Throughoutmythirtyyearsintelecommunications,Ihaveseen sweepingchangesbringneweconomicopportunityandimprovementtoourqualityoflife.AschairofTheRutgersCampaign, Iamnowwatchingequallydramaticforcesbringasimilar revolutioninhighereducation.

“TheRutgersCampaign:CreatingtheFutureToday”hasa goalofnolessthan$500million.Yourcontributionswillexpand theuniversity’sgrowinginfluenceinnationalpolicystudy.They willhelpattractleadingresearchprofessorsandsustainthe state’stopstudents.Thegenerosityofnewbenefactorsand long-standingonesalsowillstrengthenRutgers’ongoing commitmenttocommunityservice,particularlyinCamden, Newark,andNewBrunswick.

HEATINGUP Sparkedbyleadershipgiftsfromcorporations, foundations,andindividualsacrossthecountry,TheRutgers Campaignistwo-thirdsofthewaytoits$500milliongoal.

Thesegiftsincludea$28.5millionportfolioofpatents, licenses,andequipmentfromHoneywellInternational,Inc., whichisthelargestgiftintheuniversity’s235-yearhistory; nearly$7millioninscholarshipaidfromaRutgers–Douglass couple;anda$600,000commitmentfromtheCarnegie CorporationofNewYorktofundastudyofuniversal preschooleducation.

Thethreegifts,plushundredsofothersgeneratedbythe campaign,makeapositiveimpactontheuniversity’smission ofeducation,research,publicservice,andeconomicdevelopment.The$28.5milliongiftfromHoneywellInternational toRutgers’SchoolofEngineeringtouchesseveralareas importanttothecampaign.

Studentsupport—anotherimportantgoalofTheRutgers Campaign—willbeadvancedthroughacademicandathletic scholarshipsfundedthroughtrustsandbequeststotaling almost$7millionfromthelateMargaretB.SahloffBeldon, DC’32,andherfirsthusband,WillardH.Sahloff,RC’30. TheSahloffscreatedfootballscholarshipsinthe1950sand addedbasketballscholarshipsinthe1960s;Mrs.BeldonestablishedathleticscholarshipsforDouglassCollegestudentsin the1990s.Theirestategiftsnowsubstantiallyaddtothose scholarshipsandcreatenewacademicscholarships university-wide.

Rutgers’researchandpublicserviceeffortswillbeenhanced byagrantfromtheCarnegieCorporationofNewYorktofund astudyontheadministration,financing,andpotentialimpact ofuniversalpreschooleducation.“Keydecisionswillbemade overthenextfiveyearsthatwillshapethedesignofearly educationandchildcarefordecadesanddeterminetheextent towhichsuchprogramsfulfilltheirpromise,”saysDr.W.Steven Barnett,directoroftheCenterforEarlyEducationResearchand aprofessorattheGraduateSchoolofEducation.

“ThankstotheCarnegieCorporation,wewillbeconductingresearchoverthenextthreeyearstoinformthosedecisions andprovidethenationwithanewvisionofhigh-qualityearly childhoodeducationandcarethatintegratespubliceducation, HeadStart,andtheprivatesector,”declaresBarnett.

HEALTHYCOMMITMENT AccordingtotheU.S.secretary ofhealthandhumanservices,thenationfacesashortageof halfamillionnursesby2020.“That’sjustnotacceptable,” saysTommyG.Thompson.“Thenursingshortageinour countryisincreasing,anditplacesoursystemofmedical careatrisk.”

NewJerseyfacesthesameproblem,withsome14,000 nursingpositionsexpectedtobeunfilledby2006.Dr.Hurdis Griffith,deanoftheRutgersCollegeofNursing,callsthesituationcriticalandisdeterminedthatthecollegebepartof thesolution.PlansincludeanewfacilityinNewBrunswickto attractagreaternumberofbaccalaureatestudentsintothe nursingprofession.

