Foodbank readying for Christmas Brisbane Produce Market wholesalers have stepped up their donations leading up to Christmas to aid Foodbank at a time when its warehouse traditionally requires the most donations. Foodbank is feeding 88,000 people in need, per day, in Queensland and the number is growing. Over 300 charities are registered with Foodbank Queensland and have the job of collecting from the Colmslie-based warehouse and distributing the food. Growers receive a tax deduction if they forward any of their surplus crop to the organisation. To make a donation, contact Foodbank on 07 3395 8422, email foodbank@westnet.com.au or visit www.foodbank.com.au.

Pollies help solve a Telstra mishap A Telstra contractor, working on the National Broadband Network, brought the Brisbane Markets lines to a halt in November. However, it was the might of our politicians that helped the community get back up and running. The trouble began when a contractor mistakenly cut the lines to the Brisbane Markets site on a Friday morning, but repairs looked like they couldn’t take place until the next week. Brisbane Markets Limited worked closely with Telstra, supported by the State Minister for Agriculture, the Lord Mayor and our local Member to ensure that the repairs were treated as a priority.

Our own Telstra tower A new Telstra tower has been built next to the Brisbane Produce Market trading floor. Telstra has completed work, raising the communications tower at the southern end of Building C. The tower was built in November with work involving removing the antenna equipment from the roof of Building C. The work has included erecting a fence around the base of its column and improving the surrounds with a garden relandscape.

Building D roofing Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) has deferred indefinitely any move to demolish and redevelop Building D. As a result, work is progressing to finalise the design of the proposed new roof structure, extending from Building D to the Covered Unloading Area. BML will also review the use of the preexisting office/cafe areas at the eastern and western ends of Building D, and consider the options in relation to the future use of this space.

Industry news bites AUSVEG back to the Gold Coast AUSVEG has confirmed it will hold its 2015 national gathering on the Gold Coast at Jupiters Casino, from 25-27 June. The convention was held there in 2013, while Cairns hosted this year’s convention. It was held in Brisbane in 2011. An estimated 1100 domestic and international delegates attended this year’s national convention. The convention, trade show and awards for excellence attracts growers, suppliers, wholesalers and agribusinesses to the event.

As in past years, Brisbane Markets Limited will join the Central Markets Association of Australia to exhibit at the 2015 AUSVEG conference on the Gold Coast.

Aussies want first bite Producer groups have joined forces lobbying governments to demand they buy local for the massive food orders placed by public hospitals, schools, jails and the defence forces. The powerful Australian Food and Grocery Council, the National Farmers Federation and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union want more support for local industry and farmers and a change in public procurement policies. They want locally grown and made foods to win any government or public-sector supply tender as long as the Australian product costs no more than 25% more than any overseas bid. About two-thirds of all food and drinks bought for government-run institutions were sourced from overseas, according to federal Finance Department figures published in 2012.

Vietnam blocks Aussie fruit exports

Pollies, please take note

Australia’s Department of Agriculture has confirmed that Vietnam has ‘raised concerns with Australia’s fruit fly management systems and is considering suspending trade in Australian fruit’.

Apple and pear growers want the country’s politicians to pay more attention to their industry.

The market is worth about $40 million, including grapes and cherries. Cherry Growers Australia says it’s a significant market that will affect this season’s harvest. The issue was sparked by an email received from a Vietnamese importer in November stating that they were shocked to be informed by the Vietnam Plan Protection Department that from the 1 January 2015, fresh fruit imports from Australia were not permitted. They further stated that they believed that this was unreasonable and unacceptable.

Apple and Pear Australia Limited CEO John Dollison said the industry has to step up and promote itself. “We need to tell people a lot more what’s been done in horticulture, that horticulture needs to get a much stronger voice,” Mr Dollison said. “It tends to get left behind livestock and dairy and we need to raise our profile to get the good news out there, because typically, people are only hearing the bad news.”

Eating fresh produce makes us happy Queensland research has found that eating large amounts of fruit and vegetables can make you happier,

“Eating about five fruits and five vegetables [per day] makes us the happiest we can be in that case.”

