EDITOR’S LETTER

Aging is a privilege, and the older I get I have the privilege of becoming more in tune with myself. I understand what makes me tick, what excites me, what to avoid and what to embrace. I am learning my true values and with that I will not negotiate who I am and what I stand for. That being said, I am committed to your success.

The other day I was told “diversity and Inclusion doesn’t completely align with my brand message.” There was complete silence, and we had an awkward stare down. The conversation continued with “we have to focus on what is best for our brand.” I thought to myself: “What a privilege that diversity and inclusion is a choice.”

What happened? Are we so far removed from the truth that we have reverted back to what was? Please don’t tell me that another person of colour needs to be brutally murdered in front of the world again for the beauty industry to acknowledge the gap. THERE IS A GAP.

I watched big companies make extravagant statements and promises for change on social media. And because of my love for our industry, I believed them. I hoped there would be real action that followed. I hope that the leaders of our industry were not bandwagon jumpers. I hoped the black square on your social media pages for #blackouttuesday was not just to

EFE Magazine 10 JUL | AUG 23

“Please don’t take offense to my truth. It’s my truth. If my words hit hard, ask yourself why?”

bring recognition to your pages for likes and comments. WE ARE NOT A TREND.

Someone who takes “the road less traveled” is acting independently, freeing themselves from conformity of others. This is a lonely road. And I get it, it’s not for everyone. Having the courage to stand up for what you believe in can be exhausting. Especially when it directly affects you.

Before I am anything, I am a Black woman. Before you see my knowledge, my accomplishments, my position, my compassion; I am a Black woman. And if my Blackness intimidates you, that has nothing to do with me and everything to do with you. I am tired of trying to make you feel comfortable by dimming my light so you can shine yours.

Know that, it is not my job to make you feel comfortable in my presence. Please, don’t get me wrong, I am not discrediting your feelings of discomfort, I know how that feels. But what I am saying is, what you do with that discomfort is your responsibility.

I am not new to the industry, I’ve been here. It’s been over 25 years. And at some point, I too watched silently and was part of the exclusion of the BIPOC community from imagery, from education, and from product development. It was easier for me to pretend to fit in, so I applauded when I saw the token black girl. You know, the one that’s at the end of every hairshow… the “show stopper” with hair that is poorly executed and make up that does not complement her skin tone. That’s all I knew, that is what was given to me, so I thought it was all I deserved. I’m not doing that anymore. Let’s start to appreciate

the beauty behind all cultures and recognize the many capabilities of all textures of hair. ITS TIME EDUCATE.

I feel like we’ve been here before… The promise of change. But how can we make change when many of the leaders of our industry don’t see or understand what the change is for? I understand that change cannot happen overnight but let’s at least be open. See, hear and recognize the needs of others and approach this change with sincerity. I hope you can acknowledge that I have more to bring to the table than just my skin colour. That I’m not just the black face on your stage. I hope you can acknowledge the value I bring and appreciate my talents.

“Your clients aren’t our clients” (I still don’t know what that means). I refuse to acknowledge what that means. As a black woman in the beauty industry lobbying and creating change, I have heard many things. I’m sorry, but last I checked, our clients are industry professionals which I believe to be everyone’s clients. “Multicultural” does not mean black… But if it did, why are they not your clients?

Please don’t take offense to my truth. It’s my truth. If my words hit hard, ask yourself why?

The time is now, and I will no longer allow you to put me in a category that I haven’t placed myself in. So, no, you cannot touch my hair or feel my skin. It is not appropriate to call me “Black Panther.” I am not your queen of Wakanda, and it is never okay to use the N-word. Even if I am not present. I ask, if you could please stop labelling me as an angry black woman just because I take a stance or have a strong opinion. This agenda does not belong to me solely, though I

am very proud to help lead. This is the world’s agenda and it seems the only industry to not fully understand the assignment is the professional beauty industry.

For a moment I thought we were making changes. I thought we all taken a stance in regards to the future of diversity within the beauty industry? I mean, you all have a DEI department, right? Let me ask you, when was the last time you actioned an initiative to better understand the needs of your entire team? And let me be clear, I’m not taking a stance just for the black community, but for all those who call the beauty industry home. I thought we were taking small steps to create big changes. The only changes I see happening is the lack of support. I am proud that as a company, our position, mandate and direction remain the same. “The Beauty of Inclusion” was trending long before we were supposedly trending…

So, I’ll leave you with this. Diversity and inclusion should not be an imposition, or something that is overlooked, but as a stepping stone that will open doors, building new relations and new business. It is an opportunity to see all sides of beauty and integrate that into your brand messages. I’m going to do this with or without you. The goal is to welcome all allies who will stand for us when we cannot stand for ourselves, who will be our voice when we cannot speak and who will remember us in conversations, when we are forgotten. I boldly ask that if you stand with us, stand proud, and with confidence. If you choose not to stand, don’t pretend, step aside. LET’S TAKE ACTION.

