial cupping is particularly effective in plumping and lifting the skin, ensuring that healthy blood, oxygen, and nutrients reach the skin tissues. It not only releases tension and toxins but also enhances skin texture, clarity, elasticity, and reduces puffiness.
Revitalizing Your Face:
To give your facial muscles a lift, incorporating cupping into your skincare routine once or twice
a week can work wonders. Even occasional treatments can make a noticeable difference, especially for relieving tension in the face caused by unused or tired muscles.
LaPlume's Facial Cupping Kit:
LaPlume's facial cupping kit contains four glass cups, ensuring every inch from forehead to décolletage can benefit from this rejuvenating practice. The kit brightens the skin, boosts blood
flow, stimulates collagen production, softens fine lines, strengthens skin and connective tissue, and improves nutrient absorption.
Dos and Don'ts of Facial Cupping:
Wash your face and pat it dry.
Massage your face with a generous amount of high-quality plum oil.
Use high-quality oil, preferably richer oils for better results.
Glide the cups across your skin, avoiding pulling or overstretching.
Apply slow and steady movements, adjusting the pressure accordingly.
Be mindful of bruising, especially for fair skin tones; don't leave cups suctioned for too long.
Keep the cups moving to avoid unwanted marks.
Use small cups on sensitive areas such as under the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth.
Pregnant women and those on bloodthinning medication should consult their healthcare provider.
LaPlume's cupping kit includes cups of various sizes, from 15mm ideal for around the eyes to 55mm perfect for body treatments.
To sculpt your face effectively, work the cups upwards and outwards at an angle from the center of the face, along the jaw, under the cheekbone, and then along the cheekbone. This will tone the skin, chin, jawline, neck, and décolletage.
Unlock Your Beauty Potential with LaPlume:
Embrace the beauty of facial cupping in your rejuvenation rituals. Let this ancient therapy and LaPlume, help your beauty bloom as you indulge in a journey of natural rejuvenation and self-care.

As a VZN Awards finalist, feelings range all around for Maria Isho. But mostly, she describes feeling excited, yet “overwhelmed” at the potential prospects this September. “It’s making me realize that people are looking at my work and they’re recognizing the work I put out there,” she said. “But sometimes as stylists, no matter what you do, we’re really hard on our work.”
“At the end of the day, I feel like my goal is to cater to anybody and I want someone to look at and me and look at my work and like it no matter what,” she said. “In my collection [...] I wanted to give people the vision that I can cater to anyone despite how short your hair is, how thick your hair is, what colour your hair is. I wanted to show that I do more as well, although I specialize in hair extensions.”
In her career, Isho is motivated by memories that hold a special place in her heart: as a child, watching her mom do professional hair in their basement. Although she reveals that she had no desire to do hair at first, she found out years later that the passion lay deeper in her than she thought. “I’m so grateful I’m in it today,” she said. “Life kind of creates its own path for you sometimes.”

Natalia Farahmand is no stranger to the VZN Awards — and she’s back to defend her 2021 title of Makeup Artist of the Year. When it comes to competitions like the VZN Awards, she says it’s important to push forward for a win even after winning once before. “I just really wanted to elevate and challenge myself in a different way, to prove that I can make it a second year,” said Farahmand. “Even if you do have a win, whether it’s a trophy or not, in order to elevate yourself in your craft you have to keep going.”
Farahmand chose three distinct looks in the collection she submitted. One look is even a blast from the past, and being a ‘90s baby meant everything when she was putting the first part of her collection together. “I wanted to take it back into the past and give it a feel that I connect

Being a finalist means being part of a powerful event, according to Farahmand. It’s one of the best parts of the show, she says. “The inclusivity and diversity aspect of it brings forth power,” she said. “And seeing all the different individuals who have really worked on their craft is a beautiful thing to see.”

