God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. - John 4:24

EDITORIAL Friends, What does worshipping God mean to you? Is worshipping God confined to a few hours on Sunday morning (or evening for some of you)? What does worshipping God cost you? How do you worship God? Is that limited to singing a few songs? The theme for this edition (by now, you might have already got it – Worship) stems from the exploration to answer some of these questions. What is worship? What does it mean to me? What does it mean to God? In this edition, four writers from three countries share their thoughts on worship. This edition does not promise answers to all the above questions. But I hope it will challenge some of your beliefs on worship. For the past couple of decades, worship has been confined to two things – music and songs. But if we look at the Bible, music and songs are only a part of worship. Worship is more than that. For Abel, worship cost his life. For David, worship means giving up his esteem as a king. For many of the members of the first-century church, worshipping Jesus meant laying down their lives. Let’s try to understand the true meaning of worship. Let our worship be pleasant unto God. I am also excited to introduce a new piece from this edition onwards. Named “Memory Lane,” one page of the magazine will be dedicated to memories from the past years of EGM and the people involved in it. We believe these memories will inspire you to see God’s faithfulness in our lives in the past years. Happy reading. God bless you. George Vilgi Oommen Chief Editor

WORSHIP - An Act of

Obedience – Leslie Moore

“HOW COULD A FATHER RISE EARLY TO SACRIFICE HIS SON? ABRAHAM AND SARAH HAD WAITED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS FOR THIS PROMISED SON THAT GOD WOULD MAKE INTO A GREAT NATION.”

08

Worship has many faces. Scripture shows us that worship can be expressed through songs, acts of service or giving, or through words such as prayer. Today, we tend to limit worship to the act of singing. If we are very blessed, we have the privilege to gather with others weekly in a building, often called a house of worship, and sing praises to God. Psalms 68:4 says, “Sing to God, sing praises to His name.” But what about on Monday when our to-do list takes priority? Or when Wednesday rolls around and the week’s demand have us feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or fearful? What does worship look like in these moments? Romans 12:1 says, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” True and proper worship offers our bodies—our time, God-given abilities, hearts, and everything to the Lord. It is a surrender. Because we are living sacrifices, we tend to crawl off to the altar. Our hearts are idol-making factories, and if we aren’t diligent in our pursuit of Christ, we will find ourselves worshiping something other than the Lord. As Isaiah 29:13 says, “And so the Lord says, ‘These people say they are mine. They honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. And their worship of Me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.” The words we sing can declare all the right sentiments, but if our hearts are not in a posture of worship, God is not honored in it.

God called Abraham to offer a sacrifice to him. It was not just any sacrifice; he was asked to offer the son of promise, Isaac. An often overlooked posture of worship is obedience. As 1 Samuel 15:22 says, “And Samuel said, ‘Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.’” In the account of Abraham and Isaac found in Genesis 22, we read as a heart-clenching tragedy appears to unfold. God calls Abraham in verse 2 to take his one and only son, Isaac, whom he loves, and offer him there as a burnt offering. In the following verse, Abraham rose early in the morning. I have heard it said that delayed obedience is disobedience, and Abraham did not delay.

“MAY YOUR HEART BE IN COMPLETE SURRENDER TO YOUR SAVIOR, JESUS.”

