Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous
oxide (N2O), together commonly referred to as
'greenhouse gases' (GHG), are produced as the
result of natural microbial processes in the soil, with
or without human influence. In addition, other gases
are also produced as part of natural soil-plant-animal
interactions, such as ammonia, nitrogen, oxygen etc.
The issue to be addressed is the extent to which
man's activities, in this context the essential activity
of food production, influence these gaseous fluxes.