For many, it’s an adventure to be part of a competition where you get to be a finalist. For Chris Lord, it’s that and so much more, especially to be recognized in a city outside of his own. As the VZN Awards gets ready to gear up in Toronto, Lord says finding success outside of his hometown of Ottawa is rewarding in itself. “I was pretty excited about that, getting recognized for my work in another city, especially in a city the size of Toronto — it’s a pretty humbling experience,” he said.
When thinking about inspiration for his collection, Lord said he wanted hair to be the focal point. Not only that, but he wanted hair that “pops,” he said. “It’s dark, it’s moody, due to not only the colour of the background, the dark shirts, a little bit of gold on there — I think they’re all accent pieces that really make it pop.”
Lord said being part of the VZN Awards will help him solidify his brand in Ottawa, amongst clients and even staff: “People want to work for people who have accolades, especially in the hair industry,” he said. “I think that would be extremely beneficial for me to in fact, win.”

Quinn Enright
Schwarzkopf
Submitting to Colourist of the Year was a “nobrainer” for Quinn Enright. In fact, it’s her entire world, with everything in the hair industry revolving around that single aspect. “Colour is everything to me,” she said. “I absolutely love colour, it’s just my world. My whole family is artists, I grew up with colour — my brain is so wired to that category. I still do cutting and styling, but colour is my go-to.”
Enright is a competition veteran, so she has a wise outlook on what people might expect at the
VZN Awards. One insight she has is that often, competitive work is about competing against yourself. If people view it that way, it helps competitors stretch their own limits, she says. It’s only when people get to the VZN Awards do they become inspired but what their colleagues have to put on the table.
“When you get to go to the VZN Awards and see other finalists and talk to those finalists and see their work throughs, and what they went through [...] it’s just a really inspiring experience,” she said. “VZN is really cool, because it’s newer, there’s a new platform, there’s voice. It’s like being at the beginning of a new generation of artists.

Robin LaChance
Tinted Love Hair Studio
There’s a fun, creative side to the VZN Awards that allows Robin LaChance to indulge in outside of the salon, she says. When she gets to selfexpress on the stage, she’s sharing what makes her job so great in the first place. “I think that every time we give a little piece of our art to the world that it is a little bit special because it’s so different from what we do day-to-day behind the chair,” she said.
LaChance started doing competition work around 15 years ago. She credits competitions with helping evolve her career both behind the
chair and creatively outside of the salon. But what drives her to compete in the VZN Awards as opposed to others competitions is that the VZN Awards explores inclusivity differently than other shows do. “Before Andrea and Efe came along, I was looking at YouTube a lot,” she said. “A lot of that hands-on skill has come through Andrea and the magazine and connecting with artists.”
LaChance is most inspired these days by the talent she works around: colleagues, friends, and various competitors at different shows. The love and passion that strives in the hair community makes her realize that she’s part of a community: “You’re part of something larger. Everyone just encourages each other to express what they have inside.”

Grace Trang
Suade Salon
Grace Trang is an expert on the goings-on at the salon chair. But perhaps the greatest ode to The Salon Chair award is showcasing exactly what goes on behind it. At least, that’s what she decided when she submitted her collection to the category. Because the beauty of the category is all about celebrating the authenticity behind the chair, according to Trang. “The Salon Chair category to me is us taking photos from the chair,” she said. “It’s not in a professional studio, it’s our daily work that’s being put up.”
Being a VZN Awards nominee means that Trang gets a platform to put herself out there. Although she’s used to putting out her work in an online capacity, having the opportunity to do so in person allows herself to find inspiration in others. “I feel like it inspires other people when you put out your own work, in the same way I feel like it inspires me to do better too,” she said.
Trang has been a hairstylist for 17 years. Even so, being nominated for the colour section of The Salon Chair is a big feat. But the shocking reveal is that she began colouring hair last year — it’s a big reason why her favourite thing about the VZN Awards is its inclusivity. “To find this passion so much later in life and to be recognized for it is really gratifying,” she said. “It’s great to be part of that.”
