The Joys and Challenges of Being a Family Child Care Provider
By Barbara Fuller, 96 FSS
On March 25, 2023, the Eglin AFB Family Child Care (FCC) program held a Provider Appreciation Day and bestowed their annual Provider of the Year award upon Mrs. May Davis, who has been an FCCprovider since 2017. The Provider of the Year award was presented to Mrs. Davis by Colonel Tassika Davis, Commander, 96th Mission Support Group, who thanked Mrs. Davis and all providers for their contribution to the Mission and their service to our nation.
“[You’re] caring for the future of our country in your homes,” Colonel Davis said in her address. She also acknowledged the ongoing nationwide childcare availability crisis, stating, “We cannot fix the problem without FCCproviders.”
Mr. Mark Wilke, Deputy Director, 96th Force Support Squadron, also took the opportunity to praise FCCproviders for their hard work and dedication, saying, “Family Child Care is an excellent environment for childcare because it closely mirrors the family setting.”
The Family Child Care programoffers parents an option for individualized care within a more intimate, home-based setting. The programkeeps the children-to-provider ratio at a maximumof 6-to-1, presenting more opportunity for one-on-one relationships. This structure and style of responsive and nurturing care in a family setting has the potential for many positive outcomes for children. [i] For example, mixed age groups can offer younger children “role models” in the presence of older children, helping to naturally encourage growth and independence. The older children, in turn, develop leadership skills and empathy through their connections with the younger.
Evidence indicates that consistent and reliable caregiving supports early neurological development, [ii] and that having the same provider for several years can cultivate a responsive relationship between the infant or toddler and the adult caregiver. [iii] The Family Child Care programensures parents find the best fit for their family, rather than having no choice in caregivers or their environment. This feeling of choice is further bolstered by the flexibility inherent in the

FCCprogram—so much more than traditional daycare centers. FCCproviders are often able to offer extended or non-traditional hours of care, including weekends, overnight, part-time, and even hourly drop-in care. For parents who may work unconventional schedules, this flexibility is a crucial factor in quality of life and peace of mind. For FCCproviders themselves, the rewards of their job can be invaluable! From the laughter of the littlest ones to the pride and joy of watching the older children mature, the intangible benefits of caregiving inspire providers to maintain a safe, nurturing, and educational environment where the children in their charge can develop skills and knowledge that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
Ms. Conchita (20+ years as an FCCprovider) describes a childcare provider as, “someone who has a passion, patience, love, and understanding when caring with someone else’s child/children.” With such dedication, it’s no surprise that FCC providers often form close and meaningful relationships with the families with whom they work. These connections contribute to a stronger sense of community and support, both personal and professional, that is vital and priceless. Additionally, the job model of providers working within their home and setting their own schedule offers a unique and enriching career path — one that couples the freedom to spend time with their own family, with the opportunity of still earning a lucrative income! However, “Do it for the children, not for the money,” is the advice Ms. Sharon (25 years as an FCCProvider) would offer to anyone considering a career in childcare. She adds, “Working with children is the most rewarding job I’ve had but you [must] have a lot of patience and sense of humor.”
Such a mindset is crucial because — as in any childcare position — a Family Child Care provider is going to face their fair share of challenges. The initial process to become a certified FCC provider involves State of Florida licensing and

background checks that can prove very thorough and often take more time than expected. Some rental properties do not allow potential providers to conduct childcare services inside their home. And at the very least, FCCproviders must be skilled in managing finances, marketing their services, and meeting the quality expectations of Air Force standards.
All of this while still maintaining energy and enthusiasm for their work, plus taking care of themselves and their own families, may seem like a Herculean task! But despite the challenges, many FCCproviders find their work to be overly rewarding and fulfilling. The role they play is vital in shaping the lives of young children and supporting the families of their communities. When asked why our current FCCproviders love being a provider, Ms. Sharon shared, “The children! Children are bluntly honest and unintentionally funny.”
Becoming a successful FCCprovider means ensuring your heart is in it, understanding the development of children and committing to the health and safety of those in your care, knowing that you chose this field because you want to make a positive difference in a child’s life, and being able to build positive relationships with the children and their families. “Parents have peace of mind going to work knowing their children are getting the care they need in a small group,” says Ms. May.
If you love caring for children and would consider starting your own business, you may have an essential role to play in the future of Family Child Care! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the child care industry overall has lost 9.7%of its workforce compared to pre-pandemic levels. This equates to over 100,000 employees, and such loss is already being felt through significant impacts on the local level.
