Principal Keynote Speaker Dr. Mohammed Bin Ibrahim Al-Suwaiyel, KACST, KSA Dr. Mohammed Bin Ibrahim Al-Suwaiyel is the current President of the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in Riyadh, KSA, and since July 2007, also holds a ministerial rank in the government of KSA. Having studied for a B.Sc. degree in General Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), KSA, he then obtained M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Southern California, USA. During his time as an academic, Dr. Al-Suwaiyel delivered a number of courses in Computer Science, Mathematics and Data Security at King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals, and also at King Saud University. His research interests centred on Discrete Mathematics, Computational Complexity, Algorithms and Cryptography on which he has published a number of papers in journals and at international conferences. Dr. Al-Suwaiyel secured a number of appointments at King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals, namely the Chairman of the Systems Engineering Department, Chairman of Computer Science Department and thereafter Dean of the Computer Science and Engineering College, from 1979 – 1991. From 1991 until 2003, he was the Vice President of the Research Institutes at KACST and subsequently, served as Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission from March 2003 to July 2007. He serves on the board of numerous and diverse bodies, most notably he is a member of the Board of Directors of Saudi Aramco since December 2001, a member of the Board of Directors of the Military Industries Organization, a member of the Supreme Council for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, International Award for Translation, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the King Abdul Aziz and his Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity. Further, Dr. Al-Suwaiyel is the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Prince Salman Center for Disability Research, a member of the International Advisory Council of King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) and a member of the International Advisory Council of the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC). He is also a member of the Supreme Council for the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Award for Inventors and the Gifted, and the Chairman of the Management Committee of the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center. Amongst his various awards are the Medal of Merit (First Class), presented by the late King Fahad in July 1985, the Best Teacher Award at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in June 1989, and the Middle East CEO of the Year Award in March 2007.
Keynote Speakers Dr. Francisco Marmolejo, World Bank Group, USA Dr. Francisco Marmolejo serves as the World Bank Group’s Lead Tertiary Education Specialist and Coordinator of the Network of Higher Education Specialists. Previously, he was the founding Executive Director of the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration, a network of more than 160 higher education institutions and organizations. He has held a number of prestigious and varied positions including Vice President for Administration and Academic Vice President at the University of the Americas in Mexico, an International Consultant at the OECD Programme on Institutional Management of Higher Education in Paris. He was part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and World Bank peer review teams conducting evaluations of higher education in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Dr. Marmolejo serves on numerous advisory or governing boards at a variety of universities and professional organizations. He holds an M.A. in Organizational Administration from the Autonomous University of San Luis PotosĂ, and has conducted doctoral work at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Mr. Tony Swainston, ECM Connections, UK Mr. Tony Swainston is the CEO of ECM Connections in the UK and a world-renowned coach, trainer, researcher and speaker. He has a B.Sc. Honors degree in Physics and an M.A. in Leadership and Management. He works in the private and public sectors with individuals, groups and whole organizations on leadership, management, cultural change, coaching and motivation. Mr. Swainston is a qualified coach, an NLP practitioner, a practitioner in hypnotherapy and a practitioner in Time-Line therapy. Before he founded his company, ECM Connections Ltd, in 2006, he worked for the Government on effective professional development in education and prior to this, he was a teacher for 20 years. Mr. Swainston has written and published four books. His passion is for developing individuals and thereby impacting on their personal and professional life. He believes that this is the way that organizations are truly able to flourish and grow.
Dr. Cindy Gunn, American University of Sharjah, UAE Dr. Cindy Gunn is the Director of the Faculty Development Center, and Associate Professor in the Department of English at the American University of Sharjah (AUS). She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Bath, UK, an M.A. from the School for International Training, Vermont, USA and a B.A. from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. Before moving to the United Arab Emirates in 2001, she lived and taught in Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, Turkey and the United States. Her main research paradigm is Exploratory Practice which emphasizes examining and reflecting upon the contributions that teachers and learners make to the learning process.