How could a father rise early to sacrifice his son? Abraham and Sarah had waited twenty-five years for this promised son that God would make into a great nation. And now God wants him to sacrifice the child? How could Abraham follow through with this command? Because he had faith. He witnessed the nature and character of God, and he trusted that God is who He says He is and that He always keeps His promises. Abraham was confident, not that God would spare Isaac, but that God would still provide. Hebrews 11:17-19 tells us that Abraham believed that even if he did sacrifice his one and only son, God would still be faithful and raise his son from the dead. Abraham was so confident in God that he believed even death could not keep him from fulfilling his promise. Notice what Abraham says in Genesis 22:5, “Abraham said to the young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.’” See that Abraham intended to go and worship. By faith, Abraham trusted that he and Isaac would return. God would provide. And God did it. He provided a miracle in verse 13, a ram in the thicket - a substitute. God speaks to Abraham in Genesis 22:18, “…in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.’” God reaffirms His covenant here with Abraham. Abraham obeyed the voice of the Lord, and not by lips only, but with his heart as an act of worship. We cannot study this account in Genesis without looking to the cross and our perfect substitute. It echoes John 3:16 when Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus was God’s only Son, whom He loved, and yet He did not spare Him but gave Him up for us. Obedience matters. Jesus is whom we look to when modeling our obedience. In Matthew 26:39, Jesus is praying, “‘My Father if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.’” Jesus was always obedient. Jesus is our ram in the thicket, crowned in thorns, and crucified as a perfect sacrifice. When we are obedient, we follow Christ’s model, and we speak God’s love language. As Jesus says in John 14:15, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” May your heart be in complete surrender to your Savior, Jesus. May your hands be open in prayer as the Lord calls you to His work, and may obedience be a daily act of worship.

Did You Know? The first act of worship by a human being in the Bible is recorded in Genesis 4:4. Abel offered some of his flocks to God as a sacrifice. “And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering.” (NIV)

WORSHIP IN

SPIRIT AND TRUTH – Jessica Smith

According to Jews and the Samaritans, the Samaritan woman recorded in John 4:7-42 is nothing but a waste of space. She is a sinner and an outcast, coming to draw water from a well in isolation during the hottest part of the day. So, it’s no surprise that Jesus comes to meet her at the well and asks her for a drink of water. It’s no surprise that He, a Jew, is unashamed to talk to her, a Samaritan. And it’s no surprise that because of His mercies never ceasing. He reveals Himself to her as Living Water. EGM TIMES | ELOHIMGOSPELMINISTRIES.COM

13

In Jesus’ conversation with this broken woman, He tells her the true meaning of worship. He says, “…a time is coming, and even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers” (Jn. 4:23). Okay…So what does that mean exactly? How do you and I worship “in spirit and truth”?

Worship becomes a lifestyle once you trust in Christ alone and receive His mercies upon mercies and grace upon grace. Worship results from God’s saving power in your life, resulting from the Holy Spirit at work within you. Ah, there’s that word: Spirit. One of the ways you and I worship God is in spirit. In John 4:24, Jesus says, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” The Holy Spirit is our Helper. It boils down to understanding the Therefore, we cannot truly worship result of salvation, which was only God without His help. made possible through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and resurrection from the grave. It’s the understanding that just as Christ showed mercy and forgiveness to this Samaritan sinner, He offers mercy and forgiveness to you, with only one request: Belief in Him with your whole self.

John 15:4 says, “Remain in Me, and I in you.” Your relationship with the Lord after you have consecrated your life to Him is so close, so precious, that it’s as though Christ’s blood runs through your veins. You have an unbreakable bond, which nothing and no one can sever. And because of His unfailing love, because the Holy Spirit lives within you as your Helper, your life will undoubtedly be changed by His Truth. Later in John 15, Jesus tells His disciples, “If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full” (verses 10-11).

Because you see, it is through that emptying of yourself that you are filled with God’s peace. Through the endurance of hardships and trials, as you keep your eyes fixed upon Jesus, your faith grows strong. It is through the selflessness of putting God and others before yourself that joy is made full. It is through dying to your sinful desires as you cling to His Word that you experience life in abundance. It is through becoming God’s servant of Truth that freedom is found. My favorite hymn is “The Old Rugged Cross.” The chorus swells, “So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, and exchange it someday for a crown.” That’s worship. Loving the One who laid down His life for you enough to pick up your own cross to follow Him (Matthew 16:24), through every storm, up every mountain, inside every valley.

