Military Spouse Appreciation Day Friday, May 10
Active Duty Members, don’t forget to thank your spouse. They are the silent heroes that support you each day. Many have had to start their careers over each time you move, make new friends, make your new house a home, and so much more. Show them that you appreciate them and consider giving them something they enjoy, whether it’s candy, wine, time to themselves, or a special date night. You can also show your appreciation by ensuring your family is taken care of! •• Make sure your vRED and SGLI are up to date •• Keep important documents in a safe •• Make sure you both have a Will and a Power of Attorney •• Teach your spouse how to read an LES Check out www.military.com for companies that offer military discounts. Marcile Silvia Key Spouse Program Manager Eglin Airman & Family Readiness Center
“I would love for the community to know that we’re here for them. We have a wonderful staff, we’re all very talented, very educated, and dedicated — very dedicated, to helping everybody. And we’re purple, so we serve all branches. This is your one-stop shop. If you’re not sure who to turn to, just come to us. Because if it’s something we can’t do, we will definitely get you in the right direction.”
Jackie Gonzales Transition Assistance Program Manager Eglin Airman & Family Readiness Center “The best part about my job is working with service members when that light bulb goes off . . . I love watching them learn from each other. Even though we have a full team here that can educate them, it’s really, really neat to see them learn from each other and confide in each other with their similar concerns and experiences, and that’s when I feel like it clicks. When they can get a real life experience of someone else who’s going through the same process, that’s when the message gets driven home.” Photos By Andrea Stachewicz, 96 FSS Marketing

THE EGLIN GOLF COURSE CAN HELP YOU
GET GOLF READY! am a golf beginner. I’d played a few rounds of golf and could swing a club, but I didn’t feel like I had the skills (or confidence!) to play in public. It was time to call in a professional - I was ready to enjoy golfing with my family. My husband and I signed up for the Get Golf Ready Class in March. For just $99, you get five 90 minute group lessons with Eglin’s LPGA Class A Golf Pro, Denise Kafferly. There were 8 of us, ranging from total beginners to more experienced golfers. Each day, we focused on a small part of the game, starting with putts, before we moved to chips and full swings. We learned the fundamentals while Denise made things easy and fun using props, games, and tricks. She also gave us handouts that explained rules and terminology. Throughout each class, Denise took the time to provide personalized tips and feedback. She’d pull us aside and make small adjustments. With each tip or trick, I saw an immediate improvement. It was such a rush, and Denise was just excited about our progress as we were. I can’t say enough about Denise as a teacher she’s passionate, engaging, and SO talented. She makes golf look easy, without showing off. Denise grew up playing golf in her home country, Sweden, where she spent time on the Swedish Tour. She recently received her LGPA Class A certification, which is a huge

accomplishment. Her enthusiasm for golf is contagious and she’s a natural teacher. We spent a few lessons at the driving range and putting greens, before splitting up to play on the course. It was a great way to get familiar with course play in a less intimidating

great shots - ones that keep every golfer coming back for more. I finished the class with a better understanding and appreciation for the game, and I can’t believe how much I improved. Michael Hoglen took the course with me. He sums things up wonderfully.

environment. We ended our final class at the driving range. After a few final tips and tricks, we had time to work on whatever we wanted. It was incredible to see how much everyone improved in just five days. I’m no longer swinging the club as hard as I can, whiffing more often than not. I hit some
“The Force Support Squadron and the Eglin Golf Course have an inexpensive and wonderful golf instruction program. I was a frustrated amateur for years, listening to the advice of golfing buddies, watching videos, and trying various practice techniques. In just five days, Denise identified my weaknesses, showed me proper techniques in ball striking, and made me a more confident golfer. Denise is a proven athlete, very patient, and actually makes golf lessons enjoyable instead of feeling as if it is work. If you want to improve your existing golf game, or are brave enough to start a mentally challenging game, allow Denise to truly kick start your love of the game.”

CLUB FITTING
It’s a new golf season, and it’s time to update our bag. How old are your clubs? Have you ever been fitted? Customize your clubs to your swing and your body, and not all clubs fit every player. If you look around on the golf course, how many different body types do you see? People differ in size, lengths, strengths, and athletic abilities — that’s why we need to choose golf clubs that fit us! Invest in your golf game, and you will get rewarded. You don’t need to spend a fortune — it’s about having the right equipment for you and your golf swing. The best time to get fitted is early in the season because it gives you time to get ready for the summer golf season. Without the right equipment you are not playing up to your full potential and who doesn’t want to play the best golf? With the right equipment, you can minimize your misses. The Eglin Golf Course is fully booked with demo days, so come out to see if we have something that just might fit you and your golf swing!