The University of Queensland study suggests eating eight or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day improves mental wellbeing as well as physical health.

Dr Mujcic said the effects were strongest among women, although he did not know why.

Health economics researcher Dr Redzo Mujcic from UQ’s school of pharmacy said the study involved more than 12,000 Australian adults. “What I wanted to look at is whether it improves also our mental wellbeing or mental health as well as physical health,” Dr Mujcic told 612 ABC Brisbane. “It comes up the more you eat the better, but there’s also some optimal points.

Queensland link to disease A Queensland nursery has been linked to farms in the Northern Territory reporting cases of Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus. Biosecurity Queensland has confirmed it’s investigating a Queensland nursery linked to the outbreak of a virus that’s crippled the Northern Territory’s melon industry, but has refused to provide exact details about the nursery, or nurseries, involved. Ten farmers have had their properties quarantined and told to destroy their crops. They’ve also had a two-year ban imposed on growing any crops related to the cucurbit family which includes cucumber and melons.

New chair for APAL The Apple and Pear Australia Limited (APAL) board has elected a new chairwoman, effective from 1 January 2015. Dr Michele Allan, who is currently the chairwoman of Meat and Livestock Australia, has joined the APAL board.

Gala dinner celebrated in style BY PETER HOCKINGS, BUNDABERG FRUIT AND VEGETABLE GROWERS (BFVG) The Wide Bay Burnett’s fruit, vegetable, nut and herb industry was celebrated in style at the Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers Biennial Gala Dinner on Saturday, 11 October 2014. The Civic Centre was brimming with growers, industry stakeholders and dignitaries to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the horticulture industry in the region. Almost 500 guests enjoyed a three course dinner comprising fresh local produce and value-added products showcasing the wide variety of Bundaberg’s premium products. Although too many to list here, we would once again like to thank those members who donated produce/products for the menu.

Growers Michael and Kelly McMahon, of Abbotsleigh Citrus, joined 500 people to celebrate.

Of course the Gala Dinner would not be as successful if not for the sponsors. Once again Woolworths supported the event as the major sponsor. Sincere thanks are also extended to other key sponsors - Sapphire sponsors Burnett Land and Machinery and Perfection Fresh Australia. Opal sponsors were Bayer Cropscience, Brisbane Produce Market, Central Queensland University and Steritech. Amethyst sponsors included Friends of Farming Families and Farming Families sponsors. The 2014 Gala Dinner saw the induction of three dedicated members of BFVG as Honorary Life Members of the Cooperative. Current Chairman Geoff Chivers, current Treasurer David Da Pra and former Chairman David De Paoli were recognised for their

Preparing for the work Christmas party BY SAL TRUJILLO, BRISBANE MARKETS LIMITED’S HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGER The staff Christmas party is an important work-related event

in their own time and are not supported by the company.

Therefore, a safe and enjoyable function can improve employee morale/engagement. However, as an employer you have a duty of care for your workers and other guests at work related functions such as the Staff Christmas Party. To manage this obligation, employers must take all reasonable practicable measures to minimise any risks.

•B ullying, harassment and discrimination at staff Christmas parties pose a greater risk as employees tend to loose self-control caused by alcohol consumption, they adopt a more relaxed behaviour and they might have the added impression that they are not being supervised. Several control measures can be implemented to manage this risk by ensuring that applicable policies are up to date, providing regular training to staff, reminding staff members

to have security available. • Food allergies are increasingly becoming more common among people, therefore managers must consider workers’ dietary requirements to minimise the risk of illness or injuries. Once this information is recorded it should be referred to in future functions. If catering is being provided by a third party, ensure that they check with your employees about their dietary requirements. • Providing transport can minimise the risk of an incident if the Christmas party is to be held off site. This is particularly important if alcohol will be consumed. Providing transport to and from the party can provide a clear indication when the function begins and ends.

Fresh produce should be refrigerated as soon as possible after peeling or cutting. Leftover cut produce should be discarded if left at room temperature for more than four hours. Make sure you keep fruit and vegetables in the crisper or on a shelf above your meat so there is no risk of blood and juice dripping onto fresh produce.