Andrea Sampson always “addressing hair by texture not race”.

UP SKILLED

In today’s rapidly evolving world, staying ahead of the curve and continuously improving your craft is crucial for personal and professional growth. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, upgrading your skills is an investment that pays dividends throughout your career. As you all know, I love the stage and I’m certain it loves me. I’ve been performing on stage for over 15 years, but I recently enrolled in a course at the Stand Up and Speak Academy of Public Speaking. So many people have asked me: “WHY?”

Even as a seasoned speaker, there are many areas in my pitch that I feel need improvement. I mean, I still get the “I’m going to throw up” feeling right before getting on stage. But I love it; sharing information fuels me. I have completed two courses at Stand up and Speak, and both times, I’ve shared the room with individuals that have never once been on a stage; and they taught me more than I could’ve imagined. It was both humbling and exhilarating all at the same time. An experience we should all go through. Find your ‘humbling and exhilarating’ experience; it will change your life. Here are five reasons why you should upskill:

1. Stay Relevant in a Dynamic Industry:

Our industry is constantly evolving, driven by fashion, and emerging trends. Upgrading your skills ensures that you stay relevant and adaptable. By keeping up with the latest tools, techniques, and industry standards, you position yourself as a valuable asset to employers and clients alike. Embracing new knowledge and staying current in your craft allows you to navigate industry shifts with confidence and maintain a competitive edge.

2. Enhance Professional Credibility:

Continual skill development boosts your professional credibility and demonstrates your commitment to excellence. Employers and clients seek professionals who are dedicated to honing their craft and delivering high-quality results. By upgrading your skills, you showcase your willingness to go the extra mile to provide the best possible service. This enhanced credibility can open doors to new opportunities, promotions, and increased recognition within the industry.

3. Expand Your Career Opportunities:

Upgrading your craft expands your career horizons by opening doors to new opportunities. Acquiring new skills and knowledge can broaden your expertise, allowing you to take on more diverse clientele or transition into new areas of specialization. Additionally, upgrading your skills can make you more eligible for advanced roles, leadership positions, or entrepreneurial ventures. By continuously developing your abilities, you create a solid foundation for long-term career growth and exploration.

4. Boost Confidence and Personal Growth:

Investing in skill upgrades boosts your confidence and personal growth. As you master new techniques or acquire additional knowledge, you become more self-assured in your abilities. This increased confidence translates into greater job satisfaction, improved performance, and the motivation to tackle new challenges. Upgrading your craft not only enhances your professional life but also nurtures your personal development, fostering a sense of fulfillment and pride in your work.

5. Adapt to Changing Customer Expectations:

Customer expectations are ever-evolving, and keeping pace with their demands is vital for success. Upgrading your skills allows you to meet and exceed these expectations by offering innovative solutions and delivering exceptional customer experiences. By understanding and incorporating the latest industry trends, you can provide your clients with cutting-edge products, services, and insights. Upgrading your craft enables you to stay connected with your target audience, ensuring continued satisfaction and loyalty.

In a fast-paced and competitive world, upgrading your craft is not just an option; it’s a necessity. Embracing lifelong learning and continuously enhancing your skills is a strategic investment that pays off in numerous ways. By staying relevant, enhancing your professional credibility, expanding career opportunities, boosting confidence, and meeting evolving customer expectations, you position yourself for long-term success and fulfillment in your craft. So, take that leap, embrace growth, and unlock the limitless potential that awaits when you upgrade your skills.

Hot on her heels, we have Heila Pirzadeh. Heila is one of the industry’s hottest stylists to hit the salon floor in recent years. With just --- years of experience, she’s making her mark in the GTA. One of her goals is to make the cover of Efe Magazine. Needless to say, she had us at HELLO!

Nationality: Persian – Iran

Favorite Colour: Beige

Favorite Food: Burgers and Fries, If a burger arrives by Uber Eats… everyone know it’s for me.

If you were a drink, what would be: If you were a drink, what would be? Lychee Martini. Why? because it’s sweet with a little kick. You don’t know when it will hit you.

