Foodbank readying for Christmas Brisbane Produce Market wholesalers have stepped up their donations leading up to Christmas to aid Foodbank at a time when its warehouse traditionally requires the most donations. Foodbank is feeding 88,000 people in need, per day, in Queensland and the number is growing. Over 300 charities are registered with Foodbank Queensland and have the job of collecting from the Colmslie-based warehouse and distributing the food. Growers receive a tax deduction if they forward any of their surplus crop to the organisation. He said it was a year to reflect, with the 2013/14 financial year proving that plans are advancing to keep BML on track with its commitment to maintain, develop and operate an effective Central Market site. “Our stewardship of this site has again resulted in proven positive results,” Mr Joseph said.

Pollies help solve a Telstra mishap A Telstra contractor, working on the National Broadband Network, brought the Brisbane Markets lines to a halt in November. Telstra has completed work, raising the communications tower at the southern end of Building C. The tower was built in November with work involving removing the antenna equipment from the roof of Building C. The work has included erecting a fence around the base of its column and improving the surrounds with a garden relandscape.

Building D roofing Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) has deferred indefinitely any move to demolish and redevelop Building D. As a result, work is progressing to finalise the design of the proposed new roof structure, extending from Building D to the Covered Unloading Area. BML will also review the use of the preexisting office/cafe areas at the eastern and western ends of Building D, and consider the options in relation to the future use of this space.

Safety month a winner Brisbane Markets has marked October’s Safe Work Month celebrations with a series of work health and safety seminars, flyer giveaways and competitions to encourage the 4,000 people who work, or do business on the site daily, to stay safe. One competition rewarded workers onsite with a competition entry that they needed to correctly fill out and place in a barrel. Forklift driver Damien Mills, of Sun Produce, won a 48” Samsung HD LCD Led TV (valued at $808) for having the most correct entries. Another forklift driver, Wayne Lacey, from RW Pascoe, was awarded an iPad mini (valued at $325), for being the first correct safety questionnaire drawn from the barrel. To be eligible, entrants had to hold a current Brisbane Markets access card, forklift operator permit and the forklift being used must be registered

Australia’s Department of Agriculture has confirmed that Vietnam has ‘raised concerns with Australia’s fruit fly management systems and is considering suspending trade in Australian fruit’.

Apple and pear growers want the country’s politicians to pay more attention to their industry.

The market is worth about $40 million, including grapes and cherries. Cherry Growers Australia says it’s a significant market that will affect this season’s harvest. The issue was sparked by an email received from a Vietnamese importer in November stating that they were shocked to be informed by the Vietnam Plan Protection Department that from the 1 January 2015, fresh fruit imports from Australia were not permitted. They further stated that they believed that this was unreasonable and unacceptable.

Apple and Pear Australia Limited CEO John Dollison said the industry has to step up and promote itself. “We need to tell people a lot more what’s been done in horticulture, that horticulture needs to get a much stronger voice,” Mr Dollison said. “It tends to get left behind livestock and dairy and we need to raise our profile to get the good news out there, because typically, people are only hearing the bad news.”

Health economics researcher Dr Redzo Mujcic from UQ’s school of pharmacy said the study involved more than 12,000 Australian adults. “What I wanted to look at is whether it improves also our mental wellbeing or mental health as well as physical health,” Dr Mujcic told 612 ABC Brisbane. “It comes up the more you eat the better, but there’s also some optimal points.

Biosecurity Queensland has confirmed it’s investigating a Queensland nursery linked to the outbreak of a virus that’s crippled the Northern Territory’s melon industry, but has refused to provide exact details about the nursery, or nurseries, involved. Ten farmers have had their properties quarantined and told to destroy their crops. They’ve also had a two-year ban imposed on growing any crops related to the cucurbit family which includes cucumber and melons.

The cherry season is upon us and once again the Brisbane Produce Market has joined forces with Cherry Growers Australia to run an annual Queensland cherry campaign. Activities began in late November, including radio advertising and a cherry competition. One hundred lucky customers won a box of cherries from their local fruit shop, with one major prize winner receiving a $500 gift voucher. Fresh produce should be refrigerated as soon as possible after peeling or cutting. Leftover cut produce should be discarded if left at room temperature for more than four hours. Make sure you keep fruit and vegetables in the crisper or on a shelf above your meat so there is no risk of blood and juice dripping onto fresh produce.