God’s truth, found in His Word alone, is to be kept. Therefore, true worship cannot happen without obedience to God’s Word. We must study His Word. Treasure it. Be trained up by it. My prayer for you, is that every day, because of His grace, you’ll fall more in love with your Savior. And Worship is indeed a lifestyle. Just as you train that your love for Him will lead you to unashamedly your body through exercise, you train your obey Him and seek Him, so that one day, when you faith through God’s Word. During exercise, you enter heaven’s gates and see your Savior face to face, tear your body down to build muscle. You go and He tells you, “Well done, my faithful servant,” through sweat and muscle soreness and endur- and hands you that crown of glory. ance, even on the days you don’t want to, in order to get stronger. Worshiping God in spirit You’ll lay it at His feet… and truth is the same. You empty yourself of Because He is enough… you, placing God first. You obey His commands, Because He is worthy… which often means dying to your sinful desires. Because He is King! You choose to become God’s servant. All aspects of your life—your job, relationships, desires, hobbies—Every part of you is given to the Lord with open hands because He is the author of your story, and oh, what a beautiful story it is!

“In the course of Jesus’ conversation with this broken woman, He tells her the true meaning of worship.”

LIVING IN A WORLD OF ALGORITHMS – George Vilgi Oommen

In the last edition, I wrote about algorithms and how we live in a world controlled by algorithms. Before we continue the discussion, I want to provide a definition of an algorithm to some of you who may not be familiar with it. Algorithm [al.go.rithm] Noun [1]A process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer. We ended the last edition’s conversation with the question of why we are discussing software algorithms in a Christian magazine. Let’s discuss three spiritual implications of living in a world of algorithms trying to constantly consume our life – Rest, Time and Thoughts. The human body is designed to rest every day. God created human beings with the design to sleep (rest) every day. Excessive screen time can lead to sleep disorders and deterioration of health. In fact, God commanded one day of the week to take rest – Sabbath. It’s fascinating that God placed Sabbath in the ten commandments (I think it’s safe to assume that God gives priority to your rest as much as you do not commit murder!). Statistics show that the average time spent on a smartphone in the USA is around 3 hours. That is more than ten percent of the time in a day. As children of God, we are expected to use our time wisely. Ephesians 5:15,16 (ESV) says, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” One of the reasons of the successful ministry of Jesus is His time management (think of all the things he did in just 3.5 years of public ministry!) Algorithms on our smart devices are designed to influence our thoughts and change our behavior. By constantly monitoring our activities, algorithms are learning about us constantly. As children of God, we are called to have our thoughts controlled by the word of God. Joshua 1:8 (NIV) says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” What can we do to deal with the algorithms? We will discuss it in the next edition. PS – While preparing this column, I came across the article titled [2]“Spiritual Lessons from My Dumb Phone” in Christianity Today magazine. I encourage you to read it (link given in the footnote below). [1] – Oxford Languages [2] - https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2022/march-web-only/spiritual-lessons-from-my-dumb-phone.html

Cast Your Anxiety What‛s on your mind? What has been weighing you down lately? The only way to get past worries and anxiety is to give it to God. The Lord has His hands out and is waiting but you must be willing to let go and give it to Him. This can be done by simply praying and talking to Him about everything and then fully trusting that He will care for you exactly as the following verse states. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:7 18 EGM TIMES | ELOHIMGOSPELMINISTRIES.COM

John 4:24 (NKJV) says, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” The meaning of worship is to bow down to God or surrender yourself completely into His presence. As the Bible says, God is spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth. Worship is not limited to going to church, singing and dancing. Every day of our life must be dedicated to worshipping God in spirit and truth. A life full of worship connects us to God.