Why Hair: I’m an artist by nature. At the age of seven I won an international painting competition. But I never really honed in it. My dad was in IT, so I tried IT… it wasn’t for me. I literally tried everything. Real-estate, interior design, makeup... After all that, I finally decided

to become a hairstylist. Not just styling, but colour as well. I made a big move and asked one of Canada’s top stylists if I could apprentice for her as I sat in her chair getting my colour done. I’m certain you know her… Sharon M, from Yoga Colourist Salon. Fast forward to today, and I have the privilege of working there. When working for one of the best, your only option is to also thrive to be the best. Every day I am learning and every day I am grateful to be a hairstylist.

Online learning vs In Person learning: Some things are okay to learn online, but for anything hairstyling, I think it has to be in-person. There is just that extra level of support you just can’t get online.

If I wasn’t a hairdresser I would be a detective, my investigation skills are on point. Nothing gets past me - I can find anything out.

To anyone just entering the industry, It’s not always going to be easy, do not give up. Go after anything that scares you. You get the best results that way.

TIME TO hydrate

When you hear the word hydration, I’m certain hair is not the first thing that comes to mind. It has been ingrained in our minds that drinking enough water is crucial to help regulate our basic body functions - like keeping our joints lubricated, preventing infections, and delivering nutrients to cells. Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood. Overall the body does not function well without water. Hair is the same. Oftentimes we overlook this basic need. I cannot stress enough… before putting any product in your hair, you must first

Joico’s Curl Confidence Defining Crème

Curls are all the craze. And the more you understand them, the easier life will be. The biggest ‘miss’ when working on curly hair is that we tend to remove more moisture than required to speed up the styling process. In reality, water acts as the transporter, distributing your product evenly for best end results. Joico’s Curl Confidence Defining Crème helps maintain that moisture. You all know we are a big fan of layering product. When working with 3A – 3C hair, we added a leave in conditioner prior to applying Joico’s Curl Confidence Defining Crème. This was only to create a solid foundation and eliminate wasting of product. As always, less is more. We started with a loonie size of product, really working it in from root to end to bring out the true definition of each curl. This allows us to leave hair to air dry or diffuse. When working on 4A hair we also added a medium hold gel for more control and definition.

start with WATER. Water acts as a transporter to get your product to the right places in your hair. It also acts as a buffer, equalizing the porosity for even distribution. Colour, product, and even shampoo and conditioner. Have you ever tried lathering without an accurate amount of water? It’s not a thing. Whether you’re at the shampoo basin or in the shower… Let’s make WATER your best friend.

Authentic Beauty Concept Hydrate Mask

Prepping hair for success starts at the sink. We all know that if hair is lacking moisture, it is also lacking protein. However, it will not accept protein without adequate moisture. The Hydrate Mask by Authentic Beauty Concept hits hair just right. It caters to a very wide range of hair types: 2C – 4C. It was fascinating to witness each curl type respond to the mask. Hair was softened and curls were defined. Remember - this is a mask, not a conditioner, and you need to give it time to work its charm. Apply a generous amount, sit your client under the dryer or steamer and wait for the magic to happen as it detangles, hydrates and makes hair manageable for any style. Products like the Hydrate Mask are foundation setters and should be incorporated into your client’s regular hair routine. It’s perfect for backbar use, but do not miss the opportunity to retail this item for at-home use.

EFE Magazine 14 JUL | AUG 23 EFE
Here are the top three products for hydration.

If you don’t have this product at your station, you are truly missing out. It detangles, hydrates and sets hair. Depending on your hair type, less is more, and more is more when needed. For straight hair, it will eliminate fly-aways. For clients with curls, it will literally bring out every spiral. This is a foundational product, it will equalize the porosity in the hair and create a platform for you to do whatever is next. For best results, apply to damp hair for maximum distribution.

Bc bonacure peptide repair rescue sealed ends by schwarzkopf

Seal away all your hair problems with Peptide repair rescue sealed ends. We all know the ends of your hair really determine the finished product. Tattered, fried ends make it impossible to curl, flat iron or even give shine. This is something that affects all hair types. Your hair type will determine your approach. On coarse hair (4A –C) we recommend that you set the foundation. Prep the hair with water or leave in conditioner. This will ensure the hair has the proper hydration to accept products and reap the benefits. And on super fine hair, less is more. Sealed Ends brings life to any hair type. The results are immediate, and who doesn’t love to have some instant gratification? This product gives beautiful bouncy curls or an amazing blowout.

