Dr. David Creswell Dr. David Creswell, PhD., is an associate Professor at the Psychology Department at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the United State. Dr.David’s research focuses broadly on understanding what makes people resilient under stress. Specifically, he conducts community intervention studies, laboratory studies of stress and coping, and neuroimaging studies to understand how various stress management strategies alter coping and stress resilience. For example, he is currently working on studies that test how mindfulness meditation training impacts the brain, peripheral stress physiological responses, and stress-related disease outcomes in at-risk community samples. David also explores how the use of simple strategies (self-affirmation, rewarding activities, cognitive reappraisal) can buffer stress and improve problem-solving under pressure. David has made some recent research forays into other areas, such as in describing the role of unconscious processes in learning and decision making, developing new theory and research on behavioral priming, and in building a new field of health neuroscience. He is the lead investigator in the health and human performance at CMU.

Author: Saba Ghayas, Iqra Safdar, University of Sargodha, Pakistan Title: “Construction and Validation of Life Regrets Scale for Pakistani Elderly Muslim Population” Abstract: The present study aimed at construction and validation of life regrets scale among elderly people of Pakistan. In phase I of the study I, an initial item pool comprised of 70 items was developed and items of the scale were empirically determined for content validation. In the phase II, Factorial validity and internal consistency was determined on the sample (N= 506) of older adults, including both men (n= 317) and women (n= 189). Age range of the sample was from 60 to 85 years. Factor analysis revealed three factor solution with 36 items, which accounted for 32.63% cumulative variance with .92 alpha reliability of full Life Regrets Scale. The three factors were named as Familial Regrets, Religious Regrets, Personal Growth and Related Regrets respectively. In the study II, Confirmatory factor analysis was carried out on the sample of two hundred elderly people and model fit indices confirmed the three factor structure resolution with the data. In the study III, another sample of one hundred elderly participants was recruited to find the convergent validity of the Life Regrets Scale. Positive correlation of LRS with the depression and death anxiety provided its evidence of strong convergent validity. Author: Irwan Nuryana Kurniawan, Universitas Islam Indonesia,Indonesia Title: “Exploring and Validating the Questionnaire of Takwa to Allah Taala with Indonesian Islamic Boarding School Students’ Samples” Abstract: Although Takwa kepada Allah Subahanahu wa Taala became one of the main indicators for the success of national education goals, so far the learning evaluation at all educational levels in Indonesia only provides information on academic achievement alone. The present study is expected to provide a valid and reliable learning evaluation instrument related to non-academic important indicators of national education objectives. The current study is a further study aimed at exploring psychometric properties Takwa kepada Allah Subahanahu wa Taala Questionnaire (KTA; Fikri & Kurniawan, 2013). The study involved 220 Islamic boarding school students, comprised 57.3% male students and 42.7% female students, and their age ranges 15 years old to 27 years old (M=17.7, SD=1.90). for the purposes of validating the KTA, Surrender to God Scale (SGS; Wong-McDonald & Gorsuch, 2000), Flourishing Scale (FS; Diener, Wirtz, Tov, Kim-Prieto, Choi, Oishi, & Biswas-Diener, 2009), Negative Affect Subscale of SPANE (NA Subscale of SPANE; Diener, Wirtz, Tov, Kim-Prieto, Choi, Oishi, & Biswas-Diener, 2009), and Reynolds Short-Form of Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (RSF-MCSDS; Reynolds & Gerbasi, 1982) were administered to them. The result of exploratory factor analysis with principal axis factoring method and promax rotation method showed that the TKA is composed of 4 factors, namely Faith, Noble Character, Shalat, and Infaq and able to explain 59.27 total variance of Takwa kepada Allah Taala. The study also demonstrated the TKA having satisfactory psychometric evidences.