Theplanstookamajorstepforwardthisyearwhenthe RobertWoodJohnsonFoundation,thenation’slargest philanthropydevotedtohealthandhealthcare,pledged morethan$2milliontothenewbuilding.Theproposed 13,000-square-footbuildingwouldservethecampus’s 200undergraduatenursingstudentsinoneup-to-date facilityandallowroomforgrowth.

Thebuildingprojectmarksthelatestmajorcommitmentto theuniversitybytheRobertWoodJohnsonFoundationin recentyears.ThefoundationmadepossibletheestablishmentoftheRutgersCenterforStateHealthPolicywithan

$11million,five-yeargrant.Thecenterinforms,supports, andstimulatessoundandcreativehealthpolicyinNewJersey andaroundthenation.Initsfirsttwoyearsofoperation, thecenterhasconductedmorethanadozenstudiesin collaborationwithstateagenciesandcommunityhealth organizations,reportsDr.JoelCantor,director.

TheRobertWoodJohnsonFoundationalsoawardeda $753,000five-yeargrantthathelpedcreatetheFamilySupport CenterattheLEAPAcademyinCamden,a750-studentcharter school.“Thefoundation’sinvestmenthasmadeitpossiblefor ustotransformthelivesofmanyfamilieswhowouldnot otherwisehaveanopportunitytoimprovetheirqualityoflife,” saysDr.GloriaBonilla-Santiago,professorofurbanstudiesat Rutgers–CamdenandfounderoftheRutgers/LEAPInitiative.

THERUTGERSUNIVERSITYMEDALFOR PHILANTHROPICEXCELLENCE

honorsextraordinarydonors.Itisatangiblesymboloftheprofound gratitudetheuniversityfeelstowardthem.During the2000–2001academicyear,themedalwasawarded tofourgenerouscouples,includingDr.NortonT.and NancyRuyleDodge,whowerefeaturedprominently inlastyear’sAnnualReport.

ROBERTANDHARRIETTDRUSKIN liketosee results— andtheresultsoftheirgenerousgifttoRutgers arealreadyvisible.ThecreationoftheDruskinScholarships, whichareawardsof$5,000each,ishelpingthirteenbright butfinanciallyneedystudentsinthe2001–2002academic year,andwilleventuallybenefittwentystudents eachyear.

“Wewelcomedtheideaofhelpingstudents whoneededthemoneytogetthroughschool. Thiskindoffinancialsupportcanmakeadifference,”saysMr.Druskin,RC’69.Hespeaks fromexperience.Asanundergraduateat RutgersCollege,Bobsupplementedhisstate scholarshipbycleaningswimmingpools, trundlingfilmcans,andworkinginametal pressfactory.Graduationwashisfirststep towardahighlysuccessfulcareeronWall Street,whereheisnowchiefoperationsand technologyofficerforCitigroup,Inc.

Motivationisanimportanttraittothe Druskins.Scholarshiprecipientsmustmaintaina 3.5orbettergradepointaverageatRutgers,but neednothavebeentophighschoolachievers. “Ithinksometimeswhenitdoesn’tcomethateasy andyouhavetowork,youendupdoingbetterin lifebecauseyou’veacquiredtheworkethic,” HarriettDruskinexplains.

TheDruskinshavemetsomeoftheeightstudents whoreceivedgrantslastyear.“Itwasverypositive,”Bob says.“They’renicekids,andthescholarshipsaredoing whatweintended."

TheDruskins’children,BenE.Druskin,RC’90,and MelissaDruskinTravers,DC’96,“arereallypleasedthatwe givethescholarships,”theirfatherobserves.Mrs.Druskin adds,“ThediversebackgroundsofMelissa’sandBen’sfellow studentsenabledourchildrentolearnasmuchoutofclass asin.”

Thedonorsmodestlysaytheywere“stunned”toreceive theRutgersUniversityMedalforPhilanthropicExcellence. SaysRutgersPresidentFrancisL.Lawrence:“TheDruskins havegivenmuch,notonlywithgenerosity,butwiththoughtfulnessandheart.”