D’ANTAL

I could tell this story a million times and never tire of it. In fact, I think it gets better every time I tell it. There’s always something to add, and something more that I’m proud of. It’s not even my story but I feel like it belongs to me. His success, is my success. It means I did something right. Something I did as a parent stuck. Something that we did together manifested to this… It wasn’t luck, it was God. It wasn’t by chance; it was by choice. And it wasn’t a destination, it is his journey…. A journey that I am honored to be a part of.

“I always knew he would grow up to do great things.” Says every parent of a now successful person… or, how about “my child’s advanced,” or “I think they’re gifted, look at how they’re holding that pencil.”

I’m certain you’ve all heard those words before and you smile and nod knowing full well, their child is likely regular (no shade). So, I’m not here to blow smoke up your ass, just to give you some hard-core facts. Because my son, he’s actually “gifted.” He has literally beaten all the odds. And I am certain THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

“He’s early,” they said. Too early. But he was ready; he just needed a little assistance with a breathing tube, feeding tube, and eye covering because he was jaundice. He had to live in an incubator for weeks, with IVs everywhere. I was discharged in less than 24hrs and was told my son would be in hospital, indefinitely. Unwillingly,

I left in tears with the only comfort knowing he was in God’s hands. He wasn’t digesting his food, so he wasn’t gaining weight. His tiny veins would collapse every day, and they eventually had to shave the sides of his head to administer his medication there, through intravenous. They said, there was some bleeding in his brain. They said, developmentally he would be behind. They said, his small and large motor skills would be underdeveloped. They said, they said, they said… Meanwhile, he said, “I’ve got this.”

In under a week, D’antal was off his breathing tube and breathing on his own. By week two he was no longer Jaundice. By week three, he was digesting his food and gaining weight. By week four, he no longer required intravenous. By week five the feeding tube came out. By week eight he was HOME. And he was ready to show the world who he was. But not without a few obstacles of course. *Disclaimer*… I think one of my kid’s super powers is making everything look easy… And I know most times it is not, but his will to succeed always gets him there.

EFE Magazine 16 JUL | AUG 23
SAMPSON,

So, let’s fast-forward to the day D’antal said “Mom, I’m going to law school.” At that moment I knew my son was going to be a Lawyer. Two weeks later he wrote and scored highly on his LSAT. Two months later he was accepted into Law school. Four months later he started his journey, in a new city, a new apartment and a new circle of friends. When the pandemic hit, he went from the classroom to his bedroom... Not sure how he did it, but he was able to stay motivated and focused on the task at hand. His end goal was to graduate and work for one of the top firms in the country. He did it! It took three years, all while training a puppy, nursing a torn Achilles injury, and contributing to the growth of Efe Magazine. On June 27th D’antal got called to the Ontario bar. I’m at a loss for words; it would be an understatement to just say that I’m proud. I have not yet figured out the words to truly express how this accomplishment makes me feel as his mom. But if I had to take this feeling back to another big moment, it would be watching him conquer life at 28 weeks old, jumping

every hurdle before he even knew what life was. Despite everything, you did it. Your life path was not paved with gold. Despite the discomfort in every scenario, you stood tall and created your space even though there were people who questioned whether or not you deserved to be there. But you created your own seat. You have not only changed the world for yourself, but for all others coming up after you. You have set an example for those who have never seen a lawyer within themselves. You will be seen by the world, but more importantly you give hope to those who aspire to authentically be themselves while being great. This is a big accomplishment, but know that every accomplishment you have conquered has been equally important at every stage of his life. They all prepared you for this day. It is my pleasure to introduce to you, D’antal Sampson, J.D. You did it kiddo. I love you the most most most.

SAMPSON, J.D.

INTRODUCING LaPLUME:

ELEVATING THE ART OF Self-Care

Discover the timeless beauty rituals that connect your inner and outer self with LaPlume. With a deep-rooted passion for spa and wellness treatments, we have curated a collection of luxurious experiences inspired and executed flawlessly by wellness & beauty professionals. As a brand, we strive to preserve the integrity of ancient beauty rituals, promoting a fusion of rejuvenation experiences that transcend time.

My Journey of Sharing Beauty and Wellness Secrets

For over two decades, I have immersed myself in various industries, ranging from education to wealth management to business development. However, owning a rejuvenation business was my calling. Combining my degree in Education and French language and literature, along with my love for sharing beauty and health secrets, led to the creation of LaPlume.