A RECIPE FROM THE
CARAMEL BUTTER
1 cup all-purpose flour 2 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup water 1/4 tsp salt 2 Tbsp melted butter
Using a blender, mix the crêpes ingredients until the batter is smooth. Refrigerate the batter for at least 20 minutes.
1/2 cup salted butter 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup water 1/16 tsp sea salt
Using a saucepan set over medium-low heat, melt the butter in the heavy cream. Immediately remove the saucepan from the heat and set aside.
Over medium-low heat, coat the bottom of a large skillet with a small amount of butter. Add 3 Tbsp of batter to the pan and swirl until the bottom of the pan is covered with batter. Cook for 1 minute, or until the crêpe is slightly moist on top and golden underneath. Using a spatula, loosen the edges and gently flip upside down into the pan. Cook for 1 minute and transfer the crêpe to a plate.
Place the sugar in a separate saucepan set over medium heat. Sprinkle the water over the sugar and allow it to dissolve over the heat without stirring. As the sugar begins to caramelize, occasionally shake and swirl the pan to evenly distribute the color. When the caramel is a rich golden color, remove pan from the heat. Slowly add the butter and heavy cream mixture to the caramel. Take care during this process as the hot caramel will bubble up the sides of the pan. Return the caramel to the lowest heat setting, whisking constantly for 2 minutes. Remove pan from the heat and stir in the sea salt until completely dissolved.
vanilla chantilly cream sautéed apples
Spoon 2 tsp of the caramel sauce down the center of a warm crêpe and roll into a cylinder, or spoon 2 tsp of the caramel sauce onto the center of a warm crêpe and fold into quarters. Garnish with vanilla chantilly cream and/or sautéed apples.

EGLIN A&FRC RELAUNCHES
WORKSHOPS reat news for local military spouses - the Eglin Airman & Family Readiness Center is relaunching Spouse Employment Workshops. I attended the first workshop to get a sneak peek of what spouses can expect. It’s a hot issue; according to the 2018 Blue Star Families Annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey, 45% of Military Spouses identified spouse employment as a top concern. Diana Davis, Community Readiness Specialist at the A&FRC, is excited to restart the program.
We want our military spouses to learn how to utilize the various application processes and special assistance programs specifically designed to assist them in seeking employment. - Diana Davis, Community Readiness Specialist, Airman & Family Readiness Center
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS: Thursday, May 16 | 9:30-11:30am Thursday, June 20 | 9:30-11:30am

By Rachel LaBud, 96 FSS Marketing
The workshop featured representatives from Civilian Personnel, NAF, Career Source Okaloosa, and the Goodwill Career Campus. Representatives discussed their programs and resources, and how they can specifically help spouses throughout the job hunting process. As a Military Spouse, it was great to learn more about the different resources and local organizations available. (There were several I had never heard of!) We were encouraged to ask questions, and each of the representatives was incredibly knowledgable and personable, and their commitment to helping spouses was clear. There are plans to feature more agencies in the future, including the Eglin Library, AAFES, and Family Child Care Offices. Spouse input will also help with program development. The job hunt can feel overwhelming, but the A&FRC can assist wherever you are in the process. “Many of our military spouses are unaware of the support they qualify for, and we want to ensure they have a full understanding of every employment resource available to them,” Davis says. “By having various agencies briefing their provisional services, spouses can get clarity and personal contact in their path to achieving gainful employment.”

Switching schools can be challenging, but Eglin’s School Liason Officer, Elaine LaJeunesse says the key is to get organized before moving. She’s put together a checklist for parents to help make the transition as seamless as possible. Parents should also research the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3). The MIC3 was created to support successful education transitions for mobile military students. All fifty states, including the District of Columbia, are members of the Compact, which applies to public schools and DoDEA schools kindergarten through 12th grade. MIC3 covers children of Active Duty members, including the National Guard and Reserves under Active Duty Title 10 orders. “PCSing can be stressful for families, but you are not alone when it comes to getting your children settled into a new school,” LaJeunesse says. “A solid plan will help you chart your way to success, and utilizing the MIC3 will empower you with the knowledge you need in making informed decisions.”
Elaine LaJeunesse, School Liaison Officer By Rachel LaBud, 96 FSS Marketing
Here’s what the MIC3 covers: Enrollment • Educational records, immunizations, Kindergarten and First Grade entrance age. Placement & Attendance • Course and educational program placement, special education services, placement flexibility, and absence related to deployment activities. Eligibility • Eligibility for student enrollment and extracurricular participation.