Title: “Construction and Validation of Life Regrets Scale for Pakistani Elderly Muslim Population” Abstract: This study is aimed to construct and validate a psychological instrument Al-Akhlaq Al-Karimah Quality of Life (AK-QOL) for Indonesian Muslims. This preliminary study involved 372 students of Universitas Islam Indonesia, divided into two studies, namely Study I of 192 students and Study II of 180 students. This study also included the Maqashid Shariah Quality of Life (MS-QOL; Mohamad et al., 2015) and World Health Organizaton Quality of Life-Bref Version (WHOQOL-Bref; WHO, 1996) as validation criteria and Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale-Short Form (MCSDS-SF; Reynolds, 1982) as control variable. This study went through exploratory factor analysis to explore the possibilities of what underlying components of AK-QOL that can assess muslims quality of life. AK-QOL-Form W (44 items) and Form I (48 items) were utilized in this study which both has fulfilled the requirements for analysis. These questionnaires are reliable shown by the value of Cronbach, for AK-QOL-Form W α = 0.934, and Form I α = 0.937. Results shows that AK-QOL-Form W constructed two factors with eigenvalues ≥ 1 and shows variance as much as 9.384 and 2.594 for Form-W, and 7.762 for Form-I. Both factors simultaneously are able to describe the total variance of AK-QOL as much as 54.449% for Form-W, and one factor Form-I is able to describe the total variance AK-QOL as much as 55.443%. The finding of moderate to strong correlation with criterion variables demonstrated early evidences of the validity of AK-QOL. This study shows that AK-QOL can be utilized to assess the quality of life of Muslims in Indonesia. Authors: Fani Nurtjahjo and Ahmad Rusdi, Islamic University of Indonesia, Indonesia Title: “Islamic Wisdom Scale - Development and Validation” Abstract: Concept of wisdom oftenly associated with positive psychological character, such as integrity, maturity, happiness, and life satisfaction (Bergsma & Ardelt, 2012). Wisdom also considered as human peak of excellence (Baltes & Kunzmann, 2003). Former researchers concern of wisdom concept was also including the scale development. Nevertheless, the concept of wisdom among moslem people may appear different from western culture. Particular values, belief, and spiritual experiences allows someone to have different psychological experience. In consequence, there might be different perspective about wisdom between Western and Islamic values. Wisdom in eastern culture tend to focus on spirituality (Grof, 2013), so does Islamic wisdom which emphasize in religious virtue. Moslem personality or trait will be more appropriate to be measured with Islamic perspective (Ahmad, Ismail, & Tekke, 2015). This study is an attempt to develop wisdom scale in Islamic perspective and validate it among Indonesian moslem undergraduate student. Validation of this scale is using exploratory factor analyses and based on other criterion (convergent and discriminant validity). The implication of this scale development will be disscused later. Authors: Arief Fahmie, Dwi Despiana, Rizka Dara Vonna, Dhieny Agrina Khairani and Elisa Kusrini, Islamic University of Indonesia, Indonesia Title: “Development of Quality of Work Life Scale in Small Medium Enterprises and Designs of Psychological Intervention at Individual Level” Abstract: To maintain and improve QWL in SMEs, the measurement and development program conducted by business organizations are crucial for stakeholders (management, employee, government, and community). This article aims to describe the development of QWL Scale in SMEs in Indonesia and the designs of individual intervention. Collecting data from 196 employees, Study 1 used RASCH model to identify item fit order, person fit order, and Differential Item Functioning (DIF). The value of Cronbach alpha is .882. Study 2 explained two designs of individual QWL development program: dzikir (remembrance of God)-based relaxation (DR) and appreciative inquiry coaching (AIC). DR is an islamic psychological intervention in which clients recite repeated words of purity (e.g. La ilaha illaAllah or no God but Allah) regularly during relaxation with intention not only to evoke state of relaxation but also to conduct good deeds. Next, AIC as an application of positive psychology at workplace consists of five steps: definition, discovery, dream, design and destiny. The implementations of research in organization are discussed.

Authors: Muhammad Safdar, International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan 1. Muhammad Safdar 2. Gulfam Ali Safdar 3. Muhammad Abdul Malik 4. Kamran Masood Title: “Positive Psychology and Islamic Spiritualization Country: Pakistan” Abstract: Up until the September of 2017, Saudi Arabia was the only country left in the world that did not allow women to drive. However, that all changed when King Salman finally issued a decree that granted women the right to drive their own vehicles. This reform has been a long waited achievement for many people but to some others this seems like a very bad idea for various reasons. The current study is a mixed method research that aims to measure the amount of societal acceptance of this particular change, especially in the context of a traditional culture going through a major transition. The study will look at how lifting the women driving ban in Saudi Arabia will affect the levels of satisfaction of life and happiness in the citizens of Saudi Arabia. This study also aims to examine the relationship between an individual’s perception of Saudi women driving and their level of openness. It is part of a longitudinal research project and will be conducted throughout the span of three years which will cover the periods of time when women do not have permission to drive and after the women driving ban is lifted (three months and three years later). The sample will contain approximately 1000 male and female Saudi citizens from different regions, educational and ethnic backgrounds. The participants’ responses will be collected electronically, coded and analyzed using the SPSS by applying descriptive statistics, T-test and correlation. Title: “The Effectiveness of the Mindful Jeddah Program in a Saudi Arabian Academic Society” Abstract: Recently, mindfulness based therapy programs have been successful in relieving stress and improving overall well-being of people. However, almost all of these programs have been made with the Western and European population in mind. There are almost no comprehensive and culture sensitive mindfulness based wellbeing programs in the Arab society. The Arab society has a rich culture which highly values spirituality. The aim of this control group pre and posttest experimental study was to investigate the effectiveness of a new mindfulness based wellbeing program-‘ Mindful Jeddah Program’ on a Saudi Arabian academic society. 26 participants from a private university in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia completed a 3 week program after being randomly assigned to either the control group or the experimental group. A paired samples t-test revealed that the Mindful Jeddah program has a significant effect on life satisfaction. However, no significant effect was seen on the other variables- well-being, stress, anxiety and spirituality. Implications of the program’s effectiveness and reasons for the results are discussed. Keywords: mindfulness, wellbeing, spirituality, life satisfaction, stress relief