Our Approach to Holistic Self-Care

At LaPlume, we believe in embracing the whole body and addressing the mindset and physical aspects of self-care. Through our rejuvenation rituals and carefully curated tools, we create a stronger connection, amplify wellness benefits, and cultivate deeper beauty.

Meet Our Founders

Raised by matriarchs who understood the importance of self-care long before it became a trend, I have been immersed in the world of beauty my entire life. As a young girl, I would watch my grandmother, aunt, and mother indulge in salon visits and spa treatments as a natural way of life. This upbringing, combined with my personal interest and dedication to learning, has led me to share everything I’ve experienced and acquired through certifications in mindfulness, growth mindset, beauty, and holistic modalities.

The Journey That Birthed LaPlume

Inspired by our love for the pampering pleasures of life, we have always wanted to create a resource where we would not only share but invite others to enjoy the experiences we rave about.

Laplume was born during unexpected twists and turns, including the loss of our son and the birth of our daughter. These experiences gave us the courage and resources to bring LaPlume to life. Founded on our dreams as a family and the inspiration drawn from overcoming adversity, LaPlume is a testament to the power of invested self-care.

A Vision for the Future

In five years, LaPlume envisions having multiple homes for product distribution, expanding our reach and impact. Our aim is to become the village that everyone speaks of and aspires to join. However, our goal is not to create franchises; instead, we seek to establish a global well of holistic and beauty practitioners, offering accessible rejuvenation services and expert advice. We envision a world where individuals can invest in the tune up of their bodies while nurturing their mindset, spirit, and beauty.

Who I am:

I consider myself a servant to the professional beauty industry. I started in the beauty industry in 1999 and worked for many years with the top manufacturer and brands in the industry. I deeply care about making a difference in this industry and felt I could impact more salon professionals by focusing on real industry needs and developing solutions. I am a proud partner with Green Circle Salons and obviously the founder of Salon S.O.S.

How do salons benefit?

Salons benefit from working with a company that has the unique skill set of having both a wealth of industry experience AND marketing expertise. We are FROM the industry, FOR the industry. We understand the various challenges of the beauty industry and know how to implement marketing solutions to address those challenges. We hold salon professionals’ hands when needed to guide them through the complex world of digital, but best of all, we usually take care of everything for them so that they can focus on what they do best – serving their salon and spa clients. reader,

As the summer sun graces us with its warm presence, it’s the season to revamp our makeup routines. Summer is all about effortless beauty, glowing skin and a touch of playfulness. Get ready to look your best with these stunning makeup trends that capture the essence of sunkissed beauty.

Fresh and Glowing Skin: This is a personal favorite. The trend of embracing natural beauty and focusing on skincare will never go out of style, especially during the summer months. Bid farewell to heavy foundations and opt for a more minimalistic approach to achieving a fresh-faced look. Embrace lightweight, dewy finishes with tinted moisturizers and concealers to allow your natural skin to gleam through. Less is always

SUMMER

more. To add the perfect sun-kissed touch, pair your fresh skin with flush cheeks. Peachy and coral tone blushes are particularly effective in creating a healthy and youthful appearance. Apply the soft blush by stippling into the apples of your cheeks, blending upward and outward for a natural and lifted glow. Lastly, don’t forget to add a touch of radiance to top off your fresh look. A subtle highlighter applied to the high points of your face such as cheekbones, brow bones and the bridge of your nose will give your complexion a luminous boost. Embrace the summer sun and let this classic skin trend leave you looking radiant and effortlessly beautiful.

Gloss and Shine: Get ready to indulge in the come back of high-shine, glossy lips and embrace a luscious pout this summer. Start by prepping your lips with a sunscreen balm to protect the skin from any damage. A touch of gloss can transform your entire makeup look, providing a refreshing and dewy finish that screams summer. Glossy textures not only make your lips appear fuller, but also adds a youthful

element to your makeup. You can choose from natural tone glosses, or if you are feeling bolder and more playful, choose a more vibrant pop of color to your look. Keep your favorite gloss handy throughout the day, making sure your lips stay hydrated in the heat and as a bonus, irresistibly shiny all summer long.

Soft Liner: For the eyes, one of our go-to, easy summer looks is a softer, smoked-out liner. Embrace a more relaxed an effortless approach this season. Using eyeshadow or a pencil, smoke out your lash line for a subtle and more sultry effect. Experiment with earthy, natural tones such as browns and bronzes to create a beautiful, yet understated eye look. Blend the colour along your lash line, extending it slightly beyond the outer corner if you desire a more delicate winged effect. This soft-liner technique adds dimension to your eyes while maintaining a fresh and natural appearance. It is a versatile look that can be worn during the day or enhanced for an evening glam.

