Marie Michielssen
Marie Michielssen has been designing for Serax for more than 25 years. She has created countless objects inspired by and intended for everyday life. Her design vernacular is a combination of opposites – ratio and intuition, male and female, graphic and organic, which effortlessly form an eclectic whole. Her work is both functional and aesthetic thanks to her artisanal approach and choice of soulful materials.
Her predilection for paper inspired Marie to experiment with the somewhat forgotten material paper mâché. It was the start of the Earth collection, a series of objects that lie somewhere between a sculpture and a functional object, Marie’s international breakthrough in the design industry.
“Over the years I have been striving for more authenticity in my work. I am letting go of excess ballast and trust my feelings, experience and yes, wisdom to create objects that are more meaningful. As I get older, I find it more and more important that my designs can stand the test of time and last for generations.”
JEANNE & JULIETTE — FURNITURE
For Jeanne & Juliette Marie drew inspiration from her own family life: the dynamics of children leaving the nest and coming home over the weekend and holidays with friends, spouses, children of their own... With this in mind, she designed a table and seating collection around the archetypical simple long table and sturdy bench, as a modular concept for all phases in the family cycle.
Besides two rectangular tables - a long and a short version - Marie also designed a semi-circular table. It can be used as a console against the wall, but it also transforms a rectangular table into an oval table in a snap. The pont d’amour, a handy connecting piece, makes it possible to create a generous table that can be extended as desired.
Going hand in hand with the aesthetics of Jeanne, the constructivist Juliette stool and benches consists of three elements in solid oak. The seats and stools fit perfectly with the Jeanne table, turning the combination into an interesting game of graphic lines. But they can also be used as a side table or night table.
VIRGINIA & PAULETTE - FURNITURE
In addition to Marie’s love for architecture and art, she also draws inspiration from nature. However, a design can also arise from a need. For example, a few years ago she was looking for a nice, round dining table for her home. Because she didn’t find the right one, she designed a table in her own signature style: sculptural, with perfect proportions, but in a warm, natural material oak. Marie’s first dining table - Virginia - was born.
The Paulette dining chair is finished with the same eye for detail and is a perfect match for the Virginia table by Marie Michielssen. For Paulette, Marie started from an elliptical seat, which gives the chair its very own expression. The backrest follows the curvature of the ellipse and allows for multiple seating positions, from standard upright at the table to a more sideways, relaxed pose, with one arm loosely supported on the armrest. The chair is made of ash wood and available in a warm ocher tone, deep green, ebony black or ivory, colours inspired by nature.
VALERIE & JAMES - FURNITURE
For her iconic Valerie lounge chair, Marie started from an elliptical base to which she added two rectangular surfaces, a seat and back at a perfect angle that makes it possible to sit comfortably. She chose lacquered steel for the outdoor version and oak, in a warm ebony stain, for indoors. The James series was conceived with small spaces in mind.
The Big James shelving unit and the Little James trolley, both a combination of steel and wood, can be easily moved thanks to the wheels. James is the perfect companion, to whom you can entrust your belongings, including small items such as your keys, your change and anything else you find when emptying your pockets or purse. Placed in the kitchen space, Big James is perfect to display your beautiful homeware, towels and condiments.
The Smart James wall unit gives people the flexibility to use it any way they want: as a small work desk or a shelf to display favourite objects. As for the James stools, they go everywhere where they are needed as an extra seat or side table.
PAWN, MARIETTE, TERRAZZO - FURNITURE
The Pawn collection has evolved over the years into a series of objects in various materials, colours and shapes. From organic to purely geometric shapes in metal, concrete, glazed terracotta and even fiberglass. They lend themselves to seating or side tables and when not in use, the Pawns are still very decorative.
Marie also designed two concrete stools, named Mariette, after her grandmother, which are placed together as puzzle pieces to create more shapes. The semi-circular stool repeats the shape of the semi-circle of the Jeanne table. The rounded shapes have something feminine about them, contrasting nicely with the hard, masculine concrete.
