Figure/Ground Figure–ground organization is a type of perceptual grouping which is a vital necessity for recognizing objects through vision. In Gestalt psychology it is known as identifying a figure from the background.

4

Similarity Things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, or value will be seen as belonging together in the viewer’s mind.

8

Proximity Objects or shapes that are close to one another appear to form groups - Even if the shapes, sizes, and objects are radically different, they will appear as a group if they are close together.

12

Closure We have a natural tendency to close gaps and complete an unfinished form. The satisfaction of a pattern encoded, as it were, into the brain.

16

Continuance learners tend to continue shapes beyond their ending points, thus the edge of one shape will continue into the space and meet up with other shapes or the edge of the picture plane.

20

Translation The process of moving figure from one place to another in a linear, equal, point-to-point correspondance.

23

Rotation The symmetrical operation of rotating a figure around an axis or center.

27

Reflection The rotating of a figure out of the plane by exactly 180 째

31

Glide/Reflection An isometric symmetry operation that rotates the figure out of the plane 180 째 and glides or slips the figure into a new position.

36

Dilation Where a figure grows or shrinks but keeps the same overall shape.

39

Symmetric balance The near or exact matching of left and right sides of a composition.

44

Asymmetric balance Balance achieved in a composition when neither side reflects or mirrors the other. Not symmetrical.

48

Ambiguous balance Lack of, or unclear, relationships between the compositional elements relative to a central axis.

52

Nuetral balance A standard definition of static equilibrium.-