INCLUSIVITY IN your SPACE

At Efe Magazine, we believe in the power of diversity and inclusion to transform the salon industry. As diversity leaders in the beauty industry, it is our privilege to guide salon owners and professionals on their journey toward creating inclusive and diverse environments. In today’s ever-evolving world, embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage for businesses. Salons, as spaces of creativity, selfexpression, and personal care, have a unique opportunity to lead the way in creating inclusive environments. By cultivating an atmosphere that celebrates diversity and promotes inclusivity, salon owners and professionals can ensure that all clients feel valued, respected, and comfortable. In this article, we will explore practical steps to foster inclusivity and diversity in a salon setting.

1. Educating and Empowering Salon Staff:

As the backbone of any salon, staff members play a crucial role in creating an inclusive environment. Implement comprehensive diversity and inclusion training programs that encompass cultural competency, empathybuilding, and the identification of unconscious biases. By equipping your team with the knowledge and skills to navigate diverse client interactions, you can foster a salon culture that celebrates differences and promotes respectful engagement.

2. Championing Representation and Visibility:

Recognize the importance of representation within your salon staff. Actively recruit and hire professionals from diverse backgrounds, reflecting the communities you serve. Encourage staff members to bring their authentic selves to work, embracing their unique qualities, perspectives, and talents. By championing diversity within your team, you create a positive and inspiring atmosphere that clients can identify with.

3. Language and Communication:

Language is a powerful tool in creating an inclusive salon environment. Encourage staff members to use inclusive and gender-neutral language when interacting with clients and colleagues. Foster an atmosphere of respect and open communication, where all individuals feel comfortable expressing their needs and preferences. Remember, inclusivity begins with the words we choose.

4. Accessible and Welcoming Spaces:

Ensure that your salon is physically accessible to individuals of all abilities. Conduct an accessibility audit to identify and address potential barriers. Provide appropriate seating, ramps, and accessible restroom facilities. Train staff to offer assistance to clients with disabilities and prioritize their comfort and needs. By creating a welcoming space, you send a powerful message of inclusivity.

EFE Magazine 30 JUL | AUG 23 FOSTERING

5. Embracing Diverse Beauty Standards: Expand your salon’s product offerings and service menu to cater to a wide range of beauty needs. Stock an inclusive range of hair care products, cosmetics, and styling tools that cater to diverse hair textures, skin tones, and cultural preferences. Equip your staff with the skills and knowledge to provide exceptional service to clients of all backgrounds.

6. Celebrating Diversity and Cultural Awareness: Create opportunities for celebration and education by incorporating diverse cultural events and holidays into your salon’s calendar. Host events, share educational resources, and engage with your clients and staff members to learn about their unique traditions and customs. By embracing diversity and promoting cultural awareness, you foster a sense of belonging and respect for all.

7. Active Community Engagement:

Extend your salon’s commitment to inclusivity beyond its physical space. Engage with local organizations, community initiatives, and advocacy groups that promote diversity and inclusion. Partner with like-minded businesses to amplify your impact. By actively participating in community events and projects, you demonstrate your salon’s dedication to making a positive difference.

At Efe Magazine our mission is to empower salon owners and professionals to create inclusive and diverse spaces. By following these actionable steps, you can foster an environment where clients feel valued, respected, and represented. Embrace the power of diversity and inclusion, knowing that it not only enriches the salon experience but also contributes to the industry’s success. Together, let us champion inclusivity and shape a future where every salon becomes a haven of diversity and acceptance.

THE FITTING ROOM

Introducing Brian and Danny, the dynamic duo behind the exciting new venture at The Fitting Room in Toronto. A true bromance with a shared passion for barbering and a vision for creating an extraordinary experience, they have embarked on a journey to redefine the traditional barbershop concept. Together, they are building a space that goes beyond exceptional haircuts, encompassing inclusivity, community, and innovation. Through their commitment to providing a gender-neutral environment, offering diverse services like a coffee shop and retail area, and supporting local brands, Brian and Danny are reshaping the barber culture in Toronto. Get ready to step into a vibrant, welcoming space where expertise meets creativity, and where everyone is invited to be a part of this remarkable journey at The Fitting Room.

Brian:

“I knew Danny before I even decided to open my own shop – I took him under my wing and trained him. We met at Li Boys and did a lot of training together, and when I opened up my shop, that’s when he decided to come to Toronto.”