In all its simplicity, the Terrazzo cube remains a strong design that has been part of the permanent collection for years. The frivolous material attracts attention but does not get boring thanks to the timeless shape.

EARTH - OBJECTS
It’s noticeable in her many collections for Serax that Marie likes to take the ideas in her head and turn them into objects that she shapes by hand. Her Earth pots, vases and bowls in natural colours, made of the traditional material paper mâché, are a worldwide success. Following this range, she ventured into similar shapes, but this time executed in glass and ceramics.
WIND & FIRE - OBJECTS
The Wind & Fire collection comprises glass interpretations of Marie’s organic paper mâché Earth vases, extended with a series of completely different shapes: vases that are reminiscent of old pharmacy pots. The organic versions come in shades of brown, green and dark blue, while the sleeker designs were executed in celestial blue and cognac. The use of those two colours was inspired by the transition between sea and sand on the shore.
ALABASTER - OBJECTS
The manliness of the geometric shape and the robust dimensions are balanced by the alabaster material. This soft, chalky stone is translucent and shapes these tea light holders.
HELENA, BILLY, MOLLY - OBJECTS
In 2022, Marie took her first venture into ceramics. First she created the Héléna vase in black and white, which deliberately shows the irregular shape of hand modelling.
Followed by Billy, a playful name that matches the playful, cheerful vases. The unique forms had been in Marie’s head for a long time, but she waited for the right moment, or rather, the right material. She started with the small ones in stoneware, and then she ventured towards the larger versions. Modelled by hand, following her gut feeling, yet always with an underlying mathematical logic.
While the Billy vases are perfect for just a single flower or a small flower arrangement, Molly can both serve for a bouquet and a plant. The Molly collection is a harmonious yet playful range of vases/pots based on three different models in different sizes, including a set of mini-Molly vases. They can be “mixed and matched” to your heart’s content. Executed in offwhite stoneware, matte on the outside, and glazed on the inside, the Molly vases and pots make a beautiful eye-catcher for every interior.
MARIE-ANN - OBJECTS
Marie-Ann is the name of a collection of vases and two candlesticks in red clay with extra chamotte for an authentic, matt texture. The outside remains unglazed, while the inside has been made waterproof with a silicone coating. The consciously archetypal, rather geometric shapes make them versatile and suitable for various interiors.
LES FEMMES - OBJECTS
The Les Femmes collection of vases was inspired by the universal image of a strong woman. An assertive woman, with her hands on her hips and her head raised, with a frank gaze. Designer Marie Michielssen always emphasizes hands and eyes in her designs. Our eyes are the mirror of our soul while hands symbolize softness and caring, as well as creativity. And Marie molded the prototypes of these vases with her own hands. Small, refined details, such as the decorative elements on the clothing and headwear, contrast with the somewhat rougher appearance of the chamotte that Marie added to the clay. The inner surface and base have been finished with a transparent, matte glaze.
CONSTRUCT - OBJECTS
The Construct plant pot collection is all about the right proportions. Marie likes to play with geometrical shapes. For the prototypes she cut up cones and cylinders and reassembled them in unexpected ways, creating new, fascinating shapes that are harmonious nonetheless. The result is a line of pots for plants, in two different colours and three shapes.
MIRRORS - OBJECTS
These mirrors by Marie Michielssen are an original mix of organic shapes and different sizes. Their black rim contrasts nicely with the straight lines of other items in the room, adding a surprising visual accent to any wall. The mirrors come in different shapes. In contrast to the intuitive, rather feminine shapes, she now adds a rectangular shape, in two sizes.

EARTH, BILLY, CATHERINE AND PALOMA - LIGHTING
The first lighting fixtures Marie designed were made of paper mâché. This unusual choice of material resulted in the unique Earth lamps. With paper mâché, layer after layer is given shape to the foot and shade, almost like a sculpture. More recently, Marie discovered her love for ceramics. This material can also be kneaded until the desired shape is achieved.
The lamp bases of Cathérine, Paloma and Billy are both modelled by hand and combined with a minimal, fabric lampshade.