PAULS.MONROE wasbotha Rutgersengineeringstudentandentrepreneurinthelate1930s.Heearneda profitof$2,000injusttwoweeksthrough thesaleofdrawinginstrumentstonight schoolstudents.“Thatwentalongway inDepressiondays,”hereflectstoday.

Althoughhisparentswerecollegegraduates,Paulsays, “Therewasn’tmuchtalkabouteducationathomebecause therewasn’tmoneytoevengetthere.”Butwithscholarship help,PauldidgettoRutgers.

Inhighschool,Paulhaddiscoveredthatengineeringwas hisdestiny.Themotorinhisdad’scarsounded“terrible,”so hepromptlytoreitdownandrebuiltit.Thiswasaformulafor successPaulwastorepeatthroughouthislife:servingasthe consummatefixerandbuilder.

Fromthoseleandaystotoday,manyprojectshave blossomedunderhisguidance.Mr.Monroe,Eng’40,was projectmanageroftheplantinOakRidge,Tennessee,where materialforthefirstatombombwasmanufactured.Hewent ontoserveforthirtyyearsasvicepresidentoftheScientific DesignCompany(latertheHalconInternationalCompany), withconstructionsitesworldwide.

Paulandhiswife,MaryW.,gavetheSchoolofEngineering morethanamilliondollarslastyeartobeusedforresearch andteachinginthegrowingfieldofproductdesign,manufacturing,andpackagingengineering,whichhasaveryhigh demandforgraduates.MarydiedinMay2001afteralong illnessbutnotbeforereceiving,alongwithPaul,theRutgers UniversityMedalforPhilanthropicExcellence.Thiswasa warmacknowledgmentoftheMonroes’beneficenceand strongcommitmenttoRutgers.

JOHNANDELEANORKUSER lovetoplanttrees.Theirgenerosityhas guaranteedthatotherswill,too.

RecentlyretiredfromCookCollege, wherehetaughtforestryfortwodecades, Dr.Kuserhasmadetreeshislife’swork. WhetherstrollingaroundcampusorthroughalargewoodlandheownsnearPennington,ProfessorKuser,GSNB’76, readsatreeasothersreadabook.Heknowsaspecies’ potentialandproblems.Hedivineseachtree’sparticular historyfromthescarsonitslimbs.Eleanorshareshis enthusiasm.Shehasbeenanactivegardenerand environmentalist.

Theirpassionledtothecreationofatrustfundthatwill eventuallyendowachairinurbanforestryatCookCollege. ItisasubstantialinvestmentinNewJersey’sfutureenvironmentandeconomy.Addingupsalesoftreesandequipment,salariesfortreeplantingandmaintenance,increased propertyvalues,andotherexpenditures,urbanforestry adds$2billionannuallytothestateeconomy,Dr.Kuser notes.Treescanincreasepropertyvaluesby6percentand cutfuelcostsbyprovidingshadeandblockingwind.Atthe sametime,hesays,theymakeourairhealthiertobreathe.

Rutgersisanationalleaderinurbanforestry.TheJohn andEleanorKuserChairinUrbanForestryfirmlyplants thatleadershipsoitwillgrowinfuturegenerations. CommentingontheRutgersMedalsforPhilanthropic Excellencethathepresentedtothecouple,President Lawrencedeclares:“JohnandEleanorhavevery generouslydemonstratedtheirdevotiontothepeople ofNewJersey,thestudentsofRutgers,andthe environmentweallshare.”

Legendaryadvertising geniusJayChiathasblazedtrailsforhisindustryandfor minoritieswithinit.DuringhisrecentinductionintoRutgers’ HallofDistinguishedAlumni,Mr.Chiat’ssurprisepledgeof $1millioninminorityscholarshipshadthetypicalflairthatwon himandtheChiat/DayAdvertisingAgency,whichhefounded in1968,numerousawards.Heiscreatingthefuturetodayfor thetwentyundergraduatesayear,primarilyAfrican-AmericanandLatinostudents,whomhisscholarshipswillassist.