34 JUL | AUG 23

ROOM TORONTO

Danny:

“I took the leap to Toronto – I always wanted to work downtown, and work alongside Brian. So, when Brian decided to take his leap and open his shop - it was a no brainer. I’d always wanted to get into the city, and the barber culture downtown is way more vibrant than where I was working.”

JUL | AUG 23
Photography by: Catherine Ligouri

What is the barber culture like?

Danny: “Not just the barber culture… I’d say the culture generally is different in Toronto. It’s more versatile, there’s way more style influence etc.”

Brian: “There’s a lot more character – everyone has a unique style and everyone looks different. As barbers, it allows you to be more creative.”

Danny: “The city has allowed me to draw influence from so many things as a barber, but also opened up my eyes to different things. For example, I was able to bring my candle brand into the shop at the Fitting Room because we wanted to do next-level men’s grooming, so we introduced candles for men and home products for men, and I was able to build a collaboration between the two. It opened up my eyes to a whole different world.”

The Fitting Room was already a staple in the GTA barbering scene, it was well-known, and successful. What made you open a new shop?

Brian: “A few things – we felt like we were outgrowing the space, so we wanted to have more room to work with in our shop. We also wanted to create more of an experience for our customers – we didn’t want it to feel just like a barbershop. We wanted to create more of an experience with culture.”

Danny: “And community – we really want to be community driven. We don’t want to be somewhere people just come to get their haircut and go. We want it to be a “lived-in” space.

Brian: “Now that we’ve got something bigger, we’re going to be able to host more activations and events to build that community. Adding the coffee shop and the retail area to our space will amplify this experience for our customers.”

Danny: “Once we got into the retail space with our own brands, we came up with this idea where we as barbers can put on for the barber space but also collaborate with other brands to reach new heights.”

What do you want to see happen in this space?

Danny: “We definitely want more involvement with our team and our barbers, we definitely want to create an environment where people are growing and reaching their goals – not just Brian and I.”

What specifically do you want to see for your team? What do you hope they’ll get out of it?

Brian: “We want them to get solid education, go to events, and grow their networks. With the way we’re building out this space, we’re doing it in a way that’s inclusive. We don’t want the barbershop to be male-dominant, we want women to be comfortable in the space as well. Whether that’s getting a cut, shopping at the retail space, grabbing a coffee – we just want a space that’s really diverse.”

Danny: “We want it to be gender neutral. We understand that when you walk into a barbershop, it can be intimidating. You walk in, a bunch of dudes look at you, and if you don’t know anybody, it might not be welcoming. We want our space to be comfortable and warm.”

Brian: “That’s why we’re adding a second entrance so that if you want to just grab a coffee, you don’t have to walk through a barbershop to get there.”

EFE Magazine 36 JUL | AUG 23

So you’ve considered the small details, and how to foster a space that people from all walks of life can appreciate?

Brian: “Even the colours and materials that we’re going to use in the space will be gender neutral – we want it to be inclusive and welcoming. We want to encourage people to come in and buy stuff. Even if you’re not getting a cut or a coffee… just come”

Do you know what brands you want to work with in your retail space?

Danny: “Our goal is to have a lot of local brands, we want to support local brands and make them feel like they have a home. I have an online business, and being able to have a store presence makes me feel like the sky’s the limit. We want to give that experience to others as well to have that same opportunity”

What’s going to set you guys apart from the rest of the barbershops in the city? What makes this space different?

Brian: “At the end of the day, we’re not reinventing the wheel. I don’t think what we’re doing is something that’s never been done in the past. I just think we have something special here. What’s going to make people want to come here is the vibe and experience we create. People are going to come here not only because we cut your hair, but because of the atmosphere we’ve built – which a lot of shops lack.”

Danny: “We’ve already elevated the haircutting experience. Our reputation kind of speaks for itself, in terms of the haircuts and the service, and we’re building on that.”

Brian: “It’s also exposure – because the shop is bigger, the amount of traffic that’s going to be coming in here will grow. The shop will have its own clientele, the coffee shop will have its regulars, and the brands will bring in customers. The whole network together will be able to build from each other and find even more success.”

Brian: “We’re also going to have a patio outside, where people can enjoy a coffee and the shop vibe can extend outdoors. That’ll definitely create some buzz and generate more foot-traffic for the shop as well.”

d) Challenging norms, pushing boundaries, and constantly evolving.