WORSHIP

LIFE OF

– Sumbal Nadeem

Revelation 7:11 (NKJV) says, “And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God.” Angels are always singing in the Presence of God. Our value is more than angels. When angels are worshiping God all the time, God expects more from us. I got some content from the burning heart’s seminary to make it clearer. There is a word called zimrat. An amazing Hebrew word "zimrat." It is usually recognized as "song." We lift our "zimrat" to the Lord. But like many Hebrew words, it has a dual meaning, known as a homonym. It is also the word for "strength" and "protection." "Yahweh, you are my true strength and my glory-song!" Ps. 118:14 Our strength and might as a follower of Jesus is our song. To sing to the Lord from the heart builds a wall of protection and favor over you that causes you to excel, rise in the midst of pain and difficulty, and overcome your limitations. God loves when His people worship. What can worship do in our lives? Let’s check in the book of Acts : Acts 16:25-26, “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once, all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.” We see Paul and Silas were in prison. While they were in prison, they didn’t complain. They didn’t ask questions to God. Instead, they were praying and singing hymns to God. Let’s see what God had done in prison.

Acts 16:26, “Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.” Sometimes when we go through difficulties and challenges, we may think, “Why am I going through this” despite our obedience to God. Some difficulties happen in life because of the divine purpose of God. We can see two things that happened in the life of Paul and Silas from the above account. - Worship God to get closer to Him - Experience deliverance and freedom God wants to do the same with you. But you must know the importance of worship in your life. You will see breakthroughs, healing, restoration, signs, wonders and miracles in your life. From my personal life, I can tell with surety that there will be so many challenges in the life of a true man or woman of God, but there will always be a divine purpose behind these challenges. I experienced many times in eleven years of my spiritual journey how worshipping God can change things and situations in your life and the lives of people around you. What can True Worship of God do in your Life? Worship can break strongholds in your life. Worship can break curses in your life. Worship can restore your relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. And the Question Is: Are you Worshipping God in Spirit and Truth? EGM TIMES | ELOHIMGOSPELMINISTRIES.COM

Are you a

true worshipper?

- Christian Mendones

As children of God, worship is our way of reverence, honoring Him, or sometimes our way of expressing how we feel. We often think that worship is only through singing with that lovely voice and great music. We sing, dance, pray or even give tithes as our acts of worshipping God. We often think that we are already worshipping Him with these acts, which is true. Honestly, singing, dancing, prayer and even giving tithes are acts of worshipping God, and there’s nothing wrong with these acts of worship. However, if we see how true and proper worship is from God’s point of view, we will know it is more than what we usually do or consider. And the question is how we can worship Him based and according to His standards? What does the Bible say when it comes to True and Proper worship?

“Worshipping God doesn’t always come with lyrics because it takes your whole being as a new and transformed Christian.”

23

Romans 12:1 (NIV), “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” What does true and proper worship mean? In Romans 12:1, we are reminded of how we should worship Him, which is to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. Worshipping God doesn’t always come with lyrics because it takes your whole being as a new and transformed Christian. As the Bible says, we are a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come. The Lord wants us to live the new life He has given to us, from being sons and daughters of this world to becoming sons and daughters of God because of our faith in Jesus Christ. But what does Living sacrifice means? Do we need to be crucified? Yes, but not literally be crucified every day, but instead, we need to crucify our earthly desire, for we have been crucified with God.

EGM TIMES | ELOHIMGOSPELMINISTRIES.COM

We, as believers, are told not to conform to the pattern of this world. Instead, we need to renew our minds based on what the Bible says. We need to set aside those worldly desires, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life to live a holy and pleasing life to God. It requires us to repent from our sins and continue to walk in holiness. We need to remember that our old nature has been crucified with Christ and whenever we are tempted to go back to our old nature, we have to remind ourselves that we are no longer living for ourselves but for Him who died for us and raised us from death. We need to be reminded that true worshippers will worship the Lord in Spirit and Truth. We need God’s Spirit day by day for us to be able to follow God. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot live a Holy life in this world, and without His truth that can be found in the Bible, we will never be set free from all the lies of this world. Worship is very important and vital to us as children of God, not just because the church, our parents, our grandparents told us to do so. Instead, we have to remember that worship is our way of acknowledging our new nature and it is our way of telling and confessing who we are in front of non-believers. Not everyone has the wisdom to interpret the word of God or the ability to preach the Gospel in front of many people, but everyone can be a good testimony. We can lead people to Christ through our testimony, the way we live our lives should reflect God’s character. It is not how long you have been a Christian or how many verses you know; what is important is how you live your life and how you use it for the glory of God. Always remember to live a Holy life and pleasing to God and offer your life as a living sacrifice for God’s glory, and be in awe of what Jesus did for us on the cross. We are now a new creation. The old has gone and new has come. We now belong to the family of God. We are His children.