“Educationisthekeytosuccess,”saysthe1953graduateoftheSchoolofEducation.“Rutgersalwayshasexemplified tomeaverylargecommitmenttominoritystudents.Thisgiftwillallowtheuniversitytoincreasethatcommitment.Ithelpspeople whowouldnothaveaccesstohighereducationtoearnacollegedegreeandimprovethecommunity.”

Chiat’svisionaryapproacheshavemarkedhisdistinguishedcareeratChiat/Dayandmorerecentlyat ScreamingMedia,theInternetcontentdistributor. “IguessIdon’thavethesameresistancetochange mostpeoplehave,”hesays.TheEnergizerBunny campaignisjustoneexampleofhiscreativity. Afuturisticthinkerandaninnovatorthroughouthis career,hehasadvocatedideasovertechnique, addedresearch-basedaccountplanning,andutilized satellitesandinteractivevideo.

Equallyadeptasapioneerinrecruitingglobal talentandopeningtheadvertisingfieldtominorities,Chiatcreatedandcontributedgenerouslytoan agencyinternshipprograminSouthernCalifornia, wherehewasbased.Withintwoyears,seventy-nine internscompletedtraining,andthirteenhadfull-time jobs.“Isawthatmorehelpwasneededinbringing minoritiesintothefield,”hesays.“Advertisingis multicultural,asittriestoaddressabroadmass audience.Therefore,youmusthavepeoplewithin thebusinesswhounderstandthesemanyinterests. It’stherightthingtodo.”

CHIPPINGAWAY Onecanhardlyimaginecomputers gettinganymoresophisticatedthantheminusculehand-held devicesandslenderlaptopstowhichwehavebecomeaccustomed.Butwiththehelpofgenerousgiftsfromthreemajor computercompanies,futureRutgersgraduateslikelywillbe partofthenextwaveofinnovatorstocomeupwith“the nextbigthing”incomputertechnology.

Twoofthegiftswillbenefitdirectlybothundergraduate andgraduatestudentsintheDepartmentofElectricaland ComputerEngineering.ThesoftwaregiftfromCadence DesignSystemsofSanJose,California,isworthanestimated $3.9million,whilethesoftwarefromSynopsysofMountain

View,California,isworth$1.2million.AccordingtoProfessor MichaelBushnell,graduatedirectorofelectricalandcomputer engineering,thetwosetsofsoftwareareusedincomputer designandcomplementeachother.“BothCadenceand Synopsyshaverevolutionizedhardwaredesignandsignificantly broughtdownthecostofpersonalcomputers,”Dr.Bushnell says.“Thenextstageinhardwaredesignwillbetogetlarge systemsononechip.Thesegiftshelpusinthatdirection.”

Dr.Bushnellpointsoutthatcomputercompaniesareeager tohirecomputerengineeringgraduateswhoknowhowtouse boththeCadenceandSynopsyssoftware.“Thesegiftsalso willmakeourstudentsfarmoremarketableaftergraduation,” henotes.

Thethirdgift,fromAT&T,transferredtotalownershipofa patentandsoftwareworthanestimated$2.8milliontoRutgers. ComputerScienceAssociateProfessorHaymHirshsaysthat theinnovativesoftware,combiningideasfromthefieldsof databasesandinformationretrieval,wasdevelopedbyDr. WilliamW.Cohen,GSNB’88,’90,whilehewasemployed atAT&T.HeisnowaresearchscientistatWhizBang!Labs inPittsburgh.

“Byowningthepatent,Rutgerscanmakethissoftware availablefreetothescholarlycommunity,”Hirshsays.The softwarehasbeeninuseatmorethan400institutionsworldwide,includingprominentusebyRutgerscomputerscience students,“makingRutgersanaturalrecipientofthedonation,” hesays.Theuniversityhopestoeventuallylicenseittoindustry andreapaneconomicbenefitfromownershipofthepatent.