- If you answered mostly c’s: You resonate with 3A, 3B, or 3C hair, reflecting a vibrant and expressive personality. You are known for your big personality and love for partying. Sometimes you can be boisterous, but once you’ve had your fun, your confidence becomes your favourite asset. Like curly hair, you embrace the ‘frizz’ that comes with it, and understand that it adds character. You know how to work with your skillset and shine like the star you are.

- If you answered mostly d’s: You possess the characteristics of 4A, 4B, or 4C hair, embodying a bold and versatile personality. You are resilient and incredibly resourceful. Although misunderstood by many, you know that you are extremely creative and can do anything you put your mind to. Like kinky/coily hair, you challenge traditional norms and makes people question preconceived notions. You embrace your own mysterious nature and believe in the power of natural beauty.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Canada: home of the free.

At least that is what our parents’, parents’, parents were taught. For generations, people migrated to Canada to create a better life for their family. Their goal to give their children opportunities they never had and also to support the family they left behind. Taking a leap of faith, they left everything they knew to become everything they had hoped they would be. But even after the dust settles and you are exactly where you wanted to be, you still miss home. What is it that pulls everyone back? Whether it’s the food or family, everybody longs for the days when they can be home.

This was my third time traveling to this beautifully diverse country. My husband is Turkish and speaks the language fluently, which always makes the experience feel so intimate. As a tourist, I get to experience this culturally rich country from a local’s perspective, which I think is the best way to travel if you’re fortunate enough.

For starters, let’s talk food. Turkish cuisine is very meat heavy. I don’t eat red meat, so I stick to more of the Mediterranean side of their diet, fish and the vegetarian ‘meze.’ A meze is a collection of small dishes either served as an appertizer course, or as a main meal if served with spirits. If you like olive oil and garlic, this is your haven. That said, the chicken doner is also always a top choice and a must try. Doner stands are

everywhere in Istanbul, and I hear the best choice is meat durum. You wouldn’t picture Istanbul on the water, but it is surrounded. Dining at any of their fish restaurants is something we always do - the service is the best I’ve ever experienced, AND it comes with a view. The desserts are divine and different; baklava, (Turkish Delight obviously), Turkish coffee, helva, and a personal favourite, katmer, which is a delicious dessert

that is a crisp phyllo dough dessert that contains pistachios and ice cream. Türkiye is famous for ice cream, but I would skip it for one of the above. I think about this dessert more than I should…

The feeling of the Old City of Istanbul is unmatched. We visit the Grand Bazaar when we’re there. This is where you can find the famous and legendary Turkish carpets, lanterns,

souvenirs, jewelry, and high quality ‘knock offs.’ We have picked up many a home décor item that you won’t find at your local Homesense.

Most of Istanbul can be traveled by foot or Uber, which is a great way to take in the extravagant buildings including mosques, palaces, and Old City buildings. The magnificent and picturesque Bosporus Strait, where we got married in 2018, is a natural waterway that forms part of the continental boundary between Asia and Europe.

There is so much to explore both above ground and underground! A standout for me is the “Basilica Cistern” which is located near the Haiga of Sophia and the Blue Mosque, an underground waterway system with an eerie and mysterious two headed medusa holding up structure. I have never tried a Hammam (Turkish bath), but this is on my ‘to do list’ for our next visit.

Street cats are everywhere in Türkiye. I am a huge animal person, so at first it was concerning seeing all the street cats, but they really are a huge part of the culture. They are well loved and respected even though they reside on the street. You will always see restaurants feeding the cats after (and sometimes during) service.

From Istanbul you can take a short flight to the most magical place on earth, Cappadocia. Not only are there real ‘fairy chimneys’, with fascinating world history, but here you can take the most incredible balloon rides to watch the sunrise… breathtaking! This really should be on everyone’s bucket list. This one is difficult to put into words, if you’ve ever been anywhere that the pictures just don’t do it justice, this is the same.

Time – you need A LOT of time to visit Türkiye. I have travelled most of Europe and as most would agree, the South is always the most incredible. Türkiye is no different, from the super yachts in Bodrum, to the sunsets in Oludeniz, it’s as if you’re in a dream (and much more affordable to Greece). We vacationed here last year with our 3-year-old son. We beached everyday and dined by the water at night in the small towns. It is a very family friendly destination. If you’re thinking of travelling to Istanbul, or anywhere in the south of Türkiye, you will not be disappointed!

Istanbul holds a special place in my heart for many reasons, but we as a family have built some incredible memories.