Life In Between Our Unconscious

Spillage - Daya Raja

In the last edition, we acknowledged that worship in the most honest and unorthodox ways is the only right response to the beauty of Jesus. The scripture narrates Mary’s worship as follows, 'Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.' (John 12: 3) Though the house was filled with wealthier people who had more political and social status than her, the fragrance that filled the house was from Mary’s honest act of worship. When done as a response to the true majesty and love of God, worship spills out of our lives. It becomes uncontainable. Worship transforms us and our environments. It eventually becomes a ripple effect. Mary’s worship affected people to the extent where they brought comments to Jesus, though it wasn’t planned to be that way. To this day, we talk about her and the way she spilled her heart in adoration at the feet of Jesus.

“THE COMPASSION IN OUR EYES, THE GRACE IN OUR WORDS, THE SERVANTHOOD WE ADORN AND THE LOVE IN OUR ACTIONS THEN BECOMES OUR UNCONSCIOUS SPILLAGE, THE TRAILS WE LEAVE AND THE SWEET AROMA WE SPREAD IN OUR KITCHENS, OUR BUSINESS MEETINGS, AND ON OUR BAD DAYS WHICH EVENTUALLY AND ULTIMATELY BECKONS OTHERS TO CHRIST.”

28

EGM TIMES | ELOHIMGOSPELMINISTRIES.COM

What does our spillage look like? What trails do we leave unconsciously in the paths we have walked on? What overflows out of us accidentally? Answers to these questions reveal a lot about what we worship at the core of our being. Romans 12:1 asks us to ‘present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship,' and Colossians 3:23 says ‘whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people.’ Everything we do and everything we are- our private selves, public selves and professional selves ought to be an act of worship as per these verses. There are no bifurcations between church and Friday evenings. It all is one continuous offering unto Jesus. We are His temples, His altars that produce fragrance without a pause. When we are intentional about being worship unto him, ‘God uses us to make the knowledge about Christ spread everywhere like a sweet fragrance.’ (2 Corinthians 2: 14 ) The compassion in our eyes, the grace in our words, the servanthood we adorn and the love in our actions then become our unconscious spillage, the trails we leave and the sweet aroma we spread in our kitchens, our business meetings, and on our bad days which eventually and ultimately beckon others to Christ. God bless.

Final Word Dear friend, Thank you for making it to the end of this edition. We believe that you got new insights about Worship through this edition. Worship is more than a song, music and lifting of our hands. It’s a life of submission to God, obedience and sacrifices. Our whole life must be an act of worship. If you are reading this and have not experienced the love and power of God, we encourage you to embrace His love – offered as salvation through Jesus Christ. In His unending affection for us, God has a lot in store for your life and longs to have you as part of His family. We also encourage you to rededicate your life to God if you were born again but drifted away from the call. Make the following prayer and accept Jesus as your savior: “Lord Jesus, I come before you today. I acknowledge that I am a sinner, and my sins have separated me from you. Today, I believe that you are the son of God and that you had me in mind when you got crucified and died. I believe that you are resurrected and seated at the Father’s right hand. I accept you today as my Lord and savior. Thank you for paying the price for my eternal redemption. I am now the righteousness of God in Christ. I now ask you to fill me with your spirit. Amen.” Congratulations on surrendering or rededicating your life to God. You are now a new creation in Christ. We encourage you to join a family of believers (church) in your area, and we pray that you get established in your faith through studying the word by the grace of God. We at the EGM Times team love you and would like to hear from you. Send your feedback, comments, and constructive criticism to egmtimes@elohimgospelministries.com. See you in the next edition.
